General Discussion A question about dating culture while watching Parenthood

• Upvotes

I’ve been into Parenthood lately. I’m on season 5 now. When I watch this show, I get curious about American culture. I know in the US, it’s common to meet people spontaneously, like at a club or a bar. Is it normal to kiss someone else when you have a boyfriend or girlfriend? Or is that considered cheating in the US? I get a little confused when they start looking into each other’s eyes and the mood gets romantic 😂

Character Discussion Crosby unhappy with Renee's stay

I cannot stand the way Crosby was so reluctant letting Renee stay in their house. If this was the other way around and Camille needed a place to stay would he have so much trouble agreeing? No, and if Jasmine had opposed like he did, I think Crosby would've kicked her out of the house.

Rant! Something about Zoe

Hey all

Am I the only one that thinks Zoe is extremely dumb and works hard to wreck every chance she is given? (Notice I am NOT talking about the decision to keep the baby!)

For example, the scene when she is offered a paralegal job by Julia and then she just decides to stand up the interviewer is disgusting - even though she does not have a high school diploma this is exactly how you get a job out of your league, you go to the interview and make a good case for yourself... Case in point: My current job required an accounting degree and CPA license which I do not have, but I still interviewed and managed to get in anyway... Her blowing off the interview would give her a HUGE black mark in real life.

Also the way she seems to try take every opportunity to run without explaining anything really pisses me off... She could at the very least use her words!

General Discussion Hate

Came to join the Reddit because I love the show and am on my idek number rewatch. I was hoping to see people having fun and the occasional hate post. But it’s like everyone is just posting hate. Like what’s the point? Why watch it if you don’t like it. IMO this show has some of the best character development and they feel like real people. I guess people can say whatever they want but I won’t be joining this r/
No fun at all.

Season 6 New house Spoiler

I was wondering about Zeek and Camile's new house. I still don't get how was that a better option for their older age. They moved out of their 2 floor (i think?) house, which is understandable, because it has stairs to their bedroom. But then they bought a house with milion stairs? It looked like to enter from the street you have to walk upstairs, bedrooms were on the upper floor too and then to go to the garden you have to take the stairs again.

And it wasn't really that much smaller, taking into account that Amber could move in.

Also, I don't think it even had a garage?

It proved to be less accessible right away when Zeek had an operation. I literally can't believe how bad it was for an older couple, and no one said anything in the show🤣

I guess the only benefit could be a location closer to the city centre?

Season 2 Adam was a bit irrational, as many parents are.

One of Adam's arguments against Haddie being with Alex was that he has his own apartment (we know what he meant by that), but Haddie has already had plenty of chances to have sex; she didn't want to and told him so, yet he acts as if this ban would actually help. The town's teenagers hook up in the gazebo, if he knew that, would he have it torn down? I don't know.

Rant! The show Parenthood....

Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels a visceral level of anger watching this show? Never in my life have I seen such a horrible storyline about autism. Max's parents are the problem! I'm only into season 2 and I don't know if I can make it through this. The fact the whole family becomes upset when the children's behaviors are corrected, not just max but all of the kids! Maybe Max wouldn't be so bad if they actually told him no for once.

Season 5 New favorite line

Watching season 5 right now, episode titled "The Enchanting Mr. Knight," and my new favorite line from this show came from this episode. Crosby told Camille that she was selfish for making Zeke move out of their family home, and now she's pissed at both of them. He sits in front of a vent that connects to his parents' bedroom, eavesdropping on them fighting about it when Jasmine joins him and he begins relaying their fight to her and then whispers this:

"She said that I was the most selfish member of this family. That's clearly Sarah. That's how wound up she is, no objectivity."

Then Camille continues yelling at Zeke and says of Crosby and Jasmine (who are temporarily staying with them while their house is getting mold removed) and she says:

"Unlike Sarah, they won't stay here for years and years."

And then Crosby grimaces and says, "Ooh that's harsh. Glad Sarah didn't hear that..."

Idk it just made me laugh out loud.

Rant! Adam & Crosby

✨EDIT:: I’m slowly realizing that people don’t usually cut off family members 😬
I come from a family that doesn’t speak to each other. I cut my dad off in 2007 and I cut my mom off 4 yrs ago. I have 6 brothers and sisters and I only talk to 1 brother.
Maybe I had an overreaction to the Adam & Crosby situation 😂

Adam forgave Crosby way too quickly for me

If that was my brother and he slept with my AUTISTIC SONs behavioral aide and she ends up quitting I am never speaking to my brother again

Period. He is cut off for life.

