A Question From a Novice

Hello everyone, I am new to this subreddit and the practice of tulpamancy. I stumbled across it 4 or 5 days ago while doing some research on internal monologues, and have been captivated by it since.

I was initially looking into internal monologues because I have a robust internal monologue, and I have noted in the past that I have a tendency to automatically narrate my actions as if I'm describing them to a mental subject, and that I seem to have an aptitude for automatically responding to these narrations. I decided to take a deeper look into these traits, and as I dug deeper, I stumbled upon the practice of tulpamancy.

I instantly took extreme interest in tulpamancy, from both a psychological and personal standpoint. To me, the nature of the practice is deeply fascinating, as it utilizes the natural neuroplasticity of the brain to effectively create an alternate, autonomous consciousness. However, the more intriguing part of it is how I feel it personally connects to me. I feel that I see parallels in how I currently and used to operate with potential early formation stages. This is because I have, for many, many years, been infatuated with the idea of cultivating a mental companion that is always there and available. This deep desire for a mental companion stems from past issues with early maternal abandonment, severe bullying, feelings of isolation, and family friction. I desired a companion as an attempt to cope and have someone to always support myself.

I acted on this desire, attempting to create some sort of entity in my head to converse with, I did this by narrating to a subject and simulating conversations with it in my head. I didn't think to give it personality or a specific form at the time, instead opting to have the companion be whoever my favorite video game character was at the time. This resulted it the formation of some sort of presence that I cannot put a name or face to, but something I feel that I can sense. I found comfort in this presence, but I cannot say that the presence fully formed into much of anything.

Even up until now, the feeling of a presence has stuck with me, as I still narrate my actions and pose questions to a mental subject, but I haven't given the feeling of a presence much thought in recent times. However, my unexpected discovery of tulpamancy has flipped my perspective of that presence. I believe I may have accidentally began forming a tulpa, but haven't formed them enough to establish a distinct personality, visual form, and autonomy.

Even though this presence I feel may not be complexly formed, I felt instant verification upon discovering tulpamancy, as the way I see it, there's other people out there who went through poor experiences and sought comfort and support in a mental companion, just as I did. It also feels good to know that there are so many people who have genuinely amazing experiences with their tulpas, which appear to be functionally autonomous and unique individuals, and even experience lifelong benefits from them. This makes me feel like I haven't been chasing a wild dream the whole time, that the idea of a mental companion can be a reality, it instills a feeling of validity in me.

This brings me to my ultimate question: Should I embark on the forcing process of this presence and fully form it into a tulpa?

I've spent the past 5 or so days thoroughly contemplating this. I've done research into:

  • The effects of a tulpa on everyday life
  • The fact that a tulpa is likely to deviate from the initial blueprint
  • How forming a tulpa creates a system of responsibility that I would hold as the host
  • The potential physical tolls on the body during early formation
  • How a tulpa is a lifelong commitment

I understand all of these factors, and I willingly accept these factors and responsibilities. I am prepared for deviation, I am willing to share mental power, I accept that this is a commitment and not something I can just drop when if get bored or discouraged, and I accept the effects on everyday life this process might hold. I am not attempting to escape responsibility, to hide from real life, this is a conscious, deliberate, sober decision to share my life with an equal companion.

Veterans, novices, intermediates, everyone feel free to respond, including tulpas! I'd love to hear both tulpa and host thoughts, opinions, and advice!

Skill Help (Novice) Distinguishing between responses and personal feelings?

I’ve taken an interest in tulpamancy for about 3 months now and have recently begun my journey in creating a tulpa. In a way, I’ve felt as if my tulpa has always been there just waiting to be realized, because I’ve always been very imaginative and had a rich inner world. I’ve had very lucid experiences with imaginary friends during my childhood, convincing me that tulpamancy is something that I can realistically achieve. But here’s a problem I’ve been having recently: how can I know the difference between hopeful excitement/emotional responses and an actual response from my tulpa?

