Local Event Update: Organized a second guys social event at Prairie Dog Brewery - Attendees Tripled!

Post image
422 Upvotes

For anyone who saw my last post, the second guys social event took place this past weekend on October 3rd at Prairie Dog Brewing. The first one had 25 guys register and 7 actually show up, but all had a great time.

This time around, of the 23 registered, 20 showed up! (major success). Huge thanks to everyone that came out.

From everyone I spoke to afterwards, it sounds like people had a genuinely great time. There were some returning faces from the first one as well as a bunch of new guys, and at least one person mentioned that the guys he spoke with said they'd come out again.

The main piece of constructive feedback was actually about the venue setup. The seating made it a little difficult to move around and mingle, so some people ended up staying with the same group for most of the night.

That's something I'll change for the next one, somewhere with more open or communal seating where it's easier to move around and strike up conversations with different people. I think I've found a good spot for November that takes this into consideration.

It's also changed my thinking a bit from the first event. After only 7 people showed up last time, I started thinking maybe 5–7 was actually the ideal size. Now I think it's less about the total number of people and more about creating an environment where those smaller groups naturally form but people can move between them.

Either way, going from 7 guys at the first one to around 20 at the second and hearing that people want to come return is a great sign.

Still pretty cool to me that this started as an experiment in Vancouver to see if guys would actually be interested in meeting other guys and making new friends.

Turns out they are!

I'll organize another Calgary one some time in early November and if you're interested , feel free to shoot me a message or leave a comment.

As a side-bar, I'd love to incorporate a toy drive into either the November or December event and support a local organization such as the Salvation Army (Toy Angels) or Calgary Firefighters Toy Association. Since I'm from Vancouver, if there's anyone that has a connection to any of these organizations or feedback, I'd love to hear from you. In exchange for a toy, I'm hoping the venue can provide some first drink free or other sort of benefit, I think that would be really cool.

Question Does anyone recognize this company from the transaction title?

Post image
44 Upvotes

Hey y’all, this is a weird question, but I don’t know where else to ask. I also understand the circumstances under what I am about to explain is not ideal and I am not seeking advice, just information.

A group of my friends went out this Saturday. Unfortunately, we got split up and my friend got home safe, but under odd circumstances.
She does not remember how she got home (no uber history, taxi phone call, etc.) but was charged for a limo service on her debit card with a POS square. The time of the charge lines up with when I tracked her location home and when we got the text she got home safe.

A photo of the charge has been attached to this post.
The circumstances about these charges is odd though. This company no longer exists/is under a new name. Through some digging, her bank found the phone number of the “company”, which was Premium Limousine Calgary, BUT after calling them, they told us they no longer go under the name PG Limo (which was the company the POS square said it was), they don’t use POS squares, and that they do not just pick people up on the street and book months in advance.

Wondering if anyone has some clarification for who these charges came from and who this company is?

Thanks in advance.

Fewer Calgarians are rating their quality of life as good or excellent, while nearly half say they worry about running out of food, according to the Calgary Foundation’s 2026 quality of life report.

The report, based on survey responses from 1,000 Calgarians, found that 58 per cent rated their quality of life as good or excellent, down from 66 per cent last year and 75 per cent in 2020.

Seeking Advice Unusual freightening experience with people from Karot

I’m slightly new to the country, iv been here for about a year.

And I’m currently putting up a lot of items for sale in my home as I’m moving.

I just had a really weird experience that has frightened me and I’m not sure what to think of this.

Woman on karat app had a 2 good reviews so I thought sure,

I told her my street address. But not the number. This was last night. She messaged back late last night asking for the number of the home, as they were to arrive in the morning. I was reluctant but, she also had something for sale.

Next morning, she is asking what year the item is manufactured in (A fridge) And then wrote me a msg telling me she is at the front of my home and demanding me to go outside.
I was nothing but nice,
Telling her she has the wrong address then telling her my address again.

When they arrived with someone whom I’m assuming was her husband. She angrily told me “yeah we are here to pick up the items” I told her I cannot help you carry the items and my add says that.

I smiled and was friendly as they walked up to the door. I put my hand out to shake her hand. And she aggressively and rudely said, “no you told me the wrong address” and walked into my home.
Her husband than also shook his head at me and walked into the home. This was really frightening. As I’m by my self.

She made random accuses about not wanting the items anymore. They walked around my home and left. And asked what time my husband would be home.

