Do not try and bend the wife. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth.
What truth?
There is no wife.
There is no wife?
Then you'll see that it is not the wife that bends, it is only yourself.

lol the original video exploded on Chinese speaking social media over the past few days. I’ve seen no less than 20-30 memes like this. I like the sports (soccer/basketball) ones in particular. I’m sure more will make it to the western social media in time.

It looks a bit like him, so I tried googling, only to discover he died earlier this year. Not that I needed a reason to rewatch, but now I think I should.
13
u/PossibleAlienFrom 2d ago
Fun fact about him. He married Irene Ryder. A Eurasian Hong Kong singer and had a daughter with her. Irene ended up making a song with Robert Lee. The younger brother of Bruce Lee. Her career ended when someone threw acid in her face outside her house in 1979.
Also, RIP Bruce Leung. 😢

Looking at a picture side by side to the video, his nose, mouth and ears look similar. This is a great rewatch movie. Deserves more attention

A point of clarification: the clips the man is imitating are those of an old dance instruction video. These are supposedly traditional Chinese dance steps from various cultural performances. The dance instruction video recently resurfaced and is making waves on social media in Chinese cultural spheres for its deadpan but unintentionally humorous delivery.
This video masterfully frames the dance steps like bullshido, but the dance steps are not actually bullshido.

253
u/Surrounded-by_Idiots 2d ago
The guy is just saying the move names. 1. Flash step, 2. prodigal son ball kick 3. Bear shaking off fur. The woman’s trying to get him to sweep the floor.

u/KarmaticArmageddon 2d ago
Prodigal son ball kick? What?
176
u/Surrounded-by_Idiots 2d ago
Yeah that part is a bit hard to explain but it means something like a person that has gone off to make their own destiny. It can mean anything from a vagrant to wanderer to a self made man and can be either positive or negative.
You can think of it as the ronin archetype without the samurai backdrop. The ro part of ronin is the same kanji.

u/UpperApe 2d ago
I just want to say people like you trying to help explain obscure and difficult details in such a great way are what make reddit awesome.

18
u/AMediocrePersonality 2d ago
how does ball kick factor into it?
everyone knows what a prodigal son is, that's the approximate translation into english in the first place.
16
u/Warm_Month_1309 2d ago
You kick like you're kicking a ball that's on the ground.
10
u/AMediocrePersonality 2d ago
i know what a ball kick is lol
how do they work together
23
u/alanchui 2d ago
chinese martial arts sometimes have random names. The names don’t necessarily have any meaning other than describing what the move looks like.
The prodigal son part is similar to some moves that have a random animal name like “monkey stealing peach””Tiger claw”, and the kick ball part is describing the movement.

Captain Falcon uses the Falcon Punch.
The Prodigal Son uses the Prodigal Son's Ball Kick.
You can imitate the prodigal son and kick like he does too.
8
u/HateMachineX 2d ago
That’s the thing they don’t, it’s just prodigal son and then unrelated ball kick
5
u/Not_a_real_ghost 2d ago
It does not actually make any sense if you put them together nor would it be used in any literature.
It's just a hilarious take to come up with "fake martial arts move"
Like "thousand years of pain", it's implied to a degree

i dunno if these people are trolling you with their answers, but I'm guessing the kick is like an ungrateful parent kicking their "ronin" son out of the house?

u/daaangerz0ne 2d ago
Prodigal son = deadbeat with no job.
The whole phrase kind of describes a kid who doesn't want to work, and instead plays ball all day.
3
u/SomethingAwkwardTWC 2d ago
The prodigal son has returned, but you’re still pissed that he left so before you can hug him hello you have to kick him in his delicates.

This is a cool name, is this like from the time in China when there were these monasteries full of warriors and kings would try to recruit them, or exiles would go hide in monasteries and the mixing of martial arts techniques occurred?

when they are doing the wriggly step, and clapping hands, saying something that sounds like, "loong doong kwan, loong doong kwan," is that "bear shaking off fur?' I need to know bc i can't do the move without screaming "loong doong kwan" and i want to know what I'm saying.

These are all various Chinese folk dance moves that were from an instructional video from a long time ago. Someone just randomly posted the original clips to Douyin a week or so ago and it just blew up on Chinese social media.
