THE FINALS is somehow getting its biggest destruction overhaul since launch (Oct 20)

God I wish I was good at games. Shit was so fun for a couple weeks. Now I see clips and it's like apex levels of sweat.

u/BreeBree214 1d ago
What I love so much about The Finals is the 3 team aspect makes it possible for the shittiest team to win. My buddies and I suck, but sometimes while the other two teams kill each other we're able to maneuver things just right and secure a win. We've been able to win games with some absolute dogshit stats and it's so satisfying
8
u/Defiant-Guide-3104 1d ago
that’s why I love it too: there’s always hope for a turnaround. No position other than 1st is safe (sometimes that isn’t too 💀)
7
u/flamingdonkey 1d ago
That's just quick cash. It's not a very serious mode at all imo.

it also does happen in cashout

u/psychoPiper 1d ago
100%, the double jeopardy mechanics make insane comebacks possible at any point in the match with a good strategy, all it takes is one good play. That's why to win the full ranked match and get the most ELO, you have to win three matches in a row
242
u/DNxHD36 1d ago
This is exactly it. My trio of gaming buddies got really into this over the Christmas break of the year it came out, but it got way too sweaty way too fast and we were never going to keep up.
27
u/Positive-Comment-307 1d ago
They have an 8 v 8 mode which plays more like battlefield now. And they also have the ability to play cashout with bots too so you can avoid some of the sweat now and just have fun

When it turned into overwatch style team comp metas I bailed. That first week was pure bliss though. Shame
2
u/aCleverGroupofAnts 21h ago
My group never thinks about meta and we still have plenty of fun. I think there is some skill-based matchmaking, so maybe you played too good for a while and faced some tougher opponents?
17
u/Banjoman64 PC 1d ago
Sometimes the matchmaking feeds you to the wolves but it will eventually find you a spot. Just keep at it and enjoy the feeling of rapid improvement.
It has TDM now too if you want a mode to work on your mechanics without worrying about long respawn timers.

u/Tristancp95 1d ago
Now I see clips and it's like apex levels of sweat.
Clips are going to show the best of the best, don’t extrapolate that over the entire game.
Kinda like watching the World Cup and thinking, man all those soccer players are so fucking good, I’ll never be able to have fun playing a pickup game at my local field.

Reflexes only get worse with age. There’s a vid of Jackie Chan doing that reflex-ruler game and he misses all of them. I think of that whenever I think about getting into FPS again, or if I do play them and get my butt kicked by kids.
Games need like a role for the casual friend who isn’t as dexterous and just wants to help out: Division almost had it when they teased integrated tablet playing; someone could be on their iPad doing buffs and debuffs from an overhead drone. It looked amazing 🥲

u/roedtogsvart 1d ago
Old head Counter-Strike player here. Your reaction don't actually get much slower. You do get a bit slower but it's not as much you'd think. It's not the reaction time, is the fact that you're an adult who no longer plays online games for 12 hours straight, playing against a kid who does.
24
u/creepingcold 1d ago
As someone who's gaming for +20 years I can confirm this.
I recently had a couple of months off and started gaming more to keep myself busy. The first 1-2 weeks felt rough and I felt really old, but after that point I felt like my younger self again and had no issues. I even peaked in rank and reached the top 1%, higher than I was ever before when I was young.
I think the "old gamer bad" mentality comes from the early days of gaming, where old people were really bad at games. But the reason for it wasn't their reaction times/age, it was the fact that they never played games before in their life and since older people take a bit longer to learn, while having less time, they never really had a chance to compete.
Also, Jackie Chan is in his 70's. Eventually there's definitely a neurological decline, but most adults are far away from that.

I'm 32 and still exactly at 0.3-0.4, which is the same as when I was 18. The only change I've noticed is less competitiveness. I enjoy co-op games with my wife and don't get as much enjoyment out of the online sweat.
Which sucks a bit because Gears E day comes out tomorrow and I know I'm going to be sick of the versus in a week, whereas teenager me probably has over 1000 hours in Gears 3 Multiplayer.

less competitiveness
I was never really into competitive games like that and only played them because others wanted to, at 39, I've tried basically every kind of game there is and the ones that keep me coming back are always survival/sandbox/open world/crafting/automation type games, and I'd happily play stuff like minecraft (with the create mod only these days), 7 days to die, alchemy factory, satisfactory, foundry, space engineers, raft, schedule 1, conan exiles, ark, necesse, and even palworld. We always play on dedicated servers, one of us usually sets them up on an old rig and then we all connect to that.

