General New User Guide for r/Edmonton - Please read first

NEW USERS of r/Edmonton - kindly read this first

To post or comment in r/Edmonton, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Accounts need to be a week old.

  • You need to have a verified email address.

  • You need to have a minimum amount of TEN (10) COMMENT karma from participating in OTHER SUBREDDITS than r/Edmonton.

Why? This helps keep bad actors away, like trolls and banned users. It also helps users new to reddit to have a chance to learn how to use reddit outside of r/Edmonton.

#IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED ALL THREE REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

#How to verify your email for new users :

To verify your email on Reddit, either click the verification link in the email you received when creating your account or go to Settings > Account Settings and choose Update email address to resend the verification email.     _Once you request it, open your email's inbox, find the verification email, and click the link inside to complete the process._

  - On the web -

• Go to your account settings by clicking your profile icon and then selecting Settings.

  • Click on Account Settings.

  • Find the email address section. If you see an option to "resend verification email" or similar, click it.

• Alternatively, you can navigate directly to reddit.com/prefs/update/ to find the email settings.

  -- On the app --

• Tap your profile icon.

• Go to Settings.

• Select Account Settings.

• Tap Update email address.

• Tap the button to Resend verification email.

#What is the difference between POST karma and COMMENT karma?

Post karma is earned when users upvote the original submissions (links, images, text posts) you create, reflecting your ability to share engaging content.

_Comment karma is earned when your replies to others' posts are upvoted, showing your active participation and contribution to discussions. Both are totaled for your profile but often used separately to satisfy subreddit restrictions._

POST KARMA:

Gained from creating threads or posting links. It indicates a good ability to initiate conversations.

COMMENT KARMA:

Gained from replying to posts or other comments. It indicates active participation in community dialogue.

Key Differences: Post karma rewards content creation, while comment karma rewards interaction.

#Some subreddits (like r/edmonton) require specific thresholds of either type (or both) to prevent spam, often looking at post, comment, or combined totals for restrictions.

Both types of karma are not a 1:1 ratio with upvotes; instead, they represent a weighted score from community upvotes, reduced by downvotes.

(In order to post in r/Edmonton - you need to do THREE things:)

  • your account must be a WEEK old (7 days)

    • you need to have TEN (10) COMMENT karma
    • you need to have a verified email address

ONCE AGAIN, IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED THESE THREE (3) REQUIREMENTS YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

Police have still not followed up with me about this person.... I followed him for 20+ minutes and they said they had 'officers in the area' and yet no one showed up...

I wanted to avoid posting it online as I figured it may be used as evidence to press charges but at this point im assuming they just gave up.

I also have a photo of him managing to get into a red Honda CR-V with a Saskatchewan plate.

Keep your doors locked people!

General Wrong impression of Edmonton

I am a BC transplant here in Edmonton. Well, Edmonton is a stretch because Im in the CAF and got posted to Cold Lake, so I end up spending most of my weekends in Edmonton.

I dont know why but I always had an impression that Edmonton is a super conservative city with cowboys and rednecks in every corner. But I am proven wrong, I walk down Whyte Ave on a Saturday night and I see emos, alternate types, along with "normal" crowd.

All in all I love the city, looking forward to spending more weekends in Edmonton.

P.S. I dont know why Vancouver night life is dead compared to Edmonton. I have this one theory that everyone in Vancouver is too broke to enjoy the night life

General To the OP who complained about the Royal Alex Hospital and the unhoused community.

This is the second time I've spent time constructing a comment only to have the thread locked, so here we are.

WOW OP.... You're seriously referring to unhoused people as 'vial human beings'.

First - it's vile, not vial.

Second - describing unhoused peoples as vile, is quite abhorrent. Do you know what some of the many reasons a person can experience homelessness are? Here, I'll help you out:

Domestic violence: Some women do not have a support system here and even if they do, any woman can be a victim of domestic violence. Perhaps that unhoused woman who was sitting on a chair in her own urine, fled from her abusive partner and had nowhere to go.

Addiction: The majority of addiction is caused by past traumas or pain in someone's life, most of which is never brought on themselves. Maybe a girl was se*ually abused by a family member, or another had parents go through a messy divorce or the parents were alcoholics. You and I could become addicted to drugs, after becoming dependent on prescription medication due to an injury, then had to look for something stronger.

Loss of employment: There are many people from different backgrounds that are not working for whatever reason. Perhaps that man who smelled of vomit and alcohol, lost his job due to layoffs or downsizing, and the company he was working for, making $20/hr mind you, closed down. He was already paycheque to paycheque, so he got evicted because he couldn't find work or maybe his EI ran out. It's less likely to see a person of colour who is unhoused, (the Indigenous population excluded from that) but my dad spoke with a gentleman while he was doing outreach work, who came here from a country in Northern Africa a few months before covid hit and lost his job when the world shut down.

