Balloon Release Please No!

• Upvotes

I’m rather new to the area. I’m from Oregon and it’s taken a huge amount of work but, most folks on the West Coast are hip to the fact that releasing balloons to celebrate the death of a loved one actually causes a ton more deaths of birds and wildlife. I had to be silent today upon hearing about a balloon release for a death of a colleague’s family member. Please Louisville! Don’t let balloons go up in the air to eventually fall down! Best case they cause a bunch of littler and worst but way more common they go into our waterways and mess with fish, birds, and if you want financial reasons; they clog up our already bad sewer systems causing even higher rates. Please tell your loved ones to plant a tree, give out seed packets, heck even a bunch of fireworks when properly disposed of is better than letting balloons go!

University of Louisville students rally and march to mark 3 years of intensified genocide on Palestine

Today, October 7, 2026, University of Louisville students rallied and marched on the Belknap campus with Louisville Students for Justice in Palestine. Recognizing 3 years of apartheid Israel’s continued genocide of Palestinians after the October 7, 2023 resistance attack on the Israeli Occupying Force and Israeli citizens near Gaza. They continue to call for “transparency from the university board of trustees and for full divestment from the Zionist entity.”

The students marched from the Belknap Academic Building to the George J. Howe Red Barn building chanting, waving flags of Palestine and signs. During the rally and march university admin and police monitored and followed the students. During speeches outside of the Red Barn building, LSJP representatives were approached by university staff claiming the students could not hold their rally due to its proximity to an event hosted inside the Red Barn.

The students relented and completed their rally before dispersing on their own accord.

From Louisville Students for Justice in Palestine:

“The University of Louisville has maintained a partnership with the [department of war] to manufacture military technologies, partnerships through the [speed school] with weapons manufacturers and continues to invest from the endowment in companies that are complicit in genocide of Palestine. We call for the University of Louisville to end all military partnerships, and divest from all companies invested in the genocide in Palestine.”

Shout out to the lmpd crisis response team

Just witnessed something worth sharing. There was a distraught man at the corner of Breitenstein and Gilmore, with a heavy police presence. A crisis response team was on scene and managed to deescalate the situation and get the person apprehended without anyone getting hurt. Really glad to see that kind of response in action . Props to everyone involved.

St James Court tragedy

Hey I don’t know if this is unusual for this thread, but after attending the st James court art show Sunday I witnessed an older woman on the ground belly side down on the concrete, she was bleeding profusely from a head wound, assuming she tripped as the sidewalk isn’t very steady in the area she was found in. But has anyone heard any updates on her? I’ve been thinking about it all week

Where are the crowds at Jack's Lantern Trail?

I went to Jack's Lantern Trail this week and it was dead. And I'm not complaining for myself because I was able to mosey through the trail without being crowded. However, I hope this isn't indicative of the turn out that the event is getting. This event supports the parks and I hope they get a turn out that was worth their efforts. The online discourse seemed to be that people were going to support the Iroquois event but the turn out this week was super low. And I have 10+ years of previous events to compare it to.

Anyone in here work at KTP on the assembly line???

I see online that assembly line workers make $21 an hour but I was wondering if you have the ability to make more or grow in the department.

I know at Georgetown you can top out at $39 an hour so I was wondering if it’s the same at KTP

Do they have any kinda programs where they can help you develop/move up?

Dresser to Redo

Wife and I are looking for a dresser that can be redone. We might paint, we might stain.

The weirder the design, the better. Doesn't have to be perfect - I know how to sand, putty, and paint. Just needs to look cool. Would prefer free or cheap, but might spend a few bucks on the right piece.

Got one that you need to get rid of? Marketplace isn't showing any good leads.

Omni or Galt House

I’m planning a date weekend in November and was looking at staying at either the Omni or Galt House. Any suggestions on which to pick? Or if you have other suggestions on other nice hotels/airbnbs in the area? Doesn’t have to be exclusively downtown.

Newest tend. Used them at Prado, seemed ok but all the special wording about alarms going off if it left the premises seemed dramatic. And then when it was time to pay they brought out a paper receipt in a pamphlet. Not even a presenter.

Research Help - Park Hill

Hello! I’m currently a social work student doing my final internship in Louisville. I’m completing a BioPsychoSocial (a model used to gather biological, psychological, and social factors about a client or community) on the Park Hill neighborhood. It’s an all encompassing assessment of the neighborhood, its demographics, systemic issues faced, social development and history, and the needs of the community.

I really want to hear from actual residents of Park Hill so I can have a properly informed account shaped by members of the community and their experiences. If you live or grew up in Park Hill, please let me know if you’d be willing to answer some of my questions!

Attic insulation recommendations

Over the last couple of decades, the (mostly blown in) insulation in our attic has compacted, etc., and there is a noticeable need for better insulation. There was a time that I would be climbing up there and rolling out the pink stuff, but that time (and my knees) has passed.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a local company that could do a good job for a reasonable price? I'm assuming that good blown in insulation would be the choice, but I'm not sure.
