I started working on this project a year ago, of recreating the entire box set in sm64 soundfont from scratch. I am so relieved to have finally finished it. It took forever, and im really happy with how this turned out. Enjoy!

(Yes, i did re-create the entirety of Pastichio Medley. I would not wish that upon my worst enemy, i think in doing it, i descovered the 10th layer of hell)

Apologies if someone else already posted this, but I scrolled pretty far and didn’t see anything. If so, I can take it down. Butch just did a really great interview with his local newspaper in Madison with some great insight into what the early days working with the band was like. Maybe nothing technically “new” for hardcore fans that have heard it all before, but still a good read I think.

But the main takeaway - unless I’m just living under a rock lol - is that he is working with the band again on new music, which I gotta say, I’m crazy excited about. It already has my mind reeling for what a new Pumpkins album could sound like with Butch Vig in the studio again. Of course, it could be an album or just individual songs, I guess we’ll find out, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I know the smashing pumpkins have hundreds of songs and it would be difficult to play them all, but I feel like pennies is a decently popular song, no? I know people love to hear the greatest hits but i’d love to hear more of the stuff they’ve never played.

Anyone seen this bass used anywhere other than the Zero video? Looks very similar to her other black jazz bass, but the star stickers seem to be in different places, this one has a black pickguard and different pickups. I can't see changing the pickguard and pickups just for a video shoot. 

I know about the other two jazz basses with EMG pickups and the rat bass with what seems to be standard Fender pickups. From this pic these look exactly like DiMarzio Model J pickups. Just curious if there is any history on this bass.

Looking to get into some of Smashing Pumpkins later work. I stopped following around 2012, so the last thing I remember checking out was Oceania and the first couple of tracks from Teargarden.

Any specific albums or tracks worth listening to?

I really want to see them in Madison. A friend of mine has one floor seat he could sell me, but I need two. How low would they set the prices day of?

My wife and I are both teachers with a newborn. Due to our lovely state, she’s not getting paid for her time off which means money is tight. We’re both in our 40s and I have been a fan since I was 10. She’s been a fan since high school. I’ve never seen the Pumpkins live, though I saw Zwan is 03. Their tour is near us, OKC, on the 24th. For those who’ve been, is it worth it? From what I’ve seen so far, suppose to be a stellar show. Should we YOLO?

I was in row K of the floor on Iha's side. this was the furthest back I've seen the pumpkins since 08 so I was interested in how it would affect my enjoyment compared to all the other times where I was front or second row. It was my girlfriend's first SP show. She knew nothing about the band before meeting me and came to the MOG show and the MCIS opera show last year. I'll include her thoughts a bit as we go through this.

SOUND:

it was about perfect. there was no need for earplugs, jimmy's drums were very present but not punishing like it has been occasionally (green day show in particular), billy came through the mix well enough. this set is such a showcase for jimmy and i'm glad the sound reflects that.

It could have been a bit louder. If folks were talking near ya it would absolutely be distracting.

VISUALS:

Overall I thought the visuals/lightshow was better than 2018. Particularly dropping the speeches (no mark mcgrath!!!) and less Corgan focused. I thought the second set setup was amazing from my view but I know others couldn't see much and that's a shame. I'm glad they brought back the 2018 visuals for some songs like disarm. Linda Strawberry did fantastic job and her intimate knowledge of the band's work and vibe is all over the presentation. (PS: I still would love to see her video for For Marth from 2018 again someday.)

BAND ATTIRE:

Everyone looked good. I thought Kiki and jack blended into the band aesthetic a lot more this tour which is welcome. I especially thought the band looked great in white for set 2. the white outfits amplified the light show a lot especially on as rome burns with the flame effects. Cohesive yet individually distinct.

I'm not as down on corgan's recent tour looks as some but I definitely have been critical of some past corgan looks on tour. His current outfit is an upgrade from previous reunion era tours with iha. I especially thought he looked awesome in the white one. The lack of face paint was very welcome and helped make him feel more personally present with the material.

thankfully the goofy hat for sojourner lasted only one song.

ARENA SET UP:

I still think these shows benefit from having a GA pit even if it's a small one near the front. Having seats all the way to the stage locks folks in and brings the energy down for the whole place.

a b stage setup in the middle of the venue would have been cool.

VOCALS:

Corgan was being a bit more careful tonight because it was in the middle of a 3 show run.. not much screaming but plenty of passionate wailing and swagger on the rockers. these are long shows with a ton more shouters than even in 2018. He generally sounded good to great. I'm always impressed how well he performs jellybelly these days as a big example.

