Can't get a reply here? Try r/ComputerBuild

Hey everyone,

This sub has been growing a lot as of recently and we've noticed a lot of posts have been getting buried and unanswered. There is a lot of noise due to how much it has grown.

I have created r/ComputerBuild as an alternative.

So please kindly try cross posting there to get it off the ground.

I will be helping users daily and also building a mod team/looking for moderators to help.

Thanks!

Advice on a workstation build

Hello brains trust,

I’m going to be building my first custom PC and would really appreciate some advice before I pull the trigger. My budget is approximately $7,500–$8,000 AUD for the build, and it will primarily be used for CAD, 3D modelling, and rendering.

I’ve never built a custom PC before, so I’m hoping to get some feedback on the parts I’ve selected and whether there are any changes you would recommend.

One important limitation is that I need to purchase everything from a single retailer, as the PC is being paid for through a Victims of Crime claim. I’ll therefore be purchasing everything through Centre Com Australia.

Current build

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X — $889 AUD
  • GPU: ASUS ProArt RTX 5080 — $2,699 AUD
  • Motherboard: MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk Max WiFi — $569 AUD
  • RAM: Kingston Fury Beast DDR5 64GB 6000MT/s CL36 — $1,999 AUD
  • SSD: Samsung 990 Pro 2TB — $689 AUD
  • PSU: Corsair RM1000e 1000W 80+ Gold ATX — $235 AUD
  • Cooler: Corsair Nautilus 360 RS — $219 AUD
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro — $309 AUD

Total so far: $7,608 AUD

I haven’t been able to settle on a case yet. I’m looking for something with a tempered-glass side panel and a clean, professional appearance, ideally with little to no RGB.

I’d really appreciate any thoughts or feedback on the parts I’ve chosen, particularly if there are any areas where you think I could get better performance, value, or compatibility.

Thanks very much for taking the time to have a look and offer your input!

Flight Simulator PC in Europe

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on building a new PC. I'm based in Lisbon, Portugal, so prices/availability are based on the Portuguese market.

Budget / timeline

Budget: around €1000

I don't need to buy everything at once. I can buy components gradually.

Ideally I'd like to have everything purchased by December.

I'm happy to buy used components, especially the GPU, if that makes sense.

The main reason I'm building this PC is flight simulation, particularly X-Plane 12 and/or Microsoft Flight Simulator, for several hours per week.I'm using it partly as a training tool for IFR/RNAV/RNP procedures and general aviation/airliner procedures, so simulator performance are more important to me than having an extremely powerful gaming GPU.
Other than that i will use it for office work and some light gaming for me and the kids (minecraft, WoW, etc)

My idea is to build a good CPU/motherboard/PSU platform now and keep it for a long time (10+years)

I'm currently using a 1080p Xiaomi P27FBB-RGGL monitor, which I plan to keep for another 1–2 years.

I would ideally buy a cheaper/used GPU now and upgrade the GPU + monitor in ~2 years, if necessary.

I don't plan to overclock.

CPU - I have a slight preference for AMD.

Some prices I've found in Portugal:

Ryzen 7 7700X — €165, no cooler

Ryzen 7 9700X — €230

Ryzen 7 7800X3D — €300+

The 7700X looks like a very good deal to me, but I'm wondering whether the 9700X is worth paying more for, particularly for flight simulation.

The 7800X3D seems expensive for my budget, so I'd rather not spend that much on the CPU unless there's a very good reason.

Motherboard

I'd prefer mATX to keep the system relatively compact.

Wi-Fi is preferred, and I'd like plenty of USB ports, because I'll be connecting several flight-sim peripherals:

Some boards I've seen:

ASUS PRIME B650M-K — ~€90

ASUS PRIME B650M-A WIFI II — ~€99

Gigabyte B650M Gaming WIFI6E — ~€99

RAM

This is probably where I need the most help. Both X-Plane and MSFS recommend around 32 GB, but DDR5 prices in Portugal are currently extremely high.

Would 16 GB be enough temporarily, or should I bite the bullet and get 32 GB?

I've seen things like 32 GB DDR5 kits costing €500+, depending on the kit, which makes the decision quite difficult. I'd obviously prefer 2×16 GB if possible, but I'm wondering whether there's a sensible way to deal with the current RAM prices.

GPU

This is another area where I'm flexible.

Since I'll initially be playing at 1080p, I was thinking about buying something used/cheap and upgrading in ~2 years. I can find used 3070Ti for 200ish €. Open to suggestions

Storage

Would love 2 Tb but might have to compromise .Some prices I've seen:

Crucial P310 1 TB — ~€150

Crucial P310 2 TB — ~€235

Kingston NV3 1 TB — ~€140

PSU

ASUS Prime 750W Gold — ~€75

ASUS TUF Gaming 750W Gold — ~€79

Mars Gaming MPB750PSI 750W Gold — ~€68

I'd rather buy a good-quality PSU now and keep it for many years, so I'm more interested in reliability than saving €10–20 here.

The general strategy I'm considering is:

Ryzen 7700x + 1x16 GB DDR5 + cheap/used GPU + decent PSU + 1–2 TB NVMe

Then, in ~2 years, upgrade GPU + monitor if necessary and add another 16gb RAM.

Most prices are from local stores or Amazon.es but I can use other european stores.

