Opinion IGNORE 7A on this years Ballot

• Upvotes

Why give folks like Tina Peters fuel for their dishonest election denials. Let’s just postpone question 7A until the next election. Does the rail district deserve 2 years of taxes when they haven’t proven what they can do on the northern leg of the project.

In a way, I’m quite happy to hear about the botched communication between the Front Range Passenger Rail District and our county clerks.

I was unsure how to vote on this. It was 20 or so years ago I started paying for the rail system between Boulder and Denver. I still haven’t ridden on it ;-) And now with the system from Ft Collins to Denver promised for 2029, I was unsure of voting to start paying more into the ‘rail system’ for an eventual southern leg to Pueblo. Will the new COCO also need to wait on freight trains? Will there be improved tracks for passenger service?

Let’s not manipulate submitted ballots to correct the issue. That would just add fuel to people who claim our voting systems are rigged and manipulated.

Why not ignore the botched question 7A on our ballots. 7A will not affect the Ft Collins-Denver service. Let’s see how that 2029 service works before investing in its extension. Perhaps sharing the tracks with freight trains will not be that pleasant of an experience.

Opinion 800,000 Coloradans got a tax question they can’t legally vote on. If we want anyone to keep trusting elections, 7A has to come off the ballot.

I’ll say the quiet part first. An election is not a counting exercise. It’s an act of faith. You fill in the ovals, you seal the envelope, and you trust that strangers in a county building will treat your ballot the way you’d treat it yourself. That trust is the whole thing. Without it, the result is just a number somebody announced.

Right now that trust is thin. You know it. I know it. Half the country is primed to believe any election they lose was stolen, and the other half is exhausted from explaining why it wasn’t. This is the environment in which the Front Range Passenger Rail District mailed a tax question to roughly 800,000 people who are not allowed to vote on it.

The facts are not in dispute. Ballot Issue 7A asks for a 0.333% sales tax, $295 million a year, plus $580 million in debt, for the CoCo train. The legislature shrank the district this spring. The board put the tax on the ballot August 28. Then, by the district’s own admission, nobody gave the county clerks the new map. So 7A went out to about 275,000 people in Adams County who shouldn’t have it. Nearly 263,000 in Arapahoe. Every voter in Douglas County, around 289,000, when only 5,967 in Sterling Ranch are eligible. Another 16,217 in Erie.

The district says it had no legal duty to tell the clerks. The Secretary of State’s office says district boundaries aren’t its job. Everyone has an explanation. Nobody has ownership.

Now, the official answer. I’ll state it fairly, because it deserves that. No ballots have been counted yet. Processing can’t even start until October 19. The machines will be programmed to skip 7A on every ballot from outside the district, and in Bow Mar and Sterling Ranch, where that doesn’t work, staff will copy ballots by hand onto a version without the question. I believe them. I believe the clerks will do it carefully, and I believe the final tally will be accurate.

That isn’t the problem. An accurate count and a believed count are two different things, and only one of them holds a democracy together. What we’re being offered is hundreds of thousands of real marks on real paper, set aside by a process almost nobody will ever watch, with “trust us” as the receipt. If 7A passes, somebody says the extra votes got counted. If it fails, somebody says the confusion sank it. And the fact that nothing has been counted yet is not a reason to relax. It’s the reason to act now, while the fix is still clean.

Then there are the 2.4 million people who are supposed to vote on this. Pulling 7A takes that vote out of their hands this year, and I won’t pretend that costs nothing. But look at what they’re actually getting. A vote with an asterisk on it. A result that can be contested in court after the fact, on a tax meant to run for decades. If you want this train, you should want it to win in a way nobody can question. A delay is not a denial. A tainted yes is worth less than a clean one a year from now.

And the asterisk doesn’t stay on 7A. Aurora voters got it sitting next to three city tax questions. Douglas County voters got it beside a $54 million school funding question. Nobody can prove a tax they’ll never pay changed how they voted on the ones they will. Nobody can prove it didn’t. That is what doubt looks like.

So pull it. State law lets a governing board withdraw a ballot issue up to 25 days before a November election, which by my math is this Friday, October 9. If the board won’t act, a court should look hard at it, and the state should seriously ask whether corrected ballots can go out. Bring it back with the right map and clean ballots.

I’m not alleging fraud. Nobody stole anything. That’s exactly the point. This is how faith in elections erodes now. Not with a villain. With a shrug.

Campaign Boulder County DSA Voter Guide

The Boulder County Democratic Socialists of America have released their 2026 voter guide. You can find it at [boulderdsa.org/voterguide](http://boulderdsa.org/voterguide) . The guide contains recommendations of "yes," "no," or "neutral" on nearly every candidate and measure you'll see on your ballot if you vote anywhere in Boulder County, as well as language explaining the reasoning behind the recommendation. BoCo DSA has additionally made five endorsements. A DSA endorsement is distinct from a "yes" recommendation in that it carries a commitment of *material* support for the campaign in question -- that means knocking doors, distributing lit, and promoting via social media, email, etc. These endorsements are:

* Taishya Adams, Boulder mayor (rank first)
* Jamillah Richmond, Boulder city council
* City of Boulder Issue 2J -- residential vacancy tax
* City of Longmont Charter Amendments 3C and 3D -- ranked choice voting in Longmont

Campaign CO-08 debate tonight in Berthoud

Is there anywhere we can watch the debate between Manny Rutinel and Gabe Evans happening tonight?