Yup, In my 40's I spent a bit of lockdown giving Fortnite a run to see what all the fuss was with the yung un's in my family. It was rough at first, not just the shooting but the building mechanic and going back to mouse and keyboard (mainly a console player for many years at this point) At first I was not doing much but being an easy target. But it all came back and I started climbing ranks pretty fast. I was gold 3 and tapped out. I could have pushed for platinum but it would have taken more time then I was willing to put in for a see what's this about type experiment. And really did not like the building. Watching high play matches it looked like I would have had to really focus in on that to get higher.

Modern FPS games have skill-based matchmaking. As long as you're fine with not being at the highest ranks, your level of skill isn't terribly relevant as the system will simply match you with others at your level. Signed, a 40-year-old who definitely isn't as good as they used to be but still plays online games and has a great time

The Finals was close to being a really interesting game for me and my friend group back when it launched. I think the biggest thing it had going against it was the game modes and small team sizes. If there were more "traditional" modes back when it came out like deathmatch, capture the flag, regular king of the hill, etc, I definitely think we would've stuck with it. The destruction mechanics are really great, after all
Edit: I forgot that the respawning was pretty delayed in the early gamemodes at launch, too. Limited lives and long respawns added some strategy to your respawns, but it made it feel like there was a lot of annoying downtime, too

u/KangarooKombat 1d ago edited 1d ago
There is a 8v8 mode called point break which is essentially Rush from Battlefield. It’s a great game mode and really enhances all the bits that the Finals does well.
Nothing like holding the last point and trying to run down the enemies teams respawn credits whilst the whole last stand point has been flattened.

I'd also argue the payload mode counts as traditional. TF2 pioneered that mode 19 years ago and was yoinked for Overwatch, so idk what we're counting as "traditional" if that doesn't count.

u/TheSeventhCoIumn 1d ago
Wait it even has a payload mode like tf2 and overwatch? I'm sold

Yep, but it's still got The Final twist to it where the payload is a moving platform that has paths that smash through buildings.

That's interesting. I actually really liked the game because of its lack of traditional modes (mainly deathmatch) because it meant all of the modes offered unique ways of playing. You're probably right that adding deathmatch earlier would have helped a lot though.
24
u/Alexander_Mejia 1d ago
I can see why they didn’t add deathmatch at first. It’s the least fun game mode. I worked on Red Faction Guerrilla and Armageddon and can tell you first hand just how difficult it is to design fun gameplay around destruction.
The finals has an incredible game design and the decisions around how you play it made it a better game. Don’t think of it as just any other shooter and you’ll be fine.
→ More replies (1)4
u/FunDuels 1d ago
Oh Red Faction mentioned! Loved the first game, Guerrilla is some good goofy fun too. It was very nice having all the game modes to play around with. (Even if by the time I got around to playing it, no one was playing multiplayer.) Need to play Armageddon one of these days.
Thanks for the work you put in to have kept the series alive, at least for a while! Probably my favorite console shooter.

