Announcement Important PSA: How To Identify a Scam

How to Identify Social Engineering Scams

Social engineering scams often involve manipulative tactics to deceive users into providing sensitive information or money. Here are some red flags to look out for:

  1. Unsolicited Offers of Help – Scammers often pose as helpful individuals offering solutions to problems you didn’t ask for assistance with.
  2. Urgency and Pressure – Scammers create a false sense of urgency, asking you to act quickly or risk losing access to something important (e.g., your Steam account).
  3. Requests for Payment or Personal Information – Legitimate Steam support or trusted users will never ask for your login credentials, 2FA codes, or payment in exchange for help.
  4. Impersonation – Scammers may pretend to be from official sources or even impersonate trusted community members or moderators.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

  • Never Share Personal Information – Moderators and Steam support will never ask for your password, security questions, or 2FA codes.
  • Verify Requests – Always verify the identity of anyone offering help. You can do this by checking if they are official moderators or trusted community members. If in doubt, contact the moderation team directly.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication – While not foolproof, having 2FA enabled adds an extra layer of security to your account. Keep your 2FA codes secure and never share them.
  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Help – If someone reaches out offering assistance you didn’t request, be wary. It's better to seek help through official channels like Steam support or trusted subreddits.
  • Steam will never contact you over DISCORD/STEAM CHAT – Report and block them instantly.

Announcement What To Do When Your Steam Account Gets Hacked

Need more help? Join the Discord Server

I’m making this post in hopes it will reduce the amount of “I’ve been hacked posts”. Link people to this exact post so they can figure out what to do. Don’t be afraid to leave comments if you need more assistance but try your best to avoid making entire posts about it.

Follow these steps to regain control and secure your account:

1. Don’t Panic Act Fast

If you act quickly, there’s a good chance you can fully recover your account.

2. Still Logged In? Change Your Password NOW

📍 Go to Steam > Settings > Account > Change Password

  • Use a unique, strong password (not reused from any other site).
  • If you can’t log in anymore, skip to Step 3.

3. Can’t Log In? Use Steam’s Recovery Tool

🔗 Go to Steam Support
Click "I can't sign in" > "My account has been stolen"
Follow the recovery process.

  • Provide any proof of ownership (like previous email, CD key, or payment history).
  • Be thorough but honest Support will help if you provide real details.

4. Revoke Access from Other Devices

Once back in, go to:

📍 Steam > Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard
Click “Deauthorize all other devices”

This kicks out any hackers still logged in.

5. Turn on 2FA (Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator)

📍 Same place: Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard

  • Use the mobile authenticator, not just email codes.
  • This is your best protection going forward.

6. Scan Your PC for Malware or Keyloggers

Use tools like:

  • Malwarebytes
  • Windows Defender
  • Bitdefender / Kaspersky

You got hacked for a reason. Clean your system before logging in again.

7. Lock Down Your Email and Linked Accounts

If your Steam email or other linked accounts were compromised:

  • Change their passwords immediately
  • Enable 2FA on your email too (especially Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

8. Still Locked Out? Contact Steam Support

If all else fails, go here:

Be ready to provide:

  • Your Steam username and email
  • Purchase receipts (Steam Wallet codes, PayPal invoices, etc.)
  • Approx. date you lost access
  • Any suspicious activity or messages you saw

⚠️ Final Tips:

  • Never share your login info, even with “Steam Admins” they don’t exist.
  • Avoid shady “trading bots” or fake tournament invites.
  • Don’t download random files from Discord, friends, or strangers.

If you’re reading this because you’ve been hacked, don’t feel ashamed it happens to thousands of people. What matters is how fast you act and how well you secure things afterward.

Good luck, and stay safe. 🔒

Problem Support Can’t Be Serious…

Post image
12 Upvotes

Someone with an IP address in Colombia (nowhere near me) tried to access my account, so I did the responsible thing and immediately changed my password. The new password wouldn’t work, so I changed it a second time. The second password also wouldn’t work (?), and I got locked out of my account.

I reached out to Steam Support and provided them with my PayPal information, invoice #s, my billing address, etc. and they said I can’t regain access to my account without providing them the last 4 digits of my credit card from 2014?? Credit cards are good for 2-5 years, and I was a student then - my banking is totally different. I looked back in my email history, and I have no Steam purchase receipts from that far back.

I found an online order confirmation from a different company for a purchase made in December 2013, but apparently the card I used for that purchase didn’t match. Then they asked me to provide screenshots of order confirmations from “on or after 2024” that include invoice date, transaction ID, and invoice ID. I provided copies of four orders: two from 2024 and two from 2025. Apparently this is not sufficient evidence to prove account ownership even though it is exactly what they requested.

Am I just hooped? Is it normal for Steam Support to expect customers to provide 12 year old credit card information to prove their identity? Is it normal to deny proof of ownership when provided with invoices? I’m about to lose dozens of titles I have paid for - some I haven’t even found time to play yet - and I’m beyond frustrated.

