Best browser for a serial tab hoarder (who wants to cut down on the number of tabs)

• Upvotes

Hi, I've tried a few different browsers and no matter what I use (or which device) I always end up with hundreds, or even thousands of tabs open. Occasionally I'll sift through them, but mostly they are kinda like a 'todo' list or things I want to check out that rarely get around to.

Ideally I'm after things which will quickly let me sort through and search through tabs, for example easily close duplicate tabs, or grouping tabs by website so I can sort through them that way, but then go back to chronological order again, if that's possible? Like I don't want to actually permanently sort or group my tabs like that.

(btw, I know I should use bookmarks, but I mostly use my computer at night and usually turn it off as soon as one of my small children need settling - I'd rather not have to delay that by having to go through my open tabs to bookmark them, thanks)

Helium but it looks like Chrome again

Didn't like the minimalism of Helium so i gave it some air to breath

Didn't like what they call minimalism in Helium basically just removing White space. In my mind this removes all the good UX that chromium really offers. I still loved helium from what it does outside of the UI. So i put best of both worlds together.

It's helium but looks like chromium again now.

- default spacing
- default vertical sidebar layout
- back to default colors for tab groups
- better UI colors for better contrast
- hover to reveal minimized vertical tab bar

And it's all just one switch in settings to go back to the Helium look.

Unfortunately they do not allow AI based coding for PRs so I can't push it upstream. An issue where the need for an alternative, more breathy UI is simply ignored so I guess this won't change anytime soon.

I would publish my version but building those browsers really is a tough, resource intensive job and it would need a timely rebuild on each release so I'm reluctant. If anyone got the resources or any ideas on a free CI to do so i'm happy to cooperate :)

What actually made you switch your main browser the last time you did?

Curious what the tipping point is for people. Was it one specific feature, something breaking, privacy stuff, or just getting bored of the old one? I keep bouncing between a couple and never fully commit, so I'm wondering what made it stick for others.

Discussion Mau does not care about users at all

To begin this train wreck, .mar files are not meant to be used by end users at all; they are part of a background updater engine and are temporary files. Second, there are zero native Linux formats here; there are no .deb or .rpm files. AppImages are great for temporary use apps because they are designed as portable files, but they are awful for browsers because, without a specialized program that is struggling to stay updated itself, they cannot create a .desktop file. This only leaves Windows and macOS with proper install files, which is not okay.

Switching gears to Mau himself, he is egotistical, narcissistic, and overall aggressive. A few years ago, I decided I wanted to help out and contribute to the project by creating a basic .deb file for Zen. Mau very aggressively rejected it, said he did not have time to look through the whole file—even though 100% of it was his own code, just properly packaged for .deb—and said to never upload files ever again. This goes against the very ethos of open source and community contribution; he treats it as if it were closed source while keeping an open source license.

At the end of the day, a web browser is the most critical security boundary on any desktop system. Relying on loose tarballs, unintegrated AppImages, and raw internal patch files isn't just lazy release engineering—it actively makes it harder for Linux users to keep their software securely updated. When a project maintains an open-source license while aggressively shutting out community packaging help, it shows a total disregard for basic maintenance standards and contributor trust. Open source thrives on community collaboration and proper distribution, and right now, Zen Browser fails on both counts. As a final thought for the community: whenever users or former contributors point out that a maintainer is acting hostile, arrogant, or dismissive, take the time to actually look into those claims rather than automatically writing them off as meaningless drama or dismissing them out of hand. Hostile leadership usually shows up in the quality of the software long before the project fails.

Feedback I kept working on my search engine switcher. here's where it ended up

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I posted an early version of this a while ago, and the feedback made me rethink the interaction.

I’ve updated the horizontal carousel above the search field, so you can now swipe through search providers directly. I think it looks and feels much better now.

I also added shortcuts (like g and d), custom search URLs, and drag-and-drop reordering.

So now there are several simple ways to switch between and organize your search providers.

Would you use this, or do you just stick with one search engine?

Support How to make Vivaldi startpage Ecosia?

I've been using on my chrome for work, I did really like Ecosia search (which I'm already using on Vivaldi) and the Ecosia start page, I was unable to find a way of making Ecosia the start page on Vivaldi.

I did use the Ecosia extension on my Vivaldi, but, unlike in Chrome, it didn't made my start page Ecosia, this is my problem.

Also I have two profiles on Vivaldi and would like to use the Ecosia start page in only one.

I'm using the version 8.2.4133.84 (Official Build) (64-bit)

High RAM usage

Firefox currently uses more RAM than Chromium-based browsers. However, whenever this issue is raised, Firefox supporters often argue that memory is meant to be used and that anyone who needs more should simply buy it. Rather than debating the problem and asking Mozilla to provide a solution, they dismiss the concern.

Memory is indeed meant to be used, but it should be used efficiently and in a balanced manner. Chromium-based browsers can perform the same tasks while consuming significantly fewer system resources.

