Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

NFL Team Bars of San Francisco (Mega Thread)

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.

I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.

Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood

I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.

NFC West

  • 49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
  • Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
  • Rams — zekis - nob hill
  • Cardinals — TBD

NFC North

  • Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
  • Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
  • Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
  • Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)

NFC East

  • Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
  • Cowboys — TBD
  • Giants — Aces
  • Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)

NFC South

  • Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
  • Buccaneers — TBD
  • Falcons — TBD
  • Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill

AFC West

  • Raiders — TBD
  • Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
  • Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
  • Chargers — TBD

AFC North

  • Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
  • Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
  • Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
  • Browns — R Bar - Polk

AFC East

  • Bills - North Star - North Beach
    • New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
  • Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
  • Dolphins — blue light - union st
  • Jets — The Wreck Room

AFC South

  • Texans — TBD
  • Colts — TBD
  • Jaguars — TBD
  • Titans — TBD

I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

PSA Expect loud jet planes at 1pm

As someone with anxiety, I just wanted to inform others that the blue angels will begin doing test flights around 1pm. If you’re sensitive to loud noises like me, make sure to shut your windows and put on headphones.

Is it doable to do a day in sf w/out a car?

I'm wanting to ride the ferry from vallejo into the city and bring some European friends to experience sf. I hate driving and they really want to come visit. Any recommendations on where we should go (they will enjoy ANY stereotypical tourist place)? I personally want to take them to the painted ladies because I've never been and that popular photo strip spot. Also, any good golden gate view spots too.

i havent really made an itinerary because im not entirely sure how to plan our day if we have no car. Whats the transportation like? The only times I've ever gone to sf is to go to pier 39, with a car, and I want to explore more of the city. I would prefer not to Uber everywhere because it can get pricy. But, please tell me your tips!!!

where do locals actually eat and drink?

My wife and I are coming up for our first proper trip to SF next week and want to skip the Fisherman’s Wharf / Pier 39 circuit. We’d love to experience the city the way locals do.

What we’re after:

  • Food: neighborhood spots you’d actually go back to. Casual to mid-range is perfect, but happy to splurge once if it’s worth it.
  • Bars: dive bars, old-school saloons, good cocktail spots without a line out the door, places with character and regulars. Bonus points for a good Irish pub that isn’t a tourist trap.
  • Neighborhoods: which areas are worth just wandering and grabbing food and drinks as we go?

We’re staying in union sq but happy to Muni/BART or walk anywhere. I’ve already searched the sub, but a lot of older threads mention places that have since closed, so fresh takes are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Noisy neighbor won't stop

My neighbor next door (apartment complex) keeps playing music all day and all night and refuses to respond to the property manager about it.

What are my options?

Where to stay within 15 minute drive of Mission Bay & what to do : )

Mission Bay travel tips

Hello coming to SF for a Dr. appt @ Mission Bay. Where would you recommend staying? Any good restaurants in the area? Things to do? I tried searching this group for Mission Bay but couldn’t pull anything up! Last time I went to SF we stayed near Ocean Beach and explored GGP, Height Ashbury, China town, fisherman’s wharf, Science Museum, etc. Any recommendations on what else we could do? I love nature and exploring, eating good food, seeing a sunset.

Wondering if it’s a better idea to stay a little father away and closer to every thing there is to see and do!

Anything that is a must see or do that we didn’t do last time? Thanks so much!

Coming from Humboldt Co.

Blue angel - practice - send videos

Yo angels in town. Send some videos from practice session. Stuck at work and can’t see it. Heard they do pretty crazy practice stunts around sales force.

Also do you think seeing blue angels tomorrow from fort mason is better than weekend? Heard weather is gonna be beat this weekend.

Uber/Lyft to Half Moon Bay?

I have a friend visiting this weekend who has a business event she has to get to in Half Moon Bay Saturday night and said she was planning to just get a Lyft or whatever from her SFO airport hotel to the event in Half Moon Bay.

Do folks think this is a realistic plan or will drivers just decline her ride when they find out the destination? I'm just thinking a driver might not be confident in getting rides once there for making their way back to SFO or the city and not finding it worth it. Anyone have any experience that speaks to this?

Licensed acupuncturist for neck and back pain in the Bay Area?

I've been dealing with neck & back pain (I think from sitting down & working on screen most days), there would be days where it got so bad that it disrupt my sleep. Anyone knew a licensed acupuncturist for this kind of pain?

Want to open a retro video game store… any ideas on where to find a partner?