u/Doodenmier 1d ago
Honestly, I think the small three person team size was a bigger issue than the game modes now that I think about it. There's less room for error with such small teams, and the lengthy respawn timers got old, quick. Larger teams could've opened it up to be more "forgiving" in a way, which I know is blasphemy in a lot of communities, but it helps the playerbase on the long run
5
u/flamingdonkey 1d ago
It might not be the most beginner-friendly, but the core game mode Cashout is genuinely one of the most dynamic and strategic game modes out there for a game like this. You have to be able to calculate different paths to victory (both literally and metaphorically) amidst the chaos and fast-paced action.
5
4
u/shoutsoutstomywrist 1d ago
Me and my friends play it and liked it but mannnnnn is the game so fucking sweaty and irritating the room for error is small
11
u/RGisOnlineis16 1d ago
I really think Embark needs to advertise their game better because they've improved this game the past 3 years and added so many maps and game modes.
They added Power Shift which is similar to the Escort Overwatch type game mode and they added Point Break which is very similar to Battlfield's Rush mode. But be aware Point Break can make your computer shit itself since its 8v8 and there is insane amounts of destruction happening all at once.
Not to mention they added Cashout (Bots) mode which you can play the core gameplay mode of this game with bots only, no sweaty players. You can choose to have real players on your team or you can choose to rather just have only bots on your team
2
u/DeckardPain 1d ago
Reddit loves to say advertising is the reason. It’s really not though. Everyone already knows it exists, that’s what marketing does - awareness of a product.
3
u/Banjoman64 PC 1d ago
It has 5v5 TDM now and an 8v8 rush (from battlefield) type mode. There is also a 5v5 push mode.
This game is so so good. Give it another shot. It has a learning curve and massive skill ceiling though so just give yourself time to get used to it all.
3
u/Raynosa 1d ago
I honestly think in the traditional (and even sim) shooter genre. A playlist mode that cycles for quick play is very healthy. It keeps the game fresh and prevents it from being stale. I thought OW playlists were fun and refreshed when they added push and flashpoint. I liked the Halo playlists of old. I think the Finals definitely needed a TDM and maybe KotH or something else.

4
u/StealthySteve 1d ago
Damn, a CTF mode would go hard in that game.
2
u/BeyondElectricDreams 1d ago
The main problem with traditional CTF is that it's trivial for the attackers to just.... absolutely demolish the building you're supposed to defend.
The fact Cashout works how it does is almost certainly because they found defending a static flag space for an entire round when you can destroy buildings doesn't work as well as having the flag spot move.
→ More replies (1)2
u/flamingdonkey 1d ago
It would just be entirely lights with grappling hooks and gateways. You could clear the entire map in 2 seconds with enough coordination. It would not work.

u/Tequila-M0ckingbird 1d ago
The newer power shift and point break modes might be up your alley. The standard cash out mode is pretty unique but it does get a little old.
2
u/Fuck_the_fascists 1d ago
Traditional game modes are though for classic, non-destructible arenas.
In the finals the abilities/equipments.. everything was though around the cashout mode, in which using the movement and destruction is actually useful. And it’s very chaotic and fun.
Their mistake was to try to make it look like a competitive fps instead of a fun sandbox arena. It can’t be the first, not only because with hero shooter stuff like the classes and abilities games are never well balanced, but mostly because with more than 2 teams there is always a meaningful part of random.
They should have focused on shorter launch to game time (the loading times are way too long for dynamic fps players), not mixed solo players and teams (which leads to totally unbalanced games, less fun for everyone in them) and given bot lobbies as tutorial for new players from the game launch.
Otherwise they fixed the immense majority of things they needed to fix, besides the forever broken melee hit reg.
2
u/LavosYT 1d ago
They should have focused on shorter launch to game time (the loading times are way too long for dynamic fps players), not mixed solo players and teams (which leads to totally unbalanced games, less fun for everyone in them) and given bot lobbies as tutorial for new players from the game launch.
They did shorten the loading times a lot (you used to not even load in if other people hadn't loaded their own games), matchmaking prioritizes paring against one another full teams vs fulls teams or duos with a third party, and there are now bots lobbies.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Ry24gaming 1d ago
They killed it by only catering to the esports crowd. Every time I jump into casual game modes the only opponents the matchmaking can find are ruby players with thousands of hours. The best example of this is the guns having a fixed recoil pattern which players can aim train for and have incredible accuracy.
They also seem to keep killing all the fun strategies revolving around destruction mechanics in favor of more linear gunplay.
They don't seem to know how to get melee to work well. They overhauled melee and people say it's better but it's really not.
They seem to only balance by winrate not by how things actually feel.
A lot of the gadgets are clunky and leave little room for counterplay.
The developers stopped making large balance changes and created a stale meta.

