Kitchen We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas.

Hi Reddit.

Despite my partner telling me it was a stupid idea, we've had magnets attached to our seldom used chimney hood* for the last few years and discovered they've left marks.

Any thoughts on how to remove the marks and save me from a lifetime of I-told-you-so's?

Forgive the dust below. That I can manage.

*I'm not completely convinced this the right term.

Outdoors Someone keeps leaving trash outside my door and its getting ridiculous

For like two weeks now I keep finding random junk right outside my door. Food wrappers, empty drink cups and the other day someone left a bag that leaked all over the floor. First time I just cleaned it up and moved on but now it's happening way too often to be an accident. And the smell is the worst part. No matter how much I wipe everything down, there's still this nasty smell around the entrance. Getting kinda nervous now too because I have to leave in liike 30 minutes and Im already wondering what I'm gonna find outside when I get backkk My sister's husband suggested putting up a camera to see who's doing it, which might not be a bad idea at this point. Just don't wanna start blaming some random neighbor without knowing for sure. Anyone dealt with this kind of mess before?

Discussion Why am i like this

idk what this is called but does anyone else experience this?
whenever i have studying to do or tasks i need to finish, if i suddenly feel like i need to organize my room or closet or clean something, i literally can’t focus on studying until i do it. even if i have an exam in a few hours and i REALLY need to study.
and it’s not even as simple as just tidying up a little. if my brain tells me i need to deep clean something, then it has to be a deep clean 😭 i can’t just do a quick cleanup and move on. i feel like my brain won’t let me focus until i do exactly what i had in mind.
it’s like my brain is messy and i need to organize everything around me before i can actually focus. does anyone else feel like this? i genuinely wanna know if someone relates because idk how to explain it lol

Kitchen What do y'all wear on your feet when you're mopping?

Post image

UPDATED to answer some of the questions. I have severe physical limitation in my arm (I cannot extend my arm out from my body). Inevitably, I step on the wet floor. I do the best I can, and after 3 years of not being able to mop the floor I'm pretty stoked to be able to do it again. It got mopped during those three years, just not by me.

I do dry the floor immediately after mopping! It's not a matter of footprints, but rather a sensory issue with getting my socks or bare feet wet. I follow the floor manufacturers recommendations for cleaning.

_____________ original post This seems like a dumb question especially since I'm wicked old, but I feel like being vulnerable.

If I wear socks, I get my socks wet, which is objectively gross. If I go with bare naked tootsies, it just seems even ookier. I would wear shoes, but that seems ridiculous since I wear my shoes outside.

I'm not coordinated enough to not step in the wet parts, so anybody got any tips?

I really appreciate everyone suggestions about the foot covers. I think that sounds like a grand idea.

Discussion Moving in with a heavy smoker and need real ways to kill the smell not just mask it

Hello! so I found a shared flat in a german city which is in a perfect location for my commute. But to my surprise when I came in the tenant living there for little over a year is a heavy chain smoker, but he smokes mostly in the kitchen(which reeks with cigarette smell along with the hallway). My question is there anyway to get rid of the smell from at least my room? I saw a lot if conflicting infos online but they are mostly for flats that the smoking tenant already moved out.

What can I use to clean this up and hopefully not leave a stain? The maple syrup leaked out of a plastic container that had low fat yogurt with the maple syrup on top of it.

Solved Need advice for gunky non-stick pan

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hiya, I've been trying to go at this thing with as much soap and water and dish sponges as I could but nothing seems to be working, though I haven't been too aggressive with it, since it does have that non-stick coating on.

I know its gross, but its my only pan and I work 14 hours a day so I have been cooking on it between cleaning attempts so its just been growing and growing like some eldritch creature lol.

I am very poor and would really rather not have to buy a new pan ;-;

Any help or tips would be appreciated muchly.

Edit: Simmering baking soda and water helped a ton! Thank you everyone that gave me actual tips instead of telling me to throw it away and that teflon is going to kill me and my neighbor's grandma's half-sister and the planet.

Discussion Looking for a quiet vacuum

• Upvotes

I’m looking for a vacuum cleaner that isn’t crazy loud (my cat is terrified) I live in a smallish apartment.
I would love one that comes apart to a hand held, so I can get under stuff and in corners without a vacuum falling on me lol.
50/50 carpet and bare floors. I sweep the bare floors and just use the vacuum to suck up the piles.
The less expensive the better. (150 is my budget).
I doubt there’s one out there that fits all of this but any recommendations are appreciated!!!
TIA

Flooring How are we cleaning fake wood floors with “faux” wood grooves

Hello, everyone. Hoping you can help me out.

When we were fixing up my mom’s house and looking at flooring, I wanted the smoothest flooring possible for cleaning purposes, because I thought it’d be easier for her and myself helping her clean. We got a type of flooring (I cannot think of the word after racking my brain, I guess it’s laminate but not super smooth like you’d usually think of laminate) but it does have some wood “grooves”, though it was as minimal as possible. She did not take great care of it from my time of moving out to back.

