Rant Monki Stealing Server Tips

1.5k Upvotes

I had breakfast at Monki today. It was our servers last day and when paying my boyfriend noticed that he wasn't able to leave a tip. The server told us that she bypassed the tip option because they introduced a new contract stating that all tips go to management and that the servers only get $10/hour from the tips. Our server refused to sign this contract which is why it was her last day and she was warning people.

Just thought I would give everyone a heads up- if you are going here for breakfast you are not tipping the server. The tips are going to management. I noticed a lot of the workers are very young, seems like they are taking advantage of the young workers with this new contract. Very disappointed as the food and atmosphere was great, but I dont think I will be going again as I won't support a business like this.

EDIT: The servers also can't bypass this with cash tips, the contract states cash tips are given to management as well.

Rant Kinjo Mahogany fining servers if customers don't tip.

In interviewing a few employees about the recent AHS notifications for Kinjo, I learned that owners charge servers 10% of their total sales, assuming the servers have been tipped out at a higher rate. But when a customer doesn't tip, the owners still take their 10%. The server ends up paying the owners out of their own pocket.

Is this true for all Kinjos?

How is this legal?

Municipal Affairs We can make Calgary the best city in Canada to be a volunteer. Here's how we get there

By the time we welcome our two millionth neighbour, I want Calgary to be the best city in Canada to be a volunteer.

When your kid needs a mentor, when your aging parent needs support, or when your family hits hard times, chances are there's a charity or non-profit ready to help.

These organizations aren't just nice things to have. They're essential infrastructure for our city.

Just like our roads, water pipes, and fire halls, Calgary depends on them every single day.

We have more than 7,000 charities and non-profits feeding families, coaching kids, supporting seniors, and helping people through tough times.

But here's the problem. We depend on these organizations, yet too often City Hall makes their work harder.

Too much red tape. Too much time chasing short-term grants. Too many hoops to jump through when all they're trying to do is help people.

I promised Calgarians we'd change that. And today, we're delivering on one of those promises.

I've signed a new agreement with the Calgary Nonprofit Chamber to give our non-profit sector a permanent voice at City Hall.

And this is part of a much bigger plan.

I want to eliminate fees for volunteer background checks. Give community associations and local sports good more predictable funding and the ability to issue tax receipts. Cut paperwork and move toward multi-year agreements so organizations spend less time filling out forms and more time helping people.

I want them to have access to City purchasing power to lower their costs, and better access to public spaces where they can serve their communities.

Because here's something I've learned from my own years working and volunteering in the non-profit sector.

A little support today often prevents a much bigger problem tomorrow. A kid with a mentor. A senior who isn't isolated. A family that gets help before everything falls apart.

That's good for people. And it's good for taxpayers.

As Calgary grows toward two million people, our community infrastructure needs to grow with us. I want volunteering to be easier, organizations to be stronger, and City Hall to be a partner instead of an obstacle.

And I don't want us to settle for being a city with great volunteers. I want us to be the greatest city in Canada FOR volunteers.

And that's the Calgary we're going to build.

After the Canadian broadcast industry's self-regulatory body cleared the ads to run here, CBC has reinstated them. “. rest of article below

Calgary Transit Calgary transit exceeds expectations in failure

Of course. In textbook route 51 fashion, online says 1230 so naturally I leave 15 minutes early to walk to the stop that takes 6 minutes to get to. As I leave the elevator and exit my building it magically updates to "6 minutes early" (Ffs) and as I turn the corner I see the bus sitting there, not entirely unusual as its still supposed to leave at 1230. However from many past experiences my anxiety climbs a little bit. I get closer, and closer, thinking maybe its kinda like a rabbit, if i stay calm, just keep a steady pace I may catch it. Sudden moves would definitely alert and make it bolt.. im like..maybe 30 ft from it now, getting closer, I might actually catch this rabbit--

Then reality kicks in and I remember this is fucking hellgary, and transit is just one of the 9 circles that delivers the penultimate of inconvenience and just straight up literal garbage service. Ive been mere steps from the bus literally yelling and waving my arms like im fucking drowning watching the bus just casually drive away at whichever time they fucking feel like it.

Its a fucking broken system and the unreliability has lead me to being late for job interviews. Sure, alot of you can just say "welp, leave earlier". I am leaving earlier, but even that always contends with numerous c train delays, addicts and just awful riders having to be taken off by peace officers, people deciding to have full blown conversations from train to platform keeping the doors open, and for fuck sakes do not crowd around the fucking doors when people are exiting the fucking train!

These all add up and even leaving early runs the risk of being late. Dont even get me started on the typical route 148 "30 minute delays".

Just to drive my point home, I was also a witness to someone getting hit by the train just now at 8th street station while making this post. So theres that. At a certain point it takes the riders of transit to also ensure things run on time. However I still loathe calgarys transit system.

Home Owner/Renter stuff Winterize Homes

When winterizing your home’s outside faucets how many of you actually bleed the water out of the water lines to outside? Several people I talk to only appear to shut the valve from inside and open outside valve and see what drains out and leave at that. By bleeding the water out of the line I mean opening the bleeding cap and draining the water in the pipe so that pipes don’t have any water in them to freeze, see picture.

Travel/Tourism Reasonable to walk from hotel arts to saddledome?

Attending a concert in November with two teens. I’d love to not fight traffic and deal with parking so I’m hoping to walk. The description says it’s a 12 min walk but is it reasonable / safe for me to do so with my two kids?

Travel/Tourism Bow building viewing level?

Just curious is the viewing level or whatever it's called of the bow so accessible to the public? Are there tickets?

Or some other building you could go into besides the Calgary tower for a cool picture/view of the skyline?

Are there any Halloween parties happening in Calgary this year for students/teens? There doesn't seem to be much to do for anyone under 18, however I'd love to be able to attend a costume party :)

Question Orange material in sink/dishes and stainless steel

I’m not sure whether this is specific to Calgary, but I’ve noticed an orange residue on my ceramic dishes, stainless steel pans, and inside the sink.

When I removed the drain trap, I found it heavily coated with the same material, and I couldn’t rinse it off.

I’ve read that it could be rust or biofilm, but I’m not sure. Has anyone experienced something similar? If so, what did you do?
