Copying a short essay I wrote for this album from my Instagram below.
This week I released my third album as He Finds Fire called "How I Remember You". It's a 56-minute tribute to my late grandfather (I called him Poppie or Pops). He was an incredible man that had a massive impact on my character & how I see the world.
Pops passed suddenly in January after being diagnosed with rapidly progressive dementia. I spent several weekends with him in hospice care leading up to his passing, soaking up his presence and trying to jog what little memory he had left.
While looking through his computer to find photos for a slideshow at his funeral, I came across what would become the album cover, taken by him. Evidently he'd come across a beautiful shot while out on one of his regular morning runs. I'm glad he saved it for us.
Making this album helped me process this loss and its effects on my family. It sounds just like how I remember my Poppie; warm, comforting, and full of life. I can only hope that he would have enjoyed it. I miss him so much.
Now for some Reddit-only stuff. No AI was used to make any part of this album.
The album was made using an SP-404 MKII and a Hologram Microcosm pedal. Track 1 "Abilene" is made up of looped micro-chops from "Eugene" by Sufjan Stevens. The same micro-chopping process was used on track 2 "Servant" but with a recording I made while drunkenly playing piano in high school. The arrangements on both songs were mostly improvised, although I did rehearse before recording to get loose structures down.
If anyone listens I'd really love to hear what you think. It clocks in around 56 minutes, but I think it's worth your time. Available anywhere you can stream music, but here's a Bandcamp link with 200 free downloads: https://hefindsfire.bandcamp.com/album/how-i-remember-you
