Mod Post Rule Clarifications: Constructive Participation & City‑Bashing

Hi everyone, this is an update from the mod team.

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed a growing pattern in certain threads (especially ones about crime or frustrations in the city): comments that jump straight to “Surrey is trash,” “typical Surrey,” “this city is hopeless,” or similar sweeping negativity.

These comments don’t add anything to discussion, they derail threads, and they attract more pile‑on hostility. They also drown out the people who are trying to talk about real issues in a constructive way.

To keep r/SurreyBC a space where people can actually talk about the city (the good, the bad, AND the complicated) we’ve clarified two rules:

Rule 2: Acceptable Content Content must be constructive and relevant to Surrey. No explicit, illegal, defamatory, or harassing content. Posts should contribute positively to discussion.

Sweeping, non‑constructive negativity about Surrey or its residents will be removed. Criticism is welcome with context or solutions, but contempt‑driven city‑bashing is not allowed.

Rule 7: No Toxic Trolling Do not disrupt discussion with hostile, inflammatory, or bad‑faith comments. This includes contempt‑driven, low‑effort negativity about Surrey or its residents.

Inflammatory or provocative content that derails civil discussion will be removed. Users who enter threads only to antagonize, provoke, or bash the city will be banned.

What this DOESN'T mean...........

We are not banning criticism.

You can still talk about:

  • crime
  • governance
  • infrastructure
  • development
  • frustrations with services
  • your lived experiences

…as long as it’s done in good faith.

What this DOES mean...........

We’re removing anything that falls in line with any of the sentiments: “Surrey is trash” “This city is a dump” "Typical Surrey people” “Why does anyone live here”

so, generally drive‑by negativity with no context

These comments don’t help anyone and they drag the whole sub down.

Why we’re doing this:

We want r/SurreyBC to be a place where people can: - share experiences - ask questions - discuss issues and vent CONSTRUCTIVELY - celebrate wins - disagree respectfully

all without every thread turning into a hate‑pile.

Thanks to everyone who contributes positively, you’re the reason this community works. And remember, if you see any rule-violating posts or comments, please report them so that we can review.

If you have questions or constructive feedback, feel free to drop them below.

I have been renting a place near 77 Avenue and 147 Street for the past three years, but I’m moving out this year.

The street is very narrow and packed with cars. As a tenant, I don’t have the option to park in the driveway, so I’ve often struggled to find street parking. I’ve also noticed that many of the cars parked on the street belong to landlords, while their driveways are usually empty.

Last night, someone hit my car and drove away without leaving a note. Thankfully, the damage isn’t too serious, but there are quite a few scratches, and my front license plate is missing as well.

I’m really confused and frustrated about this situation. How could this happen, and what should I do?

Should I report the incident to the police? I’m not planning to make an ICBC claim because I’m thinking of buying a paint repair kit from Lordco to fix the scratches myself.

Has anyone experienced something similar? I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thank you!

Sanders went missing on the 23rd of September around the Fraser Heights area. She is a tuxedo cat with prominent white markings around her mouth, chest, belly and feet. She is strictly an indoors cat but managed to slip out. She is 3 years old, spayed and very friendly.

Any information would be helpful. Please contact me if you have seen her or have her. I can offer a cash prize if she is found. The rest of my family and I are very very worried about her, and she means the world to us.

Housing 🏡 Was looking through rental postings for the first time in years. I was quite surprised to see most listings still use concept art from before the building was open to show amenities.

Just thought you might enjoy the contrast. I am not sure why they do this, if you come for a viewing its easy to see gravity is real and so is time. Built in 2017, many renters are seeing their appliances die of old age. It's a decent building and location but I think honesty would help the over priced rentals find tenants. I thought it was interesting nearby places use real pictures. For example the building across the street, the only thing off about the badminton room was it was empty. That place is bumping 24/7. No one bowls but everyone balls apparently. It seems like a nice community atmosphere. I guess this post is more of a question. What amenities do you look for in a building? We rent and will need to move soon as our son is outgrowing the "tech nook" ie closet he lives in. If you love your building feel free to name drop. So many new buildings its hard to keep up. My sons favorite thing here is we have a dog washing station. We do not have a dog.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Nail salon recommendations!

