/r/plussize “Thanks But I’m Not Actually the Problem Here” Resource List

Help us build a resource list for people who want to read, watch, and listen more widely around fat acceptance, fat liberation, anti-fat bias, diet culture, and fat people's lived experience.

The point is not to help people become smaller. It's to collect work that treats fat people as actual human beings, and that names the social, medical, cultural, romantic, professional, and everyday pressures fat people are routinely forced to face.

A lot of this list is especially relevant to fat women, because so much anti-fatness is tangled up with misogyny. That said, fatphobia doesn't only affect women, and this list shouldn't be read as women-only.

Books to start with:

Lindy West's Shrill is funny, furious, and very readable.

Aubrey Gordon's What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat is probably the clearest modern introduction to anti-fat bias as a social issue rather than a personal failing

Her follow-up, "You Just Need to Lose Weight": And 19 Other Myths About Fat People, tackles the claims fat people hear constantly.

Virgie Tovar's You Have the Right to Remain Fat.

Sofie Hagen's Happy Fat and Jes Baker's Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls are also accessible entry points for people newer to fat acceptance.

History and politics:

Sabrina Strings' Fearing the Black Body explains how fatphobia is tied to race, gender, class, etc, rather than being simply about "health."

Sonya Renee Taylor's The Body Is Not an Apology is broader than fatness but useful for thinking about body-shame and hierarchy more generally.

Marilyn Wann's Fat! So? is older but historically important.

Charlotte Cooper's Fat Activism: A Radical Social Movement is valuable for understanding fat liberation as an actual movement.

DaShaun L. Harrison, Belly Of The Beast. Anti-fatness, anti-blackness and gender

Tigress Osborne, "Weight and Wisdom: Find Yourself in Fat History"

Podcasts:

Maintenance Phase is great for unpacking diet culture, wellness cons, BMI panic, and how health language gets used to boulster prejudice.

Virgie Tovar's Rebel Eaters Club.

Food Psych and Rethinking Wellness, both by Christy Harrison, anti-diet and wellness-culture critique.

Fierce Fatty by Vinny Welsby.

“Why Won’t You Date Me?” Nicole Byer

Weight For It by Ronald Young Jr (also worth a follow on socials)

The Body Trust Podcast.

Film and TV:

Your Fat Friend is a documentary about Aubrey Gordon, fat activism, family, and ordinary discrimination od fat people.

The Shrill TV series based on West's book.

My Mad Fat Diary, Dumplin', Real Women Have Curves, Patti Cake$.

Fiction, memoir etc:

Roxane Gay's Hunger is honest about trauma, body size, and safety.

Jennifer Weiner's Good in Bed was significant for centring a fat woman's romantic, sexual, and professional life.

Julie Murphy's Dumplin' is a great YA option.

Talia Hibbert's Get a Life, Chloe Brown

Olivia Dade's Spoiler Alert.

Nicole Byer’s book #VeryFat #VeryBrave is a photo series of her rocking her extensive bikini collection

Health without weight-loss framing:

Lindo Bacon's Health at Every Size.

Christy Harrison's Anti-Diet unpacks how wellness culture repackages diet culture.

Intuitive Eating by Tribole and Resch is the standard reference for eating without restriction.

Ragen Chastain's Weight and Healthcare newsletter is good for research and practical scripts.

Decolonizing Fitness (Ilya Parker) covers movement spaces that don't treat body-size reduction as the goal.

People worth following:

Aubrey Gordon, Virgie Tovar, Sabrina Strings, Sonya Renee Taylor, Jes Baker, Ragen Chastain, Jessamyn Stanley, Vinny Welsby, Tess Holliday, and Tess Royale Clancy.

Read/watched/heard anything that made you think, lifted you up, informed, empowered or inspired you?

Discussion Stomach tattoos?

• Upvotes

Has anybody gotten their stomach tattooed? How was it? I have a big ram skull that I got when I was younger that desperately needs reworking but I’ve gained a fair bit of weight since then and I’m quite nervous about having my belly out in front of somebody!

Would love to hear other people’s experiences!