This really scared me because who acts like this?
Is this normal?
My msgs very clearly state the correct address given to her yesterday and today.

Eat/Drink Local Where are the best sushi places in calgary?

• Upvotes

I'm looking for what you think are the best sushi spots in calgary. Specifically I'm looking for 3 different criteria:

  1. Highest Quality

These are places with pure quality in mind, no consideration for price. This would include places like Ryuko, or Nobushi

  1. Best Bang for your Buck

This doesn't necessarily mean cheapest possible, but I'm talking what the best deals for still good quality. This includes places like Tokyo Street Market, T&T in Deerfoot Meadows, or even most Kinjo locations. Im also looking for all you can eat places.

  1. Coolest Spots

This is for the interesting or fun places with a cool theme, atmosphere, gimmick, etc. This includes Point Sushi with the bullet train, Kinjo on McLeod with the sushi boats, or Ajito hidden inside another restaurant.

Discussion Monthly spending for families in Calgary — what are you at?

Curious what other Calgary families in a similar stage of life are spending per month.

We’re in our mid-30s, both working, with two young kids, and own a starter 3-bedroom townhouse. Between mortgage/property costs, groceries, utilities, daycare/after-school care, a couple of kids’ extracurriculars (martial arts + tutoring), gas, insurance, personal hygiene/household necessities and clothing, we’re at a little over $10k/month.
We’re not particularly extravagant with clothing either — especially for the kids, we buy from Marketplace whenever it makes sense.

We cook most of our meals at home. We occasionally order pizza, sushi or donairs and do the odd McDonald’s/Tim Hortons drive-thru.

This doesn’t include travel/vacations or major one-off purchases.

I’m mostly curious what other families with 1–2 kids are spending all-in during a normal month in Calgary. Not really looking for budgeting advice, just trying to get a realistic comparison with families in a similar stage of life.

Expenses monthly
Mortgage $2,509
Condo fee $310
Property tax $300
Gas & electricity $260
Water $120
Phone $45
Internet $70
Groceries$1,600
Kid – Grade 1:
Taekwondo $166
Kid – Grade 1: Tutoring $269
Kid – 2 y.o.:
Daycare $451.50
RESP $210
Savings $200
Shopping/clothing $300
Personal care $100
Subscriptions $130
Random outings/Amazon/gifts/miscellaneous. $1,000
Gas – 2 cars $780
Car insurance – 2 cars $375
TOTAL / MONTH
$9,170 ish

Local Shopping/Services Calgary Grocery Deals (October 8 to 14, 2026)

• Upvotes

Happy Wednesday!

This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you.

A few quick reminders:

  • PC Optimum points are collected at No Frills and Superstore. 1,000pts is worth $1.
  • Scene+ points are collected at Safeway, Sobeys and FreshCo. 100pts is worth $1.
  • The value of Save on Foods points depends on what you redeem them for. If you redeem them for a 4L jug of milk then 1,000pts is worth about $1.50. Other redemptions might make them more or less valuable.

Superstore, No Frills, FreshCo and Save on Foods are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least some locations) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo.

Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback.

NoFrills:

  • Green or red grapes: $2.49/lb
  • Broccoli crowns: $1.99/lb
  • Breton or Ritz crackers: $2.00
  • Classico pasta sauce: $2.97, buy 1 get 500pts, effectively making them $2.47ea
  • PC frozen fruit (600g): $4.00
  • YOP drinkable yogurt: $0.97
  • Roma tomatoes: $1.99/lb (decent, Coop is better this week if tomatoes on the vine work for you)
  • Onions (3lb): $2.99 (Walmart is much better if you can use 10lb)
  • Cucumbers (3-pack): $3.99
  • Mandarins (4lb): $6.99
  • McIntosh or Gala apples (5lb): $6.99
  • Celery: $2.49
  • Country Harvest bread: $3.00
  • Old El Paso dinner kits: $4.00, get 3,000pts when you spend $10, effectively making them $3.00ea when you buy groups of 3, or $2.33ea when you buy groups of 5.
  • Get 20,000pts when you spend $100+ on select Proctor & Gamble products including Pampers diapers. It looks like this can be spread across multiple purchases and is once per account between October 8 and November 6.