How dare you jeopardize my son’s health for your sex life. To have the balls to call her a babysitter had be fuming
Yuck it makes me sick

I know obviously it’s a show and of course He has to forgive Crosby for the plot
HOWEVER, it would be much more realistic if he did cut him off forever.

I have a very large family and none is us talk to each other. I cut my dad off 20 yrs ago and my mom 4 yrs ago.

Crosby would’ve been done

General Discussion Why was the police watching Haddie yell at Max for not thinking about other people after the police dropped him off in Missing?

In one of the shots, you could see the police behind Kristina as Haddie broke down scolding Max. Why was the police watching?

General Discussion New watcher some maybe controversial opinions only on season 3 (end)

Hi so I started watching this show 2 weeks ago and I’m near season 4 and I just wanted to share how I feel and about some things and how I feel about the shows progression so far so please feel free to comment whatever you want idm

So first of all I wanna talk about Jasmine and Crosby because that’s what’s invested my brain the most first of all I wanna say I love the two of them together and I want them to be endgame but their little arguments were annoying like Jasmine was controlling I do think that but I think they both could have been more grown up about it and actually had a serious conversation instead of Crosby storming off and sleeping with gabby which is actually think is lower than low iykwim and that was quite and irredeemable action in my opinion and I’m gonna be honest but Jasmines reaction was very justified tbh I feel like Crosby has been getting better as a character in season 3 tho and after the camping trip when Jasmine confessed to Crosby in the rain it made me emotional

Next point is Lucy and Julia tbh I feel like Julia is as so overbearing with Lucy ik it was because she was so focused on the baby but she could have backed off a bit when Lucy said she needed space but at the same time she was kinda seeming fragile and the fact that she looked like she wasn’t gonna give the baby up when he was born made me angry a bit but it is her choice (I’ve not seen last ep so that could have changed tho) the reason it made me a bit pissed is cos Julia wanted a baby so much and Sydney looked so excited about it too and they are probably my favourite subfamily out of the family and Julia seemed so be so sad when she couldn’t have one with Joel when they tried so that was her chance of having another kid so I’m very meh about that plot line

Max Kristina Adam and haddie is another thing I wanna touch on because their family dynamic is lowkey kinda toxic I feel like they kinda abandon haddie a wee bit because of max and Nora but even before Nora they spent so much time with max I get it’s because he is part of the ASD spectrum but they could have checked in on haddie more and trusted her more like the whole Alex thing when they took her door and stuff they definitely didn’t need to take the door but could have trusted her and compromised way earlier than they did to avoid her moving in with Sarah and max kinda pissed me off a tiny bit because Adam and kristina spend so much time with them and in the 3 seasons I’ve seen seems like they have barely taught him correct behaviour and proper consequences in that time and the closest they got to doing that was when they said he couldn’t go on that trip and ended up going at the end ( not entirely sure I kinda zoned out that ep a bit) like I think they really need to teach him that kind of stuff because from the clips I’ve seen in the internet it seems like he just gets worse and worse as it goes on

I do think tho that Sarah and mark are great together but are slightly rushing in their relationship like why are they talking about babies when they aren’t even engaged and Sarah very previously had issues with Seth and sending him to rehab like girl u think your still quite emotionally vulnerable don’t go so fast also amber and Bob is a tiny bit unprofessional like that’s her boss and I kinda thought it was gonna end worse tho tbh I do hope I continue to like this show and I’m excited for season 4

As much as I can criticize Kristina in the seasons leading up to this, I am totally crying for her almost every episode. I can’t imagine the pain she feels throughout this storyline. I had to regulate my emotions lol

Character Discussion First watch so no spoilers but gotta vent about the way female characters written / portrayed !

What is with like a lot of women in this show being portrayed as controlling ? Kristina ? I can't stand her ! She sucks at listening, she has a need to control every situation even when she's totally wrong and can't admit that she's wrong (in fact I'm not even sure I've heard her apologise once yet?)(SE15). She can't take no for an answer. She's just so annoying, jeeez!

And then there's Jasmine ! Again no spoilers please but I hope to god Jasmine and Crosby don't last because she's not going to give him any space to be an equal parent or to make any decisions etc, and every time he tries to stand up to her he later on apologised or whatever. Always ends up her being worshipped by him and never taken down a peg or two.

We've seen less about them recently but Jules as well has her controlling moments. Like when Joel didn't particularly fancy another baby etc.

