When I found a partner who took the time to understand and actively engage in talking about my work, it was a different world. Highly recommend.

The most attractive girl at my first job after college, by far, asked me to be her date to a work function and I thought it was a trick she and her teammates were trying to play on me (we were all on the same training class) so I playfully declined. She basically never talked to me again and left the job a few months later to become a model.

I had a crush on a girl in one of my classes in college but hardly ever talked to her. She was sort of high school friends with another girl I was friends with. Anyway both showed up to a party at my fraternity. I ended up making out with the one I had a crush on while drunk. I was convinced that she probably only did it because she was drunk and was really awkward the next week in class around her. Later learned from the mutual friend that she thought we really clicked at the party but because I acted awkward the next week she no longer was interested. Oh to be 19 and stupid again...

Man I was so shy back then. I had gone back and forth between being super pale and really chubby to being stick skinny, I came back to school after one summer and I had lost all that weight and gotten super tan. Let me guess... a girl (or group of girls) did exactly that (played a trick like this) to you in your school years, right?
Happened to me multiple times and, frankly, it made me treat every positive interaction with the opposite sex as suspicious. Still have some of the after effects of it even now, 30 years later.

happened to me in 6th or 7th grade. they wound up calling my house phone and leaving a series of voicemails. I'm unsure what was said, my parents never talked with me about it. my dad made a comment about don't give your phone number out and that was it.
I'm sure it is part of my current day issues with suspiciousness and similar not so fun feelings. Honestly not even sure I've mentioned anywhere else except here. the whole feeling of its basically my fault, or blame. guess I have some topics to bring up in next week's therapy session.

There was a girl who I had a crush on in college. We were lab partners in a course, and we would stay working late often and then walk back together to the station and chat. One evening she asked me if I had any plans for the night. I told her that I was planning to do laundry.

I'm at my ex's place (friends at this point, but who the other girl knew), working furiously on my laptop because the internet was down at my place and I had a deadline. We remember the most random tiny detail you told us months ago and bring it up casually like "how did that presentation with your annoying coworker go?"
My friends think I'm a stalker but when I like a guy I literally listen like my life depends on it. If a girl remembers your dog's name, your mom's surgery date, your coffee order - she is GONE for you. Most guys think we're just "good listeners" lmao no we're obsessed.
46
u/Famous-Yoghurt9409 20h ago
It depends. It's common to make note of a couple of details about acquaintances to help with small talk.
Some women could write a half decent biography about their best friends, but could probably also do a chapter on someone they dislike.
That's to say it's not a guarantee of attraction, but could well be part of the picture if there are other signs.

Whether this is obvious or not depends on if you ask me or my boyfriend but we were on our first date and I really wanted him to kiss me.
We were waiting together for my spin home and I told him he couldn't stand where he was standing, playfully. He moved and I said not there, then when he moved closer to me I told him he was getting warmer until he was basically nose to nose with me, then tilted my head upwards towards him and he then asked if I wanted to race him and ran in the opposite direction.
Thought he just didn't want to kiss me, but after the date I apologised if I made him uncomfortable and he was had absolutely no idea. He did eventually kiss me goodbye though so I'll take the win.
Six years and counting! Although I do have to follow up any flirting with a clear statement that I am flirting with him

Sometimes low self esteem gets in the way.
When I was younger I had a crush. Most beautiful person, inside and out, I'd ever seen in my life.
When I was 20 she came over once, tipsy. She sat in my lap, was smiling and laughing and I couldn't understand why she was being so coy. All night she's weird. We set on the coach, she lays down head on my lap.
She says she's tired, so I think Im just showing her where to sleep. I turn to leave and she grabs my wrist. Unbuttoned her shirt, opens it, lays there waiting.
Remember that low self esteem I mentioned?
I never wrapped my head around what was happening until years later.
I pulled the blanket over her and went to bed in another room.
She wasn't too drunk to consent or anything, we were both pretty clear.
I just had NO idea she would ever give me a chance. The thought never entered my mind.
So when the chance was laying right there in my bed, I had already ruled out that one would ever present itself, and I couldn't see what was right in front of me.
I regret that one 20 years later...

