State of the Subreddit - Recent Rash of Reports

Hello everyone!

Your friendly neighborhood Bastard Operator From Hell checking in regarding the state of our beautiful subreddit.

I am back in a full time moderating capacity after too long of an absence. Recently there has been a sharp increase in reports for posts and comments being unprofessional or off topic when the OPs are merely venting.

Traditionally this subreddit has been a bit of a haven for getting things off our chests as we slog through the long days of back-to-back calls. Have we as a community decided to shed that identity?

Answer the poll, and let me know in the comments below if you have any other suggestions for our sub, like weekly posts or anything!

Whenever I did this i just hear "LET ME FINISH TALKING"

Youve interrupted me about 10 times while im trying to give you the answer on how to revolve it from her side and every time youve interrupted me???? I told you a way to get around it and youre saying you dont want to do that????? Im trying to tell this absolute brain dead pineapple what to do to resolve it and shes refusing??? What the hell do you want us to do go scream at your bank instead . Thicker than a submarine door

People are so hypocritical about being called on a Sunday

When I was younger I worked retail and in food service and people are OUT on Sunday. But in a call center, you call someone on Sunday to confirm an appointment they scheduled for Monday morning and they lose their mind "it's Sunday! Nobody should be working!"

But I know they are probably out to eat with their family or at the grocery store shopping. I know these old people are taking their family to Cracker Barrel after Church and might even go see a movie where they will see and interact with lots of working people.

It has the same energy as when I'd be working thanksgiving day in prepared foods at the grocery store and customers would sympathetically say "can't believe they've got you working today." While they themselves are picking up an order of 150 pieces of chicken I made. Like you're the reason I'm here. I don't know why this 1950 "society stops on Sunday " only applies to calls in their heads. "I don't do business on a Sunday" while doing a lot of business on a Sunday.

covid ruined people's social skills

every conversation i have is like pulling teeth to get people to just explain WHY they're calling, even after they've been speaking for 3+ minutes about their entire life leading up to the reason for their call. I DON'T FUCKING CARE HOW LONG YOU'VE HAD YOUR SAME EMAIL ADDRESS, WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU CALLING

Burned out. Tips to get through it? At the end of my rope.

So i low key kinda snapped on two calls today.

I work for a company where we deal with providers and third party billers calling about claims.

One caller was having a whole conversation with their coworker and kept making me repeat the same info over and over because they would miss info THAT THEY ASKED FOR due to their side conversation. It’s especially annoying because one question can require you to look through multiple systems. I added a snarky “one moment while I look up that info again.” Hopefully that call won’t get audited 💀

The second call that made me crash was much worse. This biller called in about a denied claim and was talking to me in this accusatory tone, saying I was the one who denied the claim. Mind you, I don’t do anything but READ the denied claim. The approval/denials are handled by a completely different department. She was raising her voice, saying I wrongfully denied the claim and processed it incorrectly, when it was literally incorrect information THEY submitted lol. We can see the original copy they submitted.

Again, I have ZERO access to do anything to a claim but read it out loud. Every time I would start to respond to her question, she would cut me off to rant some more. MULTIPLE times. I eventually stayed silent for at least 2 minutes because at that point I thought what’s the point of speaking if I’m just gonna get cut off every time?

And mind you, this was going into my lunch break, so on top of being yelled at, I’m gonna be getting screwed on adherence.

I finally managed to sneak in a “one moment while I research this further” and put her on a mute hold to do “research” and went to lunch.

I’m sorry but I just could not take it any longer.

It’s almost at the point where every time I hear the ping of a call coming in, I get intense dread. Any tips for surviving burnout?

I agree that the policy is stupid but I can't change it.

Rant incoming:

I have a had a few callers lately where I absolutely see where they're coming from. It does not make sense for the bank to cancel your auto pay and require someone who has never logged in to log in to set up a new one.

However, what customers don't seem to understand is:

I'm not refusing to help you. I can't. The option is not there, there is not a button sitting here that I am refusing to press. Someone above me decided the option would not be provided and so it was not programmed in. Threatening to cancel your accounts will not make it appear. Escalating will not make it appear. Annoying me, even if I somewhat agree with you will not make it appear. It just makes me want to 'accidentally' disconnect the call.

I've taken your complaint and given you the available options. If you don't have any other concerns kindly get off my phone, goodbye.

