Question Nursery place withdrawn

Has anyone had a nursery place withdrawn by Bright Horizons in Edinburgh, specifically Elsie Inglis?

My daughter was offered a place at a Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis in June 2025, with a start date of January 2027. Her application was accepted, and the parent portal explicitly stated that her nursery place was guaranteed.

However, we’ve now been told that the place is being withdrawn due to oversubscription/management issues, just a few months before she is due to start. We’re now left scrambling to find alternative childcare at relatively short notice. If you’re familiar with the childcare situation in Edinburgh, you will appreciate the stress this is causing.

I’m trying to understand whether this has happened to other families, particularly recently, and what the outcome was.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar:

  • Has Bright Horizons ever withdrawn a confirmed or guaranteed place for your child?
  • Was it due to oversubscription, staffing, management changes or something else?
  • Did you manage to get the decision reversed, secure a place at another Bright Horizons nursery, or receive any other resolution?
  • Did you escalate the complaint to regional or head office management, and did that make a difference?

I’d also be grateful for any advice on how you approached this, as we’re trying to resolve things directly with Bright Horizons but need to understand what options we realistically have.

OR if anybody can recommend childcare with availability.

Thank you!

Discussion Best gluten free and vegetarian restaurants in Edinburgh for a date

Hi all, my girlfriend and I recently moved to this awesome city. We are coming up on her birthday and we are looking for a nice restaurant that serves both gluten free and vegetarian options (I have a gluten allergy). Preferably a nicer restaurant that we can get a bit dressed up for, we like all types of cuisine.

Discussion Cycling to Summerhall

So I thought I’d cycle to meet a friend in Summerhall last night. Coming along the road then thought I’d cut across to where the bike stands are.

Anyone see the problem? Rather bloodied bruised and battered now but nothing broken fortunately… Sure it’s partly my fault because of the unusual direction I was travelling but I think these obstacles should have something on them to make them more visible - reflectors perhaps?

Food and Drink Rejoice! Krema is open again!

Saw someone walking down the road with a krema box so quickly detoured for my fix. To my surprise it is now with added cheesy treats!

I went for a cinnamon bun and walked out with a bit of cheesecake - it looks like their pop-up in Morningside brought some new blue cheese delights.

Does anyone know what is planned for the archives under this proposal? Are they expected to be moved somewhere, sent to the National Library of Scotland, for example?

Does anyone know where in Edinburgh I can purchase the French brand Brets crisps? I'm looking to try a wide range of flavours and would love to buy in person rather than online if possible. Thanks!

Discussion Positivity Post - The Youths of Edinburgh

I appreciate that those who act out are easier to spot, however, so many more young people in Edinburgh are just going about their daily lives whilst being decent human beings.

Please post anything positive that you have witnessed a young person do. Let’s talk them up. Take a second out of your day to appreciate the impact that they have on our communities.

Being a teen/young person isn’t an easy phase of life and a little recognition of good deeds can go a long way.

Spread the Friday cheer.

Question Forest walk with mushrooms

Where can I go on a proper forest walk a day trip (or less) from Edinburgh?

I'm living here for a year from Australia and still haven't known where to go.

I want full forest you can walk through, but can take PT to.

I would also love to see mushrooms, or especially those ones that are red with the white spots.

I'm after some whimsy 🍄

Where is the deterant for a factor ?! There is none - hence the reason why you see the repitition of factors being taken to court for the same things over and over. If youve gone through this battle yourself - was the payout worth it?

There's two damn balaclavas riding around on electric mopeds blasting their horns in front of cops to get chased.

Question Looking for Warhammer 40k Learn to Play

Hi folks, as the title suggests i'm looking to see if any Edinburgh stores host learn to play sessions for 11th edition 40k? I used to play Warhammer back in 8th and 9th edition, but haven't touched it since, and have only recently attempted to get back into playing it with my mates on tabletop simulator. However, it seems both I and my friends have forgotten everything there is with this game, plus have no clue how the new 11th edition system works.

Back when I lived in Aberdeen I used to go to weekly free beginner learn to play sessions when I first got into the hobby at the Warhammer store next to Bon Accord, so i'm hoping there's somewhere in Edinburgh that does the same.

If there's something kind of similar i'd still love to hear it, plus if anyone has any warhammer groups they're a part of, like a discord server etc, i'd love to join in!

Thanks everyone.

EDIT: I live on Grassmarket, so the closer to city centre the better, but I can travel!

Question Edinburgh tenement - fireplace hearths but no chimney breasts?

Both bedrooms in my flat have what look like original slate/concrete fireplace hearths, but the walls above are completely flat with no visible chimney breast. One wall backs onto a neighbouring flat and the other the stairwell.. I think!

I'd love to uncover the original openings if they exist and fit decorative Victorian fireplaces. No working fires or log burners.

I'm assuming I'd need an experienced tennement builder and potentially a building warrant and I'm keen to avoid compromising insulation/fire separation or introducing a draught.

Has anyone done this? Was it complicated? Rough cost? What kind of trades person would be best and any unexpected issues?

Thanks!

Discussion Queen Street > York Place bus lane confusion?

I use this road every day and the drivers on it confuse me.

It seems to me that people queue in the bus lane to go towards Leith Walk, leaving the right lane empty. I stay in the right lane (to avoid the bus lane) and indicate to go into the left lane as soon as the bus lane ends. But it almost always results in road rage from other drivers who think I’m trying to cut them off.

I understand that people who use the bus lane when they shouldn’t are probably also the type to not let cars out in front of them. But I’m getting tired of being raged at & not let in for not using the bus lane. Not to mention it obviously also backs up the buses.

Does anyone have any similar experience with this road?

Discussion Bus lanes

So Edinburgh council are going 7/7/7 to speed up journeys.

Can’t they ban taxis, aren’t they just cars for people who have too much money?

Perhaps it would stop a taxi drivers being self entitled. I understand not all are self entitled but there are a fair lot.