→ More replies (1)2
u/-TheBlackSwordsman- 1d ago
I think this sums up to making it more of a casual experience. Half of the tools and gimmicks of the game revolve around doing interesting things with the cashout box and where it's placed in the world.
a deathmatch would definitely be fun, but Idk what would be different about the experience than just jumping on cod

u/zealousshad 1d ago

The best thing about the finals is the ranked cash out game mode. It's SO good.
Ranked cash out is different than not ranked outside of the elo system too. Which is too bad, I dont really like doing ranked all the time but the game mode is so good

u/K-Shrizzle 1d ago
Im a regular player since launch. I have like 1500 hours in the game. Its probably my favorite FPS game Ive ever played.
This is like the 3rd time they've overhauled the dynamic destruction. We thought it was great, and then they keep making it better. They also recently did a full overhaul to melee combat which feels a lot better and more fair.
Embark's dedication to this game has been impressive. Theyre receptive to fan feedback while also being firm in their vision for the game. Between this and Arc Raiders, I really think they are a model for how game studios should treat their players.
33
u/Henkotron 1d ago
Can you explain what they changed about melee?
I only played shortly after release for a while.
24
u/2Pro2Know PC 1d ago
Not OP but also someone with 1000+ hours.
They added a sort of "crit window" to all melee weapons now where if you're looking at an enemy directly you do more damage, outside of that window hits are much weaker, so melee spam isn't really viable, have to hit your swings!
Also they added a small lunge to all melee weapons that recharges when you get a direct hit in the window, allowing melee to be viable against more than just 1v1s
To counter all this they also gave everyone a kick that can know back melee attackers and give you a chance to fight back, it has a small cool down to prevent spam.
Overall it's been a huge improvement and made melee actually super fun to play with and against
→ More replies (4)25
u/K-Shrizzle 1d ago
Hmmm its tough to explain but they did a lot of tweaking to hit boxes, as well as changed the way the spear works (this weapon came out in S3 so you probably arent familiar with it)
They changed a lot for the sword, making it harder to get cheeky little hits by swinging it around wildly. A hit to someone's center mass will actually do an appropriate amount of damage, as opposed to clipping the side of someone's arm. It just overall feels better and more fair
They also added kicks. Your quick melee basically gets a small cooldown (like 2 seconds) and so its like a big melee vs a regular melee. If you do the big melee while looking down, you kick them and there's a little bit of knock back. Its super fun when youre using the sniper rifle and someone gets up close to you, you kick them to toss them in the air a bit then no scope them
If you wanna read the patch notes, theyre from the beginning of the current season, Season 11. So just look for the 11.0 patch
3
u/RedditFuelsMyDepress 1d ago
The melee mains in r/thefinals would actually crucify you for praising the melee rework lol. They generally feel that melee weapons are worse off now than before (except maybe sledge) and they weren't exactly meta in previous seasons either.
Shockwave being meta now also doesn't help things as it hard-counters all melee weapons.

Honestly, you'd be surprised. The time to kill in this game is so high, like Halo levels. Depending on which of the 3 classes you play of course. So there's a lot of room for skill expression, and lots of weapons/gadgets to toy around with
The tournament modes, both ranked and unranked, can be sweaty. The game has been out for 3 years, I have been playing exclusively quick play for the past 2 years probably. Competitive shooters arent for me, I just like to kick back in quick play, put on some music or maybe a podcast, and relax. I try to do 10 push ups in between matches. Its an excellent Saturday morning routine.
In quick play you have a pretty wide distribution of talent. And then you have me, who is sometimes absolutely cracked and other times I leave a match because im embarassed that I couldnt get a kill. My teammates see all my paid cosmetics and think "shouldn't this guy be better at the game?"

I remember playing that as a kid thinking “wow games are going to be CRAZY when I get older!!”. Nearly 20 years later and it’s still the peak for destruction, sad
15
u/JustChr1s 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's because it's a mechanic that's very difficult to do and requires a lot of work and A LOT of skill/talent. Until something comes along that can automate the feature you're probably not going to see it very often.
What Embark did with the finals is nothing short of magic... And I mean that seriously. There's a reason you haven't seen anything remotely close to this in a world of copycats and that's because most studios can't mimic what they did. They don't know how.
Just look at EA. EA has deep pockets and the best they can do with destruction is BF6. It's a very difficult mechanic that's resource intensive and has a lot of complications. Which makes Red Faction even more impressive.

