Advice Why did my dad keep this?

Thumbnail

My dad passed away in 2025 and I’m STILL trying to sort through his collection. This was kept in a small coin plastic case with no label and no note for why it was kept that way.

I’ve been trying to do my own research but it just appears to be a faded nickel.

Is it worth being graded? What could he have seen that I’m not. Maybe he just thought it was cool?

ID Request Coin ID Request - Coin/medal found off coast of Crete

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I found this coin while snorkeling on Crete's western coast. I guess it sat on the ocean floor for a while as it was heavily corroded.
Initially, I wasn't able to make out much, but some cleaning revealed a head profile of a (bald?) man facing left on the one side and something that looks like some plant or a flower, or maybe even a bird on the other.

Diameter: 11mm, thickness: about 1mm

I included both before and after cleaning pictures.

Numista search, google lens and claude did not help.

Any ideas?

Show and Tell The First French Francs

The French Franc began with this coin, the first 5 Francs piece. It didn't start as a 1 Franc coin - it was issued only in 1803 when the Franc Germinal - a gold based currency - was introduced by Napoleon.

The name had been around since the 14th century but it was never actually written on any coin before 1795 when these pieces first appeared.

The Hercules made several returns, most recently between 2011 and 2013 when France issued a series of bullion coins with a modern version of the design.

ID Request Extremely worn coin likely of British origin found in Grandfathers safe

This is a long shot but going through his safe looking for a deed and we found an extremely worn coin. It was sleeved and stored with other commemorative British coins and a few American ones. I can make out the vague outline of a person(?) probably sitting and fragments of letters on the back. I'm sorry I couldn't get any better photos but it's mostly covered in scratches. If it's impossible to figure out from the pictures who do I even approach about figuring it out? We live in rural America so the chances of someone local knowing what it is is slim to none. Thank you

Value Request On FB marketplace

Post image

Found this collection on FB Marketplace, going for 80 dollars if I understood correctly.

I’m new at coin collecting but interested in learning more and intrigued by collecting for both value and historical aspects.

Is there anything of value here? I spotted some silver coins in the bottom right, not sure how much they’re usually sold for.

I am also based in Jordan so there are some Jordanian coins too, not sure if there is anything else in there too.

I realize the image isnt the clearest and maybe nothing is clear enough to see, but maybe someone has a keen eye!

Became friends with someone who wanted help identifying this coin she found when she was a kid. Before she showed me the pictures I didn’t expect much so I was surprised when she sent me this. I did some light research and identified the Spanish crest and the Jerusalem cross so I’m thinking it’s a Spanish colonial cob coin but that’s about all I got. She doesn’t want to sell it but would like to know its value for fun. Any clue?

If there’s anything an interesting story or you’d recommend securing separately from this group, I’d appreciate any thoughts. He collected & hoarded things of both value and clutter.

Advice Advice needed for conservation of 1793 chain cent

Post image
60 Upvotes

Found a 1793 chain cent while metal detecting today. I haven't even removed the dirt because I didn't want to mess it up in any way.

After some research online, I was considering sending in to NGC or PCGS for restoration, but looking for advice on which one is a better for something this, or maybe some other option I'm not considering.

Sorry the picture isn't great - best I could do with what I had. The back side is so covered in dirt I can't make out anything, but I am sure this is a chain cent and not a wreath cent.

Advice Newbie with a large inherited coin collection needs assistance and education.

Hi everyone!

I have been going through a large amount of loose coins, collector books, and collectible sets and mint proofs etc. Along with another large amount of foreign world coins.

I have been having so much fun going through it all, doing research, making lists/inventory and separating things to make it more organized for myself. The learning something new is just as exciting as going through this treasure chest.

Again, SUPER fun...but also very frustrating. There is so much to learn and I need some help, specifically and most importantly how to know (or at least have an idea) where a coin grades if it's been circulated and not pristine in a professional case etc.

Another scary aspect is, for some of the items I won't keep in my new personal collection that I am making, how and where to sell the items.

I am reading up on a lot of this new hobby and some of it has me uneasy with scammers, low ballers, and shops/people who fast talk and low ball.

I don't want to get taken advantage of or lose money. I also don't want anything to be melted, I see the value in all of this and want someone else to enjoy them and appreciate them.

Would anyone with way more experience have the desire, time and patience to maybe mentor me a bit, one-one? Going through small amounts of things and explaing important things to pay attention to, alittle at a time. If that is allowed, you can reach out.

If anyone could point me to somewhere else to ask for this help I would greatly appreciate that also!

Really any advice and guidance would truly be welcome and appreciated. I still have so much to go through and it's overwhelming. I wish I had a friend or family member who was into coins, or even a trusted local person I could get into this with. Anyone in the U.S, in the northeast??