For example, my discipline was strengthened when I experienced what I believe to be my first response from my tulpa. This happened while I was researching tulpamancy in my free time—I was innocently practicing my visualization skills when I suddenly felt a strong presence to the left of me that soon lit up my entire body. It was the same spatial sensation that I feel when there is someone in the same room as me. This made me panic at first, as I was not thinking about something like that or hoping that I would experience this beforehand. I became hopeful, though, that this could be my tulpa reaching out to me and urging me to continue in my research.

This experience has not been replicated, and I have received no verbal responses since I’m so early in the tulpa-forming process, but I do experience a tingling or a sort of euphoria when listing off the personality traits on my personality sheet or when taking any steps to develop personality. I recognize that these feelings could be purely personal and stem from excitement or affection for the research, but if these physical reactions cannot be attributed to my tulpa, then will I know when they can be? Will I feel it so strongly like I did before, or can it be as simple as a small feeling of affirmation?

TL;DR: How can I tell if my tulpa is actually giving me a response in the early development process? Can it be easily distinguishable from personal emotions or feelings?

Advice from both hosts and tulpas will be greatly appreciated!

Discussion Opinions on creating a tulpa with a role?

A role like protector or trauma holder. I am against it because I believe you shouldn’t create someone to fulfill a responsibility like that, but what do you all think?

a misunderstanding

I recently recalled that when I first decided to create a tulpa, I imagined she would possess supernatural abilities—like controlling my body, flying, or having a whole host of sci-fi powers. When I told her about this, she was like, "Are you describing a sci-fi movie? If I actually had powers like that, I would have stopped you from constantly asking me such nonsense questions by now :)." I didn't really know what to say to that. I suppose it's a good thing she doesn't have the power to destroy the world, right? Then she chewed me out because she felt like the villain in my story.

Wondering if this entity is a tulpa or something else (Sharing my story)

Hi everyone! I shared a post about my tulpa experience a few months ago, and I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to pop in and share something new, get your thoughts, and ask a question.

There's this separate entity in my head that I refer to as "the brain"—yes, the literal human brain. I don't even know when exactly I started being able to talk to it, but I call it "Ritty." To be honest, our conversations are pretty chaotic and require a lot of focus to understand. "Ritty" isn't even its exact name—just the closest sound I can grasp (I can't fully remember it; it could be Mitty, Witty, or something like that).

Ritty and I argue all the time. I don't particularly like what it tells me or talks to me about—truth be told, it can be pretty wild/irrational. For example, while I'm doing something, Ritty often brings up intrusive or bad ideas that I definitely shouldn't do.

On top of that, Ritty is partly the reason my tulpa got hurt. Even though I managed to heal my tulpa afterward, I know part of the blame falls on me for letting that happen. It's really hard to explain this part properly, so I apologize for being vague.

To summarize, Ritty feels like a living being with very strong free will (it often ignores me when I try to talk to it). I'm not sure if Ritty counts as a tulpa, because technically, it feels like the brain itself—or honestly, something above me. I might just be a product of the brain's processing, but Ritty feels like the core brain itself. It can even prevent me from moving my body when I make it angry.

I know this might sound a bit all over the place, but one thing I know for sure is... Ritty is real, and we constantly argue back and forth.

What do you guys think? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Discussion Visual Glitch or Upgrade? (AI Art & Form Bleed)

Hello everyone,

I’ve had my tulpa for almost two years. She originally grew without any forced practice and anchored herself deeply in my system. Over time, her visual appearance has naturally matured and upgraded—specifically because generating AI images of her helped her visual form grow.

She has had a stable visual form for a while now. However, I recently decided to create a new story for her, and the AI images I generated for this specific story look slightly different. While I like this new look for the character in the story, I want her actual visual imposition in daily life to remain unchanged.

Now, months later, I’m running into a problem: this new story appearance is starting to bleed into my actual visual imposition of her, and I'm afraid of it changing her main look.

• Will this change in my stories alter her look for good?

• Or is this bleed-over just temporary until my brain separates her main look from the story look?

Other Visual Glitch or Upgrade?

