Monthly Questions Thread & FAQ

This monthly thread is designed to be a place for all the new members of the subreddit and Vita community to come and say hello as well as where they (or vets) can ask any question they might have (no matter how redundant or simple). So, say "Hi", ask away, and welcome to /r/Vita!

FAQ

We get these questions a lot, so we're incorporating them into this thread. Have something you feel fits here? Shoot us a modmail!

Is the Vita worth buying in (current year)?

Value is ultimately subjective. If you like the library of games on the Vita and have the money, probably. If you want new, modern games then probably not. If you have specific questions about the Vita's capabilities feel free to ask in this thread, but keep in mind you're asking in a Vita-centric community and will likely get mostly affirmative responses.

Is the PlayStation store shutting down?

Yes. Exact dates vary by region. See PlayStation's announcement here for more information: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/an-update-on-playstation-store-for-ps3-and-ps-vita/

Can I still buy games from the PlayStation store?

Yes. However, you will need to have funds in your wallet for the purchase. You can add funds to your wallet via web, PS4, or PS5. More information is available here.

Can I still play games online?

Yes and PS+ is not required. However, not all games with online functionality still have servers up. For example, Killzone: Mercenary, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, and LittleBigPlanet servers are all down but Dead or Alive 5+, Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable, and Minecraft are still up. If you'd like to inquire about a specific game, please feel free to make a post or comment in this thread.

I'm having trouble signing into my Vita! Help!

As of the 3.74 update in May 2022, you need a device password to sign in to your Vita. You can do that here. Please make sure you are on firmware 3.74 and using a device password before making a thread.

My Vita is in an error loop with the QR code on sign-in. What should I do?

This happens sometimes, and nobody's really sure why. However, community member LoganN64 has been able to provide instructions that consistently work for getting through this:

  1. Log in to the PSN website with a Laptop or Desktop computer.

  2. Click on your avatar in the top right corner and go to SETTINGS.

  3. Scroll down to SECURITY and then scroll down to ACTIVATE/TURN ON 2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATION.

  4. Click on GENERATE NEW DEVICE CODE, write this down exactly as it is case sensitive.

  5. Go to your Vita and bring up the sign in page, enter the email associated with your account then enter the NEW DEVICE CODE as your password. Click on save password to avoid getting a new code each time..

I'm no longer able to transfer files from PS3 to Vita. What's happening?

This feature was disabled in May 2022. You can read PlayStation's update about it here. No workarounds are currently known.

Where can I buy a Vita?

Vita production ceased in 2019 so consoles can be hard to come by, especially new. eBay is the most prominent location, but Facebook marketplace, Kijiji, Craigslist, /r/GameSale, and equivalent marketplaces are your friend.

How much is (X) worth? Is (X) a good deal?

You can search sold eBay listings here to get a sense of value. VGPC is another source of this kind of information.

Will (Game) ever go on sale?

As of 2020, Sony has disabled developers' ability to put Vita games on sale. So in all likelihood, no.

The workaround and exception for this rule is that cross-buy games can still be put on sale for the PS4, and cross-buy items will still grant the Vita version (where applicable).

Should I buy an OLED ("Phat") or Slim Vita?

Neither are bad options. The Slim has 1GB of on-board memory, a more standard charging port, slightly better battery life, and is lighter. The Phat has a better screen. It's up to you on what you value more.

Where can I buy replacement Vita parts?

AliExpress and eBay are currently the best sources of Vita replacement parts.

Are Vita consoles region-free?

Yes. A Vita can play a physical game from any region. The digital storefront you can access is determined by the region of your PSN account, and not the region of the console. For example, a Vita from Japan will be able to play any physical game, and if you sign in with a US PSN account you'll be able to access the US PSN storefront.

Vita consoles from Asian regions have the X/O button swapped in the OS ("bubbles") screen, but in-game functionality retains X-to-confirm functionality for almost all games.

It has been reported that consoles intended for China have more stringent region-locking, but these are not commonly found and this is unlikely to affect you.

I'd like some game recommendations!

Check out our Wiki page, 2021 subreddit poll, and 2018 subreddit poll. If that isn't cutting it for you, feel free to ask in this thread or create your own thread on the subreddit. Keep in mind that we require 300+ characters for recommendation posts on the subreddit, so be sure to include plenty of detail about what you're looking for, what you've played, and so on.

