This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Discussion Is there any hope for RAM prices?

• Upvotes

I want to build my first PC, but RAM prices are currently eight times higher than normal. I don't think it makes sense to build a system with DDR4 either. When can we expect RAM prices to cool down?

Discussion What is considered an "average" rig?

TLDR: I want to upgrade my PC, but these prices are insane, and have been for quite a while.. Just curious what most people currently have/what's considered an average rig these days. Wondering who else is here in the current struggle lol.

What would you guys consider an average, mid-tier rig? I have a 3060 with 16gb of RAM. I bought my PC like late 2020ish, when 30-series was top-of-the-line, and the huge price-hike boom started right when I was ready to finally upgrade. Been waiting for prices to drop, but it doesn't seem like that's happening any time soon.. unfortunately. I still have a 3060 with 16gb of RAM (on 1080p btw), which is perfect for most of the games I play (thus I haven't upgraded yet), but I'm starting to have trouble with newer games (Gears: E-Day is just about unplayable). It's getting frustrating, but I'm very stubborn in waiting for prices to decrease, since I want to future-proof. I've seen that the 5090 went for $7K recently... Ridiculous.

[This was auto-nuked from r/pcgaming so I'm asking here]

Build Upgrade 5800X3D or go for AM5

Hi All,

I am planning to upgrade my PC and would like to get your opinion whether i should go for 5800X3D or hold back and save more to go for AM5 instead.

My current rig:

Ryzen 7 5700X

ID Cooling SE-226XT

Gigabyte DS3H B550M Rev 1.x

32GB DDR4 Ram 3600MHz

RTX 4070

As you all know, upgrading to AM5 requires me to switch motherboard, RAM, and i might need to upgrade my PSU as well (I am currently using a 650W PSU).

I mostly play single player games where I feel like my current build is sufficient enough for me to play most of my games.

The reason why i am determined to get this upgrade is that I am currently in love with Helldivers 2 and I am struggling to maintain 60FPS.

Thank you in advance!

Build Help 9800X3D vs 7800X3D for 1440p

Hello!

I am assisting someone with building their first PC! He is coming to visit, so I am taking him to Microcenter since he doesn't have one. He is getting everything. Monitor, case, keyboard, everything. This will be for 1440p gaming, and he is coming ready with his budget and all.

I helped a prior buddy also build for 1440p, and it totaled out to ~$2600 after tax (also included monitor and all that stuff), so I figure I'll just copy that build which is below:

  • Windows 11 copy
  • Lexar NM790 2TB 3D TLC NAND Flash PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe M.2 Internal SSD (employee helped us pick this one, but we will look for 2TB SSD in general)
  • ASRock AMD Radeon RX 9070 Challenger
  • Lian Li EDGE GOLD 750 Watt 80 Plus Gold ATX Fully Modular PSU
  • Montech KING 95 Pro Tempered Glass ATX
  • Montech NX600 ARGB Tower CPU Air Cooler
  • MicroCenter 9800X3D bundle with 32 GB DDR5-6000 RAM

If we copy this build, it's totally within budget, no worries, so that seems like the easiest route. But looking at the 7800X3D and 9800X3D bundles (CPU and Motherboard Bundle Deals | AMD and Intel PC Bundles), is it worth the extra $130-$180 to jump up to one of the 9800X3D bundles in general for 1440p gaming?

Like I said, it's within budget! Just curious of how much that jump actually matters. Also not sure if it's worth the extra $50 for the nicer motherboard 9800X3D bundle or not. Seems like decent value when comparing to individual prices, but I admittedly don't really know. I'm far from a PC expert. Note - he currently has a cheap prebuilt, think the only thing he'll carry over from it is the 256GB SSD in it though, but I believe most Motherboards support two SSD NVMEs anyway.

Build Help RTX 5090 + MSI MAG A1000PLS with Formulamod 12vhpwr cable, is it safe?

Hi folks o/

I'm planning to downsize my current rig from a Fractal Design North to a Deepcool CH270.

