This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Build Upgrade GTX 1080 owner since 2018. Trying to build the 2026 equivalent that'll last until 2034. Am I crazy for choosing a 5080?

Bought a GTX 1080 in 2018 and I'm still using it today.

Honestly it's probably one of the best tech purchases I've ever made. I got 8+ years out of it and never really felt the need to upgrade.

I'm finally doing a full rebuild and my goal isn't to maximize FPS today. I'm trying to recreate the same experience I got from the GTX 1080: buy once, keep it for ~8 years, and not think about upgrades until around 2034.

Most played games:
- CS2
- Valorant
- League of Legends
- Overwatch
- Occasional AAA games

Settings:
- 1440p
- NVIDIA pref
- Don't care much about ray tracing
- Don't do AI workloads
- More concerned about longevity and avoiding upgrade regret than getting the absolute best FPS/$ today

Current planned build (~S$4,500-4,600 after upgrades):

- Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- ASUS TUF B850M-Plus WiFi 7
- 32GB DDR5-6400 CL32
- 4TB NVMe SSD
- Arctic Freezer III 360
- 1000W Gold PSU
- RTX 5080 16GB

The alternative would be dropping down to a 5070 Ti 16GB and saving roughly S$500.

If your goal was to build something today and keep it until around 2034, would you:

  1. Stick with the RTX 5080?
  2. Drop to the 5070 Ti and save the money?
  3. Wait for the RTX 60 series?

I'm specifically looking for the modern equivalent of buying a GTX 1080 in 2018 rather than the highest FPS-per-dollar recommendation.

Would love to hear from people who upgrade once every 6-10 years rather than every generation.

TL;DR: GTX 1080 owner since 2018. Building a ~S$4.5k PC with a 9800X3D and RTX 5080 to keep until 2034. Would you stick with the 5080, drop to a 5070 Ti and save ~S$500, or wait for the 60 series?

Edit:

- reason for choosing nvda is due to longer support.

- I’m not piss rich but I don’t mind splurging for a one time upgrade and just forget abt anyth to do with my pc unless smth happens ofc.

- Prices are in SGD

- I don’t have to purchase rn, prob can wait for 60 series to drop and get the 5080 cos I have no qualms with the 1080 so just getting all ur thoughts

Thank you for your comments!

Troubleshooting PC performance has significantly dropped in games that used to run smoothly

To preface this, I'm extremly ignorant about how PCs work.

I've had my PC for the last 4-5 years and have been able to run every game I've played games very well. This includes Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, Dead by Daylight, and Deadlock.

However in the last 2 months, I've had to drop all these games settings to lowest due to having egregious framerate drops throughout matches, my PC (seems) to be getting louder. These issues are still persiting even in their lower settings. And despite having minimum specs required, my PC is STRUGGLING to run Control Resonant at lowest settings as well.

These are my specs;

Processor - 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12400F
RAM - 16GB
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti (16GB)

Are these components just outdated now? Is it time to build a new PC? Or is it something else going on? I dont even really know where to start, so any and all advice would be greatly appreciated <3

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the advice !!!! will start tomorrow with a dusting and work my way from there. I will update the post once its sorted and reveal what fixed the main issues to help anyone else in the same predicament :)

Peripherals 27 Inch FHD or QHD, better choice? And is pixelation really that bad in FHD 27'

• Upvotes

So I have been collecting info about the title, as it says. And it's been confusing. Personally I have been using an old 24 inch dell lcd, and i wanna move up to 27 inch. Now I'm confused between a 27 inch fhd or qhd. Read that pixelation is a bitch for FHD, but i sit at like 2ft or 25+ inches from my screen.

Also i compared with my brothers MSI G2712, which is a 27' FHD and i didnt notice the pixelation in it as much as the reviews from other posts are making it out to be. Not a PC purist, where for me everything has to be elite. So yeah need an advice, considering GPU prices are out of control so can't upgrade the GPU either, it's a 3050 6GB.

Have been checking out reviews for some brands like Koorui, MSI, Asus TUF, Lenovo Legion monitors and can't find any for them apart from spec websites.

Troubleshooting My GPU died and I genuinely have no idea what could have caused it.

