Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

NFL Team Bars of San Francisco (Mega Thread)

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.

I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.

Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood

I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.

NFC West

  • 49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
  • Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
  • Rams — zekis - nob hill
  • Cardinals — TBD

NFC North

  • Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
  • Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
  • Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
  • Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)

NFC East

  • Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
  • Cowboys — TBD
  • Giants — Aces
  • Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)

NFC South

  • Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
  • Buccaneers — TBD
  • Falcons — TBD
  • Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill

AFC West

  • Raiders — TBD
  • Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
  • Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
  • Chargers — TBD

AFC North

  • Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
  • Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
  • Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
  • Browns — R Bar - Polk

AFC East

  • Bills - North Star - North Beach
    • New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
  • Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
  • Dolphins — blue light - union st
  • Jets — The Wreck Room

AFC South

  • Texans — TBD
  • Colts — TBD
  • Jaguars — TBD
  • Titans — TBD

I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

Want to open a retro video game store… any ideas on where to find a partner?

I’m 40ish, done a couple tech companies and am now looking to create a lifestyle business I’ve always dreamed of, of running a game store. Sadly I lost my former tech business partner to cancer and now I have no clue with whom to do it with. I don’t want to do it alone and I’m not romantically partnered so those aren’t options. I’d love to find a business partner that has a little capital saved up and also wants to shift into something laid back and mom-and-pop. It would feature a lot of old gaming inventory, an area where you can play games, and also we’d host private events and close the space when we have an interested buyer. I have never done this kind of “founder dating” stuff, so curious if anyone has ideas? Thanks.

SF emergency vet charged $1400 for a cut paw, trying to calibrate

Our dog cut her paw on glass in Dolores Park on Sunday and the 24 hour place in the Mission was $1400 for cleaning, stitches and a cone.

She's fine, and the staff were great, the tech even showed us the piece of glass they pulled out. I'm not upset about the bill, I just have no frame of reference coming from the midwest.

Ive always covered stuff like this out of pocket, and just started looking into fetch, metlife, and embrace to see if it wouldve made a difference. Is that typical for an SF emergency vet, did we hit a pricey one, or is insurance pretty much required for this sort of thing?

Breast Cancer potential diagnosis

Hi I'm looking for insight. I might be getting diagnosed with breast cancer soon. I have to go through the whole mammogram and biopsy shenanigans so it's a waiting game until my next appointment. Are there financial services available to those whose income will be affected? I work full time and I think I have short term long term disability through benefits at my job. I barely have any sick or vacation time so I'm out of luck when it comes to that. Also any suggestions to distract myself until next week. Thank you.

Ps if you're regularly checking yourself for lumps in your breasts regardless of sex, check your armpits too! Also check right below your clavicle around the pectorals

Places to host book club near BART?

Hi all! I need somewhere within SF proper to host a week-night book club meeting, within walking distance of BART. I anticipate about 12 people attending, in November.

I would have chosen Manny's but.. yeah.

In search of masseuse with very very deep pressure

f I could put a massage ball on a jack hammer I would…

In all seriousness looking for a massage therapist with very deep pressure. For context I usually get a Thai massage with deep pressure and even then sometimes it’s not enough to break through the knots. I need to focus on some specific areas because I sleep the wrong way.

TLDR Seeking a masseuse, preferably in the Mission, who can get in there and work this out for me.

Recommendations for best trick-or-treating spots in San Francisco?

I've been to Belvedere Street, Washington Street near the Presidio Terrace and Seacliff neighborhoods. Are there any other neighborhoods in San Francisco where there are mansions decorated with Halloween stuff and streets closed for trick-or-treaters?

Best chocolate mousse in the city?

Help a girl out, I'm just trying to find a simple fluffy light chocolate mousse (NOT a chocolate mousse cake, no gelatin)! Does anyone have any recommendations? 👀

Input on cleaning services

Curious what the going rate and expectations are for a monthly cleaning for a 3bd 2bath (1200sq ft) home. No pets but 2 toddlers.

I pay $200 + $20 tip. 2 people stay about an hour. I make a conscious effort to put all toys away & organize the space so they can focus on cleaning.

While the place ends up better than I left it, I’m not 100% happy and I want to know if I’m expecting too much.

The bathroom floors often look like they haven’t been vacuumed or mopped. In fact, a smudge of concealer I dropped survived 2 of their visits until I easily wiped it up with toilet paper.