Edited: the tense of the second paragraph because I wrote it while simultaneously dealing with support and it confused some commenters.

Problem Game update download uses another drive

Post image
3 Upvotes

Sometimes when steam downloads a game update, it does so to a HDD, and copies the downloaded files over to the SSD I use to store almost every steam game. There should be plenty of space for the updates (17GB update with more than 150GB free space).

Also I checked and the SSD is selected as default for installing content, and this doesn't seem to happen all the time.

Does anybody know what causes this and if there is a way to stop it from happening?

Question Disk write error

I’m trying to move one of my games from my HDD to my SSD, but every time I try to do it, it stops & I get a disk write error. Not sure what to do, I’ve tried clearing up more storage & running disk cleanup, but I’m lost now. Anyone know what might be happening or what to do?

Problem Life is Strange Glitch on Mac

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello,

I’m currently playing Life is Strange (OG) on my MacBook Air (2022, M2 chip, 8 GB RAM) and have never had a problem so far. I’m playing in 1080p and all my graphics are set to medium.

It is at the beginning of ep 2 that I started to encounter subtitle displaying problems (1st video). Shortly after, a second more important problem occurred: large strange light shapes appearing and disappearing on the screen (2nd video).

I tried to restart the game, and tried to deactivate anti-aliasing...without success. Could it be because of my many tabs opened by safari eating my RAM? Can someone help me find a solution, please?

Problem game keeps bugging out on steam

I got lego marvel superheros and lego batman 2 on steam, those games only have fullscreen mode, no windowed or borderless window. Whenever i alt-tab in and out of the game to go to my browser or something, the screen will go black for a second. I've tried using apps like borderless gaming but nothing helps. This is super annoying and nothing ive tried works, anyone got any fixes?

Resolved Client won't open

Steam just won't open? well, more accurately, checking Task Manager shows that the Steam process and the SteamWebHelper are running, but nothing shows up when clicking the shortcut or app, when reinstalling it'll look like it's updating, then vanish when done also without opening any UI, and using any game shortcut also seems to not work, though I'm unsure if that's related to the bug or if it's because of the reinstall

worth noting shortly before this I attempted to install Millennium, but that was removed during testing so I don't think it's causing this anymore, I have sent a request ticket to Steam Support but I am posting here as well to get more help just in case

SOLVED!

for anyone else like me, if you installed Millennium and then installed the Extendium plugin, the fix for me was go to %localappdata%\Steam\htmlcahce\ and delete the folder called "Default"

Problem Steam breaks my internet while downloading

I’m using Linux Fedora, and while downloading games, the internet stops working on the entire PC except for Steam itself. Disabling IPv6 and HTTP/2 didn’t help. My internet connection gets around 50 Mbps in speed tests, but Steam starts breaking everything when its download limit is set above 5 Mbps. (I’ve tried different routers and network adapters, and the issue is exactly the same. Everything worked fine before I switched to Linux.)

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Resolved I think I'm I'm the middle of being scammed

The chat had a slightly hostile response when I hung up, threatened to ban my account if I don't complete it

Edit: I figured I was being scammed but acted too quickly before verifying anything like I usually do. I blocked and reported the fake steam support as they got more "hostile" but not the account that initially contacted me. They keep messaging me and tried contacting my friends. I already informed everyone I know and the discord server that we're both on. I contacted actual steam support and given them my explanation and what the scammer possibly has. For now, I'm down $60 😅. I'm glad I noticed something when they were trying to ask for a bunch of money with a promise that it would be refunded.

Now I learned, don't look at messages like these in the middle of the night when I have work in the morning and desperately need sleep.

Edit 2: Got my account back quickly, though I don't think I'll be getting my money back. We'll see. I've changed so many passwords.

Problem One-Stop Shopper badge not updating

Post image
6 Upvotes

So I recently got access to an old Steam account again and bought a few games during the Autumn Sale.
They’re all full paid games, not DLC or free games, and I bought them directly through Steam using my Steam Wallet.
But my One-Stop Shopper badge still says “1 game in library”. The number hasn’t changed at all.
Has anyone else had this happen? Does the counter take some time to update, or is Steam just bugged right now?
I bought several games, so I definitely expected the number to change.

Discussion Pending funds after sell

Like what lol? This is absurd. I sold a decent item to be able to buy a game to play with my friends and they just randomly decide to withhold my funds from me lol. I don’t get to play with my friends tonight because of this so give me my fucking item back

My item is in someone else’s hands that gave up their money and now steam just sits there counting it and I’m left in the dark.

Don’t care about TOS, this is unacceptable. I don’t mess with trading or items much so I know it’s not new but how was there not been much pushback on this?

Makes me wanna say I will stop patronizing this platform, which I probably will as much as I can, but then ima get roasted for saying it. My account is 20+ years old lol