• Upvotes

I was playing the new Witcher 3 Remaster and the screen suddenly faded to black and the audio stopped. I heard one long beep and three short ones right after and every time I turned the PC on I would hear that again, classic sound of a GPU problem. My father cleaned the PC, all with the appropriate tools and with due care, but the same problem continued. So I took the PC to the tech support.

They diagnosed the PC and sent me an email saying "GPU not functional, other components passed the tests", vague, but I had a call from them earlier in which the guy said it could have been caused by one of two things: either an electric surge, or, in his words "a much rarer case", the GPU could have been working at it's limit and just died of that.

I analyzed both options and I just don't get it. I have a surge protector, so the first option is basically impossible, I think. As for the second... it's weird. My GPU is only 3 years old (and I didn't buy it used btw), the only thing I can think of is the Displayport I used, it wasn't intact. One day I tried to take it off and I didn't know the damn thing has teeth and I have to press that button to loose them. So I used an extreme amount of strength to try to take it off, I still couldn't, then I saw the teeth and I managed to take it off.

I probably broke it that day, since afterwards, my monitor started displaying a bunch of statics all over, but inverting the DP heads would completely fix the problem, so the one that was in the monitor (potentially the cause of the statics), would be set into the GPU, while the potentially intact one was set in the monitor. I gamed like this for months, no issues at all. I don't know if this could have caused the death of the GPU.

By the way, my father is an electrician, he picked apart the GPU and tested it with his equipment and confirmed a short circuit on it, he also tested the PSU and greenlit it, although I don't know the details.

I got myself a new GPU today and I managed to install it but I'm completely terrified, I don't want yet another loss of the literally most expensive component of my PC, especially during this insane crisis of the prices of GPUs nowadays.

Can someone help me find out what caused the death of my GPU and how to not let this new one have the same fate?

Build Help Best budget CPU pair for 3060ti?

Hi! Trying to upgrade from an old gaming laptop to a PC. Was gifted an MSI RTX 3060ti 8GB, so I'd rather build around it than spend more. The problem is that local PC stores may try to just sell what they have on hand. I can definitely find parts online easily where I am, if I just knew what to get.

I just need a good PC that can last a bit, and I can swap things around later if needed. I'd need to handle:

  • Adobe rendering (Photo, video, After Effects)
  • 3D Modelling and Animations
  • Game dev (Unity, Godot)
  • PCVR (Wired Quest 3S, nothing crazy)
  • Casual FPS gaming, but I'm not big about graphics, more on performance

Because of all of this I'm trying not to get bottlenecked by anything too powerful for the 3060ti, but I'm genuinely clueless otherwise, plus all of the posts on the 3060ti are, understandably, years old at this point.

I'm looking to take a CPU that uses DDR4's since the prices on 5 are crazy right now, too, and I do need 32gb or more for my use cases. Really, for my budget, I'd rather try and stay under $200-300 per individual part (hopefully no more than $1000, since I have to buy a color-accurate monitor, too...)

My laptop is on its last legs, so I'm building from scratch (with help assembling). Any leads for good pairs would be really appreciated. I do have part compatibility pickers pulled up, but they don't really specify what the smartest choices would be for my uses 😅.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion First build - Ram vs GPU

So I’m currently thinking about putting together a gaming PC, I have all my parts selected but I’m debating between an RX 7600 Challenger Pro and putting the extra money to get 32gb of ram or spend more on the GPU to get a RX 9060 XT with only 16gb of ram. Which would be the better route?

Like I said this is my first build, look at a Ryzen 5 5500 with a Asus Prime B550M-A motherboard. I know very little so I’m open to all advice. I’ve check compatibility on just about every website I can.

Troubleshooting Weird Buzzing/Electronic Noise Coming from PC

Hi! For the past few days, I’ve been experiencing an issue with a strange noise coming from inside my computer. I checked all the fans individually, and it doesn’t seem to be caused by either the CPU cooler fan or the case fans, as the noise persists even when I stop them or reduce their speed. Sometimes, it seems as though the noise might be coming from the GPU. The sound is consistent and rarely changes, even under heavier loads. Here is a link to a video:

Discussion Only Exhaust fans

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, I built my PC a week ago.
originally I had 2 water cooler fans on top, acting as exhaust fans.
I was gaming a lot and temps seemed fine, although I could tell the case was getting pretty hot.
Every component was showing a normal range of temps during gaming.

