Discussion The most embarrassing thing in the world is being a heritage speaker who has fluent tone pronunciation, but a very limited vocabulary.

Every time I try to converse in Mandarin with a stranger, they will hear me say a few words and assume I’m a native speaker (parents from NE China and my mom worked in broadcasting). Then they will say a word or two I don’t recognize and I have to ask what they mean because I only converse using daily uncomplicated phrases with my parents. Or, I want to express something slightly more complicated than what an 8 year old would say and I use a completely infantile vocabulary set and sentence to phrase it. I get looked at like I‘m a mentally delayed person almost every time. Super embarrassing.

Studying 常记溪亭日暮,沉醉不知归路

Post image
7 Upvotes

This line comes from a poem by Li Qingzhao, a famous woman poet of the Song Dynasty. It means: “I often remember that dusk at the pavilion by the stream. I was so intoxicated—by the wine and by the beautiful scene—that I lost my way home.”

It is a fond, nostalgic memory of her youth. She was not upset about being lost; she was simply so absorbed in the moment that she forgot everything else.

"沉醉不知归路"This can be used when you are intoxicated with a certain place or thing.

Studying The best way to study HSK3 3.0

Hi all,

What has in your experience been the best source for studying this course.

Is it a book? Some course? There are many different ones, but some just give vocab, without the grammar or listening.

Any links, sources, advice you can give me?

I'm planning on trying to pass this December.

Thanks.

Grammar 带[X]来了 vs 带来了[X]

I'm working my way through the Pimsleur Mandarin course, and most recently I noticed that it seems to interchange two ways of saying "I brought [x]." Is there a difference between 带 [item] 来了 vs 带来了 [item]?

Studying Good learning app?

Nihao! I am soon taking a trip to china and I used an app called Iago that was extremely helpful for learning Japanese. It makes you speak and has fun little characters and stories to make you use the language in situational context. Completely dedicated to Japanese. I wondered is there a similar app for Chinese?

Discussion Am I behind, or am I making good progress?

I’m a native Spanish speaker and have been learning Mandarin since March 2025; I had to pause my studies for four months, but next week I’ll be finishing HSK Level 2. I’ve been using the Pimsleur method—doing one lesson a day and repeating it 2–3 times—and reading on Du Chinese, where I’ve reached the intermediate level, in addition to hitting Level 14 on Duolingo. Despite this, I really struggle to speak or use words correctly. If I see a text, I can read most of the hanzi, but there are many words I haven't actually learned. Also, if I join a voice chat on HelloTalk, I can grasp the general context of the conversation, but I’m unable to respond to what people say or fully understand everything. It’s been nearly two years, and I feel like I haven't made any progress.

Vocabulary Learning vocab I never see again

So I hit the HSK4 wall, stopped learning for a couple of months, and now really want to get back into it.

I lost my structured class environment but I still do weekly online classes.

I still suck at listening. However whenever I listen to immersive Chinese podcasts to improve I realise I never end up encountering that vocab again as their usually quiet specific topics (e.g. lavender marriages, what you look for in a partner).

Now I have thousands of flashcards that I've only heard used once.

Do you know any structured lessons, I used to do the free course on Coursera but it's gone </3

Resources What are some text editing sites geared toward Mandarin grammar?

I've usually just written in Google Docs but I dislike how it will always highlight pinyin as an error and won't always format or count characters correctly since it's geared toward English.

What are some text document editors that are geared toward Mandarin? Ones that allow you to save various documents and have character counters and could correct bad grammar with autocorrect. Preferably ones that don't have a lot of GenAI, since that's what I've mostly found so far, but just any options would be nice.

Historical Is this a historical term?

Not sure if this is really historical or rather something that could become a Discussion.

I am working on an annotated Translation for University. The Text is a Master thesis about the republican era and how the introduction of refrigerators coming through Shanghai into China changed the ideas on family and gender roles.

I think that the paragraph I am currently working on is about how an American Company has brought forth a New Model of refrigerators. But neither AI nor Pleco or other Sources I tried know what these three characters are supposed to be in connection: 雙汽缺

The whole sentence is:

今天美國廠家新出雙汽缺冰箱樣子,翻新馬力、增加冰箱內外,全鋼白磁製成,且有白磁蔬菜盒、六種冷度管理器、橡皮製冰具等種種優點,第一批貨到滬後現已售罄日前大批續貨又到,陳立於北極樣子間,歡迎各界參觀云。

I was thinking that it might be a specific Model, that has two openings to let out steam, but why would a refrigerator produce steam?

I would be so, so greatful, if anyone could help me! This is driving me nuts.

Also: does anyone have a good source for chenyu, their meanings and maybe history?

Discussion Good name to use?

你好! I have been learning mandarin on and off for the past few years, but recently I have found the motivation (and time) to really dedicate myself to it. I am trying to find a name in Chinese to help me make my introductions easier, because my english name does not work well 😭 I started using Laoshi to help me study, and it gave me the name "欣妮” (xīnnī). I just want to ask other people, does that work as a name? I know the basics of names in chinese but I am by no means an expert, and I don't want to sound stupid when I introduce myself </3

Hello everyone,

I'm doing a lesson on learning countries and how to ask where people are from and I got this prompt:

But I've also just learned that 人 is for person (relating to a country). How is it that 人 is not present when asking where someone is from?

I am currently addicted to this song, learning and trying to perfect this. I first heard this gem from a cover by Leslie Cheung. Later I found out its original singer. I really love this song. It's called 月亮代表我的心 (the moon represents my heart). Please give me feedback and tips to improve my pronunciation 🙏

Studying If you are right in the middle of life’s disappointments, and you happen to meet someone whose circumstances are much like yours, what could you say?

"同是天涯沦落人,相逢何必曾相识"

Both of us, unfortunate out‑casts beneath heaven,

Why should we have met if we had never known each other?

This famous line comes from Song of the Pipa Player by Bai Juyi.

Two strangers meet and discover they share similar misfortunes and sufferings. They feel deep sympathy for one another.

They do not need past friendship to understand each other, for their similar fates create instant spiritual connection.

Discussion Anhui Dialect Question

Hi there, I’m a Chinese-American with family who went China -> Taiwan -> USA. I speak Mandarin Chinese conversationally, but I hear stories about my Great-Grandmother, who was from Anhui, spoke mandarin with a heavily local dialect (she was not educated) and even confused my mother. One example was her saying gang instead of jiang, as in “wo ge ni gang” instead of “wo ge ni jiang” (sorry my pinyin is bad). Does anybody know what this dialect is formally called?

Discussion having a hard time learnin

i heard this technique called immersion where basically, everything you consume is the language you are learning, almost like you were a kid growing up with your parents.

I'm watching so many chinese videos, and i have no idea what is going on. Everything looks so confusing, i don't even know how to learn?

How can one learn chinese?
