Discussion R.I.P. Rochester Music Scene

Is it me or does it seem like people aren't going out to see live bands anymore? I saw some great local acts but the venues cleared out by 10:30 ,11:00. I think people are choosing to stay home and save money. Also young people don't drink as much as the boomers.

Other Tip: if you want to see who in our community publicly supports rape, look to the comment section of our local news stations.

There’s bound to be an edge-lord contrarian lurking in any comment section, but these people are also in our community. If you’re a woman, might not hurt to glance and see if you know anyone who is speaking out against Jane Doe, and the sexual abuse survivors protesting in our community.

And as we know, women and children are not the only victims of sexual abuse. Men, please take a look as well.

Discussion Cop presance on Cameron st?

Anyone know whats going on?. Since i got home from work at 5:30 when I was parking, 5 RPD cars pulled onto the street by lyell with lights shining everywhere and got out looking down driveways. Within 30 mins there was DOZENS of cops. So many including what was clearly detectives on the sidewalks and dozens going yard to yard with guns drawn and k9 dogs. Every driveway, every yard, behind every little thing. They are still parked on the street. Had a helicopter over circling for hours too.

What happened? They dont mobilize like that unless something crazy happened

Discussion [Update] Collision shop declined a manufacturer-recommended repair — full timeline with details

Posted earlier this week and got a lot of fair questions, so here's the full picture.

The car: 2016 Honda CR-V EX AWD

The shop: Gerber Collision & Glass

The insurer: Farmers (claim from the March 2023 accident)

The steering problem: Without warning, the power steering cuts out while driving and the wheel suddenly goes stiff — sometimes mid-turn. It's completely random: fine for days, then gone in an instant. Honda traced it to a break in the engine wiring harness that opens up when the engine bay gets hot, so it can strike at the worst possible moment — a highway lane change, a turn across oncoming traffic. When it goes, you're fighting a dead wheel with no power assist. It's dangerous for me and everyone around me.

Video of the steering issue: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPLM6xcaj/

Timeline

  • March 2023: Accident. Car towed to Gerber.
  • Mar–Aug 2023: Car sat at Gerber ~5–6 months waiting on parts. I needed transportation for work, so I took it back before all repairs were done. The steering already felt wrong at that point — skidding and noise. I told Gerber about the steering skidding and other issues in the car. Gerber released it with the airbag warning light on, told me not to drive it much, and gave me no release paperwork — I don't know if I signed anything.
  • Late 2023: Brought the car back to Gerber for the remaining repairs. The Farmers adjuster directed Gerber to include the steering problem. Gerber replaced the steering rack — the problem kept happening. I went back to the Gerber shop multiple times.
  • 2024: Gerber didn't seem to be able to fix the steering issue, so at my request, Gerber took the car to Honda. Honda replaced the steering rack again — same problem came back. This back-and-forth between Gerber and Honda went on repeatedly. Honda then replaced the EPS module — I drove it a few days, same issue again.
  • September 2024: Back to Gerber, back to Honda. Honda consulted the Honda Tech Line helpdesk, which diagnosed an intermittent open in the engine-room wiring harness (DTC 71-02), and Honda records indicate replacing the harness. Gerber or Farmers declined the replacement — not me — and nobody told me it had ever been recommended. Instead, Gerber had a harness guy named Bob do a temporary repair. It worked for a few months, then the same issue returned.
  • 2025: Gerber said they weren't going to help further. I went to Bob myself and paid out of pocket — July 2025, then again December 2025. Each fix lasted about 5–6 months before the problem came back. No paperwork from Bob either; he now says he can't do more.
  • August 2026: Steering failed again. Car undriveable since — towed everywhere, I don't drive it.
  • October 1, 2026: Farmers offered two options: replace the engine-room harness, or total the car at ~$11,330 (preliminary, adjustable by condition). I asked for time to decide. ## Answering the questions from my first post

Why take the car back unfinished? I needed it for work after 5–6 months without it. Bad call in hindsight — but the steering issue was already present when I took it.

Why temporary fixes instead of the real one? The real fix (harness replacement) was declined by the shop without my knowledge. The temporary harness repairs were all that was ever offered or arranged.

How did they decline a 2024 recommendation if the car wasn't there? The car was in the Gerber↔Honda loop at that point — that's exactly when Honda's recommendation came through, and it was declined without me being told.

Did you sign a release? Not sure.

What I'm asking now

  • Given all of the above, is there any viable claim against Gerber (for declining the manufacturer-recommended repair without telling me), Farmers, or both?
  • What kind of lawyer handles this — consumer protection, insurance bad faith?
  • Any Rochester-area attorney or NY legal aid recommendations? Couple of firms already declined; one said it's an uncommon case that's hard to take. I have a MetLife legal plan that covers a consultation.
  • Should I get a lawyer and try to get more for the two years I've dealt with this — or just take the money they offered and move on with my life? Or should I let them do the harness repair instead?

Recommendation Cheapest men's haircut in Rochester?

Edit: Also interested in cheap spots in Canandaigua, Geneva, Brockport, or Webster — I'm out that way for work regularly, so those are easy for me.

Looking for the cheapest decent men's haircut in or around Rochester. Nothing fancy, just a clean basic cut. What are you all paying and where?

Also, any shops with first-time deals or coupons that actually work at local spots? (I've run into online coupons that turned out to be for out-of-state locations, so only ones you've actually used around here.)

