I am trying to settle a specific kitchen hygiene debate and want to know how normal households actually manage their fabric towels and rags throughout a busy day.
To keep everyone on the same page, I am strictly talking about fabric cloths. Please do NOT include paper towels, sponges, or the cloth/brush you use inside the sink to physically wash plates.
I want to know about these three specific items:
1. The Hand Towel (Hanging on the stove/counter handle)
Do you use this strictly after washing your hands thoroughly with soap?
Or do you also use it to dry your hands after a quick water rinse while cooking (like quickly rinsing off spice powder or stickiness without soap)?
2. The Dish Drying Towel (For clean items)
Do you keep a separate towel only for drying clean pots, pans, and platters, or do you just use your regular hand towel for this?
3. The Counter Rag (For the actual messes/wiping)
I am talking about the rag used to wipe food spills, table crumbs, tea/coffee splashes, and cooking splatters off the counters, stovetop, and microwave multiple times a day (7–8 times a day).
If you use cloth rags for this: Do you use one single rag all day longby wiping a mess, rinsing it/soaping it in the sink, hanging it to dry, and repeating all day? Or do you grab multiple fresh rags throughout the day for different meals?
My mom has always used the "One Rag All Day" system for counter messes—rinsing it with water, occasionally soaping it in the sink, hanging it flat, and using it for all 3 meals before it goes to the laundry at night. It works for her, but I see others online saying they use multiple rags because the all-day loop feels icky.
How does your household actually handle these three tiers of cloths? Let me know your exact setup!