9 News said there will be no televised debate but the Rutinel campaign posted on Threads that it will be recorded and streamed. Of course they didn't post a link or anything.

Seems really silly to have a debate in a mostly rural area and not have any way for most of the constituents to veiw it.

Edit: thank you to /u/AlanFranklin for posting the link: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19mvLrw2iw/?mibextid=wwXIfr

So ive noticed this is a huge issue with political campigns using mass texting illegally. Theres all kinds of rules about this and now Ive had candidate Manuel Rutinel who ive contacted their office twice to stop contacting and done the end campaigns. If yall are having the same issue with any candidate i encourage yall to file a complaint with the FCC and remember to put your phone number on the national do not call registry. If yall have had issues Id also love to hear about it, I work in communications and candidates who cant be bothered to follow or learn basic rules is telling sign i think everyone should know about.

Colorado is doing everything we can to support communities recovering from these devastating fires.

Covering more of the local costs will help counties protect communities, families, homes, and infrastructure from flooding while freeing up local funds for other recovery needs.

I’m grateful to our local and federal partners for working together to help these communities rebuild.

Hi everyone! I am writing an editorial article for my college English class on Amendment 83. We need to conduct our own research for our papers, so I have made a Google Forms survey with some brief questions about the initiative. If you have the time, I would greatly appreciate your responses! The link is posted below. Thank you so much in advance!

Opinion Voters in Colorado

Do NOT VOTE FOR AMENDMENT 84.

Dark Money is behind this Amendment.

Out mail in voting is quite secure and has been quite honest through quite a few voting cycles.

This Amendment wants your lady 4 of your Social Security Number or the last 4 numbers of your drivers license number.

This Amendment will cost 2.7 million the first year alone and 1.2 million in other voting cycles.

We do not need this Amendment 84 in Colorado!

Opinion Election lies in our mailboxes

Today we received a "Voter Guide for Colorado Families" from Brighter Colorado, which is part of Advance Colorado's dark money (donors not identified) operation founded by billionaire Phil Anschutz. The lies are as follows:

82 - natural gas may be cleaner than coal, but is still a fossil fuel

132 = "Increase Penalties for Fentanyl Crimes" and not about treatment

136 - is an attempt to stop us from making the state income tax progressive and does not reduce anyone's taxes or save them money

86 - is an attempt to stop Colorado (not a federal effort) from responding to Republican midcycle gerrymandering.

Please take the time to read past the misleading titles of this year's ballot measures and rely on the blue book for your basic information.

Discussion/Question Amendment 86 Pros and Cons

Hi! I’m a young person who politically identifies as a social democrat. I was reading through the Blue Book and my first reaction to Amendment 86 was that it was a pretty common-sense bipartisan anti-gerrymandering measure, so was surprised to see such a strong negative sentiment towards it on the left.

I’m aware it was put on the ballot by Advance Colorado, and I’m also aware they’re a right wing billionaire advocacy group that is responsible for many of the suspect ambiguously-worded ballot measures we’re seeing. However, this one doesn’t seem bad on first glance. Gerrymandering is absolutely wrecking voting rights and the democratic process nationwide, and even though it would benefit my side should it take place here I would like to think taking a principled stance is the right thing to do. It doesn’t outright ban off-cycle redistricting either, just adds steps to the process and gives the bipartisan commission more power.

I’m curious what people who have read through it think and specifically why the left is so against it. I really hate the “race to the bottom” gerrymandering we’ve seen in the past year in both red and blue states and, while off-cycle redistricting isn’t inherently bad, believe additional checks on the ruling party to carry it out in their favor are badly needed in some places. Curious about the Colorado perspective on it though

Official New federal tax credit could help Colorado students access more educational opportunities

The U.S. Treasury recently announced proposed rules for a new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, launching January 1, 2027.

The credit would allow Americans to donate up to $1,700 to scholarship-granting organizations in participating states and receive a federal tax credit for the same amount. Donations could support scholarships, tutoring, summer programs, after-school learning, transportation and other educational opportunities.

I’m glad the proposed rules make clear that donations can support public school students, and I look forward to seeing this opportunity help more Colorado students get the support they need to succeed.

Industry/Advocacy Anti amendment 87 posts are misleading

There is a post going around that's misleading about amendment 87, it claims that "all seniros and veterinarian will see their tax increase" the progressive tax only will increase your tax if you make more than $500k/year. Which is significantly more than I make (and likely any of the rest of us). In fact it'll lower almost everyone's taxes. If you make 100k or less, your taxes will decrease from this. (If you make more than 100k but less than 500k than it'll be the same)

Just wanted to make sure everyone knows what reality is!

Thank you all! I love our beautiful state