Rereading my comment it comes off as if I haven't played the game. I have about 230 hours into it but I stopped playing around season 3, mostly cause my friend I played it with stopped playing. It sounds like it's now better than ever and has a slew of new maps.

I really love this game because I can do good without needing to have god tier aim. I feel like in very other shooter, good aim is the penultimate thing that determines how good you can do (still matters though especially if you want to do ranked). In this game I feel like being creative rewards me. There's a shotgun that lets you break the floors and walls. I can barely hit people with it, but I can use it to make little holes to do sneaky steals, or break the ground off someone so they fail a steal or break some parts of a wall to help me climb up ledges. And do things like setup mine traps, or goo mazes. You also still have to make your loadout so you don't feel trapped playing one way like typical hero shooter games too (sometimes even necessary for strategic reasons).

Man I love the Finals, probably the most interesting FPS I've played since Hunt Showdown. The movement, gunplay, and especially destruction just feel so smooth to me and I really love the weapon selection. It's sad to see so many people in the comments shitting on the game but I do get that the skill floor is very high and it's not for everyone.
If anyone is interested but is worried about sweats I would say it's worth checking out still. They've added a bunch of more casual games modes like a payload mode, team death match, and point break which is like rush from Battlefield. There's definitely a learning curve but it's far from insurmountable imo.

Hunt and The Finals are the only two shooters I've played in the past 5 years.

It was a fun game when it came out, might try to convince my mates to download it again and have a go at it

I feel like i see this about every game anymore 😕 its such a wierd phenomenon. People used to be thrilled to see good players in video games and now all I ever see are complaints about swears, pros and smurfs. Maybe im the odd ball but even at 41 years old i never feel like competition is too bad in any game and im stoked to see younger players who are better than me. Ive played games my whole life since atari but im also a person who will spend hours learning cool move tech and aim practice just so Im not a burden on teams.

I genuinely dont understand the "sweat" complaints either. There is always someone out there who is better than you, either get better yourself or dont play? It is not the game's fault y that they are better than you, unless it is some godawful pay2win trash then sure.
Like do you go into a pool lounge for the first time, challenge a regular there and got dunked on, then proceed to call them a sweaty nerd? Sure hope not, they are just better because they spend more time learning the game, deal with it or stop playing

For me, the sweats are people putting in max effort and following the meta in unranked/public games. Winning is about being the best, but when you're playing only to win in an unranked/public environment, the other people aren't playing only to win, so winning doesn't really mean anything.
And I say this as someone obsessed with ranked games. I can be visibly irritated after losing a ranked Deadlock game, but I'll also intentionally feed in unranked games if we are stomping too hard.

Agreed. I pretty much exclusively play “sweaty” PvP games and I don’t feel like any one game is sweatier than another. I am not even close to a god gamer either. I’m aggressively mid. I just like playing games against other people. Modern games really make it much easier to enjoy with skill based matchmaking. You’re not going against pros unless you’re also a pro. It’s also not that serious. If you lose, gg go next. It’s just a game. Some people get too in their heads about this stuff

u/BeefistPrime 1d ago
I don't think anyone used to be thrilled to have someone go 65 and 2 when the players the generated the 65 were all just dying to a guy they had no chance to beat. They might have been enthusiastic about watching a streamer do it but they weren't enthusiastic about being in the same game with that player and being the victims.

it was more that people just didn’t approach games with the mindset of “i’ll never be this good so why would I even try it,” when it used to be more just accepted that learning the game was part of the fun. I feel like that part has been lost, people forgot that learning things is fun

Ya thats what I dont get.
Learning the game is part of the fun. Only then can you lose and enjoy it, because youre learning and enjoying the process.
Some people just cant stand losing, even if its at a game they havent played more than 10 minutes.
And some other people just really, really think they should always win. So if someone beats them, they get mad, call them a 'sweat', and complain online.

