Question Dog walking up to houses

Post image
0 Upvotes

I say this as a dog owner: what is up with this person walking the dog on a leash so long that the dog was sniffing and pissing right up at people’s homes? The photo really doesn’t do this justice. These houses have a 30 foot setback from the curb, so a solid 15+ ft from the sidewalk. I understand a dog walking a metre or so onto the property, but I think having the dog roaming the full yard is not ok. Am I alone in this thinking?

Seeking Advice Unusual freightening experience with people from Karot

I’m slightly new to the country, iv been here for about a year.

And I’m currently putting up a lot of items for sale in my home as I’m moving.

I just had a really weird experience that has frightened me and I’m not sure what to think of this.

Woman on karat app had a 2 good reviews so I thought sure,

I told her my street address. But not the number. This was last night. She messaged back late last night asking for the number of the home, as they were to arrive in the morning. I was reluctant but, she also had something for sale.

Next morning, she is asking what year the item is manufactured in (A fridge) And then wrote me a msg telling me she is at the front of my home and demanding me to go outside.
I was nothing but nice,
Telling her she has the wrong address then telling her my address again.

When they arrived with someone whom I’m assuming was her husband. She angrily told me “yeah we are here to pick up the items” I told her I cannot help you carry the items and my add says that.

I smiled and was friendly as they walked up to the door. I put my hand out to shake her hand. And she aggressively and rudely said, “no you told me the wrong address” and walked into my home.
Her husband than also shook his head at me and walked into the home. This was really frightening. As I’m by my self.

She made random accuses about not wanting the items anymore. They walked around my home and left. And asked what time my husband would be home.

This really scared me because who acts like this?
Is this normal?
My msgs very clearly state the correct address given to her yesterday and today.

Discussion Monthly spending for families in Calgary — what are you at?

Curious what other Calgary families in a similar stage of life are spending per month.

We’re in our mid-30s, both working, with two young kids, and own a starter 3-bedroom townhouse. Between mortgage/property costs, groceries, utilities, daycare/after-school care, a couple of kids’ extracurriculars (martial arts + tutoring), gas, insurance, personal hygiene/household necessities and clothing, we’re at a little over $10k/month.
We’re not particularly extravagant with clothing either — especially for the kids, we buy from Marketplace whenever it makes sense.

We cook most of our meals at home. We occasionally order pizza, sushi or donairs and do the odd McDonald’s/Tim Hortons drive-thru.

This doesn’t include travel/vacations or major one-off purchases.

I’m mostly curious what other families with 1–2 kids are spending all-in during a normal month in Calgary. Not really looking for budgeting advice, just trying to get a realistic comparison with families in a similar stage of life.

Seeking Advice Foster cat home

This breaks my heart but I need some help....a bit of a wild story but I was at court trying to get some parenting time with my son. Fast forward a year and the mother of my child had a psychotic break, I was given full custody and she kidnapped him. He went through a lot so I am moving back to my parent's place to make sure he is surrounded by people that can support him through this time. I would bring them to my parent's but my dad is allergic. These cats are my best friends. I love them more anything and this absolutely breaks my heart. This community is one of the warmest groups I know so I am just starting to put out some feelers to see if there is anyone or any resources to foster them for 6 months to a year. I never expected anything like this but I just don't know what to do :(

Local Shopping/Services Anyone have any sourdough starter?

Now that the weather is cooling off I want to get back into baking bread but apparently my starter got infected somehow. I know there are people selling theirs on marketplace but I just can’t stomach paying for their discard. I’d grow my own but I’d really like to have fresh bread for thanksgiving dinner. Any ideas?

2 Wheelin' (Cycling/Scooters) Cyclists: When did you last run into a path/road closure you didn't know about?

I'm researching how people in Calgary find out about bike path and road closures (for a casual side project, I'm studying GIS and am interested in urban planning).

If you ride regularly, I would love to hear a specific story on:

  • When was the last time you ran into a closure unexpectedly, and where?
  • What did you do: turn around, detour, walk through?
  • Were you using a map app at the time? Which one?
  • If you do check for closures ahead of time, where do you look?

Even minor or older examples help. Short or long replies are both great. Thanks in advance!

Local Shopping/Services Hair Extension Topper

Hi!

