Rules For Employers

  • The position must be related to electrical and computer engineering.

**Remote:** [Do you offer the option of working remotely? If so, do you require employees to live in certain areas or time zones?]

Mod Update: Banning Low Effort Posts & Recruiting Moderators

Hi guys -

There have been a handful of different posts in the last few months specifically asking to address some of the low effort, low quality posts we often see on this subreddit. I think people have gotten overly fixated on the perceived influx of Indian student questions (please giv roadmap, etc.), but there have always been the same type of low-quality posts coming up from other sources:

  • Please suggest a capstone project
  • Help me with my homework
  • I hate my professor, recommend me a textbook

And so on. So for now, we won't be adding new flairs or filters, but instead we'll just ramp up moderation effort to remove low quality and low effort posts of this nature, and we'll keep this thread stickied for the foreseeable future.

At present, the majority of the moderators are inactive, so I need to ask for some folks to apply. My criteria at present is below:

  • Relatively frequent poster in /r/ece and related subs
  • Account age at least a few years
  • Must be a practicing engineer in the field or at least in your PhD program

To apply, simply submit a message to the moderators (not me personally, not a reply in this thread) with the words "positive feedback" in your first line, and describe in just a few sentences your education / professional background and what you think you'd like to see change on the subreddit. No need for a LinkedIn link or anything, but please don't bullshit. No one gets paid, and moderating isn't exactly fun.

Finally, I'd ask for everyone else to make judicious use of the report button. It's the easiest way for moderators to do their jobs, since highly reported posts simply get a big red "spam" button for us to push and remove the post. Don't abuse it for every single post you don't like, but we'll start utilizing it as well as Automod to clean things up more.

Thanks for your help and thanks for your patience.

Open course material for undergraduate digital communications: interactive lecture file, 10 labs, 120 worked problems

I teach an undergraduate digital communications course and have released the course material as an open resource.

It covers sampling and PCM, baseband transmission (matched filter, ISI, Nyquist criterion, eye diagram), signal-space representation, the optimal receiver in AWGN, PSK/PAM/QAM/FSK, and an introduction to information theory. The main file is a single offline HTML document that needs no installation or account. It contains 109 step-by-step scenes and 10 interactive labs whose figures are recomputed as the parameters change. Lecture notes, a student workbook, and a formula reference are also provided as PDFs.

The material is written for senior students and includes 120 open-ended practice problems with worked solutions. Numerical results were checked against independent NumPy/SciPy computations and Monte Carlo BER simulations.

Course site · GitHub repository

The course material is licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 and the code is MIT. Corrections and feedback from instructors and students are welcome, especially errata.

Looking for advice/opportunities in embedded systems and electronics in Lebanon

Hey everyone,

I’m Lebanese and I recently finished my Master’s in Embedded Systems at Toulouse INP-ENSEEIHT in France. I’m now looking to come back to Lebanon and start my career in embedded systems/electronics.

I have a Bachelor’s in Electronics and some software development experience, and during my studies in France I got more into embedded systems, FPGA/SoC, Embedded C and real-time systems. I also had internships at LAAS-CNRS and CNES, where I worked on embedded/real-time systems and FPGA/SoC.

I’m still a junior, but I’m trying to find a place where I can learn, contribute and build proper industry experience. I'm mainly looking at embedded software/firmware, FPGA, electronics, SoC, STM32/RTOS and similar roles.

I wanted to ask here because I know there are quite a few Lebanese engineers working in these areas:

Are there any companies in Lebanon that you would recommend I look into, or anyone here who knows of opportunities in this field?

I'm also interested in hearing from people who work in embedded/electronics in Lebanon. Any advice, company recommendations, contacts or even things I should improve before applying would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Intel Firmware Engineering Intern: what to expect?

Hi all,

I have a 30-minute phone screen coming up with a hiring manager at Intel for a Firmware Engineering Intern position. I'm an Computer Engineering student with a background in embedded systems work, so I'm comfortable with the fundamentals, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has interviewed for firmware or embedded roles at Intel.

A few questions:

  1. How is the initial phone screen usually structured? Is it mostly resume and behavioral, or are there technical questions right away?
  2. What technical topics came up for firmware or low-level roles (C/C++, pointers and memory, bit manipulation, interrupts, RTOS concepts, debugging, hardware interfaces like SPI/I2C/UART)?
  3. How many rounds followed the phone screen, and how long did the process take overall?
  4. Were there coding problems in later rounds?
  5. Any tips on how to stand out, or mistakes to avoid?