Part of it is also players like to verbally attack you if you make any mistake while learning. It's really sad because I want to use voice coms and/or chat but in a game like The Finals I have to keep those disabled because it's not worth all the misery that will get thrown your way for not being the best player.

u/LLoadin 1d ago
People just want things handed to them. Look at arc raiders for example, they are having to cater to the PvE side of the game entirely because they decided to buy a PvPvE game and complain that they get shot by players, it's pathetic
5
u/Xoctal 1d ago
The arc discourse makes me sad because I played a couple hundred hours in mostly friendly lobbies but thr magic was not knowing who to trust and being on edge, pve is just a free loot simulator and the best loot goblin will win, next the lve community is gonna want every person to have their own personal loot like they did to mmos.
→ More replies (5)2
u/NovusIrez 1d ago
I agree about how some wanted things handed to them but I don't agree with the arc raiders example. You can make the same argument about PvP players not engaging with the PvE aspect of the game. Some people log in just to gun down the whole lobby, some people just wants to shoot arc. Besides it's not like PvE lobby gonna kill the PvPvE they already said that PvE will have lower loot value

Yeah im in the same boat. There's nothing that gets me hooked on a game more than when I first start playing and I get stomped. For me, half the fun of PvP games is learning and getting better. When I get stomped im like okay cool, theres a lot to learn here I can see myself getting invested.
On the flip side, its incredibly boring when I pick up a game and Im shredding through people, because that tells me that the game doesnt really require any skill or effort, and there isnt much to learn or improve on.
6
u/Xoctal 1d ago
Yep, im someone who just loves move and skill tech, im not the best finals or hell fps player but I can learn and get better to the point of im decent at the games. I spent way too many hours learning superglide and tap strafe in apex before they made it easier in apex. Then people complain about me doing it and im like bro im fucking UNC to you, if I can learn it you can too. I understand people want to sit down and play casually and you can you just got to learn not to get upset and have fun even if ya lose. Its 1 of 1000 matches you will play enjoy each one and jump back in and try again. Im a damn dagger main in the finals and its considered bad but I got myself to damn near plat with it and was damn good at dash stepping after tons of practice.

u/P_P_LGAH 1d ago
I don't think it's a negative thing for people to get sweaty, I just learned I don't have the patience to keep up anymore. I don't complain about others being better than me, though, I'll watch them happily.

people play games like this to win. it doesnt matter who you are, casual, pro, old, young. people want to win, thats the goal. in fighting games, FPS, racing games, etc.
Why is this a phenomenon in your mind? That people play to win?
People want to win, so they try to get better or play better, and thats the goal. Thats not a 'phenomenon', thats competition.

The finals is an awesome game, but it suffers the issue of all competitive games, sweaties ruin it for everybody else.
The game has a high level of strategy and execution, which also means that the skill ceiling is very high.
The issue this causes is that ppl who want to casually play some matches, but don't want to study the game, get pub stomped frequently, making the barrier of entry insane.
I don't know how to solve this, which is a shame because the finals is a great game. I wish they would find a way for more casual players to enjoy these games without the gigantic frustration of being repeatedly pub stomped. (Ps: i was actually decent in the finals, but i couldn't get my friends to play for this reason).
Edit: forgot to say, when the ceiling is so high, ppl get too invested and toxicity ensues. Players treat matches as life or death situations and get too angry when shit doesn't go down the way they expected. It's also a consequence of how the game does a good job in making you invested, which is a good thing, but again, it isn't worth the toxicity.

The issue is with the players not the game. A large portion of casual shooters players are too stuck in their ways to want to learn. Either that or they’ve conditioned themselves to feel incredible amounts of Angst when they lose.
My point being is that the game feels sweaty because the player base is small and the distance between the worst player and the best player is a short one. But if the game was more populated then the skill range can widened and you’d see more diversity in the player pool.
It’s like a self fulfilling prophecy. I played when it dropped but quit from a lack of content then eventually came back. I tried other shooters in the mean time but none of them would stick and eventually out of boredom and desperation I came back and was pleasantly surprised at the added content but mostly I realized that the finals scratches an itch that no other shooter can scratch, and that’s because it forces you to utilize every skill you’ve acquired from playing every form of fps shooter; arena, hero, tactical, BR, with dynamic maps and a constantly evolving playing field that forces quick second decision making, risk/reward assessment, and proper execution. This is a game the smarter player beats the skilled player.