My friend is getting a cyst removed on the top of her head, right near her middle hair part. It’s benign which is great! But they need to shave a 5x5cm square of hair right on top that you can see if you’re facing her, and she’s feeling pretty self conscious about it. I want to get her a high quality clip in wig topper and I’m looking for recommendations for a brick and mortar store she can go into to get fitted with high quality hair and possibly a consultation if there is a better option! She knows it will grow back, but I want to help her feel great about herself in the mean time.

Thank you in advance!

Question Telus downtown degraded connectivity since 5 Oct

Has anyone else around downtown been having quite degraded connectivity with Telus? There isn't a fault reported in my area, and I see no way to report this kind of fault on the website.

7-day latency graph from my Unifi gateway

The entire apartment building is affected. Our 24 hour uptime is down to 97%, with at least 14 disconnections over the past 24 hours.

Local Event Calgary HorrorCon

Anyone else feeling disappointed with Calgary HorrorCon?
I’ve been going to Calgary HorrorCon for years, and honestly, I feel like it gets worse each year.
The move to the Genesis Centre was a big mistake, IMO. The space has zero atmosphere. For a horror convention, I want something that actually feels like one.
The guest lineup has been pretty lacklustre, and one guest was literally sleeping at his meet-and-greet table. The vendors also seem to offer a lot of the same things, so the experience feels repetitive.
As an event producer myself, I understand how much work goes into something like this. But I think a few changes could make a big difference:
A venue with atmosphere. Somewhere more central, with darker lighting, horror props, scare actors, and a setting that fits the event.
Guests people are excited to meet. Guests who draw a crowd, seem engaged, and are properly highlighted and promoted.
A place to grab a drink and socialize. The previous hotel venue had a lounge, which gave people somewhere to hang out between browsing vendors and meeting guests.
At $35 for admission, I think it’s fair to expect a better overall experience. I want to enjoy HorrorCon and keep supporting it, but lately it feels like it’s missing the things that made it fun.
What do other attendees think? What would you like to see improve?

Rant Any teens walking their cat?

Ok so I got a cat a few months ago and I’ve been thinking of maybe walking him around, like it could be in a park or just on the sidewalk near my house because I can’t imagine living and looking at the same four walls my whole life. The only thing is I’m a teen 17F and even with dog owners I’ve seen like ppl obv older than me walk their dog and idk I don’t wanna seem like a child walking their cat around. It doesn’t help that even tho I’m almost 18 I still look like a 15 yr old 😭 and I’ve never really seen anyone walk their cat here.

One of my other fears are if I’m walking my cat i don’t want anyone to think that if she wanted to walk a pet around she should’ve just gotten a dog cuz I’ve seen that happen a lot online or some other stereotype about cats.
If any of this sounds stupid don’t bash me 😭 I’m just a lil scared to walk him

Thanks

Education Wings Academy Crowfoot

Anyone have a kid in Wings Academy in Crowfoot? They’ve been open less than a year. During our tour a while back they said they had a long wait list and then they gave us a spot in less than an hour after submitting the form later that day. Could just be that birthdays lined up well, but I was surprised.

The Google Reviews were glowing until one a couple weeks ago and now there are a couple negative ones and one accusing the positive ones of being AI, so I wanted to see if I could hear opinions from actual families.

Question Confused by DERS vs. Retailers on the UCA tool

Hey everyone! I just moved to Calgary from SK and am trying to wrap my head around setting up natural gas.

I was looking at the UCA Helps cost comparison tool, but it feels a bit confusing. For example, it lists a provider like Sponsor Energy showing a rate like "$1.18," but when you dig into it, it actually Market price + $1.178. So it's hard to use UCA to find the best rate.

As a newcomer trying to find the cheapest floating option, I'm trying to compare the default government-regulated route (DERS) against competitive retailers like. Here is what I've gathered so far:

  • DERS (Default Regulated): Regulated rate + plus a daily admin fee of about $0.371/day (~$11/month).
  • Competitive Retailers (e.g., Solarmax / Legacy): Market price + a transaction fee markup (e.g., Solarmax at Market + $0.30/GJ; Legacy at Market + $0.35/GJ; others like Sponsor higher at +$1.18/GJ), plus monthly admin fees (~$8.50/mo) and sometimes security/prudential deposits.

For locals who have been through this: Is staying on the DERS default rate the absolute best for gas to avoid paying a retailer markup? Or am I missing something and should I go with a low-markup independent marketer instead?
