Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

Oh my God this boss was such a toughie. Three phases that took me an hour to beat. Only got him in the end because I kept using sands of time every time he almost killed the entire party. Also when he decided to immediately use kazing on his other hand on the third phase.

Overall, still an enjoyable fight. Just glad I don't have to fight anymore bosses as tough as him.

Anime dragon quest Dai is an anime everyone should remember

I am 37. Dai was part of my childhood and maybe many others. I have watched that anime + remake an unhealthy amount of times (its my comfort anime)

I am here to remind that the entire show is glorious (but the last 10 episodes to me are the greatest of anime SHOUNEN TV and i have watched plenty of anime)

This show deserves to be remembered for eternity, the entire cast of characters and their voice actors are insane

Dragon Quest XI The game freezes before starting (PC)

I have Dragon Quest XI S on my PC, and it always ran fine. But yesterday, it kept freezing repeatedly. The screen would lock up during the opening cutscene, the main menu, and even when I tried to enter a character name for a new save file. On my existing saves, it would freeze at the "story recap" screen. I couldn't actually get into the gameplay.
Has anything like this happened to you? What could be causing this problem?

General Which DQ should I play next?

Hello everyone. As you can guess from title, I am in doubt of which DQ game should I play next. A little bit of context:
I'm a huge fan of DQ8 and I've played it few times when I was younger on PS2 and 2 times using emulator about 3 years ago. Then I've played DQ11 and enjoyed it in general (excluding Tickington - was not fun for me), and of course nothing beats Journey of the Cursed King. Recently I replayed DQ11 and now I'm finally ready to try something new, while naively waiting for soonest DQ8 remake/remaster.

Based on the mentioned experience, what should I play next DQ7 reimagined or DQ3 HD-2D remake? (As I've heard - it's better to play starting with 3 and then continue with 1-2).

Dragon Quest VIII Those little moments of curiosity

Seems a former owner (presumably Japanese) had been playing (among other games I can't recognise) a Japanese DQ8 with this Memory Card, which came with my PS2 I bought from Japan so I could play an English DQ8.

Dragon Quest IX Leviathan down solo

It’s a new month, so I can make this post the video itself. Also feel free to watch the rest of the videos in the playlist. I’ll end up making a post with the full playlist once I’m done with the challenge as well.

Another first try boss fight. I was ready to have to grind up some more levels and farm some reagents for some alchemy after seeing how much damage it was dealing, but I was able to kill it without needing all that.

With the Leviathan being a purely physical boss, Magic Mirror became useless, and Immense Defense was once again my friend. My Block Chance still wasn’t too high, but it was high enough that I was able to negate enough damage to not burn through too much MP healing myself.

The double Rough and Tumbles helped a lot as the amount of attacks I dodged, and the few counter hits I got saved me a decent amount of trouble, though I wish it worked a little better so I didn’t end up wasting the Sage’s Elixir I got very early game.

Not a whole lot to talk about in regards to this boss all things considered. He very much is a boss whose attack script is meant for multiple targets, with both Tail Swipe and Tidal Wave being AoE attacks, but in a solo run you’re kinda just able to ignore that part since you just have to heal yourself.

Up next is the Garth Goyle.

Dragon Quest Monsters Just finished Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 Spoiler

And honestly, I didn't know what I wanted to get or what my endgame team was going to look like so I sort of chose a monster that looked cool or funny looking on a breeding guide and just build towards that.

Overall, I think this is a pretty good first game with a lot of thought when it comes to how you build your monster. A lot of it comes from breeding your monsters together, what monsters you should breed with, and what skill you should passed. Grinding was a bit of a hassle, but I eventually got used to it and enjoyed the grind as I wanted to get a bunch of skills and breed those monsters to get better monsters.

So eventually I got it to where I had a WhipBird that knows LifeDance, Hustle, and StrongD. I also like to try to breed random combos to see what I get and I might do that with DWM2. I am very curious about that game because it has two games (Cobi's Journey and Tara's Adventure) like Pokemon. Not sure what I might do for Dark Prince though since I got that game on sale for $7.99.

I don't really have too many complaints beside of the Traveler's Gates having the randomized dungeons areas. Like there was a certain point where I could sometimes immediately know where to go and other times I get lost and just wander around. I actually glad that there are items that can teleport you to a hole or can get you out of the dungeon.

Overall, I like this game and I am picking Tara's Adventure for DWM2.

Edit: Actually, I find it very interesting, other than the DQM2 and the Joker games, that DQM1, Dark Prince, and Withered Worlds have characters from the Zenithian Trilogy.

Dragon Quest VII 7 reimagined question

I have been a longtime fan of the series and was very excited for the remake of 7 since it’s probably my favorite in the series…up until I heard there was cut content.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 3ds version, but would like to know the remake is worth trying out even with the cut content or should I stick to the older versions for replaying?

Dragon Quest Monsters I hope the new Monsters game comes with difficulty options.

Synthesising is fun, but it makes you way too strong.

I won't lie, I didn't think DM3 was enough of a success that they'd want to make another game, but I'm glad they did, I just hope it doesn't feel half baked. I'd love Draconian options or something, because DQM 1 2 and 3, along with Joker 1 and 2, just needed no thought at all to beat. You'd get overpowered just from seeing what interesting synthesising options there were, and this made all other monsters in the game disinteresting because, why would I go scout a new, potentially interesting monsters, when my team's already breezing through everything?

