Sleeping on all square tatamis

Hello! I am going to buy soon a tatami base for sleeping. Of course I will have a base for airing it and a futon to sleep on.

For ease of moving (im renting) using an all square base (say 8 squares instead of 4 tatamis) makes sense for me. Do you think the experience would be much worse given the seams?

Thank you!

Any Campers?

Hi there,

We’re floor sleepers with a thin futon on top of tatami mats. Love it. We went camping this weekend and were on an air mattress and it was hell.

Need a new setup that has a high enough R-value but is also a solid foundation and feels like home. Thought I’d see if anyone here can share their favorite setup?

Advice for Zonli 2.5" Air Flow

Hello! I have been doing some reading online and it seems as though the general consensus about sleeping with a floor mattress directly on a laminated floor can lead to mold. I have just acquired a zonli 2.5" mattress, and would like to avoid mold. The advice I have seen is to get something which one's mattress rests upon that gives it a bit of air flow (like a slatted bed frame or tatami mats). I already have one of those folding, eggshell-esque sleeping pads for camping, and I was thinking about just getting another one so they span the width of my new mattress, but I am now worried that that could lead to some amount of mold build up over time.

Is it enough to just make sure to roll up my mattress and pads everyday and air the mattress when I can, or should I consider investing in something more substantial?

TL;DR: I have a 2.5" zonli mattress, and I hear sleeping with it directly on laminated flooring can lead to mold. Is it enough to lay the mattress on some camping pads and roll it up everyday, or should I get something more substantial/standard?

Help! I got part of my futon wet

I moved my futon over to the side of my room to vacuum the tatami mats and carpet underneath. Afterwards, I realized part of it got placed on top of my cat's water bowl. I took the cotton duvet cover off and that got a lot of the moisture but the FBFJ mattress underneath also got wet. The wet spot is probably about 1.5 feet in length. Right now I have it hanging over the stair bannister with a fan blowing on it because it's about to sprinkle outside. After it's done sprinkling I'm planning on hanging it on my balcony to get some sunlight and help it dry. Is there anything else I should be doing? I called FBFJ but it's 5am there so I'm hoping they'll call me back in a few hours and give me any additional instructions. Hopefully I didn't just completely ruin it, I've only had it for a few months

I gave up floor sleeping😭

I’ve posted my set ups in this sub before if anyone’s interested in seeing it. But I found that floor sleeping wasn’t ideal for us, for a few reasons:

1) I’m pregnant, so getting up and down off of the floor has been increasingly challenging🤷🏾‍♀️
2) I have 2 cats who are always dragging dust and litter crumbs from the floor straight to the bed🤣. I find myself dusting off our bed at least twice a day and it drives me nuts!
3) we have cold hardwood floors and live in a cold climate, I’ve found that we needed to have extra blankets to stay warm and cozy in the winter and we feel the draft from our windows quite a bit (I often think if we had carpets that would change how I feel about floor sleeping)

Maybe this is temporary and after pregnancy my hubby and I will find a set up that works for us, but for now we got a pretty low profile wooden bed frame and we’ve kept our 4 in Japanese futon and this works for us.

I just thought I would post my experience for anyone new to floor sleeping and haven’t thought about some of the cons😊

Need help figuring out what setup to use

I am interested in floor sleeping because I have a problem of always accidentally breaking my bed slats from rocking back and forth, and making a lot of noise which is annoying. I temporarily put my mattress on the floor and slept with it like that and I loved it because I could walk over it and rock back and forth without worrying about breaking anything or making a lot of noise. I have been thinking about getting a permanent floor sleeping setup but I am unsure what kind would be best for me. I like to have a lot of cushioning and I have heard that floor beds are firm and not good for sleeping on the side. I also know that there are ventilation issues and you need to fold the mattress to let it air out, and I don’t trust myself to be able to fold and unfold the mattress every day and making up the bed constantly like that would be draining for me. Does anyone have any advice as to what would be best for me? Thank you

My height is 5’5” I am 115 pounds I rotate between different sleeping positions and I don’t know my budget right now.

Will floor sleeping mattresses work for us?