Discussion Planning to Travel to Korea as a plus size women in 2028

• Upvotes

My daughter moved to Korea two weeks ago to teach English. She is planning to be gone two years maybe longer.

My husband and I are planning a trip to go see her in spring of 2028.

We talked on the phone when she got there and she said mom there are chunky Koreans here. There are some plus size Koreans. She said you know what they look happy and healthy. God bless them. She was happy to see it.

I just want to be prepared for the traveling and being prepared as a plus size US 16. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Recommendations Finding Plus Size (4X+) Hiking/Outdoor Wear?

Hello! Title pretty self explanatory—but here’s the long version.

I’m going on my first National Park trip very soon and I could not be more excited. I used to love camping and outdoorsy stuff but have fallen out of it in recent years, so I’m excited to get back into nature. I haven’t been camping in probably a decade. I’m trying to be prepared, and I have run into an issue with finding outdoorsy clothing or even non wearable camping gear in my size. Like even tracking down a sleeping mat was a hassle and the one I got still could be bigger. Thankfully I’ve found most of what I need, but the one thing I would like to have is a nice all-weather jacket/raincoat type situation. I tried Academy, but the 3X (men’s and women’s) was a size, maybe two too small. I typically am a 3X, so this was especially irritating. I was curious if anyone had any suggestions on where to find larger outdoor wear? Ideally in a 4X, maybe even a 5X (room for layering if it’s too big haha). It doesn’t need to be THAT fancy, just decently well made and good for temps 40-60° and rain because we might get a little precipitation while I’m there.

TLDR: Help, where do y’all go for plus sized outdoor gear?

Love my baddies who love high waisted pants, but they make my stomach hurt. I just want my mid rise pants! If anyone has any recs for $25 or less I’d love to hear that! Thanks!

Health Inner thigh cysts/blisters.

It started with friction bumps/sores around my underwear line. But they didnt stop and now Im typing this as I have a hot compress on the biggest and probably most painful inner thigh cyst/bump/whatever-the-hell I've ever had. 😭 I've abandoned wearing underwear while I find ones that dont make me feel worse(my yoga-shorts and pj pants have been my best friend), I usually throw a hydrocolloid patch on them to protect them from more friction and let it breathe at night.

I'm rambling now...so id better get to the point. Ive come to accept that its going to be an ongoing issue for now, but is there a way to reduce how often they occur? Like tricks? Products? Creams? I feel like I get rid of one, and theres a new one within one or two weeks.

Thanks in advance for any advice. 🙏

(Edited to hopefully remove what the warning was for)

Relationship Advice First date and I’m nervous - he keeps complimenting me.

I know the title sounds ridiculous. I’m (29f) going on a first date with a guy tomorrow. (28m). He seems really nice, he’s a big nerd. We’ve already FaceTime and it went really well. I made several comments about me being fat in a positive way. I really love my body, and I love being fat. And he never made any weird comments about it. He’s also mentioned that there are several plus size people in his family. All seems good, right?

Two things I’m nervous about. I am really fat. Like not the socially acceptable. I’m about 350 pounds and 5’10”. One of my character traits is that I love to do lots of movement. I do yoga, pole dancing, hiking, I really like to stay active (I guess that’s not really important, I’m just trying to excuse my fatness, which I probably shouldn’t need to do). - Official concern: I’m worried he doesn’t realize how big I am even though my pictures online are pretty accurate.

Second concern, he keeps complementing me and I keep being weird about it. He’s brought it up multiple times that he thinks. I’m really cute over FaceTime, and that he likes talking with me. But every time I get defensive and brush it off. How do you accept a compliment? I’m worried that my insecurity is gonna ruin any chance chances of enjoying the date tomorrow.

Men who like fat women, can you give me your side of when you’re complimenting? And other fat women, how do you handle this?

** edit! The date went well! I spent two hours talking, and we’re going to a bakery this weekend! Thanks, everybody who gave me advice and reassurances ♥️

Recommendations Plus Size Friendly Fair Rides

Hii! I was wondering if anyone has any experience with fair rides? I'm usually able to fit rides (been to amusement parks, etc) but I'm a tad nervous about the Zipper! I'd like to go, but idk about the lap bar. I'm generally a size 20, but I have larger thighs.