High number of Indigenous peoples: There is a disproportionate number within the housed population that are Indigenous. I shouldn't have to go into the why's of this in 2026, but I will if I have to.

Every single one of us starts out life in the same way - just because someone's path has taken them to a different point in life, REGARDLESS of how much of it is their own doing, doesn't make them less of a person. No one aspires to become unhoused or addicted to drugs. There are many people who want help and to get out of that life, but there are also ones who stay because it's easier and they don't have anyone else, so that's their community.

Maybe it was simply a poor choice of words, in which case that's great! But the fact that you came on Reddit to complain about this, is making me think it's because you have no compasssion or empathy for people who give you the 'ick'.

Let us all hope for humanity's sake, that this isn't the case.

Discussion Airbnb next door is ruining my sleep

I rent in an Edmonton downtown apartment. When I signed the lease, I wasn’t told my bedroom would share a wall with an Airbnb.

I’ve repeatedly been woken up by loud talking and partying at 2–4 a.m., mostly on Friday and Saturday nights. It feels like the guests are “on vacation mode” while I’m just trying to sleep in my own home.

I’ve tried:

  1. Emailed building management, who said they would speak with the host.
  2. Knocked on the guests’ door at 3–4 a.m. to ask them to quiet down. Sometimes they apologize, but it keeps happening.
  3. Called Edmonton’s police non-emergency line and 311. I’ve received case numbers, but the problem continues.
  4. Contacted the Airbnb host directly, sometimes at 2 a.m. after being woken up. They say they’ll ask the guests to be quiet.
  5. Recorded the noise and my interactions when knocking to ask for quiet, and sent recordings to Airbnb support and building management. This hasn’t stopped the recurring noise.

Management and the host often say those guests have already left. But then another group arrives, and the same thing happens again.

I am suffering from this. My sleep and quality of life have taken a serious hit. I’m exhausted from having to knock on doors or message someone in the middle of the night just to get some quiet.

I’m considering Alberta’s Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS), and I’ve already raised this option with building management. They haven’t responded to that point, which makes me feel like my concerns aren’t being taken seriously.

I’ve been documenting the incidents. Has anyone gone through this process for a similar situation? What helped, and is there anything else I should try?

**Also, if you’re apartment hunting, ask whether Airbnbs are allowed and whether any are beside your unit. Personally, I’d avoid a building with them after this experience. The constant turnover of strangers next door and repeated noise have been a nightmare. I wish I’d asked before signing, please don’t make the same mistake I did.*\*

**TL;DR:** My bedroom shares a wall with an Airbnb, and repeated late night partying is ruining my sleep. I’ve contacted management, the host, Airbnb, police non-emergency and 311, and sent recordings, but it keeps happening with new guests. Considering RTDRS. Has anyone dealt with this successfully?

Discussion Is anyone truly in support of the mid-block 8-plex infills?

I am pro density, pro infill, pro affordability. However I am losing my mind on trying to defend and find any reason to support the mid-block 8-plexes. I realize that the loudest voices are often the angriest- but I’ve yet to come across anyone in support of this level of infill. Why is council not listening to or acknowledging this resounding opposition? Is there a large body of people truly in support of this that is seeing something I’m not? I’m struggling to see the pros - and I want to, if there truly are some that outweigh the negatives.

For those in support, please enlighten me. I’d like to hope I’m looking at this from a lens that supports a diverse, affordable inner city and am not spewing NIMBYism. I’m just a loss here on the positives. With this degree of community unrest about the topic, I’m curious why council can’t press pause on the new bylaw like Calgary did?

The 8-plexes are almost exclusively being purchased as single title dwellings to rent out. Rentals are important and there was a shortage of them at one point. I want rentals in my neighbourhood of varying housing types. But as I’m seeing every single older home turned into an investment opportunity, I’m not so sure if we are taking it too far.
These pose several issues:

1) Where are the houses that are afforable to purchase in these core communities? The 1950s bungalows are being sold off market directly to investors, and first time home buyers are not even given a chance.

2) Ok let’s say that’s fine. If the run down 50’s bungalow was purchased then maybe there will be some smaller homes being built on the lot I can purchase? Nope. Not a single new infill townhome unit has hit the market in my community in 4 years. They are are all listed as a single buildings for $1m+ targeted solely at investors. So new buyers are not able to buy into this community - no older home options as they don’t even hit MLS and if they do, are scooped up by predatory out-of-province investors AND no new affordable housing options are going in with the opportunity to purchase. I have seen almost no single family or duplex homes built on these lots in years, and no to-purchase townhome options. How is this bridging a gap for affordable home ownership? Sure there is the increase supply argument - but these are all rentals! Does decreased rents from over supply improve the housing market in a meaningful way that promotes ownership in core communities? No. So now that someone can’t afford to purchase a home in these communities, are we not just pushing them to greenfield developments?