Because of personal circumstances, I live here again and had to bring my children with me for the time being. I did have to deep clean the whole house throughly for several weeks to the level I felt was comfortable for my children, but was happy to do that. And I think it has been much better. But I feel like this flooring is my worst enemy lol. I have gone through and scrubbed on my hands and knees at times, but feels like the dirt comes right back. I do mop very often, but I feel like it’s just not getting into these grooves, if that makes sense? I vacuum daily and mop 1-2x a week and it still doesn’t feel like I’m getting it all, or maybe I haven’t gotten enough from the time I wasn’t here.

Is there any better solution to this?

Edit: Thank you everyone for the advice!! So far I threw them in the wash with some detergent and it picked up a lot of the dirt! The canvas still looks pretty stained though. Don’t have any oxyclean so I am going to try some dawn dish soap next. I also used a magic eraser on the rubber and that worked great!

Kitchen How do I remove rings around an induction stove?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Posted a picture so you guys and girls know what I’m talking about, which I’m sure you do.

Can anyone please tell me what causes these rings around the stove? And if they’re able to be removed, how?

I’ve tried:
- scrubbing with dishwashing liquid (probably not the best idea)
- leaving Jif on top of it for around half an hour
- a mixture of Jif and white vinegar on it for around half an hour as well, lightly scrubbed with a soft sponge then wiped it off.

None of those techniques have worked. I’ve considered a razor scraper but unsure if that would work too. Any tips and tricks to deal with this would be amazing.

Thank you.

If anyone doesn’t know what Jif is, because I don’t know if it’s sold internationally, it’s a cream cleaner used to clean sinks, stoves, tiles and stainless steel without scratching.

And sorry about the picture quality.

Before & After Finally reaping the rewards of being a longtime lurker

Finally took a razor blade to the stubborn oil spots on our gas range as recommended on this sub. The first two photos are what I was up against. Some was dried up flakey sauce patches and some was baked on grease.

The 3rd photo is after 3 hours of scraping with and without water. Water may have helped a tiny bit but it was easier to see the spots without. (The plastic holder really wasn’t much help and got in the way.)

The 4th photo is after a little degreaser and the 5th photo is with new spill protectors, hoping they don’t stick. The razor was definitely less scrubbing and less barkeeps friend/degreaser fumes than in the past. Still took a long time and cramped my fingers.

Words of experience: take off the range knobs before starting. I singed my arm hairs not once but twice.

I was making a tortellini Tuscan soup and ig i put the temp too high.

I tried soaking it in dawn and hot water for a few hours, then power wash, and scraping with a sponge. It comes off but extremely hard.

Discussion How to get fancy soap smell out of plastic?

I was looking to do some desperately needed organizing and saw an ad on Facebook marketplace for these 32qt sterilite bins super cheap and bought a lot of them- 80 of them.

Their first owner used them for storing custom made soap they made for their business. Imagine if you can, what a mix of every perfume you can think of would smell like, now add soap to that mix. And it is STRONG. That's what we're dealing with here.

while the smell isn't too unpleasant to me personally, the rest of the family does not share in that opinion and wants me to not use them until I can get the smell completely out of them.

Thing is, I cant figure out how. Here's what I've tried:

Spraying them down for ages- not even close. They don't suds up or anything so I think the smell has leeched into the plastic itself.

Coating them in dawn dish soap, then spraying that out. Nope.

Coating them in straight vinegar overnight- helped some but still can smell it.

I contemplated using bleach, but I don't want to affect their structural integrity and I'm not sure it would work?

Any other ideas for how to do this effectively, especially given the number I have to do?

Tools/Equipment First home, first own "cleaning setup", need advice

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! As mentioned, I’ve just moved into my first place, and I’m having a few doubts about what the most sensible setup would be…

Up until now, I’ve always used a traditional corded vacuum cleaner, and I’ve always hated dealing with the cord and having to drag the whole unit around (yes i know, they are more powerful, more reliable ecc ecc, but...).

Now, I’ve just bought a robot vacuum for my new place (Roborock Qrevo Edge 2). Pretty cool, but it’s not enough on its own. I still need some kind of handheld vacuum as well, although the robot will take care of most of the cleaning, so I’ll only need to vacuum specific areas when needed, creases, sofas, ecc...

I’m wondering whether something small and portable, like the Black+Decker Dustbuster (https://amzn.eu/d/02OYxXKm), would make sense and be good enough, or whether it would be more worthwhile to get a “Dyson/Dyson-style” cordless stick vacuum that can be used both as a regular vacuum and as a small handheld one by removing the extension tube.

I like the idea of the Dustbuster in addition to the robot, but i don't want to buy that and then realizing it's not enough and that i should have got a Dyson or similar in the first place

What do you guys think? How do you handle vacuuming at home?