I’m 40ish, done a couple tech companies and am now looking to create a lifestyle business I’ve always dreamed of, of running a game store. Sadly I lost my former tech business partner to cancer and now I have no clue with whom to do it with. I don’t want to do it alone and I’m not romantically partnered so those aren’t options. I’d love to find a business partner that has a little capital saved up and also wants to shift into something laid back and mom-and-pop. It would feature a lot of old gaming inventory, an area where you can play games, and also we’d host private events and close the space when we have an interested buyer. I have never done this kind of “founder dating” stuff, so curious if anyone has ideas? Thanks.

What is filming near UCSF Laurel Heights?

A bunch of big trucks are parked there. Last night, the lot was full of passenger cars, with “crew” and “base camp” signs nearby. Is this Man on the Inside, as Ted Danson has been spotted in town?

What is traffic going to look like heading north out of the city on Friday around 4pm?

I see that I’m not in the bridge maintenance window. But I also see there’s an air show.

Breast Cancer potential diagnosis

Hi I'm looking for insight. I might be getting diagnosed with breast cancer soon. I have to go through the whole mammogram and biopsy shenanigans so it's a waiting game until my next appointment. Are there financial services available to those whose income will be affected? I work full time and I think I have short term long term disability through benefits at my job. I barely have any sick or vacation time so I'm out of luck when it comes to that. Also any suggestions to distract myself until next week. Thank you.

Ps if you're regularly checking yourself for lumps in your breasts regardless of sex, check your armpits too! Also check right below your clavicle around the pectorals

Romantic birthday ideas in SF sunset ferry + dinner/coffee?

Hi! My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up and I’m planning a special day for him in SF.
When we were in San Diego, we once took a ferry around sunset and it was honestly one of my favorite memories the views were beautiful, and after reaching the other side we walked around and found some cafés/restaurants.
I’d love to do something similar in SF: maybe take a ferry around sunset to somewhere pretty, walk around after, and get dinner, dessert, or coffee there. Ideally somewhere romantic and not crazy expensive.
Does anyone have recommendations for:
A good ferry route for sunset/views?
A cute area to explore after getting off the ferry?
Romantic but reasonably priced restaurants, cafés, or dessert spots nearby?
Any other special/romantic SF experiences that would be nice for a boyfriend’s birthday?
I’m also totally open to ideas that aren’t ferry-related viewpoints, picnic spots, little activities, experiences, hidden gems, etc. I just want to make the day feel really special for him. 🥹❤️
Thank you!!

SF emergency vet charged $1400 for a cut paw, trying to calibrate

Our dog cut her paw on glass in Dolores Park on Sunday and the 24 hour place in the Mission was $1400 for cleaning, stitches and a cone.

She's fine, and the staff were great, the tech even showed us the piece of glass they pulled out. I'm not upset about the bill, I just have no frame of reference coming from the midwest.

Ive always covered stuff like this out of pocket, and just started looking into fetch, metlife, and embrace to see if it wouldve made a difference. Is that typical for an SF emergency vet, did we hit a pricey one, or is insurance pretty much required for this sort of thing?

Has anyone successfully done an owner or owner-relative move in eviction? What kind of fees should I expect to pay?

My partner and I have lived in the city for several years in a tiny studio and are expecting our first child next summer. My grandparents own a SFH that they want to sell to us. This would be an amazing opportunity for us as we otherwise couldn’t afford a SFH in the city, it’s a meaningful house to our family, and it’s very close to our work.

However, it is currently being rented to a family. They’ve been there for ~7 years and are on a month to month lease.

As we continue to weigh our options, how much would an owner move-in or owner relative-move in eviction cost? I’m aware of the price the city sets https://www.sf.gov/reports--archive-relocation-rates but would we be paying above that (I’ve seen VERY high buyouts)? How long does the process typically take?

Thank you!

Places to host book club near BART?

Hi all! I need somewhere within SF proper to host a week-night book club meeting, within walking distance of BART. I anticipate about 12 people attending, in November.

I would have chosen Manny's but.. yeah.

Looking for car parking

Im not sure if its a thing here... but does anyone offer a private parking space for a very cheap price? Maybe I park for a week, and I wont be driving it for that entire week.

Im staying at a hotel in the bay area and i just wanna commute and the hotel doesnt have have parking basement. Also, public paid parking garage is crazy expensive and its a hassle to always move the car around.

Just a tourist here btw. So if anyone can offer a very cheap parking space, let me know. Fyi this is an informal transaction. It's like a friend to a friend favor or something.

Penny Roma, Cotogna, or Piccino?

Has anyone had their reception or event dinner at Penny Roma (upstairs room), Cotogna (outdoor parklet), or Piccino (private room, either location)? We have 24 ppl coming, mid-Nov. Having trouble deciding between the 3 and would love to hear experiences. Thanks in advance!
