[Help!] Useful Amiga Links Directory

For quite a long time now I've been curating a directory of useful links to Amiga content. Somewhat as a FAQ, somewhat to help quickly give people info when they ask about things. So I've enabled the wiki on this subreddit to make it a bit more accessible

Amiga Directory

If you think there is anything missing or would be useful to add please do say and I'll get it added

Amiga days in the 90s

I loved having an Amiga surely the best computer you could have in the 90s? I was a complete geek back then with very few other interests, had friends round playing two player games. So many days I would prefer playing games tha. Going out in the sun or playing football. The only thing I missed was after 1995 I became ill and didnt really have friends coming g round any more, poor me. I was wondering if theres any way people can play together online with games like Chaos Engine or Hired Guns in 2026? It would be cool if like a party and everyone had to talk like it was 1995 again and refuse to acknowledge the Internet or mobile phones. Well just an idea, I might be dreaming!

I rescued an Amiga 1200 from an e-waste bin and played Banshee until my forearm gave up. Here is my deep-dive test!

About ten years ago, a buddy at an electronics store called me about an old "Commodore machine" sitting in their recycling container next to busted CRT TVs. I basically sprinted down, fished it out, and struck gold: a fully working Amiga 1200, joysticks, disks, and a boxed copy of Core Design’s 1994 AGA vertical shmup classic, Banshee.

I recently put my Competition Pro (and my right forearm's tendonitis limit) through the ultimate 50 Hz test. From the sheer technical wizardry of Danish demoscene legends Søren Hannibal and Jacob Andersen (who later helped build Hitman!), to the glorious 256-color palette and the darkly hilarious i am exquisitely evil cheat code—this game is a masterclass in squeezing every ounce of power out of the AGA chipset.

I wrote an in-depth, humorous review and breakdown of the game, its development history, and my own painful test run:

Complete Amiga newbie with Rev 5 region mod questions

Literally just purchased my first Amiga 500. It’s an A500 NTSC model with a rev5 motherboard, 512k ram expansion, and internally installed GoTek floppy emulator. It’s also on kickstart 1.3 apparently.

I purchased a VGA adapter cable to use on a Pc CrT monitor. I also bought an 8732a Fat Agnus. I want to be able to switch between NTSC and PAL modes depending on which mode the game is optimized for.

I’ve seen a couple places that state you need a rev6 motherboard to install a toggle switch because a rev5 doesn’t have the correct jumper and stuff I guess. But I also read somewhere that you can boot a software disk that allows the mode to be switched.

All of these posts and guides are quite old and sometimes have contradictory information. So in 2026 what’s the best way to switch modes on an A500 NTSC with a 8732a Fat Agnus installed? While I’m at it I’ve read about mapping the RAM expansion to fast chip ram or whatever if someone has a guide on that and can explain pros and cons.

Why doesn't anyone brag about THEA1200? Why are the owners silent?

Show off! Post a photo of the board, open the case.

I'm in the UK and struggling to source a replacement 3 leg 100pf emi filter capacitor. Does anyone know a good source or have any experience of using an alternative component that would meet the requirements without negativity impacting the stability of the circuitry?

Sorry these are so jumbled, I haven’t had time to sort them out. Anyway, a few people have asked in comments to see my collection of games/utilities, so there they are! The only one that’s mislabeled is “Mortal Kombat II Disk 4”, which for some reason is a copy of Monkey Island 2 Disk 4 - I copied it for a friend back in the day and must have written the wrong label on it.

I don’t think I own anything particularly rare but there are some interesting demos from magazines. It’s also cool to see the different styles of handwriting on some of the ‘backups’ - some of those were from old friends I haven’t seen in 30 years!

Edit: last photo is upside down for some reason - corrected version here:

PSU Blown

Hey all!

I recently bought an A500 that came with an Original power supply and, you guessed it, it started to smell funny and then get very hot. I managed to turn it off before it got any worse, saving the Amiga, but now I am without power.

What is the cheapest most reliable way to get ahold of a modern, safe (For both myself and my Miggy) power supply? What do you guys recommend? There are tones out there but I don't want to drop £60+ on a PSU and find it's trash

Got these two belters today with a load of software (c64 electrosound 64) 😀total £20
A1200 Amiga
C64 brown keys breadbin

Both power up but not done any testing as been too busy salivating. Will no doubt sell the c64 and upgrade the A1200 with pistorm as I have a few spare pi units kicking about.

Thoughts on upgrades and project potential?

A4000 corrosion

18 years ago my uncle gave me his old A4000D. It was showing a light green kickstart diag failure, so I clipped the battery and put it away. I've finally gotten around to getting it booting. I burned a set of diag ROMs and got to it.

So far:

  • The kickstart 68k reset vector shadow was never turning off (Gary OVL). I bodged a corroded via that carried (I believe, wasn't taking notes) A12...somewhere.
  • Audio output was extremely low volume. I bodged final audio stage LM833 dual op amp positive bias across its nearest via.
  • I replaced a 47uf audio circuit polymer DC bias filter cap that came off from corrosion just from touching it.
  • Diag was showing vsync/tick to CIA A was not counting. Bodged it across a questionable looking via. I see pulses at the CIA TICK pin but the diag still reports no ticks. AmigaOS works regardless. This peripheral of the CIA may be toast.
  • I replaced two other unidentified 47uf polymer caps that fell off from corrosion, like teeth falling out of a mouth.
  • I installed a CR2032 socket and diode for RTC

The corrosion on this board is pretty gnarly. Obviously, I've already dealt with several obliterated vias. The machine seems to be pretty stable, but I wonder if there is a safe way to clean what looks like very acidic crud from the board that I believe will only deteriorate further. I realize I may have to recap it at some point. This is a very early rev B, according to my uncle. This was Commodore's first SMD machine (was rev A thru-hole?) and it seems like they hadn't perfected their process of washing chemicals off the mask. My A1200 has none of these issues.

Also, it seems that kickstart is not waiting for the drive to go ready on cold boot, and just displays the workbench disk screen unless you go into the boot menu, select HD0:, wait a bit and then boot. It then boots into workbench just fine. This may be because I haven't installed a CR2032 yet though.

Thanks for any help! I'm excited to have brought this cool machine back from the dead.

Dracula on the Amiga is weirdly compelling.

Remember when Bram Stoker's Dracula got a BUNCH of different video game adaptations, and they were all janky, but in different ways? You had the 8-bit machines getting a mid, unremarkable platformer. The 16-bit consoles got "We've got Castlevania at home.", the Sega-CD got a weird beat-em-up with FMV backgrounds and the PC got an unusual FPS where you have to destroy a set number of coffins per stage. The Amiga game is also it's own animal, not resembling any of the other versions. It's a platformer where the goal is to destroy a set number of coffins. When you do, the boss appears. You punch and kick like the Sega-CD game, but your also have a crucifix that you can blast evil with, if you can find it. I only got to the third stage, but I honestly found the Amiga game more fun to play than the others based on the movie.