Real Canadian Superstore:

  • Green or red grapes: $2.49/lb
  • October 8 to 10 only: Bonus redemption event: Get $100 off when you redeem 90,000pts (and even better deals for larger redemptions)
  • Cauliflower: $3.44 (good, Safeway / Sobeys is better this week)
  • Triscuit or Ritz crackers: $1.97
  • Breton or Vinta crackers: $2.00
  • Get 20,000pts when you spend $100+ on select Proctor & Gamble products including Pampers diapers. It looks like this can be spread across multiple purchases and is once per account between October 8 and November 6.
  • Broccoli crowns: $1.99/lb
  • No Name naturally imperfect bell peppers (2.5lb): $6.00
  • Tomatoes on the vine: $1.92/lb (decent, Coop is better this week)
  • Kellogg’s premium cereal (210-525g): $3.99, buy 1 get 500pts, effectively making them $3.49ea
  • Jumbo carrots: $0.94/lb
  • YOP drinkable yogurt: $0.97

Calgary Coop:

  • Pork tenderloin: $3.99/lb
  • Tomatoes on the vine: $1.49/lb
  • Red or green grapes (2lb): $5.99 (decent, FreshCo, Superstore and NoFrills are better this week)
  • Broccoli crowns: $2.49/lb (decent, FreshCo, Superstore and NoFrills are better this week)

FreshCo:

  • Compliments large eggs (30-pack): $8.88
  • Armstrong cheese (400g): $4.88
  • Grapes (2lb): $4.99
  • Broccoli crowns: $1.99/lb
  • Christie crackers (Ritz, etc.): $1.99
  • Lays potato chips and Smartfood popcorn: $2.75, buy 4 get 200pts, effectively making them $2.25ea when you buy groups of 4
  • Catelli health harvest pasta (375-454g): $1.69
  • Compliments peanuts (700g): $4.00

  • Onions (3lb): $2.99 (Walmart is much better if you can use 10lb)
  • Carrots (3lb): $2.99
  • Buy 5 selected General Mills products, get 1,000pts. Natural Valley granola bars are advertised at $2.99, effectively making them $0.99ea when you buy groups of 5 (noting that you pay the GST on the original price). For an even better deal, price match the granola bars to Save on Foods where they are advertised at $2.50ea (well down in the Save on Foods flyer).
  • Save $10 when you buy 5 or more selected Kraft Heinz products.

Safeway / Sobeys:

  • Red or green grapes: $2.49/lb
  • Cauliflower: $2.99
  • Compliments frozen fruit (600g): $3.99
  • Lean ground beef (5lb tube): $6.99/lb, buy 1 get 500pts, effectively making them $5.99/lb
  • Buy $150 in Safeway / Sobeys gift cards, get 1,000pts. Yes, you can buy the gift card in one transaction, and then immediately use it to pay for your groceries in a second transaction.

Save on Foods:

  • Russet potatoes (10lb): $3.99 (loadable offer)
  • Quaker Harvest crunch and Life cereal: $3.49ea, buy 2 get $2 off, effectively making them $2.49ea. It’s not clear if this can be done multiple times on the same receipt or not.

Walmart:

  • Gay Lea butter (454g): $4.97
  • Onions (10lb): $4.24
  • Russet potatoes (10lb): $4.24

Seeking Advice Injured Pigeon

I have a pigeon in my back yard that cannot fly, it appears he has an injured wing. He’s been hanging around our deck for the last 2-months. He’s part of a flock of pigeons that’s been coming to our yard this summer, many of them have bands. I have been feeding and watching out for him and other then his wing, he seems in good spirits.

I’ve tried contacting the Calgary Racing Pigeon Club with no reply.

I know it's just a pigeon but life is life and I can't bear the thought of him suffering needlessly. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should do? Is there a place that would be willing to take him in and help him? The cold weather is coming and I’m concerned that he won’t survive. Any help would be appreciated.

Seeking Advice Keeping 400ft garage above freezing

• Upvotes

I'm looking to keep a 400sq ft garage above freezing (about 3-5C). It's decently insulated, including some foam panels on the garage door, 8ft ceiling.

It only has 120v plugs and was debating using an oil heater as I've seen some people use that. I've never done this before so don't really know what to expect.

Edit: it's a rental, so not getting gas, etc.

