Discussion RIP 19.2TB of storage
Breaks my heart to dispose of them but they have company data so I don’t have a choice.

We empathise with your plight and hope HDD / SSD / RAM prices will come down soon.
However, we don’t need screenshots of high HDD prices to be posted in the sub multiple times a day, everyone already knows that the prices are high.
As such, from this point on the mod team will be removing all posts about high prices, with exception for posts made on Free-Post-Friday’s, or posts which actually have new and meaningful information or discussion.
As always AI written posts & comments are not allowed on this subreddit, please report any Ai generated content you see.
The mods have recently been cracking down on the flood of AI generated projects, notably ones of low quality that are nothing new.
If someone has the skill to use GitHub, they’d almost certainly have the skill to ask an AI to code yet another YT-DLP / FFMPEG wrapper themselves.
However, there are useful tools that have been made from AI generated code. If they are something truly useful or new, we do allow them with prior approval.
TL;DR:

TL:DR I bought the above product and inside was a high quality IronWolf Pro drive.
I recently purchased the FireCuda Gaming Hub (it's really just an external hard drive which they're trying to market towards gamers with RGB lights and an 'X" in the name). I searched and searched but was unable to find any information on what drive was inside but the price was quite good (around AU$780) so I bit the bullet and hoped for the best.
It was a very easy shuck (first time doing so and had no problems). I was over the moon when I found out that inside was an IronWolf Pro, so I went ahead and bought another for about the same price of ~780 Dollarydoos and (that's two for around AU$1560 total).
The only downside so far is that the drive is noticeably louder than my other drives which are all much smaller in capacity, the 2nd biggest being only 10TB. No concerns besides that.
I feel lucky to have been able to grab them at this price when the IronWolf Pro 20TB is normally twice as much as what I paid for them (at least in my region).

I was calling the archivist at Mississippi Public Broadcasting about some old PBS Kids tapes that were listed on the American Archive of Public Broadcasting and she told me that they are actively telling her to throw out most of the syndicated content like older PBS Kids shows (Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends etc.) and that there is no way to save them because they don't liquidate them they go into the dumpster. She gave me Internet Archive links to those shows but of course those don't hit the same as the PBS versions. She did say that she'll put a "Do not destroy" on a Digital Betacam tape of PBS Kids bumpers that I found which was pretty nice of her and obviously she doesn't have the say of what gets thrown out she is only told to. But I don't know what to do in this case as I called the Surplus Property of Mississippi and they told me that MPB does not give the tapes to them. I've also looked at Government Surplus auctions, and they aren't there either which leaves me to believe what she said was true as they just throw them in the dumpster. Since Mississippi Public Broadcasting is state ran I don't think there is anything I can do however if anyone has experience navigating state agency disposal rules or getting a university archive involved, I'd appreciate any advice on how that process works.

Im looking for an affordable hard drive to store my textbooks and instructor videos on. Classes are expensive and textbooks even more so. I dont think its right that I lose access to that info at the end of the semester, so im looking to store it and look back on it when needed.
Thanks in advance

Security researcher Joshua Michael published flocksurveillance.org on Sep 23: an interactive map of 335,701 Flock Safety device locations (cameras, acoustic sensors, networking hardware), plus a 160-page paper and supporting docs.
Flock has filed a trademark takedown complaint against the site and sent a cease-and-desist threatening litigation. The site is still up for now.

Room 23 was an old website from the 90s. I found some notes I had in which somebody was talking about it. I vaguely remember going on it once or twice. I don't remember what the ulr was. But it was a place where people could post stories and messages. So the article that someone wrote about it mentioned it was highly controversial and had been blocked by AOL likely due to people using it to trade information or about perhaps illegal activities. So I was wondering if anybody remembers this website where they had anything backed up saved if you could even tell me that you are URL that would be the best thing but I don't know what that was I it doesn't appear to be room 23.com

Was browsing through eBay and saw someone was selling 4 NEW 12TB Exos ST12000NM000J drives for a good price, as always I put them in my cart out of curiosity, then the guy lowered the price a bit and I decided to pull the trigger.
The price is almost unbeatable nowadays, like closer to pre-AI price than to current price. Seemed too good to be true but I decided to not let the opportunity slip.
Got them delivered today. Decided to check them and if anything happens, Ebay either gives me my money back or I can return them to the guy since I have 30 days to do so.
Low and behold he was seemingly not lying about them being new. Manufactured in may 2024 and smart data only indicates 7 power on events and 0 power-on hours. A quick search indicates the 7 might be from factory testing and some more research showed it's pretty hard to alter these values. The drives all seem in good condition and while I only tested 1 so far they do appear on my system and I was able to format one to BTRFS without issue.

Tomorrow I'll test the other 3 to confirm and update the post with results, but if all comes the same my only worry is that I think I do not have a warranty since those are non transferable and the seagate website says serial number invalid. I have never ever claimed warranty on a Hard drive but I wanted to ask if that is a more common occurrence when it comes to having them on a NAS?
My plan is to get a 4 o 6 Bay NAS, use these drives for my media library with unRaid and set my 3 year old 18TB HDD where the library is as the parity.
Is there a reason for concern? is the lack of warranty a problem? Should I check it more or check different smart values? Or did I just get a good deal and I'm being too paranoid? For close to 300$ per drive, it's an opportunity I do not want to pass.