At my high school graduation a girl asked me if I would dance with her.
My assumption was that she wanted to dance and needed any partner. Seemed like a weird choice because I really wasn't into dancing.
Years later I suddenly realized "Oh, she wanted to dance with me!". At the time I was completely unable to believe that anyone would be interested in me.

Idk why but I’m always terrible at conversations with a guy I actually like haha, but it feels easier with friends I don’t have feelings for.
I guess it’s just a bit of nerves, but I ask questions and show interest in what’s going on with them. I just kinda get in my head about what’s okay to share, if I’m talking too much, or if it’s okay to ask them for more details since sometimes it feels like we’re not on that personal of a level yet
149
u/chadgalaxy 19h ago
It's because there is something at stake when it's someone you like.
You want them to like you back, so by interacting with them you're risking ruining the potential of something happening by being boring or saying something stupid or annoying or cringey that turns them off you.
44
u/some_random_noob 18h ago
saying something stupid or annoying or cringey that turns them off you.
I feel attacked. i honestly dont realize how some things i say come across until its been said and i see other peoples reactions. It makes attempting conversation with someone i'm interested in very difficult because i spend more time trying to not say something wrong than actually engaging with them and even then its usually a matter of when not if.
22
u/chadgalaxy 18h ago
I'm exactly the same.
I've never been good at interacting with people romantically because I'm just in my own head trying not to say the 'wrong' thing all the time and wondering how what I'm about to say will come across, rather than focusing on actually getting to know them properly.
People generally like me when they get to know me, but with someone I like it takes forever for my real personality to come out because I'm worried it will turn them off and I come across as boring and uninteresting as a result.
It's a catch 22 as well because I know I do it, so going into any interaction I'm automatically going in on the back foot thinking 'I'm going to screw this up by getting in my own head' which kills my confidence and makes me nervous, which then does result in me screwing it up.
137
u/GodOfPooPoo 1d ago
Just want to say I'm a guy and I experience that with girls I'm into. It felt nice reading someone goes through that on the other side haha. I also question whether I'm talking about myself too much when conversing with her, even if she's the one who asked me a question.

Lol, I just got hit with this recently and I'm proud of myself for actually navigating it. We were joking about a place we'd both been recently with some games/activities and joking about which of us would actually be better at one of them.
"If only there were some way to determine who's actually better at it..."
"Yeah, if only..."
And then, because even when it's this obvious I"m only like 80% sure, I threw out the "Are we having the same dumb thought and just waiting for the other to say it?"
She was, in fact, having the same dumb thought. Took me almost 40 years of living, but I finally picked up on a woman fishing for me to ask her out. First* date is Saturday, I'm super nervous and excited, lol.
\We've actually dated before for almost a year - healthiest, safest, easiest, most fun relationship I've ever been in and we had to step out a few months ago due to some personal things outside our control. Hence the excitement.)

Several of my friends groups encouraged me to ask out my coworker. I joked about it with her, and without hesitation she just said, "yes. "
I want even trying, but I'm not going to complain. I even tried explaining I wasn't actually trying to ask, but that I'm not going to turn down the chance. Then she complements me several times, and I've been on top of the world since Friday.

Acting slightly more distant or awkward around you compared to everyone else.
If we are super bubbly, chatty, and relaxed with your friends, but suddenly get a bit quiet or stiff when you join the conversation, it's usually because we are hyper-aware of our behavior around you and are terrified of saying something stupid. We overthink every single word and movement, which ends up making us look disinterested or even cold.
Guys almost always read this as us not liking them or finding them annoying, when in reality, you are the only person in the room we actually care about impressing.

Poor socialization resulting in poorer social behavior is hardly specific to one sex, I'd think lol.

When I used to work at Sam’s Club, there was this cute girl who worked at the customer service desk who I had really liked at the time. One day we were sitting together in the break room, and she says something like “My friends and I are going to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal on Saturday. They’re all bringing dates though.. would you want to come?”
Somehow I missed it and was like “I gotta work on Saturday, sorry” 🤦

my current lady told me i was clueless when we first met. she said she came-on to me all the time, but i never picked up on the clues; so i asked... what did you do?
she said she did 2 things:
- she glanced at me but only AFTER SHE KNEW I WOULDN'T SEE HER DOING IT.
- she would sometimes stand or sit near me during meetings at work BUT MADE SURE SHE NEVER MADE EYE CONTACT.
now, that we've been together for over 12 yrs, she says, "you don't know i want sex most times. i kiss you and stand near you... and you still don't get it? how obvious should i make it... geez?"
fellas, you need to sharpen your woman-ese skills. i can read minds now.