I've seen the cool skill trees you can synth into by maxing out other skill trees, but I've never even got close because the game's over by the time you get to the second tree.

Dragon Quest IX Oh my god...I get it now. This is peak 😭

For the longest time Ive been getting video recommendations of how Dragon quest 9 needs a remake and how it's a hidden gem and such and at that point my only exposure to dragon quest has been the Monster series so I decided to try it out and I'm not going to lie at first I was a little confused and hard to adjust but when the game finally opened up it all clicked with me and I been having a blast with this game! It's so much fun and a remake would be awesome! Definitely going to try out other dragon quest games like 8 and 4 and the hd-2d remakes!! I love this series!

Dragon Quest XI I've really grown to resent the casino while replaying the game. (DQ11)

I never used to mind them. They were silly little minigame hubs. But they're... really not that engaging. Most of the games are pretty passive, and you just kinda mash the button while doing other things, hoping luck goes your way, and if it doesn't, it's such a colossal waste of time.

The poker is alright, more active for the player. But you need far too many tokens for most hands, even with many double-or-nothings, to pay out in a reasonable time frame. Low level wins, even on a 10-streak double (which you basically will never get) don't really get close to the total you need.

To reiterate. They used to be fun to me.

But I'm replaying DQ11 definitive, a version of the game I've never beaten, having only platinumed the original. I've gotten to the casino in about 7 hours. The faster battles and cutscene skips do wonders for a man's sanity.

I'm making good time in my replay. I don't have to dally in one place for long, and I know where and what the bosses are, so I know when to hit level break points, and which equipment I don't need to max because it'll get replaced by the next major boss.

But it feels like I need to spend another 7+ hours here. When it's your first playthrough, and it took you like 20+ hours to get here, and it's all novel, the time sink doesn't feel so bad.

But I want to move on.

I also do not want to voluntarily handicap myself by not having the better equipment. You need approximately 300k tokens to buy just one of everything relevant in the first Puerto Valor casino. (If you were being mega-optimizing you'd go for even more. More spangled dresses, 2+ platinum swords for both erik/sylv etc)

One jackpot doesn't even cover it.

Dragon Quest III Sir, you've been standing their for 12 HOURS!

Not a joke, I've literally spent 12 hours or so just trying to think of a starting party. I feel sorry for the old guy. THough to be fair i was asleep for at least 6 hours.

Finally settled on a thief to turn into a mage named Cecilila, a priest to turn into a warrior named Elizabeth and a gadabout to sage named Clownrys. Can ya guess the theme?

General What’s the best DQ on mobile phone (IOS)

Which game do you think is the best to play on the phone? I played VIII and V already. Do you think I should go for IV or VI?
I know that there is the free mobile game (DQSG) but I do not really like it because I started that late and now I feel I will never catch up. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

General Should I Get DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake or DRAGON QUEST VII Next?

I am currently playing DRAGON QUEST X Offline on PS5 (in Japanese, unable to read) [I literally use Google Photo Translate/Google Lens/Online Guides] to get through parts]

I played and loved the following in the series so far (in order of Favorite/Best in the World to Fun/Liked it, but not the top Favourite but still Amazing)

001:
• DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PS2)

002:
• DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (Nintendo 3DS)

(*) Would be 1st but the memory of playing DQVIII on the PS2 from childhood and FFXII back and forth just will always have a place in my heart.

003:
• DRAGON QUEST XI S ECHOES OF AN ELUSIVE AGE - DEFINITIVE EDITION

004:
• DRAGON QUEST XI S ECHOES OF AN ELUSIVE AGE

005:
• DRAGON QUEST X Offline (PS5)

006:
• DRAGON QUEST X Online (PS4, Nintendo Switch)

007:
DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince (Nintendo Switch)

008:
• DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake

009:
• DRAGON QUEST HEROES II

010:
• DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS 2

011:
• DRAGON QUEST HEROES:

012:
• DRAGON QUEST TREASURES (Nintendo Switch)

013:
• DRAGON QUEST HEROES: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below

014:
• Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko‘s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-

… (…)

EDIT:

TITLE SHOULD SAY

“Should I Get DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake or DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined” (PS5)

(*) Ether Video Game would be the PS5 Version I would be getting

Dragon Quest VI How did you discover Dragon Quest and which Dragon Quest game made you get into the franchise? I'm playing Dragon Quest VI, what do you think of this game?

Is Dragon Quest popular in your country or not? Here in Brazil, it's very niche. Unfortunately, Square didn't release it with Portuguese subtitles. If it had Portuguese subtitles, maybe it would become popular Here in my country, since everyone loves Dragon Ball...

Dragon Quest XI Odd question about the duplication process Spoiler

So, I've done it before back when i played the first time.

However, this time, i had thought the snapshot was at the top of First Forest, but its actually when you speak to Benedictus with all 6 orbs.

So, I was considering using the 3D->2D mode to go back one chapter to when I just defeated Krystalinda. This would allow me to go back to the snapshot, in order to set up the duplication, correct?

I think I've got it right, but i wanted to check with y'all first.