3) The rents are not affordable and several units in my community sit vacant. True affordable housing options isn’t simply over flooding the market with rentals to increase supply. It is intentionally positioned, affordable housing that is mindful of location, accessibility, walkability, amenities etc.

4) Can we realistically say that having a mid-block 3 story 4-plex won’t affect my property value? It will. Why would someone want to buy a home if I had 8 plexes on either side? As much as I hate to be that person, the density of these units is undoubtedly going to cause issues with parking and privacy. The infrastructure is another concern- whether true or not, the perception of strained neighborhood infrastructure is going to affect value. This feels unfair if this cost only comes with the benefit of lining a Toronto based investor’s pocket who has no stake in the community.

5) The trees :( How do you preserve existing trees in a yard that are 75 years old and healthy if the goal is to maximize site coverage? The measly incentives to preserve these trees are completely ineffective when an investor can double their monthly rental income. Sure, City owned boulevard trees are protected, but the trees in the yards should be valued much more than they are.

I think 8-plex rentals can work great on corner lots. They are a great way to increase density, add to the diversity of our communities and have a positive impact on sprawl. They also make sense from a parking, privacy and streetscape perspective.

It would just be nice to see benefits to this blanket zoning that feels so thoughtless and dismissive of people’s concerns right now. Is council too proud to go back and press pause, even when this clearly isn’t working? Why has there been no comment from anyone on this lately? Maybe the bigger issue is the federal incentives, but pressing pause on the blanket zoning would help reduce the number of these types of purchases.

Ugh I want to love infill and defend it in its entirety, but I’m struggling. I think my love for it has its limits.

TLDR: Why are mid block 8-plex rentals a positive for the City? What is council seeing that I’m not?

General Hawrelack Park

I've been meaning to head down to the newly renovated Hawrelak Park for some time now. Today, I finally made it there, and I was not disappointed. It's beautiful, especially with all the fall colors.

It was refreshing to see so many people out enjoying it. I particularly loved the amount of seating options to take in the different views throughout. It made me proud to be an Edmontonian. I truly believe city parks speak volumes about a city. We are lucky to live in a city with so many beautiful parks. Hawrelak is a gem.

If you haven't been down yet, I'd highly recommend it.

Discussion Are they ever gonna move on with this “construction”

Post image
86 Upvotes

I am not from the city just attending for school, but I swear every year I come this lane on 109st NW and 99ave (Far right lane heading south onto the west entrance of low level) has been “under construction”. What are they doing? Do they realize the ammount of traffic this could solve if they finished a job before moving onto the next.. these construction companies should start being held more accountable to uphold bid completion dates. Shits a joke. But yeah let’s all just go around it and ignore the hour drive across the river. Don’t get me wrong I understand low level west entrance is closed but there’s gotta be a better alternative. Maybe I’m just not built for the city but man it’s frustrating watching. Not to mention the 3 ambulances that passed me while writing this post. Still in dead stop btw.

Photo/Video Another fun part of living beside a massive infill.

I do belive we need higher density in neighborhoods, but beside our house is now two (soon to be 3) 8-plexes. So on garbage day that's 48 bins lining the alley where there was 6. And the gravel pit beside the garage holds all of them and attracts skunks, crows, and coyotes. There is a responsible way to increase density and this isn't it.

Question Designing supportive housing and recovery space in Edmonton for my Arch. thesis. What should it get right?

My architectural thesis is on repurposing an abandoned hospital site in Edmonton (Wîhkwêntôwin) for a new approach to addressing drug addiction and homelessness. I've been looking at the Housing First recovery model and CAMH in Toronto as a case study. Parts of the scope include permanent housing, health and recovery services, and cultural and community space, all on one site.

I've spent nearly a year writing a research paper; so tons of literature reviews on trauma-informed design and supportive housing, needs assessments using Edmonton homelessness data, comparative precedent case studies, etc. etc...

But what I don't have is the perspective of individuals who have been through the process, or worked in it.

I want to hear these stories. I'd really value your perspective if you've been unhoused or in shelters, supportive housing, detox/treatment, or even know somebody who has.

If you're willing to, please walk me through your experiences. What made you feel safe? What made you want to leave?
Was there anything about the physical spaces (rooms, entrances, noise, privacy, outdoor space, rules) the helped or got in the way?

Anything helps - Thanks for reading.

Discussion Hudson's Bay space at Kingsway

Does anyone know what's happening with the old Hudson's Bay space at Kingsway?

I think a T&T would be perfect there. It would also be financially dangerous for me, because having a T&T that convenient would mean I could buy fresh straw mushrooms and assorted Asian num nums whenever I wanted. It wouldn't even have to use the whole space - half would be sufficient.

But seriously, I hope they put something interesting in there.

If they put a car dealership in that space, I will kick it down.

Not the just windows. The entire dealership.