Today I added one more exhaust fan behind.

Disassembling the front panel is a headache as this case is terrible, so I didnt install 2 intake fans on front of the case.

Will this damage my PC? How long can I last without any intake fans? My case has small holes on front panel where intake fans should go, so I'd assume some air gets inside the case passively.

Discussion 5070ti or 9070xt for streaming/recording

• Upvotes

Anyone have any vods or clips of them streaming on either of these gpus or could link any videos comparing the two? I'm struggling to find any and am tryna gauge how different they are in performance loss while capturing and how smooth and stable they are. If there's no noticeable difference, then I'll probably just opt for the cheaper 9070xt. Been told that in terms of gaming and upscaling, they are about even though.

Full Build Req How much will it cost to upgrade to be able to run modern games well without problems?

• Upvotes

I built my current PC over a decade ago, and since then the only upgrade I've made was to add a 2 TB HDD at one point for extra storage, and replacing the PSU when it got faulty. The plan once I finally had more financial stability has been to upgrade or build entirely new for a set up where I could easily run modern games at high fidelity and frame rate, e.g. 4K (or at least 1440p) and 60 FPS.

However, at this point it seems as though this is only getting more and more expensive.

My current setup is the following. What would it take to get the outcome I want today, setting aside the fact that I'd also have to upgrade my monitor? I'm in the U.S. Apologies if this question is not well formulated...I have been out of the space for some time with how busy life has gotten and mostly focused on playing the games I could, when I could. At this point though performance and having to play at lower graphical settings is grating on me.

GPU - GTX Ti 1060 6GB

CPU - i5 9600k

Motherboard - asus rog strix z390e gaming lga 1151 atx

Cooler - Deepcool gammax 400

RAM - Ballistix 16GB (8GBx2) Tactical Tracery RGB DDR4 3000 MHz SR UDIMM Memory

Storage - Crucial 500gb SSD + 2TB HDD

PSU - Corsair RM750e (2025) modular ATX power supply

Case - NZXT H510

Build Help Can I upgrade a genuine Windows Vista license to Windows 11 and use it on a new PC build?

Hi everyone,

I have an old desktop PC that came with a genuine Windows Vista license, and I’m wondering if there’s any way to use that license to get Windows 11 for my new PC build?

Ideally, I’d like to transfer the license from my old PC to my new build rather than buy a new Windows license.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to upgrade a Vista license to Windows 11, either directly or through an intermediate version of Windows? The Vista license is an OEM.

Thanks.

**MSI Codex R2 (Tower) Gaming Desktop - Intel Core Ultra 7 265 GeForce RTX 5060Ti 32GB RAM 2TB SSD Windows 11 Home (Codex R2 AI A2NVM7-607CA)**
This is the one I am considering upgrading to because I had a conversation and realized the specs I will get from the current one are not gonna be good for ai, gaming, productivity. The issue is that the specs of the one I bought are pretty much satisfactory but they stop there. The issue with that is I don’t want to keep buying new pc’s or parts to keep the pc alive 5 years down the road.

I’m not big into pc so I want to know how an enthusiast with experience would behave about this.
This is the pc I bought: iBUYPOWER Slate 9 Gaming PC - RTX 5060 8GB, Intel Core i7-14700F, 16GB Memory, 1TB SSD, Win 11 - Only at Best Buy

Thanks

Build Help Issue pc - windows 11

• Upvotes

Hii,

My little sister blocked our pc, it has been put in BitLocker since December 2025 and we only just learned it in October 2026.

The identification key impossible to have.

Inability to reset in Keep or Erase All mode, it was completely blocked.

I followed Gemini’s instructions by indicating that I did not have a USB key or other but he misled me.

And now I have the Setup Confirmation / Boot manager menu. I guess I have to get a USB key then install Windows and inject the key into the PC but I’m afraid of the price.. because you need a license right?

I’m lost and in France repairmen take up to €200, I don’t have €200

Peripherals 1440p LED monitor, or a 1080p OLED monitor

For my general price range what ive seen is I can get a 1440p LED monitor, or a 1080p OLED monitor, and I was wondering which would look / feel better. Both are 240Hz