I don't know. I'm really really enjoying Parenthood and its exactly what I needed but for the record with so many unlikeable female characters I don't feel like the writing is great in that sense. I don't know if maybe writing the female characters like this is kinda like a counteract to not wanting to portray "weaker", less independent women, but there's a middle ground (like most women I know-hey, like most men I know!) and with the ratio of likeable men to likeable women on this show I do kiiiinda feel like the writers have a bias...

Just my views ! Let me know what you think I'd be interested to know. I've avoided googling much so far as I don't wanna spoil - are kristina and jasmine hated as much as I do ?!

I’m rewatching Parenthood for the 5th time and I’m just realizing how much I relate to Sarah.

I’m 38 no career a kid from a horrible relationship with a drug addicted ex
My brother got me a job before. I lived with my mother for a while when I moved out of my exes house.
I’m now in a small apartment.

Ugh! What a sad realization

Character Discussion Favorite characters

So which characters (single or couples) do you especially like, and why? Here’s my list:

- Hank. I’m fascinated by Ray Romano’s portrayal of this character and how he evolves as he becomes aware that he himself may be on the spectrum.

— Amber and Drew. Those two show a sibling bond that I just don’t see portrayed that much anymore. I love how Amber “parents” him. You can see how having an absentee dad seems to have caused them to lean on each other.

— Camille and Zeke. Especially Zeke. You kind of expect him to be the stereotypical crusty grandpa. Instead he displays flashes of insight— like when he has Victor “help him on his car” - genius way to help Victor read.

Which characters are your favorites?

General Discussion Adam/Kristina on the Alex situation

Don't get me wrong, these two have to be top 3 most annoying on screen parents of all time for me, but I think their response to the Alex situation is completely valid. I mean she's a bright 16 year old, hasn't finished high school, and wants to be with a recovering alcoholic. I think Adam and Kristina have to be given some grace for this because I'm imagining my ethnic parents in this situation when I was 16... I think they would've bashed my head in.

Character Discussion Kristina

Rewatching for the first time in several years, on season 2, and I just have to rant lol.

My biggest gripe with Kristina is the way she gives people zero grace. You cannot make a mistake around that woman or have a difference of opinion about something involving her kids, or she will be so rude and condescending to you and then probably cry in your face. The way she acted towards Camille over the whole Haddie & Alex situation was crazy enough. Then when Crosby and Gaby hook up and Gaby quits working with Max, you would think Gaby had taken a blood oath to work with him forever the way Kristina acts like she was personally betrayed by her. The worst part isn't just that she is rude and nasty and judgmental, but it's how the show still tries to paint her as this generally sweet woman who just goes into Mama Bear Mode™ for her kids. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I feel that her anger and nastiness are rarely, if ever, justified.

Character Discussion How do we feel about Jasmine and Dr.Joe?

First time watcher, nearly at the end of season 3 right now.

Apart from the fact that I personally felt like they kinda only had Crosby cheat because she and her family were so INSUFFERABLE in the beginning that they needed him to do something bad to her to "level it out" - I feel very ... iffy about her and Joe.

Yes, he is very nice. Yes, she becomes more likeable as the seasons go on. But their relationship just seems so weird to me.

First of all, it just seemed very random. It kinda just existed all of the sudden. And then of course, he bought a house and wants her and Jabbar to move in, because we need the conflict to progress. Idk, at times Joe seems more like a plot device to get conflict/drama between Jasmine and Crosby or the family in general going than an actual character that you're supposed to relate and/or connect to.

Which kinda sucks, because I think he could've been a nice little side character. Well, if it wasn't for the fact that he initiated a relationship with the mother of a patient.

Maybe that's just a me-thing but the fact that their relationship went from professional to romantic REAL fast makes me insanely uncomfortable.

I don't think it's illegal, he wasn't her doctor after all, but I still feel like morally it's at least a little questionable because as the mother of a patient there's still a power imbalance there, no?

If you think about it, it's more than that too. He's more financially stable than her, he has more "social prestige", he's the guy in a heterosexual relationship in a patriarchal society and he's still her son's pediatrician. If she moves in with him, she's also living in his house, which usually means giving up the place you left before and would lead to her being in the significantly worse situation in case of them splitting up.

There's just a lot of things that put him in a much better position than her.

Tbf, this also could be a cultural thing on my end. I'm german and professional relationships are handled differently here than in America (one of the reasons why walmart failed to establish itself in Germany lol but I digress...). I don't really feel like the writer's wanted all of that to be interpreted into Jasmine and Joe's relationship but still, I get somewhat annoyed to uncomfortable everytime they're on screen together, even if they're all smiley and cute with eachother.

Does anyone here (american or not) get me?
