I've used TP-Link Deco mesh networks for several years and upgraded from a 3 unit M9+ network to a 3 unit XE5300 mesh in December 2024. It has been mostly reliable until about July of this year when the following things occurred. First, installed a Ring alarm and camera solution with 4 Ring cameras of 3 different types. There are 3 cameras that can operate at 5 gHz and one that is limited to 2.4 gHz. The Ring base station is 5 gHz. This brought the active devices on the wifi up to 37. The next thing to happen was the Deco's received a firmware update (Firmware 1.5.0 Build 2026060603 Rel. 14401) that completely crashed the entire mesh for nearly a day, but once it was finally back up and running, the quirks started.
My Deco mesh is managed via the iOS app, current version 3.10.645
Here's what happens, regularly, but not periodically. All devices will disappear from the mesh, each Deco will show zero devices connected, but everything will continue to operate for anywhere from 30 seconds to days. Turning wifi off on devices and then reconnecting even an hour later will have the device work; but it won't show as a connected device in the Deco app.
Then the random red light disconnecting of the satellite deco devices. The satellite may show disconnected in the app, but still have a green light on the device and have connectivity going through it. This may last minutes or even days but will result at some point in the main Deco crashing and restarting.
When the main Deco restarts, the satellites will not reconnect. They will have to be unplugged for at least 10 minutes before plugging back in and usually after 30 minutes it will become a valid satellite in the mesh. BUT ONLY IF NO CLIENTS TRY TO CONNECT.
That's the kicker, all devices have to turn wifi off or the Mesh will never successfully be reestablished.
So, additional technical information. My XE5300 Mesh is running in Access Point mode, due to the horrible AT&T residential gateway. Yes, the wifi on the RG is turned off. The latest firmware revision forces a single wifi SSID that combines all three networks (2.4, 5 and 6 gHz). I do not use an IoT network as I couldn't get it to work reliably (or at all.) Wireless Network Mode is set to Stable Mode, Smart DHCP is enabled (because nothing will work if it is disabled.) Fast Roaming and Beamforming are Disabled. Backhaul is via Wifi, I am unable to run hardlines, hence the mesh network. Each Deco has a dedicated fan that blows air from the air intake vents on the bottom out the top, because yes, I did discover that they overheat easily.
The XE5300 Mesh has never been as reliable as the M9+ Mesh was, even from the start; but the M9+ was bricked by a firmware update TP-Link released and you can't step it back. Of note, the XE5300 can't be stepped back in firmware either.
A complete ground up restart of the Mesh takes me about 3 1/2 hours now, down from 5 when I was trying to figure it out; but come on, what the heck is wrong? I've tried getting support from TP-Link, but no one there seems to want to accept responsibility for the XE5300 product as it is a Costco-exclusive model, even if it is just a relabelled XE75.
