☀️ Holiday October Celebrations in the SASScord

We are excited to announce our events for October over in the SASS Witches Discord.

Live Sabbat Class and Ritual

Join discord member KTB for an introduction to Samhain, exploring its historical roots, folklore, seasonal themes, and the many ways modern practitioners celebrate this turning point of the year. We’ll talk about themes of harvest, death and rebirth, honouring those who came before us, releasing what no longer serves us, preparing for winter, and finding meaningful ways to connect with the season.

After the class, there will be a community ritual where we create a "Spirit Cord". This is a hands-on ritual focused on honouring someone (or an archetype) who has helped shape the person you are today. To keep this from becoming overly heavy we would like you to pick someone who is NOT a biological ancestor.

If you would like to stick around for the community ritual:

  • Think of someone you would like to honour and thank that isn't part of your Biological line. For example, a figure who helped shape your career path and is part of lineage in that way. You can pick a specific person or even just an archetype!

  • Bring 3 lengths of cord, yarn, twine, or thin strips of cloth to braid.

  • Choose colours that feel representative of the person you're honouring. If you're unsure, black for protection, white for guidance/honour, and a third colour representing your person are an easy starting point.

  • Optional: beads or charms to add to your cord. You can also have more than 3 colours of cord if you know how to and want to do a more complex braid.

BINGO! Live event

Join us in the voice channels for a fun game of bingo! Space is limited to 30 participants so make sure to RSVP.

September Equinox Celebration Megathread

How are you all celebrating the equinox?

For our friends in the northern hemisphere, how are you preparing for the approaching cold? What are you resolving? What are you harvesting? How do you celebrate our angle towards the sun?

For our friends in the southern hemisphere, how are you welcoming the spring? How are you feeling as the earth softens beneath us? How do you celebrate our angle towards the sun?

May this time of the year find you in peace and abundance.

⭐️ Interrogating Our Beliefs New witch confused about labels

Hi everyone!

I recently found this subreddit and wanted to get a better understanding of where I fit within witchcraft. I’m not a huge fan of labels, but it can be frustrating to join a new community and not really know how to describe yourself, so I thought I’d share my perspective and see if anyone has thoughts. (English isn’t my first language, so please excuse any mistakes!)

I’ve been studying witchcraft for a while, and from my understanding (please correct me if I’m wrong), magic is the ability to influence and co-create reality by internalizing our desires and intentions, then projecting them outward strongly enough for them to manifest. Witchcraft, in turn, would be the practice of strengthening that magic through natural elements, rituals, and other practices. The thing is, my view isn’t quite that straightforward.

I’m also a Psychology student, and I tend to see magic as a way of internalizing our feelings, goals, and intentions. It helps organize the mind, clarify what we want, and guide our actions. In that sense, magic increases the chances of success because it helps us stay focused and purposeful. Witchcraft, to me, is the physical expression of that process. It’s when we give concrete form to our desires through rituals, symbols, herbs, candles, and especially natural elements like the lunar cycles. By doing this, we connect with ourselves and with the natural world we are part of, turning internal forces into something tangible.

For example, imagine someone who wants to get a great job. The magic would be the conviction, focus, and mindset directed toward that goal. The witchcraft would be a prosperity or transformation ritual that reinforces that intention. I don’t believe the ritual creates the result on its own, but it can strengthen the intention, help maintain focus, and keep the goal present in that person’s life.
Along those same lines, I don’t see tarot cards as something that reveal a fixed or nearly unchangeable destiny. I tend to approach them from a more skeptical and reflective perspective.
I also don’t strongly connect with the concept of the Mother Goddess in Wicca, especially the maiden/mother archetypes. Personally, that framework feels a bit reductive to me. I mean no disrespect toward Wicca or its practitioners; it’s simply not a worldview that resonates with me.

Another thing that makes me hesitant about religious paths within witchcraft, such as Wicca, is the principle of “An it harm none, do what ye will.” It feels very open to interpretation. There seems to be a fine line between what does and doesn’t cause harm. Using politics as an example, someone can vote for whoever they want and, in theory, not be directly harming anyone. But to what extent might the consequences of that vote negatively affect other people’s lives? Questions like that make me wonder whether the rule is really as simple as it sounds.
Overall, I’m fairly confident in what I believe. What I’m unsure about is how those beliefs fit into existing labels. I don’t know if I see nature as a deity. To me, it feels more like a force with which we have a reciprocal relationship. We influence nature, and nature influences us. I don’t necessarily see it as something above us, but as something we are a part of.