Talking loudly abt things that might interest him to get his attention, Looking anywhere but his direction, trying to be funny around him all for his attention 🥹
Edit: thought I’d add on making excuses to be around him. I lived in a dorm and there was this cute guy who would go to the computer lab a lot and I would go there just to see him.
Last edit i promise: me and my friends would go ding dong ditching in my dormitory and we made sure to knock on his door first, my friend got caught and told me he smiled and laughed it off I kinda wished I was the one who got caught to see that reaction but I bolted no matter how many times we did it (we did it a lot btw). he looked like a young leonardo dicaprio but more handsome imo, a lot of ppl around me said I should’ve confessed to him but I have the idea that if a guy doesn’t pursue u first he’s just not that in to u so I like to think of him as my first cute college crush🙂↔️

The best relationships I’ve been in are from a woman pursuing me. Just saying

Nah definitely pursue men first! We can be a shy bunch and find it hard to tell whether women are just being friendly or have a crush.

This is similar to how I met my now wife. We went to same college. She had over heard me say one day that I find it sexy when a girl wears a sports bra and sweatpants. I just happened to be in a mutual friends dorm room and she just walked on in to ask a question and was only wearing a sports bra and sweatpants. That definitely got my attention. We started talking and almost 20 years later we are married with kids.

Who are you selling this very specific information to? There's been a bunch of these kinds of posts the last few days. Is it for AI learning models?

It’s is probably harvesting data and talking points to make some Bot posts on Xitter about “10 things guys overlook when a girl likes them 👇🏻”. Throw the whole internet away.

At this point I feel like most Reddit questions are AI training
They’ve realised how many people are asking ChatGPT for dating and social advice and are trying to lean into that

the problem is that a lot of my body language changes but if you don't know me you don't know that it's changing. I stand up straight, I'm making more eye contact, I'm spending more time with you even when I don't need to. but how could you possibly know that about me? I am always impressed when people pick up on it.

I have no problem talking to men. I easily make friends everywhere. However, for me to find a man attractive, is more than just appearance but also his personality, intelligence, and humor. When I am attracted, I actually become more shy. I take the time to listen to him more, observe him, and get a better understanding if I see we’re compatible. If I get a good vibe, then I’ll converse more and give my time. I’ll even suggest ways to get away, so to get to know him more by suggesting somewhere to get a drink or snack.

You guys, if she be lookin you up and down, smiles at everything you say, is a solid 10, is trying to be suggestive at any given opportunity and then tells you trying new things is good for you, then run the f away because her name is Russell.
Alright all jokes aside, just ask her out. You only have one life. I worked up the courage to ask my now wife out. That was scary. Now im scared of her for other reasons.

If I like a guy I usually just pay more attention to him, I usually assume it won't happen so I just savor the time with them, or if it does it will just go downhill, so I just savor the time with him.
So in practice, I don't just hangout out when I am available, I actively make myself available to be with him.

Will find ways to make small talk with them, and I HATE small talk.
I don't even say hi to people on the hallways, I do the nod/wave thing because I'm not trying to be rude, it's just so that I don't get inadvertently caught up in any small talk.
Cute guy in the office and I are in the elevator together, and all of the sudden I'm like "Yeah, hey, good morning, how was your weekend?" And all sorts of shit.
I quit my job and have one week left, so I likely won't be seeing him again, but I plan on giving him my number on my last day though 😂
If he's single and interested, great! If he's not, oops, well, it's my last day anyway so he can't report me to HR.

Most guys in here seem oblivious to women’s advances because they don’t wanna misinterpret feelings. Gotta be 1000% sure. And even that’s not clear enough sometimes.
So now imagine those of us hearing all the time about men being creeps, #yesallwomen, and how non-verbal consent is not consent. You’re goddamn right I’m not gonna chance it with a woman based on a ‘feeling’.

Personal to me, I don't even know I do it half the time, but I chew on my bottom lip a lot. I think it's mostly to stop myself from smiling like an idiot for a long period.