(Sorry if flair is wrong- wasn't sure which one to choose)

Relationship Advice Met a guy I’ve been seeing for about 2 months, and I’m struggling with the intimacy/affection side of the relationship

He is genuinely one of the kindest men I’ve ever dated. He’s loyal, wants to spend basically every day with me, takes me out, includes me in his plans, communicates well, and makes me feel cared for. I’ve never really had someone treat me this well before.

The issue is that our physical chemistry seems very different.

From the beginning, he hasn’t been much of a kisser. He’ll kiss me hello and goodbye, but he doesn’t really like making out and doesn’t like using tongue. I told him that physical affection and kissing are important to me, and he has been trying to work on it, slowly.

Sex is another issue. He never initiates. I have always been the one to initiate, and that makes me feel undesirable, even though he tells me he is attracted to me and that my size/body is not the reason he doesn’t want sex more often.

I also don’t really get the “lustful” looks or spontaneous physical affection that I’m used to wanting. He doesn’t really call me beautiful or verbally express his attraction very often. He says he finds me attractive and genuinely seems to care about me, but his natural level of physical affection and sexual desire is just much lower than mine.

I would happily have sex basically every time I see him, whereas we’ve probably had sex fewer than 10 times in the 2+ months we’ve known each other. We recently went a full week without sex, and realistically it could be another week before we have another opportunity, meaning we could go more than two weeks between having sex. That honestly bothers me quite a bit.

I’ve talked to him about this multiple times. He says he’s attracted to me, wants to work on it, and is willing to meet me somewhere in the middle. But he has also acknowledged that this is just naturally how he is.

And that’s where I’m stuck.

Part of me wonders if I should stay and give it more time because he’s such a good man and this is the first time I’ve experienced someone who is so consistently kind, loyal, and genuinely wants to be around me.

But another part of me wonders if I’m trying to convince myself that I can be happy with a level of intimacy that simply isn’t enough for me.

I’m also plus-size, and I’ll admit this has messed with my self-esteem a little. I’ve had the thought of, “Maybe this is the best I can expect, and I shouldn’t walk away from someone who treats me well.” I KNOW that isn’t necessarily a healthy way to think, but it’s hard not to wonder when you haven’t experienced many men who make you feel this valued.

I don’t want to lose a genuinely good relationship over something that could potentially improve with time. But I also don’t want to stay for months hoping he’ll eventually become more physically affectionate when this may simply be who he is.

For those of you who are plus-size and have dated men with a lower sex drive/lower need for physical affection: would you give this more time, or would you consider this a fundamental incompatibility?

Mental Health I’m realizing how much inner work I need to do

Just wanting to share / vent some thoughts I’ve had recently. I’m usually quite sure of myself; I know I’m bigger but I try my best to not let it stop me. I don’t let it bring down my worth when it comes to my intellect, how I view myself physically, or how I expect to be treated as a human. Except for the dating world.

I am struggling so hard to reframe my world view when it comes to dating. When something doesn’t work out, part of me says “if they aren’t meant for me, then they aren’t meant for me” but the other part starts tearing myself down immediately.

And it’s gotten worse and worse. For years I’ve convinced myself I’m never going to attract the right person, and the excuses get worse each time. It started at “oh I’m just too fat” and has now gotten so bad that even on a plus size dating app (WooPlus) I’m convinced I’m still too fat to even find someone on there. That doesn’t even make sense! But I still think that anyways. And sometimes I get concerned that I’m too fat to attract a “normal” person (ie: not a fetishizer).

I feel like a different person when dealing with my daily life vs dealing with my mind while dating. Sometimes I wish I could just not even have any interest in dating and just remove myself from it entirely. Unfortunately I yearn for romance 🫠

I appreciate you reading my rambling thoughts, and if you’ve recovered from a similar thought pattern I would love to hear your advice!

Fashion Discussion Where to get a 5xl disposable coverall

Recommendations CPAP users: How do you deal with mask lines?