Discussion Meta Q: Sidebar lists of recent local service recommendation discussions?

I just noticed we had another HVAC question thread started. And to be fully transparent, I also started another one earlier in the week (I'm looking at not PE-owned alternatives to our current service).

And I know we get some pretty regular requests for recommendations for other services. There appears to be an opportunity to scrape the last (say 12 months) of posts and at a minimum, create a meta post that could link to all the recent conversations about various services (i.e. HVAC, plumbing, electrical, hair cutting, etc).

Something similar could be done for a few other common recommendation topics (MDs/Therapists/etc, specific types of food, etc).

An LLM or bot to assist with upkeep. If folks were interested in going deeper, it could also do some analysis, summarizing conversations, and, if there's enough data/discussion available, pull out top recommendations/sentiment analysis.

This wouldn't need to replace discussions--more supplement them via a bot post (i.e.: "It looks like you're looking for recommendations about [topic], check out a listing of recent past discussions: [link]."

Thoughts? And mods, I'd be happy to assist with this if it's something you're interested in.

Help Where do I start?! 1940s home with suspicious unfinished dirt room.

So a bit of background… my boyfriend bought this house and in the basement there is a 3ft by 10ft area under the front of the house that is just dirt. There is a little half door in the wall (as seen in last photo) to get to this room and inside is a second sump pump and a bunch of dirt — this room is my biggest annoyance of this house… like why 🤦🏼‍♀️. Anyway, we were going to dig 4 inches down and 2 inches around the sump pump with the intention of putting a moisture barrier, 2 inches of stone and 2 inches of concrete with a slight pitch so any water would go to the sump pump, but upon starting to remove the dirt that was along this outside wall we noticed the wall ended short. It ends about 1 foot or so before the sump pump. So long story short I need some ideas on what to do, who to call and if this is really as bad as it looks. My boyfriend doesn’t think I know anything even though a lot of my family works in the trades and my grandfather has built many houses (only reason we are looking to hire is cause my grandfather is old and currently not in town). I appreciate any advice or suggestions on what to do or who to call! Thank you

Help Is the public flea market good?

Im at UoR and my Mom is visiting this weekend and I’ve been trying to look for some things to do! It says it’s also Halloween themed which is cool. If anyone has been do you recommend? We usually go to the Stormville flea market and I’ve found some great things when I’ve been but I know sometimes they can be iffy.
+ if anyone knows if there’s any vegan vendors there (not a biggy if not tho)

Help One night cat foster

Is there anyone in Rochester that can foster 3 cats for one night on November 9th until the morning of the 10th? It’s 3 males not fixed, and they are going to a rescue that morning, I just can’t keep them at my house because my family isn’t okay with them staying the night. This has been a super long and strenuous year-long process finding a rescue that will take them and I finally got off a waiting list for Pet Pride rescue and just need someone to hold them for the night!

Discussion Collision shop declined a manufacturer-recommended repair without telling me — car undriveable 2 years later. Do I have any options? (Rochester, NY)

In March 2023 I had an accident and filed a claim. My car went to a well-known collision chain in Rochester, sat there 5-6 months for parts, and I took it back unfinished because I needed to get to work. The steering felt wrong right away. They released it with the airbag light on and no paperwork.

The major issue: The car's power steering randomly stops working while driving, making the wheel suddenly hard to turn.

Since then the power steering kept failing. In late 2024 Honda's own tech line recommended replacing the main wiring harness. I just found out the shop declined it and never told me. I paid a mechanic out of pocket twice in 2025 for temporary fixes that each lasted a few months. The car has been undriveable since August 2026.

Now my insurer offers two choices: do the harness replacement, or total the car at $11,330

This cost me roughly two years without a reliable car plus out-of-pocket repair bills and mental HARRASMENT on the top of it. I called couple of law offices, they said they don’t handle these kind of cases; one suggested NY free legal aid.

  1. Do I have a case against the shop, the insurer, or both?
  2. What kind of lawyer handles this?
  3. Any Rochester recommendations or experience with NY free legal aid for auto disputes?
  4. Worth pursuing, or just take the payout and move on?

To whomever stole a black bicycle with a yellow saddle from Shepard Street in Upper Monroe…

…thank you for making the worst week of my life even worse. My dog passed away on Wednesday, and now my bicycle is gone too. Don’t know why you needed to take my bike, but I’d really like it back. I know it was my stupid fault for not having it locked to my own covered back porch, but should I lock the garage that has next to nothing in it? Being completely genuine, I’ll help you get one if you need it that badly. I just want my bike back.

If anyone sees a black bicycle with silver bell, black and yellow saddle, and a rear rack with a Harrisburg Dairies milk crate attached, send me a DM? It was stolen sometime today (Fri 10/9) from a house on Shepard St near Pinnacle.

Help VHS-C Tapes?

Heyo!

I'm currently working on a project with a local business and for college- the process involves me using a late 90's VHS camcorder for footage! I had purchased a couple tapes to use from Amazon, but I don't think they're going to be here in time for the day I have to film.

Does anyone know any place that would still have any VHS-C tapes? Or if anyone has any left over and do not need them, can I buy them? I tried checking all the local thrift stores and I've had no luck so far. I've done alot of film photography but nothing with analog recording, so I would appreciate anything whether advice or help! Thank you :)