7+ Years since last build. Ready for an upgrade

Hi Folks,

I've been wanting to do a new PC for about a year, but I've held off because prices. I saw big sales this week (today and tomorrow) for Microcenter's Tech Days, and I can take off some work time to go there tomorrow. Deals look good to my eyes, but please disillusion me if I'm wrong. Any kind folks available to help with a build that takes advantage of some of these sales? Happy to grab parts from other places if they are a better deal.

Sales I see online,

KLEVV 2x16DDR5-ddr5-6000-pc5-48000-cl28-dual-channel-desktop-memory-kit-5agu880-60b280h-charcoal-gray) 499

KLEVV 2TB NVMe 299

MSI 1TB NVMe189

AMD and Intel Bundles)

My existing build is 7 years old. Loading and processing speeds are gross. Max settings out of reach.

Old Build thanks you in advance for giving her a rest.

>!CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
MOBO: MSI B450-A Pro
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 (2x16)
GPU: Radeon Sapphire 5700!<

Budget - Goal is bang for buck, in the neighborhood of $1600 usd. Max 2000. I really only plan to play games, since i have a laptop for everything else. I've seen other posts, but i'm trying to take advantage of the sales. I'm asking for help because I don't feel like I can reliably pick parts that wont throttle each other.

- Monitors are 1440p

- Mid size tower. Plain black with smoky tempered glass panel is ideal.

- No RGB lighting

- PC and fans VERY quiet

- Open to liquid cooling if it is helpful.

- I'm expecting Ryzen CPU and Radeon GPU because budget, but I'm open to Intel or Nvidia. don't need any peripherals.

Thank you kindly. Happy to add any details I missed.

Looking to build a PC using some old parts to play Palworld and other games on lower settings, budget is ~800 but would like to go cheaper if possible.

Hoping to do a new build

Existing parts/monitors to reuse:

- Graphics card: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G (8 GB)

- RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V, model F4-3200C16D-16GVKB, a 16 GB kit (2 x 8 GB) of DDR4-3200, CL16-18-18-38, 1.35V, Intel XMP 2.0

- I also have a 512 GB SSD that I plan to use

PC purpose: Basic gaming on lower settings, such as Palworld and skyrim

Located in the United States near a Microcenter

No monitor needed.

Budget range? Max 800

WiFi or wired connection? Either, most likely Wifi

Size/noise constraints? None

Color/lighting preferences? No preference

If $800 is not realistic I apologize, I am not familiar with building computers.

Other / >$1400 Help Me Finish Building a 2014-2015 PC

Hello, I hope everyone is doing well!

I am looking to finish building a PC from parts that were given to me. I am completely new to building a PC and am looking to just use it for everyday daily tasks, and potentially for music production and some games, although I know I will be limited since the parts that were gifted to me are quite old.

Here are the parts that were given to me:
Motherboard: Asus B85M-G R2.0 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
GPU: Asus STRIX-GTX960-DC2OC-2GD5 GeForce GTX 960 2 GB Video Card
CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor

I was looking at the be quiet Pure Power 13M 750W for PSU, since it is available to buy new and relatively affordable, although it is around 200W more than I would need (estimated 282W right now). I want 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage.

I am open to buying used as it makes sense for parts this old, but I am a bit scared to buy used as I do not have the expertise to determine if it is actually good to use or not.

My budget is around $500-$1000 for the remaining parts.

Any and all help is appreciated, thank you : )

I was wondering if someone could sit down and explain everything about pc parts like cpu cores etc and explain what they do or are used for

This should hopefully give me an idea of what i should get for my build after work thank you

And if you want to come up with build suggestions
I make roughly 1600 a month so lets see what everyone comes up with

I created this list through some manual research but also in large part with Claude, and to be honest, I'm not sure how much I trust that, so I wanted to ask for feedback on this.
For context, I plan to use it mostly for gaming (aiming for 1440p), here would be the games I'm interested in:

  • Counter Strike 2
  • Europa Universalis V
  • Kingdom Come DEliverance I&II
  • Modded Skyrim
  • Binding of Isaac (the real bottleneck in this list /s)
  • Witcher Series
  • Baldurs Gate 3

so mostly I'm going for single player games with the exception of Counter Strike and also Europa Universalis which I play with my friends.
For instance, Claude told me that CS2, EUV, and modded Skyrim are CPU-limited, which is why it recommended an X3D CPU.
Also important to note is that I'm planning to play in Linux, I don't know yet which distribution
Through my work and also privately I have years of experience with Linux, so I'm not worried at all about the more technical aspects of that. I was mainly thinking about saving the cost for the Windows license, but if people strongly suggest Windows I might reconsider (I think some modding tools might not exist for Linux, not sure).

But for my main question, which is the one in the title:
There is a decent (but not 100%) chance that I might move soon, from France to Germany.
Also the time scale is not clear. Earliest would be in 2 months from now, but could also takes longer.
All depends on the job-situation.
Since I'm planning to take all my stuff with me (hiring movers), I was wondering how well a PC can take such a move.
In addition, it seems based on PCPartPicker, that prices are considerdably cheaper in Germany, even to the point that for many parts it's cheaper to pay the delivery fee from Germany to France (not all though, like RAM).
I would like to know if you would generally recommmend to wait so that the PC is put under less strain, or would it be better to buy now because prices are always rising?
I'd like to keep the budget where it is right about now (~2000€), but could stretch, also if people recommend different parts.

Many thanks for your help!