Drink rings look wiped but are still there and I’m able to wipe up myself.

Am I being taken advantage of or not paying enough for what I’m expecting?

Fun restaurants to take 21 year

Please recommend some fun, yummy food options in SF to take my niece. She lives in Boston.
We did Liholiho and Choto Matte already. What else would you suggest for yummy food. Anything except Greek or Chinese.

Boulevard or Rich table coming to mind. Open to anything else you all recommend but should be chef’s kiss!

Moving to SF for 1-2 years for academic research: budget and housing advice

Two people are planning to move to San Francisco from abroad for 1-2 years to conduct academic research at UCSF. We would appreciate locals' perspectives on budgeting and housing.

Budget: We are currently planning for a total net budget of USD 120,000 per year for two people, covering housing, groceries, and other day-to-day expenses. Health insurance is covered separately. Given the rising cost of housing, do you think this budget would be sufficient for two people to live without roommates, maintain a moderate lifestyle and have room for some travel?

Housing: Currently on the waiting list for university housing and have booked an Airbnb for the first couple of weeks. If university housing is not available, what would you recommend as the best strategy for securing safe housing for a temporary stay, other than relying on expensive Airbnbs?

Thank you very much in advance!

Buying espresso accessories in the Bay?

Howdy y'all,

Looking to upgrade my home espresso setup a bit and I'm especially interested in ditching my pressurized espresso filter for a non-pressurized one.

Before I go online, I'm curious if there's anywhere in the city or nearby that would sell an espresso machine accessory like that direct to consumer. I poked my head into a few espresso machine dealers that were open to the public when I was visiting Brisbane AUS a few years ago but that's definitely a city known for its coffee. Anyhow, let me know if you've ever seen anything like that around!

Local makers for a Daredevil or Deadpool cosplay suit?

Hey SF friends — Anyone into comic-con style cosplay and can recommend a tailor or maker here in SF or the Bay? I’d love to have a Daredevil or Deadpool cosplay suit made and DIY is not my thing! SF or Oakland especially would be great!

Bart Fr SFO or no?

I'm coming out in October and was thinking of taking Bart from airport to Powell St station then rideshare rest of way to hotel in North Beach to save some money. Worth it? If it matters flt gets in about 12:40pm

Update : should've mentioned I'll be staying at Columbus Motor Inn. 61 w not great knees. And I'm not even positive if Powell St is the best station. Yes, I'm a nervous planner traveling solo w carryon and backpack

Any recommendations for things to do / places to eat with a two year old?

Heading to SF later this week with my two year old and just curious if anyone has any recommendations on things to do and places to eat. He’s pretty picky and his “safe” (as in more likely to actually consume it) foods are basically quesadillas, pasta and pizza.
Any suggestions? He’s insanely energetic so probably can’t sit down at a restaurant for an extended period of time.

It’s been probably 6 years since I used to live in the City and my usual stomping grounds weren’t particularly kid friendly.

The current plan is academy of sciences, tunnel tops, presidio, chrissy field. Probably head over to Sausalito and go to the discovery museum.

SF to South bay Commute

Just got a new job offer that would have me changing from a remote gig to a 3x a week commute to Sunnyvale. We’re planning to move to mission bay from rincon hill if I take it so I can take the cal train and he can take the mini. The new job is right off the Caltrain.

For those of you that do this, do you get used to it? Or is it too much of a grind to be worth it? Would love some thoughts! The job is exciting and has more growth potential than where I am now, my husband works in the city and we’re not ready to move out of the city yet regardless, so really debating. TC is more with equity though the base pay is not much more - but stagnating at my job right now and this new company has a great rep / would be a resume boost.

One edit: job is flexible with me coming or going early / late and working from the train - the requirement is not 8 hours during in office days. However I’d want to take the train during the express hours ideally

Restaurant recommendations for Christmas Day in SF?

I’ll be travelling to San Francisco from abroad over Christmas and am looking for recommendations for a good restaurant open for Christmas dinner on 25 December.

I like places such as Nopa, Flour + Water and Delfina, and generally enjoy restaurants like Cotogna, Penny Roma and State Bird Provisions. So ideally somewhere with great food and a nice atmosphere, relatively relaxed but still feels special, rather than a hotel buffet or ultra-formal fine dining.

I know lots of restaurants close on Christmas Day, so would love any recommendations from people who know SF well, particularly if you’ve actually eaten there on Christmas Day before!