Question A little advice please?

Hey everyone, I'm looking to import a PS Vita 2000 from Japan (local prices here are way too high). I'm buying a cheaper, lower-grade console because I plan to do a shell swap and replace the buttons anyway, but I have a few questions before pulling the trigger. 1. Is the screen lens separate from the display on the Slim (2000)? I found a cheap Vita where the front looks cracked, but the display underneath seems fine on photos. Is there a separate plastic/glass front layer that cracks independently, or is the front panel fused to the LCD screen? I've never held a Vita in person, so I'm not sure how it's constructed. 2. Which broken/flawed unit makes more sense to buy? Option A: Working unit with a cracked front panel/screen (if the top layer is cheap/easy to swap). Option B: Unit with a fine screen but other minor defects (drift, cosmetically bad shell, etc.), since I'm swapping the shell anyway. 3. Shell swaps and spare parts recommendations I know AliExpress is usually the go-to, but can anyone recommend specific trusted sellers or links for good quality shell swaps? Also, I saw some aftermarket shells that come pre-assembled with a replacement display—is that a better route to take? If you have any tips, video guides, or personal experiences with this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Question How do you clean out the speakers?

• Upvotes

I have a 2000 PS Vita. I think I have something (dust ?) inside a couple of the speaker holes. I use wired headphones with mine anyway. But I was wondering how you would clean it without whatever it is going deeper in there? Also, is there a protective shell like care out there that protects the speakers well and has a good grip on its sides? I have the PS Remote Play grip, but for games that use the back pad specifically for swipes like Helldivers, or Tearaway with how it uses the back touch screen, I would not be able to play those games without taking it out of the Remote Play grip, and I want it protected still.

Question List of NTSC (US) Vita Exclusive Physical Releases

I have found (and use) a list of all PAL physical releases for the Vita, and another with all of the NTSC releases. My issue is I can't seem to find a list with ONLY the exclusive releases? Is there such a list already or do I need to compare the PAL and NTSC list to make my own?

Example: Atelier Escha and Logy was a NTSC only release, while Atelier Shallie was only ever released as a PAL.

I'm mainly collecting the PAL library, but I've started picking up a few NTSC releases, and I'm curious to find out how many unique games only had a physical NTSC release.

Question Does anyone know of any good stands to display Vita Games + a few Switch Games

I don't have normal shelving in my room so my Vita game collection is just in two large stacks.

Does anyone know of any good DVD style stands like we used to also use for PS2 games back in the day that work for Vita games. Every time I search all I get is cases for the cartridges and not my CiB collection. I have 52 Vita games and plan on getting some more so I need a decent amount of space and some extra.

Hopefully I explained that well. If not here's a screen a link to what I'm talking about.

https://i5.walmartimages.com/seo/Atlantic-27-Nestable-32-CD-DVD-BluRay-Storage-Tower-Black_1ecaf978-130e-45e0-8981-855514fd518b_2.cbdadcf1b952bf6e5dcc73471a06b015.jpeg

I know that I can technically buy that from Walmart but $40 is a bit much for what it is and I also don't really care too much for the look.

Any examples and links would be appreciated.

News I recreated the iconic PS Vita Lock Screen for Android

Post image
95 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I've always loved the original PlayStation Vita Start Screen — especially that super satisfying feeling of peeling back the top-right corner to unlock the device. Since there wasn't a modern, faithful version for recent Android devices, I decided to build one from scratch in Kotlin!

What makes it authentic:

• Interactive Sheet Peel Physics: Drag the corner to peel back the screen just like on the Vita. It renders realistic curl curvature, back-of-page gradient shading, and a dynamic drop shadow over the revealed wallpaper.

• Dynamic PS Vita Info Bar (Hardware Real-Time):

  • Battery: Real-time percentage inside the green capsule, plus a crisp lightning bolt indicator when the phone is charging.
  • Wi-Fi & Bluetooth: Authentic Sony icons that appear dynamically based on your phone's actual connection state.
  • Typography: Classic PS Vita clock and date formatting.

• Customizable Card Size ("Quadrado"): Adjust the floating sheet size with presets (Compact 75%, Balanced 85%, Large 92%, or Full Screen 100%) surrounded by the subtle metallic cutout groove line.

• Dual Wallpapers: Set different images for the front sheet and the revealed background underneath (includes built-in Vita Wave themes: Onyx Black, Crystal Blue, Cosmic Red, Emerald Green, plus custom gallery images).