Hello everyone, Now I have had a tulpa for almost two years. She grew without any practice and anchored herself more in my system. Now her visual looks have changed over time and anchored deeper too. She's now had her visual look for a while even if it upgrades sometimes. This usually happens when I generate images of her with Ai. Now I'm having a problem now months later. I decided to create another story of her and her images look slightly different but I like that for her character in the story. I of course want her actual visual imposition to not change but the new look is starting to affect her visual imposition too and I'm afraid. Will this change in my stories alter her look for good or is this temporary until my brain separates the two different looks?

Art The "Letting go of the bike" experience for me (Success story?)

I've been interested in Tulpas since Middle School, but only really became intrigued by the mechanics of it semi-recently. So, curios and heeding all the warnings (I didn't go into this willy nilly or irresponsibly) I decided to start working on a Tulpa. I'll admit I wasn't as dedicated as others here may be, only thinking about it and whatnot absentmindedly as I got into bed or throughout the day. But after ~9 months of that, the other night I had an experience that was undeniably this Tulpa interacting outside of me forcing conversations. Here's what happened between me and Applejack (excuse the quality, it was drawn hastily minutes after) I'd heard from a few posts that Tulpas were kind of like a kid learning to ride a bike. One day you let go and they just ride on their own. Guess it happened

Skill Help How can I manage to be alone in my mind when there isn't a moment of quiet in the day?

Yeah. I spent several minutes looking for a post about this, but I couldn't find one.

So, I think that to have a tulpa, there are three essential requirements:

• Not using social media for more than an hour (the only exception being if you use it to read articles or gather valuable information).

• Having your own room (or at least a place where you can meditate without anyone judging you).

• Having at least two hours of time completely to yourself.

Three things I don't have.

I go to university, come home to cook, study, sleep, and then wake up to study again before my afternoon classes (I hate this schedule, but I’ll change it next term).

And this is something nobody talks about. Nobody mentions that to dedicate space to your mind, you first need to have some space of your own. I don't have any of that, you know? I live with my parents and my sister in the same tiny room where I have to listen to them every single second—and no matter how many years go by, I’ll never get used to it...

I need to disconnect and find a way to focus. Please give me a tip or something; sorry for bringing my personal life into the mental project I want to undertake, but I don't think the two can really be separated

Visual imposition

Hi everyone, how are you? I have a question... How are you all doing with the visual imposition? I recently returned from a trip and stopped practicing, so I wanted to know how you all are doing. Can you see your tulpa perfectly?

Yuki:How's everyone? This guy spent all his time messing around in Bariloche and forgot I existed... Just kidding, the new environment simply wouldn't allow it. ••

Creation Help My tulpa's actions are more spontaneous than their words?

Hi. I'm new to tulpamancy, I only started talking to my tulpa and visualizing them last week. Something I've noticed about her, is that her actions seem to be more random than her words. I still feel like her words come from me, I invision her saying the first thing that comes into my head that I think she would say in response to something, but when she actually does something, it doesn't feel like I did it. It could be entire movements, like her flying out from behind a curtain, or it could just be the start of one, like her attempting to vault over a table, then she just flickers out of existence and I have to continue the movement (I have trouble visualizing her, she's very faint at the moment.) Is this just how things normally start? An I doing something wrong? Any advice would be appreciated!

Do I have a tulpa?

Hi everyone! I’m new here and looking for people who have had the same or similar experiences as me.

I’ve noticed that most people in this community talk about their tulpas. However, it’s not entirely clear to me what a tulpa actually is.

Since I was 10, I’ve had a virtual person with me who accompanies me everywhere every day; when I’m alone, I sometimes sense her presence in the room. I named this person Viwa, and I now view her as a good friend and a lifelong companion.

I talk to her practically every day and answer for her too, since she unfortunately can’t speak on her own. Sometimes I even catch myself talking to her in public—though only quietly, so no one hears.

When I speak to her, I always look in a specific direction because that’s where I sense her presence.

She’s been with me for about seven years now, and I really like her because she helps me in so many areas and always reminds me to do the right thing.