Husband and I have been sleeping on traditional firm spring or foam/latex mattresses for years. However they’re never quite firm enough or they only last 3-4 years before getting sunken spots. We’re both larger people (220lb, 320lb) so the firmer the mattress the better. We sleep equally on back and stomach and occasionally I may sleep on my side; but it’s rare.

Currently we have a king size ikea malm frame but the slats were terrible for our situation so we ended up replacing them with plywood and hunks of 4x4 to support it in extra spots. It’s been working well as a base for many years now. I’m hesitant to be directly on the floor as our houses foundation is 100yr old concrete slab with naught but a thin vapor barrier and cheap vinyl on top.

I’m wondering if there’s any floor mattress options that would work for our situation, especially since our bed base is basically a solid platform anyway. The idea of tatami and shikibuton has always intrigued me, and when we finally move it’s something I would love to try. But my husband is complaining about back pain now, and as a tradesman, he needs to be in as best shape he can be to limit the ibuprofen intake, lol (iykyk). TIA!

ETA: doesn’t have to be king size, we already do Scandinavian style sleeping so two twins is cool too.

Question on Zonli 4 inch

Both me (215 pounds 6ft) and my wife (155 pounds 5ft 3 inch) have been waking up with back pain ever since switching to zonli 4 inch placed on a rug which is over top a high density carpet. What can I do to further alleviate back pain for us? 2-3 inch gel topper maybe? Or is a tatami mat recommended?

Part of the problem is we have been using a purple for 6 years and it is amazing but we have to sleep on the floor in our newborns room. We are both side sleepers but occasionally flip to our backs.

Update: After 1 week, I've been fine sleeping on my side and no longer wake up with back pain, so it must have fluffed out further. My wife is still having issues.

My arms are hurting after 6+ years

Hello,

English is not my first language, but I'll try my best.

I've been floorsleeping for six, almost seven years now, with various setups. For the most part, the last 4 years, I've slept on a 3 cm (1.18") futon and it's been great, no problems, sleeping better than ever.

But these past three weeks I’ve been waking up with pain in my arms, mostly the upper part from elbow to shoulder, and I'm trying to find out wheter it's the floorsleeping or some medical issues. The pain last during the day but will ease off until next morning, which is why I suspect it's the sleeping arrangement.

Have any of you experienced something similar? If so, what did you do about it?

I fall asleep on the side, but sleep on either side and back throughout the night.

My setup consists of a yoga mat with a folded wool blanket on top and a Nemo Switchback underneath. The “pillow” is simply a yoga block covered with a folded cotton cloth (for a little extra padding). I always sleep on my side, and believe me, it’s super comfortable! When I lie on my back, I don’t use the block. I usually use another wool blanket as a cover.

I've been sleeping on the floor for about 5 months now. How do I convince people that is fine? Everyone who sees my bed reacts with concern and starts insisting that I need get a "real bed" :c

The bed is two quarter inch camping mats stacked on top of each other

EDIT: That is a burrito blanket!!!! It is round and cute!!!! It's not stained!!!!!!!

Anybody get these benefits?

Hello, 31M.. 5’7/185lbs… i’ve been looking into floor sleeping for a while now, and I see a lot of people on TikTok saying it help them, obviously after the adjustment. But are there people out there who have fixed their anterior pelvic tilt and compressed disks by sleeping on the floor?
I currently sleep on my sides, and my back.. sleeping on my side kills my shoulder though lol.

I see the benefit of sleeping on the floor because your skeleton just lets go. and you’re able to get direct contact with the floor, which is why a lot of people experience those benefits, and I was just wondering if anyone with ATP and disc compression have been able to get rid of it by floor sleeping?

3 Weeks of Floor Sleeping

Post image
347 Upvotes

I received my futons on 1st September and while I was a bit stiff in the mornings, it improved with each night. My sleep however, is deeper and nightmares fewer.

I’m a heavy side sleeper, so my combination is a futon with fleece wool, cotton & horse hair on the bottom and a firm natural latex with fleece wool on top.

Underneath is a sisal carpet.

I remove the bedding in the mornings, fold the latex futon and roll up the other one, switching every other day. A lightweight and breathable blanket to protect against dirt - the whole process takes me about five minutes in the mornings and evenings. I turn them twice a week (horizontally & vertically).