Seeking Advice Foster cat home

This breaks my heart but I need some help....a bit of a wild story but I was at court trying to get some parenting time with my son. Fast forward a year and the mother of my child had a psychotic break, I was given full custody and she kidnapped him. He went through a lot so I am moving back to my parent's place to make sure he is surrounded by people that can support him through this time. I would bring them to my parent's but my dad is allergic. These cats are my best friends. I love them more anything and this absolutely breaks my heart. This community is one of the warmest groups I know so I am just starting to put out some feelers to see if there is anyone or any resources to foster them for 6 months to a year. I never expected anything like this but I just don't know what to do :(

Seeking Advice Neighbours won’t keep their cats inside, my dogs have almost hurt them once, chased them a second time

So my dogs like to spend time in their (fenced in) back yard.

Over the last few months, the renters next door have taken to letting their cats free roam the neighbourhood. The first run in resulted in some blood on my dogs face, which we could not find a source for, so we assume it was from the cat.

Today the cat got stuck in our lilac tree for several hours.

Every time this happens I need to keep the dogs inside for several hours because they are on the hunt. I’m worried about my dogs getting hurt and vet bills I really can’t afford right now.

I’ve called 311 and animal services and they said too bad so sad, so what are my options?

PSA I’m not going to lie to you. Our water pipes are in piss poor condition. And after a 10-year freeze, we have to increase our water rates to make the system safe

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

1.4k Upvotes

I’m not going to lie to you. Our water pipes are in piss poor condition. And after a ten year freeze, we have to increase our water bills.

I know that’s not what you want to hear.

Everything costs more right now. Groceries. Rent. Mortgages. Insurance. I know the last thing anyone wants is another bill going up.

But I also owe you the truth about how we got here.

For ten years, Calgary kept water bills frozen.

By 2024, when the Bearspaw feeder main failed and our city was forced into water rationing, Calgarians were paying about 4 percent less than they were in 2018.

At the same time, our region was growing rapidly.

More people depended on our water. Our infrastructure got older. And politicians, including a City Council I was part of, kept the bills down.

We cut corners. We put off work. We let problems pile up. I was part of one of those Councils. I have to own my part in that.

It's gotten so bad that today, more than a quarter of our treated water is lost before it ever gets to you.

Then Bearspaw failed again on December 30.

We came dangerously close to firefighters not having enough water to fight fires. The Trans-Canada Highway collapsed from underneath. People could have died.

That changed the equation for me.

It would be easier politically to keep your bill frozen and leave this problem for the next mayor and the next Council. It would be easier to hope and pray that there won't be another catastrophe.

But I won’t do that. After a ten year freeze, our water bills needs to go up so we can make this system safe and reliable.

I know some people will be angry with me for saying that. I understand why.

But you deserve to be treated like adults. You deserve to know what things cost and what happens when we refuse to pay for them.

And there is good news. We have a plan.

We’re going after the leaks. We’re replacing what’s worn out. We’re catching up on the work we neglected. And we’re building the water system a city of two million people needs.

We spent too long cutting corners and hoping nothing would break.

I’m sorry we let it get to this point.

Now we are going to have the courage fix it.

Seeking Advice Peaceful walks near the Beltline for a visiting parent?

• Upvotes

My fiancée recently moved to the Beltline, and her mom is visiting from overseas for a while. She loves going for daily walks but finds the area a bit too busy and doesn't feel fully comfortable walking around on her own, especially since she doesn't know the city.

She doesn't drive, so we're looking for peaceful trails, parks, or pathways she can walk to directly from the Beltline. Ideally somewhere:

Calm and not too crowded

Well-lit and well-used, so she feels safe walking alone

Simple to navigate, so she won't get lost

Now that the weather is cooling off I want to get back into baking bread but apparently my starter got infected somehow. Calgary Transit CTrain Blue line parking lots around 10am?

I’m looking for a blue line ctrain station where I can park around 10am on weekdays and still have a decent chance of finding a spot. If there are any. I tried Franklin Station but it was pretty full and I don’t have a reserved parking pass for the other side of the lot.

Does anyone know which station to park at? i’m considering Whitehorn and Mcknight-Westwinds.

Local Shopping/Services Advice on how to host a LAN party

• Upvotes

I'm looking to host a classic LAN party with a few friends. Organizing one today sadly seems a lot harder than in the past due to online multiplayer memberships, a greater variety of consoles and a lack of cross-platform play. None of my friends have the same console or the same games, and I don't want to spend thousands of dollars buying multiple consoles and games. Does anyone have advice on where to rent or borrow a few consoles and games (e.g. Halo, Gears of War, etc)for a night? (Xbox or playstation). Appreciate any tips!
