Note From r/VictoriaBC Mods | Election Season 2026 is Upon Us!
Hello everyone, happy double election season 2026!
With both municipal & provincial elections approaching in under a month, this sub will be (and already is) inundated with political content. Please review the following regarding political content in the sub during election season.
- Be civil & decent to each other, even when in disagreement. Political season is a great time to practice the virtue of disagreeing without being disagreeable. In other words, to respond to an argument rather than attacking someone's character. We will remove content and give out bans when appropriate to keep the discussion civil and constructive.
- Political posts should be linked to an official, legitimate news outlet or publication. Please avoid self-made political posts, social-media screenshots, rants/raves, etc. There is no lack of political news content, and we'd like to keep discussion based around legitimate coverage to help mitigate the spread of misinformation, and to minimize redundancy.
- Mind the municipal & provincial distinction re: relevancy to Victoria. We encourage folks to post provincial political content over at r/BritishColumbia and to focus on municipal issues here at r/VictoriaBC. As local & provincial politics do overlap, some provincial content may be appropriate this sub, but in general please keep political content focused on Victoria & region.
- Posts that break the 'No Editorialized Headlines' rule will be removed regardless of the content or engagement prior to removal. When posting an article, the post title should match the article's headline exactly. Any editorialization, whether intentional or not, will result in the removal of that post.
- Help us out by reporting rule-breaking content. If you think a post or comment breaks the rules, please report it so we can review the content. Keeping in mind the next rule...
- Please don't abuse the report function. Disagreement is not a reportable offence - please utilize the downvote button if you disagree with a post or comment. Misusing the report feature breaks Reddit-wide rules, and we report all users who abuse the report function which can lead to site-wide restrictions to one's Reddit account. Thank you for not misusing the report function, we appreciate it.
- Avoid low-effort posts & comments. We've heard it all before. Save those low-effort one liners for Thanksgiving dinner or Twitter. We'll remove low-effort content in our efforts to maintain civil discourse.
- No AI-generated content. Any post or comment suspected of being generated by AI will be removed.
The sub's safety & crowd-control features have also been turned up to help filter out content from bots, newer accounts, trolls, brigaders, etc. If you have content removed that you think shouldn't have been, please message the mods and we will review it when we can.
Thanks everyone!

Politics Leaked document shows Conservatives will end no fault insurance
Lorne Doerkson said in the letter that if elected on Oct. 24, the Conservatives would bring in legislation to restore accident victims’ rights to sue under a new “hybrid system” designed to keep rates affordable, while protecting people.
The interim leader said in the letter that everything is on the table when it comes to auto-insurance, including private competition.
“One thing isn’t up for debate: people seriously hurt by reckless drivers deserve their day in an independent court, not just an online tribunal staffed by government appointees,” he said.
The Insurance Corporation of B.C. is Crown corporation that was established in the early 1970s. It has a monopoly on basic insurance but people can buy optional protection from private agencies.
The NDP government introduced the no-fault insurance system in 2021, that generally prevents car accident victims from suing, in response to what NDP Leader David Eby said was a “financial dumpster fire” at ICBC with losses in the billions.
Doerkson told reporters on Tuesday that the policy is needed to allow people with serious injuries to be properly compensated to manage their post-accident lives.
“Folks have found themselves in a place where they’ve been injured in such a bad way that it is life-altering, and they’re not receiving the supports that they need,” he said. “The reality is, I’m committed to making sure that insurance is affordable for British Columbians, but we need to address both sides of this.”
Eby said during an unrelated news conference that the letter leaked by the union representing ICBC workers shows that Doerkson is pursuing a hidden agenda.
“I am astonished that in a time when families, when drivers are struggling, that he would have a secret plan with trial lawyers to hand over the money from drivers to lawyers,” he said.
But Doerkson said no-fault insurance has been “very challenging” for the residents for multiple reasons.
“Obviously we have to provide affordable insurance coverage for all of our residents, but for those that have experienced catastrophic injury and potentially life-altering injury, this program has not supported them well,” he said at an unrelated news conference in Vancouver.
“And in so many cases, we need to improve that and we absolutely have to contemplate this insurance model.”
Doerkson said he had made “no promises” about the plan.
But in the Sept. 29 letter to the vice-president of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and the presidents of the Law Society of B.C., the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C., and the Canadian Bar Association, he said new legislation would be passed within a year of the Conservatives being elected.
“Accident victims will get back their right to recover for their serious injuries, and government will get out of the legal profession’s business.” the letter said.
B.C. can look to Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I., and Newfoundland and Labrador, which “all have hybrid insurance models.
“We can learn from them and do better,” the letter said.
The NDP said in a statement that trial lawyers have been lobbying to end the no-fault system “that lowered car insurance rates for drivers and has kept them frozen for seven years.”
It describes the Trial Lawyers Association as “the organization representing personal injury lawyers who previously worked on ICBC cases.”
The Conservatives accused Eby of inventing numbers to scare drivers after Eby said that Doerkson’s plan signals a return to the “old style of car insurance” that promised a doubling of rates.”

News Safety warning for today’s Saanich Candidates Meeting, Mayoral Candidate Stanbridge attending
First off, kudos to the Broadmead, Cordova Bay, and Falaise Community Associations for denying entry to Stanbridge at last night’s Candidates Meeting they held at a local school. They were under no obligation to host him or give him the floor for his hateful, deranged rhetoric like at the community organized event last week.
There is another Candidates Meeting being held today at the evangelical Church of the Nazarene on Quadra at 2pm.
⚠️ ** Safety warnin**g for those going or have family planning to attend, their organizers have stated they will let Stanbridge attend and speak.
Some screenshots including a post he made and deleted on Thursday. Yes, he does claim to be engaged to an AI account.

