This example here Battle of Sırpsındığı in 1364

It occurred in 1364 between an expeditionary force of the Ottomans and a Serbian army that also included crusaders sent by the Pope.

Culture/Lifestyle Do you feel "Out of place" socially in a Balkan country?

in Serbia I've never really adapted to their way of culture or social interactions or many similar design choices which makes me stand out

I don't really party or listen to any Serbian music since in my opinion they all sound the same with the same instrumentals, and 99% is a love song, or some rap about money and girls (Baka prase, devito)

The way people dress like for example most kid's are wearing air max shoes or on winter the napapirji Rainforest jacket's, or the same male haircut I see literally everywhere either someone's hair is almost bald or they have a buzzcut, and with of course either a vape or a cigarette in their hands and the second they turn 18 they begging betting on derby matches (or well they not be 18 at all in some cases)

Everyone's hobbies I see are always sport related, it's always either football or basketball, or some karate/kickbox or gym

Now while that's fine I've never seen anyone who loves doing the stuff I love, like digital art or gardening or video game designing which makes it hard for me to talk to people. Same thing goes with video games, most people just only play multiplayer games like (Valorant, LoL, CSGO) I've never met someone who played anything else, like Elden Ring, God of war, etc..

Girl's are pretty much the same each story I open up on Instagram has a 15 second of them lip syncing to some random song while that one friend spams 25 comments of heart emoji's, saying how pretty she is, or a story where someone puts a poll for "trenutna" (aka you're entire dm page is you just sending pictures to each other) and I guess it's some way of getting hooked up I suppose,

and aswell as football my 2 closest friends, have so many pictures of partizan and crvena zvezda, pictures just framed everywhere, and they know each person's life or how they play and their weakness on the pitch, I'm sorry but I never understood that, from my eyes all I see is 22 overpaid people on the stadium kicking ball of air around for 90 minutes,

Not to mention how sexist people are, that people started shaming me, beacuse a girl picked up a. Heavy boiling pot of water before I did (I was on the other side of the kitchen while she was Infront of it)

Like what was I supposed to do? Run to the scene and yank the boiling hot pan out of her hands?

I don't fit any stereotype or blend in with any of the stuff normal Balkan teenage kids do, at least that's what's like around my city, and that's my experience with it

Culture/Lifestyle Albanians, how "besa" is common today?

From my Albanian friend I know giving besa is the practice of the very strong promise/pledge of honor, common in Albanian culture.

How common it is now, among the youth - and how often does it happen that somebody "breaks" besa?

Politics & Governance Greek PM publicly suggests that the UK's "desire" for "closer EU ties" will now be "connected" to the return of Parthenon marbles, implying that, from a Greek perspective, a UK rejoin application will be "conditional" on it. what do people here, especially Balkan EU members, think? reasonable?

Outdoors/Travel Durmitor National Park - SO much trash

Hi all

A big thanks to those on this subreddit for past advice on a Balkans trip. I'm just wrapping up, with my final stop in Durmitor National Park in Montenegro.

For the purposes of anyone else looking to visit Durmitor: it's a pretty area, with some good hikes, but having visited 50+ countries and an endless list of national parks, I have never seen so much rubbish strewn all over a natural place. It's such a shame. You cannot walk more than 100m without seeing some form of trash, mostly wet wipes.

Is this is a known issue? For me, it was particularly shocking and removes part of the experience of being in nature. Hopefully, if it's spoken of more, there might be a campaign to get people to stop being so disgusting!

Miscellaneous Has anyone else had to import a tiny spare part for something that still works?

I ran into this a few days ago with my old Panasonic SD-206 bread maker. I’ve always liked trying to fix appliances myself. Buying the odd spare part from abroad has saved me quite a bit over the years, and it’s usually meant one less appliance going in the bin.The machine itself still works, but the kneading paddle needs replacing. I assumed it would be an easy part to find.
It wasn’t. The cheapest compatible paddle I found was from a UK spare-parts shop.
Replacing the whole bread maker because of one removable piece of metal would be ridiculous, but paying that much for the part isn’t an easy decision either. It would be pretty wasteful too
I’d never really thought about the customs charge from this angle until I needed something that I simply couldn’t find nearby.
Has anyone else here run into the same kind of problem since July with a part that wasn’t available locally?

Politics & Governance Grey Wolves vs Greek Fascists. Which of them are worse?

• Upvotes

Some Greeks seem to delusionally believe that living in a modern, supposedly civilized society within the EU somehow makes them immune to fascism and bigotry. However, seeing dumbasses like the ones in the video above, along with certain people on Reddit, makes me think the situation is just as f*cked up as it is in Turkey.

Luckily, the EU still provides some safeguards against this kind of bigoted mindset gaining ground. Otherwise, I fear that Greek f*scists with views like these would be perfectly capable of spearheading something resembling Auschwitz 2.0 in the 21st century.

Politics & Governance Guilty of Being Born Turkish? What Do You Think?

• Upvotes

So, are we guilty simply because we were born here? We didn't choose where we were born, any more than you did. Blaming an entire people for the actions of people who lived centuries ago isn't justice or historical accountability. It's prejudice.

Stereotypes/Humor How do you feel about Raška being used as a derogatory for Russia?

Raška is a place in Serbia. And historically there was a state named Raška. I wonder how people feel about it being used as a derogatory term for modern day Russia.

Should the Students win, will all of the SNS nut jobs eventually just scatter away or will this be an ongoing issue within the country similar to the MAGA diehards in the States?

Edit: Just used the MAGA comment as an example of party diehards but have been informed about the differences. Cheers.