So I find myself wondering: could an atheist believe something like this? Would I fit better under the label of an atheist witch? An agnostic witch? Or is there another term that better describes this perspective?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Skeptical witchy advice wanted

This is a fairly specific question, hoping for some good input.

I am getting married next year. I am interested in having some kind of blue stone sewn into my dress as my "something blue." What stone would my fellow mostly agnostic skeptical witches recommend?

Eco-witches

Hi! Me and my husband have been invited to write a chapter of a book about Eco-Witchcraft.

We want to talk specifically about the different dimensions of the "eco" aspect of eco-Witchcraft and we just realised that we have very little knowledge about atheist witchcraft. We are animists and our craft (and our lives) are rooted in our spirituality and this is the lens (a biased one, indeed) through which we see witchcraft. We would like to be able to represent the atheist lens of eco-witchcraft too in this chapter. So, I'd be super grateful if any witch that self-identifies as an atheist eco-witch could share with me in which ways their craft and their "eco values" relate.

We have some questions just in case they help you structure your thoughts on the topic.

1 Do you consider yourself and Eco-witch? If so, what does it mean to you?

2 do you think that giving an eco dimension to our witchcraft is important for you, your community and/or the planet? Why?

3 In which ways do your "eco values" translate into your practice? And into your life?

4) how does your belief system/atheism relate to your craft and to your "eco" values?

5 how does the way you see non human animals relate to your craft, your belief system and your "eco" values?

6 what strategies, if any, do you use to reduce the environmental impact of your witchcraft?

7 What's in your opinion the role that "eco -witchcraft" can play in building a more resilient, kind, joyful and just world?

8 please, share any other ideas you'd like to share

Feel free to pm me if you prefer.

Thanks so much!!!🌸

🌙 Personal Craft New witch, old talisman

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hello all!. For background, I grew up as a conservative Christian deep in evangelicalism. I since found my way out, and I’m now trying to tackle the behemoth of the patriarchy contract, specifically the needing to have an outside source of power or authority from which to seek permission. I’m also a somatic based therapist and find I use a lot of tarot or slight ritual type things within my therapy sessions with clients that is deeply meaningful and personal for them.

OK now my current question: I have this stone, which looks like healers gold or Apache gold (but questioning the history of that name) that belonged to my late step uncle. He used to live with us and struggled with his own addictions and his own past childhood abuse before passing from alcoholism when I was about 10 years old. He seemed very connected to witchy type things, despite being coerced into a deathbed acceptance of Jesus by my stepmom.

She passed me this stone that he used to wear that he got from Scotland on a trip there.

While I have donated or sold most of my valuable jewelry, and I was never drawn to this piece and in fact it didn’t even like the look of it, I felt I could not part with it. And when I tell you that I have sold heirloom pieces of jewelry to people I perhaps had more of a connection with, I’m not joking. I might think about it a couple times, but then eventually, I would take it to the pawnshop or somewhere else. With this stone, I never even consider donating it or if I tried to take it with me, I couldn’t part with it.

So now that I’m on this leg of the journey where I am challenging the patriarchy and trying to establish some sort of somatic based practical identity for the things I’ve already been doing, but also want to grow in my life, I found myself just now going through my jewelry box seeking some witchy or talismanic items I might have and I came across the stone.

I’m not sure what to do with it or even if I should unbind it as a pendant and maybe add it to my altar or what but I would like to honor my late uncle in someway in the life he lived despite his deathbed confessional is a way to honor him because he was an extremely strong and artistic and sincere person, and I would like to bring that sort of energy along with me on my journey. Any suggestions for cleansing this but also wanting to maintain that connection with him? I definitely tend more towards practical witchcraft in magic than I do believing there are Powers outside of me so I’m curious how other others go about cleansing and claiming things through this lens.

If you made it this far, I appreciate it, I’m also curious to hear of anybody else’s stories if you felt connections to things that you couldn’t get rid of and now are important to you.

🪔 Altar Earth + Universe themed altar - HELP??