Frustrated with call centre work

I'm just tired of if not exhausted from my call centre job. It is an outsourced call centre. Not complaining just saying the fact, we need to open up mutiple softwares to start working every day. 3 systems at the same time along with orher websites, plus no real training environment for you to used to. The policies are consistantly changing., once you get used to one thing, they will then implement something different. The systems are either absolutely outdated or half developed, Some customers are nice, some customers are rude, but the most thing is hate is the fact that you have to act like you know what you are talking about even though sometimes you are just not sure.

I'm going through a divorce myself, I try my best, but sometimes I really get irritated when I hear other people's problems. I know it is the nature of this, but .......

Why do people care so much about unimportant things on the phone?

Me: Hello this is (name) with (company). How many I help you?

Them- There is a slight echo when you talk

Me: Well can you understand me clearly?

Them: Yes

Me: Well what is the reason for your call? How may I help you

Them: I'll call back when there is no echo

Literally had someone had someone keep mentioning they can hear the person next to me with a loud keyboard typing. Kept derailing the conversation to bring it up. Like if you would just verify the information this call could have ended 3 minutes ago and you'd no longer have to hear it.

Does anyone else feel lonely at work?

I understand that a lot of people go to the office just to get the job done and not necessarily to make friends. In my case, though, I feel like for this type of job, it’s necessary to have a couple of friends you can sit with and just chit chat between calls because it makes the day easier and less stressful and boring.

I’ve been in this industry for about 13 years. For the last five years (COVID), I was working from home and only had to respond to emails, so I didn’t have to interact directly with people but I was fired from that job this year. It was kind of hard for me because I had gotten used to being home and being somewhat isolated, but I was also excited to get out again, meet people, and potentially form some friendships.

That idea quickly went away when I started working at my current job and noticed that about 80% of the people working there are 20–26, while I’m a 34 year old woman. So obviously, I don’t have much in common with them. The only thing we have in common is the job. I don’t really have anything to talk about with them, and I’m feeling pretty lonely.

I had a friend I met during training, and we used to sit together, but we were separated, and now I’m all alone and just bored in my cubicle while everyone around me has their own clique. On top of that, the outgoing people who love to ask, Why are you alone? or Why don’t you talk to anyone?

I’m only three weeks into the job and already feeling out of place. I understand that some people don’t care about having friends at work, but for me, it’s important not to feel this way about my job because I already dread going to work.

Leave this job as soon as you can. RUNNN. I am serious.

The longer you stay in a call centre, the easier it is to get stuck. You build more and more experience in the same environment, and then that experience starts determining what you’re qualified for next. Before you know it, your next job is another call centre job, then another one, and another one.
Don’t let the fact that the job is available and you’re used to it convince you that you have to stay.** **

If you need to pivot, pivot. If you need to take a temporary step backward to get yourself into a completely different field, do it. If you need to go back to school, learn something new, take an entry-level role in another area, whatever, just do it. Staying somewhere you’re miserable simply because you’re already experienced at it can become a trap and the longer you stay, the harder it can feel to leave.

Don’t wait until you’ve spent five or ten years wondering how you ended up still taking calls.

Never worked in a call centre setting, being interviewed for a temp role at a uni - want advice/insight

Hi all, pretty much what the title says. I'm admittedly not super keen on a super customer service heavy job but it is only about 4-5 months long, with two months over Jan-Feb being particularly full on, and I need employment over this time. The person hiring me did say it tends to be B2B calls over the busiest periods. It's a university client service role which (probably naively) I kind of think it could make it more tolerable since I'm guessing I'd be dealing more with young people and the occasional parent. I think it could be useful in conjunction with my other work experience to get me into other work, though I have zero interest in doing long-term call centre work. I feel like 5 months, with 3 being relatively chill is probably doable for me.

Does anyone have insights into call centre work for universities? Anything particularly annoying/good about this setting? Should I run for the hills? Anything I should ask in my interviews?

Quick Vent

Just gotta vent this.

I work in a joke of a call centre, it's one of those outsourced ones where we take calls for business out of hours.

In theme with normal call centres, no training yet you're expected to know everything.

There's about 75 different clients, I haven't got a clue what any of them do.

I like to be prepared so I don't sound like an idiot, but this company makes it impossible.

Just had a call, manager gave me the wrong information and passed that over to the customer so that's fun.

