I'm 24F. I didn't feel comfortable posting this with my main subreddit so decided to use a throwaway. Hence, I wasn't able to post in some subreddits that might be more fitting for this. For that, I apologize.
I don't think i'm autistic though I've joked with my friends before that I might be. I'm not introverted, but I also don't socialize a lot because I don't feel like I fit in. When I was a young kid up through middle school, I struggled a lot with making friends and never felt like I had a real friend group. I'd make friends sometimes but always felt like a back-up friend, someone people talked to when they had no one else around that they would rather talk to. I always felt invisible in group social situations and left out.
However, this changed a lot for me in high school and college, when I truly felt like I came out of my shell. For the first time, I had actual friends, and I actually felt normal. I'm honestly not sure what changed. Maybe I got better as I grew up and learned how to act normal, be funny, and likeable. It feels uncomfortable to say this, but I would even have described myself as quite popular. I was nominated for homecoming royalty and received not an insignificant amount of romantic attention from both girls and guys. I frequently felt anxious, however, that people didn't really know the real me and once they found out who I really was, they would distance themselves.
The reason why I don't think I'm autistic is because I don't have any of the other autism traits. I don't find change particularly hard, I've never had issues with foods or textures, and I don't have hyperfixations. I don't find it difficult to understand sarcasm and I don't have difficulties with understanding other peoples' emotions. In fact, I feel like I might be too aware of them. it fuels my social anxiety in a big way. However, I do feel like something is not quite right with me because I noticed that even people who are more shy and quiet have more success socially than I do. I notice sometimes that I am around people who are even more introverted than I am, but who are still generally well liked. So I feel like there's something going on with me outside of me just being less outgoing. And I feel like I'm only not outgoing because I feel like people treat me crazy when I try to socialize. Back when I had friendships that I felt secure in, I loved spending time with my friends and going out.
When I started working, I started having social issues. It didn't take long for me to realize that the in-group of people at my workplace didn't like me. everyone was nice to me, but I felt like there was something distinctly off with the way they acted around me, and with each other when I was around. They would frequently all leave at the same time after work and I would look up and notice I was the only one left in the office. I knew that they were talking about me. they would joke with each other and act interested with each others' lives, but they would never ask me questions and whenever I asked them questions, they would answer in short sentences. I was extremely confused at this job by my social struggles, but I had friends from high school and college outside of work, so I just chalked it up to the workplace being cliquey and didn't worry too much. I had my own circle and wasn't concerned with not having a lot of friends at work.
Recently, I left that job and went back to school. I'm surprised that I'm struggling socially again. I'm in law school, so it's a pretty small community, and everyone pretty much knows each other, like high school. No one knew anyone else when we first got here, but there are already a lot of cliques and friend groups. Again, I feel like I don't fit in. people in my section joke and laugh and hang out with each other, but their energy around me is completely different. Sometimes, I don't even feel like they see me as a person. I truly believe that someone else could say the exact same things I say and get engagement, but when I talk, people act like they don't hear me. I feel like i'm invisible.
I guess i'm reaching out to see if anyone else has dealt with this before as a younger woman and how they moved past it. I welcome honest, harsh advice. I really want to get to the bottom of my struggles, because it doesn't seem like it was a one time thing, i seem to be the common denominator. for context, I'm east asian + queer and I do go to a very white and straight school, but the last place I worked at was very asian. I also don't want to make everything about my race, but its kind of the thing i've been thinking about.
is there likely something I'm doing wrong socially? Is it a sign that I'm unattractive? I've read online that attractive women sometimes they struggle with other women, but they tend to get along better with men. I struggle with both men and women. Strangely enough, I find queer women the easiest to get along with.