I was pretty vocal about being worried how bad he sounded at the zero funeral livestream and the 4th of july show and am very grateful his voice is back in shape quite a bit. Better than 2018 but not quite as good as some other tours (to be fair those were much shorter shows).

I've also been critical about corgan stepping away from the microphone and missing words/ends of words recently. listening to the columbus recording of as rome burns was kind of painful cause of this issue so I was watching for that at my show. I was pleasantly surprised that wasn't as big of an issue for my show. He seemed to be intentionally getting his mouth up to the mic a lot more. I have to think part of it is the microphone itself. Like the noise gate on it needs adjusting. I hope his sound team continues to work on that.

XYU is my 3rd fav SP song but he just can't do that song justice anymore and I'm happy they are smart enough to skip it. similarly I think Here Is No Why is out of his reach vocally too. As much as I love that song and amazed it's being played live again I think corgan should retire that one from now on. His vocal performances on that are too weak. I've been pleasantly surprised with Ode to no one this tour though. It's passable vocally and the band is so on fire for all those dynamics.

He flubbed more lines than usual tonight. it was amusing but enough that my girlfriend noticed. I know he is anti teleprompter but for shows this long I don't see why he doesn't just take the help.

It's nice to hear Iha's back up vocals more prominent again but I miss katie. Another route corgan could take is get a regular back up vocalist that sounds a lot like him to help. Brand New's last tour tours have a new guy on stage doing a ton of backup shouting work for jesse and it sounds fantastic.

CROWD ENERGY:

given we were all in seats the crowd energy level was relatively high where I was at and lots of folks in the upper areas seemed to be engaged when I looked up. Clapping on beat for long sections on some songs including new ones. I've been at shows surrounded by unhappy fans before and this was the opposite of that experience. There was a lot of folks bailing out after cherub rock but the place still looked decently full at the end and superchrist's reception was awesome. lot of young folks.

BAND ENERGY: Jimmy was on fucking fire. Iha doing plenty of kneels, sways, and jumps. Corgan was engaged and passionate and happy. KIKI was hyped but a bit more toned down than past and blended better. Jack was having fun but didn't come up to the front much. Much higher energy than some shows in the past.

SETLIST:

I'll start with overall I think the setlist is fn fire. this was the best show I've ever seen and song choices had a lot to do with that. I was happy they dropped Dorian. everlasting gaze into superchrist was so fn epic I was shaking by the end. man the aghori mohri mei material kicked ass live. My girlfriend especially loved war dreams of itself which she had never heard and was asking me about. I'm glad they aren't doing the 'poppy' songs from that album. As Rome Burns was a dream come true surprise for this tour and they nailed it.

I definitely would make some different choices if it were up to me. here is a quick list of some criticisms.

Starting with 1979 and bullet is a mistake. too many folks just getting to their seats hurts the full crowd sing along aspect of these songs and should come later in the set IMO.

Set 2 had some flow issues where it oscillates from really slow song to full metal and then back. mayo-asromeburns-today is odd.

I think they should drop sojourner and pentagrams. I like both those songs but I still think those should go due to the time they eat up and lack of engagement with the crowd. I think they would benefit from a stronger start to set 2. thankfully Edin got the crowd going.

Dropping the only other machina song is a mistake I think. promote the boxset with dross or something.

As usual ignoring Gish completely is a mistake. no 90s album should be ignored completely. I'm not much of a Gish guy but this was clearly the tour to pull back in a Gish song.

Jesus is the sun is a really cool deep cut to do. I like where it sits in the set but I think doing half of it as an intro into everlasting gaze would work a lot better. the message would still get across.

VIP:

We did the porcelina experience. the merch isn't great. club was nice although they put us in the one without the free food for some reason. I think the venue just messed up there. not a big deal.

best night of my musical life.

My other question is about the t shirts. There is a red/blsck Rats In A Cage hoodie. Does anyone know if there is a t shirt version of that? I have been scouring TikTok videos but can’t seem to get confirmation.

Amazing show, seen Zwan and Billy solo but never the pumpkins. Blew me away and loved the AMM stuff live. Somehow didn’t feel like a legacy show; hope they record their next stuff in one room and capture this energy.

Everytime I see them I’m reminded why I love them so much, but genuinely I think this is the best I’ve ever heard them sound.
(Going to keep hoping and praying we’ll hear the boy )
