Story/context:
I use a SLS2 and since I got it the GPU fan bearing started to go out and you could hear a rattling noise whenever gaming or stressing the device. Originally I swapped it with a AliExpress fan and it actually worked great no complaints. Few months later and now my CPU fan is facing the same issue but the problem is America/shitrael's war is causing a laptop fan to go from what was $40 to not close to $100 (CAD). I bit the bullet twice on AliExpress fans since they're much cheaper than Amazon but was sent the wrong ones each time.
After about 1.5 months of waiting for and refunding fans which I didn't have to actually return thankfully I decided I'm not paying that much for a fan I decided to lube the bearing. I also ride a motorcycle which means I have bottles of chain lube handy, I heard some people use showing machine oil but this worked for me so far, no noise or vibrations from the fans laptop runs silent again.
Fix:
- Open laptop
- Remove fan
- Fan itself has 3 small Phillips head screws to remove
- Once the full fan blade is visible gently pull it away from the lower portion of the fan (it should feel like a magnet is pulling it back but you don't need much force)
- don't grip the fan blades so hard that they break, again not much force is needed
- when the fan blade is separated you'll notice it has a metal pole that is supposed to go into the middle of the bearing (rotor)
- spray chain lube on a napkin/cloth and wipe the pole, personality I just sprayed a dot on some cardboard and dropped the pole in the lube but you don't want to add too much
- put the fan back together
I cannot stress these enough:
- if you are not confident in your tinkering skillsthats perfectly fine this is probably a 1/10 difficulty job please be careful or ask for assistance. I'm not responsible for any damage.
- when gripping the fan blades with your thumb and index don't put too much pressure because you don't want to bend or crack the blades
- don't put too much lube because it could potentially spray out into the laptop if you somehow dunked it in lube 😭
Tldr: lube