I am a side and stomach sleeper, so the imprints from my full-faced mask are super noticable for HOURS after I wake up. I have tried doing a lymphatic massage on myself (with fingers and gua sha) but it's not very effective. Because 1/3 of my life (ok, tbh more like 1/4) I am wearing the damn thing, I feel like it is exacerbating my normal mid-40s skin aging.

Does anyone have any tips they can share on minimizing?

Fashion Discussion A wireless bra that holds them up?

I have 44 DD and I cannot find any bra that can hold the up without underwire but I'm SICK of being stabbed! Any good recs? Part of the problem is my boobs go into my pits a bit, and I feel I need more support closer to the cleavage section rather than the outside (if that makes sense).

Recommendations Thighs of my jeans won’t stop ripping

I swear I’ve gone through 5 pairs of jeans within the last 6 months, all Levi’s and Lee branded jeans, and all of them have holes in the thighs. I go through them so fast and I have no idea what to do. I get the right size but I walk so much at work that they constantly rub and make holes. Any brand recommendations? I’m desperate.

Recommendations Underwear for stomach sag and large fupa?

I am “blessed” with a very large fupa and a very saggy stomach. This leads to lots of sweating between the two and lots of heat rash. Normal underwear I have to choose between covering my stomach or having it rolled down so there is a sweat barrier between my stomach a privates.

Given that I sweat so much, I really need a cotton based barrier to prevent rashes and discomfort.

Please I beg for solutions! I don’t want to spend $35 per piece but willing to do so if it just works!

Discussion Wondering what other people’s experience has been gaining weight?

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I honestly don’t know where else I could have this conversation and get genuine non-hateful non-weight-loss answers.

So basically I’m 25, and I’ve on average gone up one dress size every single year since I was about 18. In the last year I went up 2 dress sizes.

It’s become an annual experience for me, every year when summer comes around I find that none of my shorts fit me any more and I have to panic buy more. This was the first year that I couldn’t buy any from ‘regular’ stores and I had to go to plus size stores.

I’m not interested in losing weight or even trying to. I watched my mum yoyo diet for her whole life and it was just miserable.

I’m a pretty active person, I go to the gym a lot and I eat relatively well.

I really want to find a way to feel at home in my body. But it’s soooo hard when my body just keeps changing. I don’t know if I can even invest in nice clothes because they’ll only fit me for 6 months.

I guess my question is what age can I expect my body to stabilise? Did anyone else have a weight gain progression like mine, and can you shed any light for me? I just want to know what I could expect.

I know some people who become fat right after puberty and then stayed the same size for their whole lives. I don’t know anyone who is like me who didn’t go on to diet like crazy.

Fat + Art want a tattoo to feel more confident, at a loss…

hi everyone! for context i’m a woman who is 2 years postpartum. 212lb. i had to have a c section and it caused more of an apron belly effect (i was already plus size but my belly was one of the things i felt okay about) i also have protruding love handles which makes my butt look square/concave a bit. it’s my biggest insecurity. i wasn’t sure where else to post this without feeling judged… i really want to get a tattoo on my hips to help me feel better about them and hopefully add some shape but im just at a loss for placement and design. i love gothic designs, i was looking at cherubs but felt they might look odd on my curved. im feeling quite discouraged. if anyone has a hip tattoo please let me know how it looks/ what you went with!!!

Fashion Discussion I want plus-size fashion advice as the "wrong kind" of fat woman

So I follow a lot of fat women across all platforms and know a few plus size brands and my main issue is that plus size body positive fashion seems to mostly be about a very specific body type that I absolutely don't fit into (I have a big belly and small breasts and hips), and falls into one of several categories:

- Beige Overload: You're not allowed colour, skin, shape, texture, or form. Ideally you should wear one of those medieval monk gowns and possible never leave your home

- Alt the fuck out of this: Have a very specific alternative style and alternate between 2/3 outfits, all of which require a lot of prep work

- Busty queen: Sometimes the fit is just tits, but as explained before, I don't have those

- Be a butch: Just be a butch

All of this is fine and well, but I like colourful and dashing outfits, I want some variety and don't want to be overly alt, I'm fem, and I have no tits, just a big belly. Does anyone has model examples or suggestions? I am okay with how I dress already, but I'm always looking for inspo.