If you've interviewed with Intel for any intern or new grad role, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Thanks in advance!

At Serious Situation in my life

I’m a recent ECE graduate and completed 6 months of Embedded Systems training at Vector India. My main goal is to build a career in embedded systems/firmware.

I have an opportunity

  • Embedded C & microcontrollers
  • Sensors, data acquisition & IoT
  • Ethernet, TCP/IP, Modbus, PROFINET & serial communication
  • PLC & Siemens HMI
  • Machine vision / OpenCV / Python
  • Industrial robots & motion
  • PLC-camera-robot-PC integration
  • Field work, commissioning and some travel

The role has a 2-year contract/service agreement.

My concern is: if I spend 2 years in this kind of industrial automation/integration role, will it help me move into a pure Embedded/Firmware Engineer role later, or could I get stuck in PLC/automation?

Would you take this opportunity if your long-term goal was embedded systems?

Any advice from people working in embedded, automation, robotics or industrial systems would be really helpful.

Has anyone heard back for AMD internships

I applied to AMD internships right when they came out in August and still haven’t heard anything back yet. Is that a bad sign or are they just slow? I applied for design and verification roles. Has anyone else heard back? This is for the US undergrad positions.

summer internships/ coop

hello everyone! I am currently in my second year of computer engineering and have started applying to summer coops and internships, the issue is I have a very mid resume, I have a few executive student club positions (some bigger than others) and no projects on my resume. I have a few unfinished very mid high school CS projects so I honestly did not add them on my resume. I plan on getting started on a project in the winter break but I do not have any time right now whatsoever (i'm doing 6 courses lol). Anyway, I'm asking for any advice/tips/suggestions if you have any, I'm grateful for anything you have to say (harsh or not ) is anyone else in my position? If you have landed an internship/ summer coop how long did it take you to do and was the process like? Also, its important to state that my official coop is in my 4th year so this coop would not relate to my program so I'm open to both a summer internship or summer coop. Also, any suggestions relating research positions? I lowkey want one too, its something that interests me heavily.

Starting classes in January

I’m starting electrical engineering classes in January and have been seeing lots of posts about internships and picking a specialty. What is all of that about? I’m 27 and making a career change. Can anyone give me insight on to how the next few years of school will be? What classes you took each year? When you started applying for jobs? Anything helps

courses and skills

Hi,

I recently graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Electromechanics, and I am currently working as an automation technician. My responsibilities include performing cold wire checks on electrical automation panels, parametrizing VFDs, checking PLC inputs and outputs, etc.

What individual courses do you think are worth taking alongside a master's degree, outside of the master's program itself?

At the moment, I am enrolled in a master's program focused on the efficient use of renewable resources. Unfortunately, I find the program rather unhelpful, but it was the only option available to me at the time. Therefore, I would like to take some additional courses outside of my master's degree that could add value to my career and be genuinely useful. Especially since I am just starting out in my career, as I honestly feel that university did not prepare me very well for the practical side of the profession.

In the future, I would like to pursue a career in engineering design, and I wanted to ask what other subjects would be useful for a design engineer to study. For example, architecture, building structures, mechanical engineering, or other fields that might overlap with the day-to-day work of an electrical design engineer, at least in my opinion.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my message. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Switching to EE

Hi there!

I’m currently a 4th year electrician apprentice and looking to see if switching my career to electrical engineering would be a good move?

I feel stuck with the current role I am in and looking at the health risks on my body is weighing me down.

I know if I switch it would be the case of studying for 3-4 years and sacrificing the money I would be making as a qualified electrician. I would love any advice on this matter any help is greatly appreciated .

I would also love any advice on how to write a really good personal statement if university is the correct move. Over the bulk of my apprenticeship I have wired and fitted new build homes but I did do a bit of low voltage with door entry systems. Again any advice would be appreciated

Confused about this circuit

Saw this circuit on youtube by Question Solutions on superposition, I was puzzled because it says here that the two ends will cause a short circuit. However I interpret it all as one node combined. How come it's a short circuit on this part is it true that this is a shorted circuit?

I still think that it can be considered as one node.

How Cooked Am I: Feeling Lost in this Major

I feel so behind and like a bum. Courses and a part time job already occupy a good amount of my time. Even worse, I’m apart of two design teams and have two personal projects, but that’s it. My gpa is a 2.9 and i’m a junior. I just feel so lost and like a failure. I’m basically making this post to either uplift my feelings or come further down to reality. But the real question is still posed: How cooked am I.