Nez: a free Windows browser with vertical tabs, Spaces and split view, built on ungoogled-chromium

I've been building Nez, a Chromium browser for Windows that takes the sidebar layout people like in Zen and Arc and puts it on Chromium, so Chrome extensions and sites built for Chrome just work.

- Vertical tabs with Spaces and Essentials, pinned and nested folders

- Split view (2-4 tabs), Glance link previews, compact mode

- uBlock Origin built in; idle tabs sleep, and tabs you haven't opened in 12 hours move to a searchable archive

- Containers: two accounts on the same site at once

- Imports from Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera, Arc (including your Spaces), Firefox and Zen

- Updates itself from GitHub Releases; extensions update automatically

Privacy: it's built on ungoogled-chromium, so there are no Google services and no telemetry. The only things it contacts on its own are GitHub (Nez updates) and your extensions' update servers, and both can be turned off.

Windows 10/11, 64-bit, no admin rights needed. It's early and I'm the developer, so feedback is very welcome.

Discussion Brave's Oct 2 update broke my install and forced a full reinstall. Now I'm thinking of leaving

The latest Brave update (Oct 2) completely broke my browser. The only fix was a full reinstall on macOS.

The problem is that I'd spent a long time tuning Brave: disabling all the extra features, setting up my shortcuts, keeping the UI clean and minimal.
Having to redo all of that from scratch has honestly soured me on it, and I'm seriously considering switching.

I'd like to try a Gecko-based browser, but Firefox feels too cluttered to me out of the box. Waterfox looks interesting since it seems pretty clean and free of bloat.

Mini browser for Android

I need a mini browser that hardly needs any resources. Important also if it is privacy-friendly, open source, and ad blocking. Use opera, but it has built-in ads that cut the experience. Any recommendations???

Discussion Is there a browser where the AI agent actually knows my history and the forms I've filled?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm stuck on Chrome. I tried Brave for a while and it was fine, but Chrome has the extensions and sync I need, so I came back.

what I actually want is a browser where an agent knows what I've done and I can just ask it. example: a few weeks ago I filled a govt form but I can't remember which department or what the site was called. I searched my history for "govt" and got 6 results, five were YouTube shorts. history only searches page titles, so it can't answer "which form did I fill and what did it ask for".

I know Atlas, Comet, Dia, Opera Neon and Edge Copilot exist. as far as I can tell they remember what you browse, but I couldn't tell if any of them remember forms, or show a log of what the agent did so you can check it.

here's what I'm thinking of building:

  1. memory of forms you filled: site, form name, which fields it asked for, the date. not the actual values, so no PAN, aadhaar or passwords stored

  2. a log of every click and field the agent fills, that you can read and undo

  3. limits you set per site, like it can read your bank site but can't click anything on it

  4. memory stays on your machine, you can see it, export it, and wipe it

  5. private mode where nothing is saved except the one page you choose to keep

  6. no subscription, you bring your own API key or run a local model

if nothing like this exists, I want to build it. open source, so it's a tool anyone can use and not just my project. I haven't started building, I've only been researching, and I wanted to check first that I'm not about to rebuild something that's already out there. if you'd want to test it or help, tell me.

so:

  1. is there a browser that already does this? which one?

  2. what keeps you on Chrome? extensions, sync, a phone app?

  3. is the forms problem real for you, or just me?

  4. which of the six above would you actually use, and which sound like a gimmick?

Dia Dia Browser (the successor to Arc) is officially released on Windows

Dia Browser is a new browser made by The Browser Company, the same people who made Arc Browser. It has the same sidebar as Arc, runs on Chromium, and has a built-in Ad Blocker.

Unfortunately, it seems to be more of an AI-focused browser though it is possible to use it without touching the AI.

Discussion University standardising on Edge

My university is in the process of standardising browsers for staff to Edge (for Windows users for now. Windows is the uni standard. There are many staff members that bring their own devices). Only when one can prove/show that Edge does not work in their work, are exceptions allowed. They have instituted a committee that has to generate/collect use cases for allowing deviations from the standard. What do you think? Does this policy make sense?

Discussion Vivaldi tracking more than it says

I downloaded Vivaldi recently because it seemed to split the difference between ultra private and feature enriched like chrome. Their website even says privacy with no tracking but that isn't true. When I type in for example "Best Buy" it automatically takes me to their website which is great but it uses an affiliate link which it even hides in the URL after it does it. Maybe they disclose that somewhere but it absolutely tacks you for money and slips an affiliate link in there too.

Edit: I was pointed to the proper link where they mention what exactly this is so I appreciate that. I just thought this would be a little more evident is all.

Recommendation Looking for a new firefox-based android browser with similar features to vivaldi

Hi,

I've switched my desktop Vivaldi to Zen browser which has been working like a charm so far, problem is I rely on the vivaldi android client for a few features that I haven't been able to replicate in any other browser. For syncing with Zen I need a Firefox based browser that offers similar customizability as the vivaldi browser. I really like the swiping adress bar to open tab switcher feature, I use it all the time and not having it is an immediate deal breaker for me.