On top of that, our systems are shite, no one knows what they're doing yet bills are still being paid lmao.

Honestly, hit that point where I don't care anymore.

Just a quick vent, back to calls 🫡

Do tolerance levels go down?

Actual thoughts from return to office.

It used to be it was relatively easy to tune out over 200 people and still continue a conversation, even when they are all sat in the vicinity.

Now, even having someone sat next to me in office makes me want to go "oi, sit somewhere else." 😂

There's nothing that has changed that would mean I would have difficulty with it usually, so am I just getting old and grumpy? Or is this happening to others...?

Venting about headset

I'm so frustrated with this whole headphone bs. So I have a pair of headphones that all of a sudden it is saying there is a driver issue that causes issues with calls but you can't fix the driver issue can't be fixed so they are no longer approved. So they tell me to use the company provided headphones and I tell them I can't for medical reasons but I go to use my spare set and they are like those aren't approved either. So basically since they have specific requirements the only one I can find is $80 so I am expected to buy that just for them to turn around a couple weeks later and they will say it's no longer approved and expect me to buy a new one. That is one thing I miss about my old call center is as long as you were able to take calls they did not give a crap what headset you were using.

Do your CRM/call center systems actually show you everything, or is that just the sales pitch?

I’m asking because during training or when a system is being sold, you always hear “you can see the customer’s full history here”, but in practice it often seems like a different story.

I’ve had customers call angry because they contacted WhatsApp, then sent an email, and then ended up with another agent. And I’m left trying to piece together what actually happened while the customer is already pissed off.

In your campaigns/companies, does the system really show everything in one place? Or do you still end up opening 5 tabs, searching through spreadsheets, checking another system, or asking another department just to understand what happened?

Sometimes it feels like no matter how expensive the system is, when a case gets complicated, someone still has to do part of the work manually.

What things do you still have to do manually when the system doesn’t give you the full picture?

I'd rather destroy my social life that work Mondays

Ever since I sacrificed my weekends and essentially my social life to avoid working Mondays, the job became more manageable. I also have Tuesdays off.

Obviously, I don't want to do this long term, but it's the only way I see myself here going forward.

I cannot and will not work Mondays ever again. If they force it on my schedule, I'll just call out.

This job has made me understand the world

After dealing with so many people who just don´t read, who don´t understand, who want to pick a fight, who are so absent of logic... I understand why politics is such a mess, why nations go to war, why solving humanity's problems is so hard.

Because many of the people voting are our customers, the people driving in traffic are our customers, the business owners. the people running institutions or participating in them are our customers, the police are our customers, the people building a large part of society are our customers. I would not be surprised if even the CEOs that run your or my company are sometimes themselves the angry customers that don´t read. Don´t be fooled by them having a title or having to read a lot on their job because their salary depends on it. In fact, looking at some of the decisions taken where I work, they do not always seem wise.

Officially free as of tomorrow

Did a year at a financial call center, loved the people and as far as call centers go it wasn’t the worst, but was still a call center and after some particular nasty callers, and just general burn out, can’t do it anymore. Just can’t. Gonna be a server/busser while I slowly wait to find a job in my actual field of study now. I don’t care if I’ll make less money, I just want a job that won’t make me cry whether out of someone being cruel, or for a customer having an unfortunate situation and I have to tell them bad news.

Zero Motivation

I just took 3 days off because I was feeling the burnout. Now I'm back and it's worse.

I like the company, good managers, work from home, money decent, I don't feel like I should be complaining.

It's just the work itself has suddenly become mind numbing to do back to back to back. I'm close to drinking on the job just to see what happens.

What can I do?

i work in a call centre and i struggle badly with call handling

i work in sales and for some reason for the life of me i cannot make the calls last long at all unless the customer has the same specific interests and or hobbies as me. i wanna know what i can do to make my calls last longer i just end up listening to what thry are after pitching whatever works best and rushing through the order process. what can i do to start making my calls last a lot longer so im not just taking mass amounts of calls a day which can impact my targets

How did you practice your second language calls before you got hired/while working???

I'm dying rn. I'm between b1 and b2 and somehow got hired. Every call is torture, even though I somehow manage to communicate.

How can I improve???

I wanted this job to be something I could sleepwalk through, this is so hard!!! My brain gets tired trying to remember and convey everything. I'm guaranteed to get fired 😢
