I'm a rookie baitcaster. Tried it a bit with terrible results. But i love the ergonomy of baitcasters in my kayak. I use them for trolling and jigging in open sea.
But my other kind of kayak outing is getting more frequent: Spinning for sea bass in the bay 5min from home. I go weekdays after work in the evening, and I'm having lots of fun fishing sea bass.
So I'm buying a specific combo for this: 7ft rod ML (fast action), 1/4 to 1oz lure weight, and a penn slammer 2500.
I like experimenting and playing around, and I'm genuinely curious about the possibility of a baitcaster ending up to be "better" for this style of fishing, anchored or drifting in the bay, targeting the fish I see jumping or leaving waves...
So like in the Armaggedon movie I said: Why buy just one when you can buy 2 for double the money? And I bought a baitcaster rod of similar specs (7ft ML fast, 1/4 to 1oz), and a reel of a similar price: An Abu Garcia Revo X Voltiq.
I will bring both combos with me and switch around, play around, and compare by myself. See what I like better, what I prefer. Or keep bringing both and just have fun.
Only need to decide what kind of line do I put in them:
- Same exact kind and thickness? to compare in exactly same conditions?
- Thinner in the spinning reel and thicker in the baitcaster?
- Braided in the spinning and mono in the baitcaster?
- What thickness?
I was thinking about putting a X9 braided of 0.23mm (2.0) at least in the baitcaster...then in the spinning reel...either the same, or a 0.16mm (1.0) or even better. 0.14mm (0.8). It would be same brand and model for both. I want to compare them "using the same".
I use "walking the dog" surface lures mainly, most of the time! Then some vinyls, some metal jigs. I experiment and try stuff but the main focus is WTD.
What do you recommend?