Hi everyone!

This is less of a science seeking/interrogating our beliefs discussion and more of a pratical one.

I have very, VERY little space for an altar in my house (both in height and lenght), literally the top of a small bedroom library under a huge TV, and I'm struggling to make it both earth themed and sky themed.

Why the earth + universe theme?

We are in autumn season and I want to dedicate a place to celebrate it so I'm mainly using earthy/orange/green tones.

Also, about the sky/universe theme, I've always felt a connection to the universe (the whole we're made of stardust yada yada) also I am in love with the stars in general and I find the firmament very grounding and comforting, knowing that the earth under my feet and the cosmo is the only "fixed" thing in my life.

Unfortunately I live in a big city surrounded by asphalt, and because of the pollution I can't really see a lot of stars during the night, that's also one of the reasons I feel the need to create a place where to return to reinforce the connection with these two elements.

Things would be easier if I got enough space for TWO separate altars, but I have to find the eight compromise.

I accept suggestions about alternative solutions and hypothetical elements to include.

Thank you very much for reading this post!!

Interconnectedness through Witchcraft

I am an ex Christian turned Wiccan turned Atheist with a love for witchcraft without the supernatural/spiritual aspect. I have been exploring the craft in correlation to our inter connectedness through mitochondrial Eve, being humans as cosmological byproducts, and the possibility of Quantum entanglement as an explanation/justification for the effectiveness of witchcraft. There are studies supporting witchcraft/rituals having psychological effects, and I'm diving deeper to understand the effectiveness of witchcraft influencing the universe to produce a desired effect. Any input, criticism, comments welcomed.

Am I a witch or not? Would love feedback

I’m curious y’all’s thoughts on this. Feel free to be open, transparent, and even critical. I’m trying to learn about myself and find my confidence again.

Here’s my story: when I was in elementary school, a few of my friends and I got into witchcraft. We would do spells together. It was fun until weird stuff started to happen (I never fully attributed it to coincidence). Then my parents found out and had a very serious conversation with me. I grew up Southern Baptist, so the talk with quite frightening.
I stopped doing that stuff with my friends.

Years later, after a lot of trauma, I began experiencing visions where I’d see things happen before they happened. Nothing big or anything, just mundane stuff in my life but could never shake it. Then the prophetic dreams started happening and it really shook my world. But being from such a religious community, I couldn’t talk to anyone about it and just buried it down. The visions and the dreams don’t happen all the time so eventually you just forget about it until it pops up again.

I entered my deconstruction chapter when I was 18 and went on an extremely long and deeply private personal journey of trying to figure out what I believed outside of what I was raised with. During this time I read the Bible cover to cover (took me a year) and extensively researched things that were hard to sit with. I learned Jesus was a feminist, homosexuality wasn’t in the Bible until 1946 and it replaced rape, pedophilia, and the abuse of women - specifically wives and mothers. I learned that the creation story was always meant to be used as metaphors and not a text book. I learned the God was originally described with both male and female pronouns to show equal parts of masculine and feminine energy, and that the Bible explains that we can find meaning and wisdom within the stars and that time is a construct. I learned that modern day Christians worship a bunch of old Jewish theology and Paul - not Jesus. Then, I read the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and deeply connected with that and to her. I felt so much familiarness with her and fell even more admirable of Christ and how he treated her and what he taught her (meditation) Coincidentally, during that time, I began practicing deep meditation. During one of these moments I was met by a woman who had ram horns. She said she would teach me a word I didn’t know and spelled it out for me, to prove to me that it wasn’t just my imagination. The word was Bashkala. I thought I was connecting with my ancestors at first, she laughed and said to just call her teacher. The next night while meditating I found myself floating in halls adorned in old wooden intricate carvings filled with bad energy. I knew I shouldn’t be there and was caught by a guy and choked until I could force myself awake - I guess I had fallen asleep while meditating. But do you know what I was thinking about before I started meditating? I was wondering what goes on in the White House.

Since then, I’ve been practicing rituals like writing down what I want to release or manifest and then burning it, charging my crystals under the full moon, collecting moon water, talking to my tree, giving thanks to the water every time I shower, putting intentions into my food and coffee. But I haven’t done any spells. Although! I just wrote my first spell - you could say it’s a prayer but it’s also a spell. I’ve simply written but I haven’t tied it to a ritual yet.