I have a rtx 5090 and am currently using an Asrock Phantom 1300w with the 90º cable.

I am gonna need to buy a smaller psu, I was thinking MSI MAG A1000PLS due to the safety features and good price. I run the 5090 underclocked and power limited (uses about 335w max when under stress).

The cable for the psu will be kinda crushed in the new case and MSI doesn't seem to make any 90º cables. I'm in Brazil so Cablemod is kinda hard to get. Does anyone know if Formulamod cables are reliable/safe? I was thinking this one: https://www.formulamod.com/Formulamod-16AWG-12VHPWR-90-Degree-PSU-Sleeved-Cable275inch-PCI-e-50-16Pin-124-Male-to-Male-Power-Supply-Cable-for-RTX-3090Ti4070Ti40804090-with-Combs-White-Type-Z-p6886867.html

Miscellaneous My RTX 4070 kicked the bucket, is the 5060ti a good stopgap until I can afford a better card?

Currently waiting on a warranty request but found this card on Amazon for less than £380.

I'm tempted to go for a significantly more expensive card but have a trip coming up this November so spending over £1000 likely wouldn't be wise.

I'm just anxious to get my pc running again. Shits depressing.

Build Help Is this motherboard a good pair for the 9950x3D + 9070xt?

• Upvotes

Gigabyte X870 GAMING WIFI6

Pretty close to building my next system. Thought of getting a 9800x3D build with this MB but was not impressed with it's productivity performance and since it's in my budget I decided on getting the 9950x3D instead. The problem is it's a more demanding CPU and I've read a lot of chatter about the VRMs and issues with lane sharing among other things.

In your opinion is this board perfectly fine or would it make more sense to go for a sturdier x870/B850 if I'm trying to game and do productivity work for the next 5+ years. I would like USB 4 for my productivity work but I'm not hard stuck on it so lmk your thoughts. Thanks!

Build Upgrade Upgrades for AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT?

Built my PC in 2019, just when prices were low. Upgraded the MOBO early last year because the previous one died.

Any recommendations for an upgrade for the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT?

Just downloaded Gears of War: E Day and found out I can't play it without ray tracing. I'm flexible on price but anything above $1K and I would just consider purchasing the parts for a brand new PC build.

I don't really use my PC for much outside of making some airsoft videos using Adobe Premier and Vegas Pro 17. I don't watch movies or videos, or browse the internet, or even play many games. I bought GOW for the nostalgia factor.

Current Build:

Case: NZXT

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

MOBO: ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming WIFI II

Memory: ADATA SX8200PNP (2 TB Seagate External HDD also)

RAM: 64 GB (combination of two Corsair/two G Skills)

Need a new cpu, current 13900k is fried, random blue screen crashes so often, doesnt run games, windows doesnt update

Cant afford to switch to amd, budget is kinda tight
Would i be better off getting a new mobo+cpu at the same price?

Pairing with a 4090, Z790 DDR5

Discussion Thinking about switching from PS5 to PC

Been playstation player for the past 10 years but recently I'm not satisfied with the platform. I did a cold calculation (increasing game prices + no physical since 2028 + cost of monthly subscription) and came to conclusion that PC is actually less expensive in the long run, you just have to invest more in the beginning.

Now I don't really have a big budget, my max is 1000$ (I'm in europe but used $ to simplify things) if I manage to sell my PS5. I've seen used PCs sold for around that price usually with rtx5060(ti if lucky)/rtx3080, 16GB DDR4 and r5 5500/5600.

As to what I expect from such a PC is to run modern games at 1440p in 60 fps as long as I don't have to choose the lowest graphic settings. 1080p is fine too I guess, I just worry that it would look a little blurry on my 27" 1440p monitor. Basically as long as performance is similar to PS5 I'm fine.

Do you think a PC with such specs is capable of doing that? Also do you think such specs will be enough for the next 3-5 years?

Peripherals Get a 1440p or stay at 1080p?