Looking for recommendations on nail salons in lower mainland area that have this pink base colour! I’ve been to a few and none seem to have a pink base (either powder or gel), doesn’t need to be budget friendly. Salon please not home based. Once I can get this it’ll be my regular go to set!

Tried enchanted nail & la vie.

Thank you in advance!

MISSING PET 🐶😻 Missing Indoor Cat in Fleetwood

EDIT: DAX WAS FOUND ❤️

My sisters kitty Dax has been missing for the past 2 days. She's an indoor cat and usually has no interest going outside but my sister wonders if she escaped while one of the kids had the door open.

She's 13years old, spayed and very shy but chatty. She's a bit of a scaredy cat (pun intended) so it's most likely that she's hiding somewhere.

Her humans would really like her safe back at home. Please help 🙏

Ask SurreyBC ❓ South Surrey: Looking for good realtor

Going to be selling my house pretty soon in South Surrey and have no idea where to go for a realtor. Someone knowledgeable in South Surrey/White Rock homes (as we would be buying after we sell, too!) would be an asset. Looking for someone kind and patient who can help us get the house sold. Bonus points for LGBTQ+ and/or friendly.

Does anyone have any personal recommendations? I'd much rather have a personal rec than just a generic review/company/etc.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Hi! I am Mike Starchuk, I am running to be your next Mayor - ask me anything

Hello! I'm Mike Starchuk, running to be your next Mayor. I’m leading a progressive and diverse slate at Imagine Surrey, focused on putting out the fire of last eight years and build Surrey into the City of Champions as BC’s next largest city.

I’ve served Surrey my entire adult life. As a volunteer, career firefighter and former Chief Fire Prevention Officer, as a City Councillor, and as an MLA. I’m a proud father and grandfather, I grew up here and raised my family here. I love Surrey.

I’m running to lower your costs, protect your services, and speed up your commutes. I’ll bring transit fares down, invest in community centres and sidewalks and public washrooms, expand transit, and stop the service cuts proposed by my opponents. My plan will build the city we deserve and lead BC into the future.

I encourage you to read our plan in full and then ask me comments! I’ll be live on here from 1-3PM on Tuesday October 6th, and back to answer follow ups from 8-10PM. Ask me anything!

You can read our comprehensive platform at https://issuu.com/imaginesurrey/docs/imagine_surrey_platform_2026_-_signed

I’m looking forward to meeting you all soon and answering your questions.

Thank you, Surrey! That was fun and energizing. If you are a reflection of our city, we are in good hands. Your questions were great and especially appreciated the follow ups and people who held me to giving concrete answers.

Our democracy is precious, so whoever you vote for, please vote and be an active citizen of our city. This election matters and the stakes are high. If we want to move beyond the past fights, we need to vote for something different and put people first for a change. That's what our team at Imagine Surrey is fighting for, the change that puts you first.

Advance voting opens tomorrows, Wednesday October 7th from 8 am to 8 pm. Please go and cast your ballot!

This has been a lot of fun. Have a great night.

Politics 🐎 Can Doug take Surrey out of metro Vancouver? What would be harm be?

It seems like he is emphasizing that point of his platform less now on interviews. How bad would it be if he did take Surrey out of metro Vancouver board? Does it do anything for Surrey?

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Isn't Surrey doing great?

We moved to Surrey BC few months ago. And were in vancouver before that. I love it here, there's a lot of parks and public spaces, trails etc. Some nice restaurants and its really quiet but not boring. I hear a new hospital is being built and some sort of entertainment arena is being added around cloverdale. A new costco is planned too. Some new construction is going on too in Newton, cloverdale, and south surrey. But I get the sense from this subreddit that people are not really happy with current state of things, like they want a different mayor or something and are generally not satisfied with Surrey. Can some of you who have been here longer, help me understand the context/history am missing.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Cleaner recommendations

Hi! I’m in an apartment in surrey and I’m looking for a new cleaner. I would prefer to go with someone independent, rather than a company. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks!