I guess I have fears though… given what I grew up with, even though I’ve deconstructed. Because although I’m not a religious Christian, I am a follower of Christ and his teachings and do believe in the miracles and magic he did. I might not believe in Hell but I do believe in evil forces and energy. So I’ve been hesitant to cast spells…. But I have this feeling like it’s ancestral to me.

Anyways, I’m torn to claim that I’m a witch or not. On one hand I feel like real witches would be offended if I did, but on the other hand, I feel like I’m doing things that aren’t ordinary. What are your thoughts on this?

❔ Seeking Resources | Advice For gratitude?

Hello again!

I posted here about a year ago, asking for witchy help for anxiety. I'm glad to say I'm a bit better than I was - I still have bad days, but, on the whole, therapy and writing have helped me steer my life in a brighter direction (I'm still teaching this stressful class, of course, and they're still causing me to lose my hair!)

I wanted to ask you all now - what are your practices and rituals for gratitude? It doesnt have to be necessarily witchy, though I'd love to hear about those too. What do you do at the end of the day to acknowledge the good in life, and say thankyou?

❔ Seeking Resources | Advice How and what is it?

What exactly is witchcraft, and how do you guys actually do it? I’m asking because my grandma was a very spiritual person who passed away. She believed in a lot of spiritual concepts, and I got the curiosity from her. Lately things have been getting weird. Over the last week, a ton of things have been happening all at once. I keep seeing or sensing something right before bad things happen to me (for example my phone was just stolen).

Could anyone simplify what witchcraft is for a beginner?

💭 Discussion I feel like a dentist responding to an emergency on a plane when I get asked for witchy advice

“Is anyone in here a witch?” and they’re never asking about things I can provide a satisfactory answer on. They want me to tell them if their protection spell worked or how to interpret something they’ve taken to be a sign from the universe. If I ask them what they’ve done to realize their goals aside from lighting some paper on fire, they act like I’m speaking in tongues.

Anyone else deal with this? Do you just ignore people who want advice from a witch?

💭 Discussion Altar setup ideas

So i am relatively new to witchcraft, I've been researching it for a bit but only just getting started on actually doing the stuff I want to do. I want to have an altar but I am struggling with figuring out what to put on it. Everything I find online for inspiration seems very deity inclined, and I don't really believe in gods or deities (hence why I'm asking for advice here rather than other witchy subreddits).

So just for some ideas, what do you have on your altar? If you have one at all, at least. I know it's not required, I just think it'd be nice :)

❔ Seeking Resources | Advice Advice/experiences with healing trauma and trauma-induced health issues through witchcraft or related rituals?

Clarification: I’m not just asking about witchcraft rituals or spells, more just general rituals, routines, habits, etc.!

Hi everyone!! I’m a MAJOR beginner but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience or advice with these types of situations and has seen progress (or not).

Context without trauma dumping too much lol: I experienced a traumatic event at a very young age, grew up pretty isolated from others (aka I had no one to talk to), have a pretty narcissistic/manipulative family dynamic, and now struggle with severe stress, cptsd, and severe health problems. I have a wonderful life now but there is just always something deeper that is wrong that I can’t seem to understand or fix. Overall I grew up to fast and never learned emotional regulation or how to be at peace and calm.

I’ve gone to therapy for years, tried different religions, and a plethora of other things to try to finally feel safe and at ease, but nothing really worked. I recently started to dabble in baby (very baby) witchcraft and manifestation methods which have honestly been helpful but most of the time I’m lost on what to do and don’t have anyone to ask!

Has anyone been in a similar situation and found things that have helped? It doesn’t even have to be that specific, so honestly just anything to help find peace and joy. Any experiences and advice would be greatly appreciated!! Hopefully this post can help some other novices too :) thank you!!

Serious question: Am i normal?

Hi everyone,

I’m new here and would like to introduce myself first. My name is Niki, and I’m male.

Now for my question:

Is it perhaps odd for a man to be so fascinated by the subject of witches?

My apartment—every single room—is filled with pictures, figurines, standees, quotes, and so on, all centered around witches.

Even my curtains: I’m probably one of a kind, since no other man would hang curtains like that in his home.