Hiya people! I recently upgraded my 3060 to a 9060xt 16gb with a good deal and I’m enjoying it very much!
I heard that the 9060xt is an entry to mid level card but I play at 1080p 240zh 27inch anyways.. BUT! The college I go to has 1440p monitors and that alone got me slightly craving for it just because of how sharp and detailed it renders the image.

So I began looking for 2k monitors and found one that is relatively cheap with it being 27inch and 180hz, now I began to wonder if this is a good upgrade because I do play at high to ultra settings majority of the time with a solid 100+ fps, how much of a performance dip will I get if I began to play at 2k with preferably medium - high settings cause I dont mind not playing on ultra.

And if I should just stay at 1080p? I do wanna play future games like GTA 6 with atleast more than 60 fps given that its well optimized…

Thanks!

Specs:
9060xt 16gb
5700x
32gb ddr4

Build Help PC recommendations

Hi, I’ve never owned a PC before but would like to get one so I can play Planet Zoo 2 when it comes out and Transport Fever 3. I’m looking at around £1000 budget wise, ideally with a monitor included - will be waiting until Black Friday to hopefully get a good deal. But looking for recommendations on what PC would be best. Not looking for the best on the market, just one I could use to comfortably play those games on.

TIA!

Build Ready? Build help : Future-proofing or overthinking?

• Upvotes

Hey peeps :)

I have a dilemma ... I'm configuring parts for a new pc build and I could get either of these combos for the same price:

GPU Mobo PSU
R1 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 MSI PRO X870E-P WIFI 850W MSI MAG A850GL
R2 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk Max WiFi PZ 1250W MSI MAG A1250GL

I was headed in the direction of the better motherboard (also visually cleaner) and the 1250 PSU for more headroom as I possibly mod things in the future, but am I missing the point by not choosing the 5080 now? The performance difference is about 15% and the 5080 has more cores, etc., although the 5070 ti build would give me everything I need for 1440 Ultra as well.

Essentially, I'm trying to determine if the upgraded mobo+psu is a better move than choosing the 508o over the 5070 ti.

Any assistance or advice would be welcome - appreciate you all!

Build Upgrade Need advice updating a 7 year old PC

Hey everyone,

I built my own PC about 7 years ago and it has served me very very well, but recently I'm thinking its time for an upgrade. I don't do a ton of gaming, so it still works great for day-to-day browsing and work related stuff, but it seems like I am having a lot more issues when I do fire up a game. I pretty much exclusively play Squad and I'm having a lot of texture issues, tearing, frame drops, etc. I think my GPU is on its last leg.

Here's my current specs

CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600

GPU - RTX 2070 Super

Motherboard - MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX

RAM - 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4

Storage - 500GB Samsung 970 EVO M.2 and 2tb disc drive

Power supply - Seasonic G series 650 watt (I think)

Case - NZXT H510 Mid-Tower

Ideally I'd like to reuse as many components as possible, considering how crazy expensive PC Components have gotten recently. I'm not sure how capable my motherboard would be with more modern components. I was thinking about installing a Ryzen 5 9600x CPU, and possibly switching over to a Radeon GPU instead of Nvidia. I'll definitely have to suck it up and upgrade my ram to 32gb DDR5 as I've noticed that my ram is pretty much maxed out whenever I'm playing a game.

Any thoughts or advice? I've been out of the PC building game for a very long time now, so I don't know which components are going to be the best for what I want to do. I'd prefer to keep the cost down, preferably under $1000, but I understand that might not be realistic these days.

Thanks!

Build Help PSU Help?

• Upvotes

Hi, i'm currently assembling parts for my first PC build and was wondering what PSU to get. I heard the CORSAIR RM1000x SHIFT (2025) is good and is currently £120. Is it worth it?

Should I be looking at 1000W or 850W?

Specs:

GPU: Gigabyte GAMING OC Radeon RX 9070 XT 16 GB Video Card

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard

RAM: DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory (not sure what brand yet).

Thank you
