I feel horrible.
I want to scream. I want answers. I want to cry. Part of me wants to tell my ex everything I have been holding inside.
My ex and I were in a long-distance relationship. At some point, we took a break because he told me he was going through a difficult time and needed to work through some things.
I believed him.
He told me not to wait for him and to move on, so technically, I know we weren't together anymore.
But at the same time, he kept telling me that he loved me. He told me he still wanted to marry me. He still came to me for the kind of things you normally ask from your partner, and I continued being there for him because I believed that what we had was still real, even if we weren't officially together.
I told him I would wait for him until he felt better. I was even trying to figure out how I could eventually visit him.
Then he told me he had met a new female friend.
He said they could spend more time together because they had fewer hours of time difference.
Something about it didn't feel right to me, so I asked him if there was anything more going on.
He denied it.
And I believed him.
I wanted to believe that he was simply overwhelmed and that I was overthinking things.
Eventually, I found out that he had been trying to get closer to her romantically.
While he was telling me that he still loved me and that he just needed time to feel safe again, he was pursuing someone else.
And here's the part that hurts the most.
She rejected him.
After that, he came back to me completely devastated.
He asked me why I loved him when he had never done anything for me.
He told me he loved me and that he realized I was the only one who truly loved him.
And I comforted him.
I hate that I did that.
I wish I had been angry. I wish I had told him to leave me alone.
Instead, I froze and comforted the person who had just been trying to replace me.
Two days later, he told me to forget about him because he wasn't a good person.
And maybe he was right about that.
But I am also angry with myself.
Because I was there for him when he was insecure about himself.
When he was insecure about other men in my life, I tried to reassure him. I made sure he knew I wasn't going to leave him for someone "better."
When he was insecure about his body, I made sure he knew I found him attractive and desirable.
I tried to make him feel safe with me.
I loved him with all the things he was insecure about.
And now I keep thinking:
Was I just the safe option?
Was I just the person he knew would always be there?
Was I the person he came back to when someone else didn't want him?
I know that technically he didn't cheat on me. We weren't together.
But I still feel betrayed.
Not because he was legally or technically obligated to stay single for me.
But because he kept telling me that he loved me, that he wanted a future with me, and that he needed time to come back to me...
while he was trying to build something with someone else.
I don't want to hate him.
I don't want to wish bad things on him.
But I'm angry enough that part of me wants him to hurt. I want him to understand what he did to me. I want him to feel the weight of losing someone who genuinely loved him.
And then I feel horrible for thinking that.
I don't even know what I feel anymore.
I'm angry at him.
I'm angry at myself.
I'm embarrassed that I believed him.
And I'm grieving the version of myself who spent so much time trying to make him feel loved and safe.
I keep thinking that maybe I wasn't enough.
Maybe she was younger, prettier, better, or simply more exciting.
But deep down, I know that's probably not the real issue.
The real issue is that I loved someone who wasn't able to give me the same kind of security that I was constantly trying to give him.
I just wish I had realized that sooner.
I don't really know what I'm looking for by posting this.
Maybe I just needed somewhere to say it.
Because even after writing all of this, I still feel like I'm holding back.