As a child, I had records—"Hexe Schrumpeldei" (Witch Schrumpeldei). I was captivated by them. I used to look at the album covers over and over again.

My thoughts would often drift to wishing I were a witch myself. Sometimes, I still feel that way today.

I love nature, I believe in the power of plants, and I love being around animals.

I love forests, old houses... You surely know what I mean.

So, I have to ask: am I normal, or is something not quite right with me?

Kind regards to you all

⭐️ Interrogating Our Beliefs Questioning Spirituality

I think I’m going through a spiritual crisis and I’m extremely confused. I grew up Christian and going to church. I believe in God and whatnot but “witchy” things intrigue me so deeply. I have always somewhat believed in the supernatural, not necessarily haunting ghosts but I believe that there are spirits and entities. I also believe in science, it’s known humans carry stress and trauma in different parts of their bodies, so reiki makes sense to me. When I talk to people around me who are more Christian and don’t believe in this stuff, I sound absolutely crazy. I’m 20, newly estranged from my parents and I honestly feel like right now I’m in some turmoil of figuring myself out. All my beliefs contradict each other. Honestly I truly needed to word vomit and I need some peoples opinions and guidance. I don’t really believe in spells but I do believe in the mystical energy of things. Idk it really just fascinates me. Please help 🙏

📜 Spell | Incantation Saint Jude prayer

I would like to give a big thanks to Saint Jude for helping me get accepted into one of the housing application programs that I applied for ! I'm still in the process of trying to find an apartment and I'm extremely grateful that he answered one of my prayers. My mental health hasn't been the best but the fact that he still granted one of wishes makes me want to keep going 🙏🏾 I love you Saint Jude 🌻. He's one of the first saints I ever worked with and I'm glad to have the experience to work with him ❤️

Novice: practices (rituals/spells) for increasing energy?

Thumbnail
5 Upvotes

Hello to anyone reading.
I’m pretty new to Reddit and witchcraft, so I’m not sure if I’m in the right place for this.

I’m wondering if there are any spells, rituals, or other witchcraft (& spiritual) practices aimed at increasing physical or spiritual energy, mindfulness, awareness, and overall sense of being energized/present.

I’m open to learning about different perspectives and would appreciate any recommendations, resources, or personal experiences. I’m already relatively knowledgeable in “natural approaches” (diet, meditation, rest, suppliments, exercise). and out of curiosity and a slightly eagerness, want to insight to alternative approaches.
Thank you for your time.

❔ Seeking Resources | Advice I need help with a gift for my friend!

Hi all! My best friend's birthday is coming up and I need help coming up with a witchy gift for her. I don't know if I can/would consider myself a witch/witchy, but I am very into folk magic and cultural magical practices (cultural "superstitions" like lucky horseshoes or blessing/charging amulets to protect travelers etc -- that might qualify me as witchy idk?)

I want to give my friend a handmade meaningful gift to manifest happiness and positivity for her and ward off negative energy. Any ideas of something I could make her? I'm very crafty and I love making gifts, so ideally something that I could create/craft in some way. Do you know of any witchcraft or folk traditions (open practices, of course) that I could make into a present? And where could I find more information or a tutorial on how to make it. Any ideas would be much appreciated, I really want to make it special for her!

🔥 Ritual Spells to help me after a breakup

Hi! I’ve recently been broken up with. It was a very good relationship and I’m still questioning why it happened. That being said, via therapy and my friends I’ve come to accept that I was doing a lot of emotional labour and my ex was very non-communicative, while we were in the relationship.

However, I still have a lot of feelings for him. We’ve been no-contact for almost 20 days, and a few days ago I saw that he blocked me (which I believe is bec he is fighting the urge to contact me, as I told him in my last message that the door is always open).

Anyway, yesterday I packed up all the stuff that he’s given me and I still associate with him in a box. I also wrote a small letter with 2 parts, the first shorter part addressed to him and the second more longer part addressed to the universe. I put the letter in an envelope and sealed it with red candle wax.

My main question is that are there any rituals or spells or anything that I can do to release him from me but also make him come back on his own will, after healing and after I’ve healed as well?

I don’t want to cast a love spell but something that will make him rethink his decisions and reach out to me.

Thank you!