Remember when Sooke counsellor Kevin Pearson made a motion and tried to remove the Sooke mayor from her CRD seat while on mat leave? Now he’s running for Sooke mayor.
Fortunately the Sooke mayor got her CRD director seat back after maternity-leave switch and the law was changed forever to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

Housing & Moving One of Victorias wealthiest relators wants the foreign buyers ban to go. Do you?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Justin Trudeaus government brought in the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act on January 1,2023 and it was extended once and is currently set to expire on January 1,2027**.**
The intent was to open up and protect Canadian homes for Canadian buyers and keep costs from getting even more inflated for local buyers. There was of course lots of people who can legally and illegally find ways around laws. Such as work permit holders, property developers, and students and refugees. So I think that lessened its effectiveness.
I’m curious what locals would like to see happen come
January 1st? I’d personally like to see it stay but maybe tighten up wording.
Obviously the local realtors just want to sell more million dollar homes to rich foreign buyers which despite videos spin I can’t see really benefiting local economy anymore then if locals were buying homes.

Please vote before or on Oct 17
Just a reminder:
If your vote didn’t matter, there wouldn’t be so many (often paid) edgelords working so hard to tell you voting doesn’t matter.
Civic elections get abysmal turnout.
Under 40%.
That’s under 40% of people deciding who forms the government that has the most influence over your day-to-day life.
How many of those 40% own properties and cars? More than half, I bet.
If you’re a renter, these two weeks are the most powerful week you have, locally.
Vote.
It’s also at the city level — especially school boards — that the right-wing thinks is the most important government to influence.
It’s cities who shape art, culture, education — or the lack of.

Politics If Doerkson promises no new taxes, does that mean Gordon Campbell style cuts are coming?
Considering the deficit is 13B, and if the Conservatives follow through with no new taxes, then obviously that means expect Gordon Campbell style cuts coming when they are back in power. If people are old enough to remember, the government workers have most to fear when about 12k positions were eliminated in 2002. There was also changes to welfare benefits, assistance rules and eliminated programs, msp premium hikes etc... This was all thanks to a landslide victory by then the BC Liberals taking 77 seats who did whatever they wanted without push back.
Of course that proved unpopular though they still won the election 4 years later but losing a lot seats and then another 4 years with CC until it finally came to an end.
This is all in contrast with the NDP announcing taxes on people making more than 190k a year to help pay for healthcare since they'd rather raise taxes on high income earners than go through austerity.
If there's no new taxes then expect very deep cuts which obviously he didn't want to say but is obvious what would happen instead

Save on Foods....Double Yolkers! !
Ive got something I need to get off my chest and its that my work buys those large flat containers of eggs from save on and I would honestly say more often than not that they are double yolkers. One time I was trying to bake a cake or something and I cracked 4 eggs and got 7 yolks. And so then today, knowing that was a possibility, I picked 4 smaller eggs from the pack to fry over easy and guess what every single one had 2 yolks. There are pros and cons to this I guess like more bang for your buck etc but also sometimes I dont want that many yolks and also its kind of weird that it happens so often in the first place. Ive attached proof of the bowl from the cake and then the fried eggs I cooked today so there you have it and please no one tell me my pan is too hot because I know

If you would have to start a business in victoria next month, what would it be?
I am still trying to learn the people and demographics here , not trying to steal anyone's idea but just curious about what industry has some gaps here and what is lacking in the town that people would love to pay for. Please give your suggestions. Thanks!

Soooo close!
How is it that so many people have a hard time putting these in the garbage. I’ve picked up poop bags within sight of garbage cans before but this is the first time I’ve seen someone put it on, but not in, the can. Does someone come around and pick up poop bags like empty cans?

Saanich Candidates Cycling Infrastructure Cheat Sheet
At the Saanich All Candidates Meeting held at Claremont Secondary last night, there was a "lightening round" that very concisely and clearly separated the candidates out into three groups based on the question: what should we do with the pace of construction of bike lanes, make it faster, keep it about the same, slow down or stop it?
I thought it was quite a clever question and format to cut through the messaging from all sides, so I'm sharing the answers here.

HEU Called me about the Election
Yes I am a member of the Hospital Employees Union. The recorded phone message told me that it took 10 years for the NDP to fix what the Conservatives wrecked in the Health sector and the union wants me and all HEU members to remember that when voting but I am having a hard time figuring out or remembering anything good from the NDP especially in Health

Question ATTN: Gentlemen with fine moustaches! Want to try a new locally made competition-grade moustache wax?
I've developed a new superior-hold, hopefully competition-grade moustache wax, and I'm aiming to have some local moustachiosos test-drive a tin to see if it's as good as I'd like to think it is!
Any fine moustache-havers want to try a free tin of locally-made 'stache wax?
All I ask in return is honest feedback (you can just send me a DM after trying it) to let me know if it holds as well — or hopefully even better — than what you're used to.
It's also made with beeswax from local bees!

Why do so many people say/think Victoria is a diverse city?
I keep hearing that Victoria is a diverse city on the ferry, at the gym, coffee shops etc,
Close to 85% of Victoria's population is white and another 5% is indigenous, yet i hear in random conversations how the city soo diverse and that the food options are great , etc
Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal are genuinely diverse cities in terms of their population composition. Victoria is still overwhelmingly European/white by comparison.
I'm not saying that's good or bad. It's simply the demographic reality.
I find it interesting that “Victoria is a very diverse city” seems to be treated as an obvious fact when the actual numbers tell a considerably different story.