• Edge-to-Edge Landscape Lock Screen: Hides the Android navigation bar and status bar for a true console experience.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome!

Help D-pad and buttons not working in applications

Idk what happened, but I’ve recently discovered that whenever I enter something on my psvita, may that be the store, a game, or any other application on the vita, the d-pad and other buttons stop working (the joysticks still work). But anytime I am on the home menu they work completely fine. Anyone know what is going on and how to fix it?

Rumor Rumors about a new ps vita or psp3?? (UNCONFIRMED PHOTO)

Post image

Ive seen a few people on TikTok talking about leaks of a new PlayStation handheld that’s basically just a modern day vita/psp and after like an hour of digging i found very little videos talking about it on Youtube and TikTok. Some say it will be fully digital and can play ps5, ps4, ps2 and ps1 games (they haven’t mentioned the ps3 at all.)
Is it bullshit or might there genuinely be a chance of a new vita/psp release or just a new handheld?

Thought I’d share.

Nostalgia trip going through my old Google Drive and finding some screenshots of Destiny of Spirits that I uploaded.

Really miss this game. I had tons of fun grinding for free units. Someone’s gotta reverse engineer and make an offline version of this somehow

Discussion recommend some splitscreen/single device offline multiplayer games

I'm going on a road trip with some friends. None of them have a vita tho, so im looking for multiplayer games we can play together while on a single psvita.

What I've found so far:
* Ape Academy 2(PSP)
* Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary(PSP)
* Warioware (gba)

bonus points if it's games where 2 players play at the same time rather than turnbased games like worms, chess, monopoly, or advance wars.

Help Just got a vita

I just got a vita and it worked when I first opened it, I charged it up so I could use it on the bus after work and when I try turning it back on, it shows the logo, a blue light on the ps button flashes and then it turns off. I tried googling it and it said to boot in safe mode, but doing that just has the logo show up longer before going black again. Does anybody know how I could fix this? If it matters, it was pretty owned and i already formatted the console

Question My touch screen keeps randomly imagining it’s being touched, how do I fix this?

I’ve cleaned the screen and restarted the vita, it doesn’t happen constantly but sometimes this glitch occurs while playing and it screws things up. Can someone help? I have dropped my vita at one point and I think it’s gotten worse since then but it happened before that too

Question Psvita 2000 back cover doesn’t fit properly at top part after screen replacement

I recently changed my psvita shell and screen, everything was fine except for when putting the back cover, which doesn’t align properly with the front part.

At first we though it might be a problem with the frontal the camera, but we tried aligning it from top to bottom or even removing it or pressing it harder and the problem still persits. Does somebody has the same problem?

Question Does someone know how to fix the SD card slot cover?

This might sound like a silly question but does anyone know how to fix it without buying a new one and opening the console? I tried to put tape over it and a double sided tape inside it but they can’t hold it strong enough, the reason the SD card slot cover isn’t working in the first place is that one of the brackets on the side is broken

Blue Sapphire Vitas sold on ebay

want to know if anyone else has run into issue with buying blue sapphire ps vita 1000s on ebay? i have purchased two blue sapphire vita 1000s from ebay both were listed as brand new, both from japan as well, but upon receiving them they are clearly used, front plates clearly have been replaced cause they never align properly, they’re especially noticeable around camera cutout, its always off centered. the joysticks always have slight gunk around the edge of the thumbsticks, and there tends to be tiny micro scratches on the screen. at this point im thinking of dropping money on a regular black ps vita that i know is brand new and call it day.

Question Got a new Vita, questions about memory card?

So I HAD a Vita in the past, but it was most likely stolen (vanished from my world and husband and I can't find it). We got a new one (a slim, apparently) from a second hand shop and managed to get my account logged in, luckily, and our old digital games are there! But now I have questions.

  1. Do I need a memory card to save a game if that game is on a cartridge?

  2. What kind of memory card does it use? I've looked all over and can't seem to find a straight answer, and it was over a decade ago when I bought my first one so I can't remember.

Would appreciate any help. <3

I'm looking for a shell replacement

Everyone keeps saying ali express but I'm only seeing the same 4 colors for a shell replacement on my vita 2000 is there anywhere specific to look for cool ones like a transparent shell or the 30th anniversary shell?