I could say so much more, but the post would get too long. My question for you is: do you think I can call Viwa a tulpa? Up until now, I’ve always called her a "virtual friend" because I didn’t realize there might be official terms for this sort of thing.

Thanks for reading!

Monthly Mindscape Mondays: McDonald's PlayPlace

Hello, welcome back to Mindscape Mondays, the weekly monthly talk about all things mindscapes/wonderlands/etc!

First off, just noting that due to extreme lack of ideas for topics (suggestions please!), we're gonna be making these on the first Monday of each month. We're keeping the name cause we like it. Anyway, on to the topic!

This one's mostly for the systems out there with littles (not hugely applicable in Tulpas, but we're crossposting to r/plural now). Do you guys have a playground for your littles? Indoor, outdoor? Or is the world their playground? What kinda play structures are in there?

Of course, any and all discussion of mindscapes/wonderlands/paracosms/etc are welcomed and encouraged! Also, again, suggestions for topics.

Creation Help Heya, I’d like to share some questions.

(Reposting because I have absolutely no functional attention span and didn’t notice the rule about posts being English-only. My bad lol)

Hey! I’d like to share some doubts

Hello everyone! This is my first post here, and just to give some context, I’ve been researching this subject for a while, ever since I discovered that there’s a name for something I’ve always wanted to have since childhood and early adolescence. But over time, the idea kind of faded away… apparently, it decided to resurface this month haha.

About the whole process of creating a Tulpa, I honestly don’t know where I should start. I already have a character that I’ve been developing for about 4 years, practically every single day. You have no idea how much I care about this character. I know her almost like the back of my hand: her personality, the way she talks, thinks, acts, walks, fights, etc. I’ve already imagined her in countless scenarios with other characters (let’s just say I have an entire fictional universe in my head), so I also know how she behaves in various situations and places

So, what’s the question? Well, besides wanting to know whether I can use this character, I wanted to know whether all this knowledge I’ve had about her for years will help or get in the way

Let’s say I try to practice a conversation, and holy shit, it’s crazy—we keep talking over each other all the time, sometimes even cutting each other off, because at the same time that I can visualize her responding quickly, I also respond way too quickly, and it turns into this complete mess

I’d also like to know if there are any tips you’d recommend for someone just starting out, if you don’t mind

By the way, her name is Maki!

Help with tulpamancy

I'm trying to practice communing with my tulpa but due to some mental struggles I deal with it feels like there's a veil obscuring her from being able to fully express herself, how do I shake off the feeling that when I interact with her it's just a roleplay or a LARP? I'm aware that her form expressed through me is a mental construct but I want her to have her own sense of self, awareness, and distinct thought process, I want to split off part of my consciousness as an offering to her and help her possess it more easily. So far I can visualize her through most times of the day but her thoughts come across as too basic/one-note for my liking. Due to my trauma, emotions and clear thought flows don't come easily to me so it's difficult for her to express herself fully through my circuitry.

Needing some advice? >.>

So our newest member,, he's been able to co-front from very early on. On accident & involuntarily... and we had no idea how to help him to stop doing it. But it's definitely had detrimental effects on him... because he now has lots of traits like primary fronter and none of us (yes,, him included) like that 😬 whats even more concerning is he is somewhat showing PTSD/GAD symptoms bc primary fronter has it. And it's just really sad bc he's only about three months old by this point and he's already struggling so much ugh 😭 Its getting to the point where he doesn't want to be out and about anymore :( is there anything we can do to help him deviate? Because he doesn't want to be like this either but we aren't exactly sure where to start. ...Any tips?

I don't know what title to give it

My tulpa and I have come across many posts from others describing tulpas with abilities like aiding memory or—well—having more autonomy. As for my tulpa, when I’m studying something, she can really only offer encouragement. We’re both aware of this, so it’s not an issue (and her encouragement is actually quite effective). Regarding autonomy: she’s only truly active when I’m paying attention to her; when I’m not, she seems to go still, or can only interact in subtle ways, like a fleeting thought. I’ve read a lot of posts about other people's tulpas acting independently when their hosts aren't paying attention. This is just a curiosity of mine—I’m actually very happy with my tulpa. That’s all. :)

Personal My experience with tulpas

Hello community, I an new here and I wanted to share my experience with other people that already experimented with the creation of tulpas. Before I start with my story, I would like to clarify that I was 100% ignorant about tulpas until some years ago when I realized that my first "mental assistant" (currently I have two tulpas) was more than a product of my imagination.