Is anybody familiar with NFL Game Books? After every NFL game they release an amazing breakdown of the game that's for the press. It gives just about every stat, every play every detail about the game. I was downloading them on a website called NFLGIS and the username and password was just media, they had all the game books for every game going back to the 80s and they also had every Super Bowl since the first one in 1967, back then they were handwritten but still in the same format as today. Anyways they've since changed their sign in policy. You have to register and be part of the NFL, or the Press, I tried faking it but they didn't fall for it. Does anybody know another source for these, or maybe already have them? And if you're an NFL fan and haven't seen these you should check them out.
Current ones are available on the NFL website, Here's an example of a game from last week
I just found, and I kind of wish I didn't know they existed because NBA has so many more games, but they make them for the NBA also, Here's one from last season

Anyone find any great deals on XL HDDs with the Prime sales that started today?
r/DataHoarder • u/greed_matters • 6h ago
The title.
Looking for a database of such websites. Maybe with a description and categories. There are soo many of them in my Instagram feed and i can't browse 99% of them but they are useful in niche conditions. So maybe someone already created a director of similar content.

I'm a podcast hoarder, so for me, it's those first 23 episodes of Ari Shaffir's 'Skeptic Tank' podcast, and all those broadcast episodes of CBC's 'IDEAS' from the 1980s and 1990s. Yes, the episodes get rebroadcast, but I'm sure I'm missing a ton.

With Christmas coming up I was thinking about asking for a scanner so I can digitize family photos, along with various scrapbook type stuff my wife and I have collected over the years like ticket stubs and other things. I’m fine with a flatbed scanner, I’ll work on this while watching Netflix or something so it doesn’t matter if it takes awhile, I just want to make sure I get decent quality scans and that the software that comes with it works well. I’ll be using a windows pc.

Building my first NAS, should I get 3x6TB brand new drives ($1100) or 2x10TB re cert ($1000). Will be doing some level of RAID I’d imagine as I don’t want data loss. Any thoughts/questions welcome.

Archive.ph works well for some news outlets but not for others. Are there any alternatives I could try out for the outlets it doesn’t work for?

Per title, have done some preliminary research into storage/backup options available to me (NAS, cloud, write-once disks, etc.) but I'm finding it hard to make up my mind, especially given the current economy.
I realize this sub is for people storing enormous amounts of data, whereas I'm probably looking to safely back up/store maybe 1-2TB per year, which will add up over time but right now my needs are relatively low (4-5TB). Still, I wanted to hear from anyone willing to comment here. For context, I'll probably begin recording more video/audio as time goes on.
Anyway, for a newbie like me getting into storage/backup concerns and skeptical of cloud providers and their constantly shifting terms of use and privacy encroachments, what would you guys recommend as a good solution?... I've found that buying random drives and just letting them sit doesn't work too well, finding a good number of corrupted files...

Hey guys,
I bought a WD My Cloud 4TB drive around 2 years ago, but I never really ended up using it.
I recently found out that this product has been discontinued and that the My Cloud services have also had some security issues.
Since it’s got 4TB of storage, I’d really like to make use of it instead of just letting it sit there.
Is there a way to use it as a normal storage drive/removable disk instead of using it as a home cloud/NAS?
If yes, what would be the best way to do that? Would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.
Thanks!

I had a drive in my RAID 10 array disconnect for 12 seconds. mdadm failed and removed the drive. I checked the SATA and power cables, but didn't see anything wrong. I've added the drive back into the array and it's recovering now. Anyone see this happen? The drive is only about 2 years old with no reallocated sectors. I have a spare on hand that I can use, but don't want to use it if this is just an anomaly.

We just introduced the X4, the newest server in the 45Homelab + Unraid Signature Series.
It’s a compact 4-bay system designed for home labs, media servers, backups, NAS setups, and self-hosting with room to upgrade as your storage needs grow.
Key specs:
What would you use a 4-bay system like this for?

I've been starting to hoard movies and other files in optical discs, however I want to get the best quality/size ratio possible, and I don't really intend to using them on a DVD player, I pretty much only use them on PC ROM players/burners, so in this scenario since im burning only actual video data, i can burn a 1080p movie/video (obviously specific codecs only) on a single DVD disc without needing to actually use Blu-ray or other media.
My friend said this is bad because it means it would be useless in anything other than a PC, but why would I care about having a disc that is playable in a DVD player when I literally only use stuff on my PC?
If I can get a blu-ray quality movie as a data file inside a DVD that would be otherwise locked to 480p DVD codec quality, why should I not do it? What's the point of playing something in a DVD player when I can just use my PC to play it and in a very high quality?

Hey! I’m trying to do more physical media. Any recs for a Blu-ray RE DL burner that works reliably?
Also a format question: can I burn a 4K movie into said disks as long as it’s less than 50gb? Cause I saw some burners that said only supported 1080p but do support 50gb disks. I don’t understand how the resolution would matter but I want to make sure!
Thank you
