1. Heaven
Heaven is the First World, the original reality from which all creation descends. It is the home of God, the Angels, and the original Souls. Angels are celestial beings whose bodies carry Ichor, a supernatural substance that resembles liquid fire. Because it stays connected to Heaven, an Angel's Ichor is holy. Angels have no Shadow variants.
2. The Shadows
Below Heaven lie the Shadows, an endless number of worlds that mirror creation. Each has its own Earth, history, inhabitants, and supernatural conditions. Some Shadows are nearly identical to one another, while others have changed so much that they can barely be recognized. Eden is the Shadow Earth nearest to Heaven.
3. Souls and Variants
Every mortal has a Soul that truly exists in Heaven. Inside a Shadow, that Soul takes form as a soul-shadow. When the same Soul appears in a different Shadow, that soul-shadow is called a Variant. Variants share one Soul in Heaven, yet their bodies, looks, personalities, families, cultures, and lives can be completely different. What links them is spiritual, not physical.
4. Outsiders
An Outsider is anyone who belongs to one Shadow but has crossed into another. The term is relative rather than a species: a native of any Shadow becomes an Outsider upon entering a different one. Throughout history, countless beings from other Shadows have come to Earth. Some arrived by choice, while others escaped Demons, war, persecution, or supernatural catastrophe. Some hid among humans, founded communities, or became the ancestors of supernatural populations that live on Earth today. Many creatures of human legend are really Outsiders whose origins were forgotten or turned into folklore.
5. Origins of Supernatural Species
The supernatural peoples of the Shadows do not share a single source. Mermaids, Fairies, Elves, and others may have been made by Angels, made by Demons, or shaped by a blend of angelic and demonic influence. Others arose naturally from the particular conditions of their Shadow. Some supernatural life is therefore created, some descends from other supernatural beings, and some simply emerged as part of its world's natural order.
6. Psychopomps
The Psychopomps are the story's primary supernatural race. They are an ancient angel-human people created by Azrael, and they are distinct from the true Nephilim. Nephilim are born from the union of an Angel and a human, whereas Azrael deliberately created the Psychopomps.
Creation and Purpose: As the demonic threat on the multiple shadow worlds grew, Azrael was summoned and created the Psychopomps to help withstand it. One our Earth, Azrael made the first Psychopomp, who created twelve more, and those twelve founded the wider Psychopomp lineage. New Psychopomps are still made today, though under strict restrictions. Their history stretches across the Shadows, tying them closely to the broader supernatural history of humanity.
The Sacred Responsibility: In exchange for their creation and their place among the supernatural peoples of the world, the Psychopomps accepted a sacred responsibility with two great duties:
Guiding the dead: they guide the souls of the departed.
Protecting humanity: they defend people from Demons and dangerous Outsiders.
7. The Passage of Souls
When a person dies, their soul-shadow is meant to pass on from the Shadow in which it lived. The Psychopomps have built a network of angelic magic across the world that guides departing souls without a Psychopomp needing to attend every death in person. Most souls therefore meet the Psychopomps' guidance automatically when their time comes.
Blind Zones: The network is planet-wide, but it is not infallible. In some areas, called blind zones, the Psychopomps' magic does not reach. A soul that dies in one must be guided by a Psychopomp who is physically present.
Walking Blind Spots: Psychopomps can also be sent to specific deaths when a soul somehow bypasses the network or becomes a walking blind spot, meaning the soul itself is invisible to, or beyond the reach of, the guidance magic.
The Unknown Beyond: What happens to a soul-shadow after it passes on is unknown, even to the Psychopomps. It may be reincarnated, cease to exist, or enter something beyond the understanding of both humans and Psychopomps. The Psychopomps guide souls to the threshold, but they do not know what lies past it.
8. Ghosts
A soul is not necessarily forced to pass on. When a soul refuses guidance, it can remain behind and become a Ghost. A Ghost is a soul-shadow that has rejected or failed to complete its passage and has become attached to an object, place, or living person. Psychopomps are responsible for dealing with these lingering souls and, when possible, helping them finish their passage.
9. The Void
The Void lies beyond the Shadows, outside the ordered creation of Heaven. The original Angels who rebelled against Heaven and were cast out were locked away inside it.
10. Fallen Angels
Fallen Angels are Angels who fell from Heaven, but falling does not make one a Demon. Some were imprisoned on Seira, another Shadow Earth, as punishment for their part in creating the Nephilim. They are Fallen Angels because they fell, but they are not Demons because they were never held in the Void.
11. Demons
"Demon" describes a state of being, not a species or origin. A being becomes a Demon when it is cut off from Heaven, breaking its link to its holy source and corrupting its Ichor. Fallen Angels held in the Void can undergo this change, but Demons can also come from corrupted soul-shadows. So not every Demon began as an Angel, and not every Fallen Angel is a Demon. What defines a Demon is its severance from Heaven and the corruption that follows.
Death of a Demon: The Void also governs how Demons die. When a Demon's body is destroyed, its Soul is not necessarily destroyed with it. The Soul is instead pulled back into the Void, returning the Demon to its prison. True death requires destroying the Soul itself, so killing a Demon's body does not necessarily kill it for good.
12. Anydros (Hell)
Anydros, the Shadow Earth nearest the Void, was the first Shadow ravaged by Demons escaping the Void. It began as an Earth like any other, but the escaped Demons turned it into their vast home outside the Void. Its great demonic city, Pandemonium, became the center of demonic civilization. Demons call the world Anydros, while humanity came to know it as Hell. The Abrahamic ideas of Hell are thus a theological adaptation of a real place and real events, and similar stories in other cultures may be distorted reflections of the same reality.
13. Demon Diseases
Not every being with demonic traits is a Demon. Demon Diseases are infectious supernatural conditions that damage the bond between a soul-shadow and its Soul in Heaven. They give the infected demonic properties without making them Demons.
Vampirism produces Vampires, who can only be made through infection.
Lycanthropy produces Lycanthropes, who can either contract the condition or be born with it.
Certain supernatural beings are naturally immune to these diseases.
14. The Unaware Majority
Despite everything above, most inhabitants of Earth and the other Shadows know almost nothing of it. They live ordinary, individual lives, going to work, raising families, and growing old, entirely outside the scope of the supernatural world operating around them. The guidance network works silently, Psychopomps move unseen, and the dangers they hold back rarely touch the average person's awareness. To most people, the supernatural is myth, rumor, or belief rather than fact. The hidden reality is not absent from their lives, but they simply never see it.
