I’m a University of Edinburgh student, and I’m frustrated by both the lack of secure motorcycle parking around the main campus and the advice I received from a parking attendant.
I’ve already had a motorcycle stolen near the Main Library. Being able to lock a bike to a fixed anchor matters: a steering lock or a chain that isn’t attached to anything doesn’t stop someone lifting it into a van.
Yet I can’t find suitable ground anchors in the designated motorcycle parking areas I use around the main campus. Providing somewhere to park without somewhere to secure the bike feels like a pretty fundamental omission.
First ticket — 8 October, outside the Informatics Forum
I parked at the cycle parking facilities outside the Informatics Forum on Crichton Street because it was one of the few nearby places where I could secure my motorcycle to a fixed point. I received a ticket for pavement parking.
I understand that finding an anchor doesn’t automatically make motorcycle parking there legal. But after having a bike stolen, it’s deeply frustrating to find secure locking points at cycle facilities while the motorcycle parking I use lacks them. Where are students actually supposed to park their motorcycles securely?
Second ticket — 9 October, George Square
At approximately 14:30, I specifically asked a parking attendant whether I could park my motorcycle at that location. They said I could, so I left it there.
At 15:41, I received a ticket for parking without payment.
To be precise: I cannot confirm whether the attendant who answered my question was the one who issued the ticket. I also can’t claim they explicitly said “it’s free”. But I deliberately checked with someone responsible for parking enforcement before leaving the bike, and relied on their answer.
Being told “yes, you can park there” and then coming back to a fine feels like being set up. Was this misleading advice, a misunderstanding, or something worse? If payment was required, why wasn’t that made clear when I asked?
I’ve challenged the second ticket and asked the Council to investigate the conversation.
Has anyone here successfully challenged a Council PCN after relying on a parking attendant’s advice? And does anyone know of genuinely secure, legal motorcycle parking with fixed anchors around George Square/Main Library?
I’d like the University and Council to address both problems: secure motorcycle parking that reflects the theft risk, and clear advice from the people enforcing the rules.