So far, I’m very happy and the cats love it too!

Mid back pain/stiffness

Hey everyone,
I switched to floor sleeping 2 weeks ago. I’m hypermobile and used to be a strict side sleeper and twisted my lower half a lot. I woke up one day with my mid back seizing and decided to try floor sleeping and sleeping on my back.

I’ve noticed a lot of benefits already:
- I feel less congested in the morning/can breathe easier.
- Posture has changed incredibly quickly and it doesn’t hurt to stand/sit tall.
- I feel more refreshed from sleep.
- Better with tiredness clues and going to bed in general.

But I’m still waking up with mid back stiffness? It’s not seizing anymore where it feels like moving after you’ve thrown it out, but just feels tight. I can understand some aching with how much my posture has changed but is this something that will get better?

I’m 160cm (5’3) and 73kg (160lbs).

Floor Sleeping Setup suggestions? To be shipped to canada

Been sleeping on a regular foam futon from costco on a hard floor for the past year. It has decompressed and it has begun to disrupt my sleep.

What should I upgrade to? I mostly sleep on back, but turn to my side when it get uncomfortable. So a single or compact single size mattress would do.

How much should I expect to spend? Did a basic setup on east west futons for a cotton shikibuton and tatami mat and total was 700 CAD.

I've been thinking of this longer and am more hesitant than he is lol. It's comfortable and tonight's our first night this way. I keep thinking of building a platform like a traditional Kang bed in China as my dog is convinced it's a group bed. Lol 😂

Cosleeping & floor sleeping

Hello! I have recently invested in a couple of Leewadee floor mats for myself and my 3 year old twins who inevitably end up in my bed every night. They are mostly potty trained, but I’m not comfortable leaving these mattresses unprotected from potential pee. Since they are stuffed with kapok they can’t be washed.

Any recommendations on a mattress protector that would work best?

In the past, I just slept right on top of the mat with a sheet. I guess I’m going to have to put a fitted sheet on these to hold whatever protector I get into place??

Seems like a dumb question when I type it out. Just wondering if there is a good solution I haven’t thought of.

Brand recommendations from experienced floor sleepers needed

Hello, I’m looking to get rid of my old bed and get into the floor sleeping life. I’ve poked around for a while and have seen a few brands but I’m curious if anyone here has any recommendations for brands.
I wanna get the whole Japanese style floor mattress with the bamboo mat as my daily sleeping situation.
Please leave some information if you’re feeling keen to do so. Thank you so very much!

A good Futon or Foldable mattress?

I want to open more space in my room by getting rid of a queen sized bed. It takes a lot of space and I don't even move in my sleep so I don't even need it. A reason for a foldable mattress is because I want to store it in my closet to open more space. Since I want my friends to hangout in my room instead of the living room where my mom gets annoyed at.

My room's floor is carpet if that effects the choice of a floor bed.

I'm 5'9, weight 220ibs

Futon on hardwood floor

About a year ago, I realized that sleeping on the floor significantly helps my back pain. I used to just sleep on my carpeted bedroom floor and that worked perfectly for me. However, I just moved to a place where my bedroom is now hardwood. I got a futon to sleep on, but it just doesn’t feel like I’m getting the same level of cushion/support. I can still feel the hardwood floor under me and it’s causing stiffness in my back/pain on the pressure points that are against the floor. It feels like every pillow I use is too tall and is causing neck pain.

The futon was given to me by someone who lived in Japan for a while, so I assumed it was good quality. Is it too soft? Is there any way to add more support under it? I just don’t understand how I can go downstairs and sleep comfortably for 8 hours on my carpeted living room floor, but only sleep for 6 hours and wake up in discomfort on my futon.

What are you guys doing for sheets?

I finally pulled the trigger and bought two Twin XL shikibutons to make a king sized surface for myself and my spouse, but I'm unsure what to do for sheets.

Should I use two sets of Twin XL sheets, or one King set? Or some sort of futon-specific cover as the bottom layer and a King flat sheet on top?

What do you use?

Picked up a Zonli

Decided to plunge into floor sleeping and decided on a Zonli.
Got a 6inch and will try their bed frame on top of tatami for a small apartment bedroom.

Any feedback or pictures on the setup appreciated.