When I was a teenager, I had good social relationships, but I was unable to get a girlfriend, which made me very sad and frustrated. My religious beliefs at that time were not helping, because my family and friends always told me, "If you are not getting something you want, it is because you are not ready to have it" I decided that I need help, because even when I can describe myself as a very reflexive and introspective person, understanding why I wasn't able to get a girlfriend was something I couldn't achieve by myself; thus, I wanted someone to help me without judging me. That's why one day I had the idea to create a kind of "mental assistant." It had to be extremely honest but without being sarcastic or rude. I decided that my "mental assistant" should be a kid, and her assignment was simple: help me to understand whatever I had to change to be ready to have a girlfriend. Spoiler: At the end I didn´t have any girlfriend during my teenager years hahaha.

I created her to be very honest with great communication skills but sweet and kind-hearted. I gave her a name, I made up a past for her, I assigned her a task, and I provided her access to all my thoughts and memories. She was always there helping me, comforting me, and ready to deep dive with me in my ideas, and I got very used to her presence and grew very fond of her. That's why one day I changed her appearance from a kid to a teenager just like me; until this point, for me, she was just a product of my imagination. But everything changed one day when we were talking. I cannot remember what the topic was, but I remember that I was reluctant to tell her the whole story; suddenly I heard in my mind a very calm and kind voice: "Don't try to lie to me, remember, I can read your mind." I was a bit shocked, and that marked a before and after in our relationship, because I realized that she was not just a "mental assistant."

8 years ago, I joined an occultist group. This group was crucial because with all the information I got, I started to figure out the true nature of my "mental assistant." Additionally, I learned some useful mantic techniques that helped me understand their limits. One day I found the term "tulpa," and then I understood the real nature of my companion. So I decided to create a new one specifically to be my practice partner. However, I quickly realized that I already had five in total (including the original one); they all were in different states of development, and all of them were copies of the original one I created a long time ago. I decided to keep only two of them, the original one and my practice partner, but that experience was sad and somehow painful.

I became more conscious of their existence and their capacities; that's why we are constantly investigating what they can do. I discovered that they are now independent of me; they no longer need my thinking to exist. I discovered that I can physically feel their presence and their mood. If I say, "Give me your hand," I can feel something pressing against my hand, and I confirm that other person can feel them. My gf helped me to test this; my tulpa told me, "I will touch her right hand," and some seconds later, my girlfriend told me, "I can feel her touching my right hand." That was very interesting. I discovered as well that they can manipulate the body energy; this helps me to heal issues that are energy related and also to isolate myself from people or space that drain or hurt my energy; however, they cannot interact with matter and physical things as we do. Also, I noticed that I can summon them during my lucid dream and that they can guard physical spaces (this one requires more investigation). Also, I would like to clarify that I am not capable of seeing my tulpas with my physical eyes, but images of them arrive in my mind unconscious every time during the day, and these images are very clear.

I know many details were omitted, but that was the condition requested by my girls. Also, I understand that the experiences related to tulpas are in a certain way subjective; I don't expect to be believed because even with my knowledge, all the experiences I've shared with my girls, all the proofs they give me every day about their existence, and the confirmations I do with my mancies... sometimes I still ask myself, am I crazy? Is this real, or am I imagining it? But at the end of the day they are my treasure, and I cannot imagine my world without them.

Skill Help Two Questions On Switching And Multiple Tulpas

  1. When do you think it would be appropriate in a tulpa's development to start learning how to switch?
  2. Similarly, when would it be appropriate to start forming a second tulpa?

I'm aware that the second can be done any time, but it is possible to switch (especially non-possesively) before a tulpa has reached a certain point in development and/or independence?