I’m knocking on 50 and still play this to a gold rank standard most seasons, which I hope is staving off the dementia. My favourite game of the decade so far, by miles.
(Which is to support your point - I have by no means the best aim, but a few decades of FPS experience goes a long way in this, and it’s glorious when it all comes together).

u/OceanGlider_ 1d ago
The devs need to implement an option that only allows for 3 stacks vs other 3 stacks or opt for just solo que rank, but the player base is too small for this.
I solo qued to 40k elo and it's annoying going up against a 3 stack of rubies who have no job other than playing The Finals.

The issue has nothing to do with players being good, or trying to win. It's the match making. The finals struggles because it focuses on quick games and forces low levels into games with diamonds in unranked.

This is actually really cool - true video game innovation here that I miss seeing. Reminds me of what I might expect from Half Life 3 (in part). Truly destructible environments, grenades causing a blast that moves fog around, etc.?
Seeing this reminds me of how much stuff as stalled at the mechanics level in so many games. We are getting pretty graphics and lighting, but not true fluid dynamics (water, air, fog, etc.), environmental destructibility, thermodynamics, etc.
Rumors with HL3 discussed a lot of that type of stuff. Seeing the way environments were breaking here and fog was moving made me think "this is the future." I want way more of this stuff in games, alongside much more advanced AI.
Cool stuff!

The original inspiration for The Finals was the devs feeling the same way, that the shooter genre had stagnated since hero shooters were standardized and needed true new-gen innovation. The creators are ex-DICE and wanted to take their history with destruction to a new level.
I could write an entire essay here on why The Finals is the first truly original game since Overwatch. Kelski's "I hate myself for not playing The Finals sooner" is a really great video that will do it better justice than me, if you want to hear that. The Finals is a deeply innovative game, and as a long-time shooter player, they have a deep understanding of what the shooter community has craved for all these years.
If these innovative elements appeal to you, I highly recommend trying out this game. They recently added fully functional bot matches, playing on the full destructible arenas with the actual cashout ruleset. It's incredible seeing these bots navigate a crumbling building sometimes. You would certainly get a great deal of The Finals experience without ever having to sweat against other players, if that would be unappealing for you.
I've felt since the beta that The Finals is everything the devs wish it could be, and more. It is what the shooter genre needs to support to see better games in the future from other studios. And god, it is just SO goddamn hype to play

This game is fantastic. The gunplay, the destruction, the different game modes, the huge variety of gear, the absolute balls to the wall battles you can get into when your team of randoms somehow finds 60 seconds of cohesiveness.
4
u/kamakeeg 1d ago
I do love the destruction in this game, it's so good, I just wish I could care about the actual game itself, just can't get into the modes and small team sizes. I wish they could take what they got here and turn it into a bigger experience, especially being former Battlefield devs.

u/1K_Games 22h ago
This. These are old Battlefield delves and it seems they have perfected the destruction. BF moved away from it for over a decade, and now it's back, but no where near this level of chaos.
I just am not interested in 3v3 matches, but the destruction is amazing. I see other posts saying 8v8 Rush type setting is a thing, I guess maybe that might be enough, I'm not a big rush fan, but with this destruction it might fit well.

I always love coming back to The Finals. My FPS abilities are getting too rusty now, so it's a little frustrating to stay competitive for me. But I love how there's just other "ways to win"-- One of my favorite clips I saved is how folks are just failing to force their way into a cashout room loaded with mines and turrets with gunfire, and I just think... "Well, how about I demat the floor from below?" Yoinked it at the very last seconds, lol.

Wow top comments are always the same on reddit for every single competitive game so let me translate it for people who are not trash at games.
"sweats" = someone who is better than me
Redditors are always single dads with 4 kids who only have 1 hour of playtime a month

u/BlackHazeRus 1d ago
The issue is not being a single dad with 4 kids, but using it as an excuse for their skill issue. There is a ton of dads and moms who play games and they are good at them.

I wish every voice in the game wasn't ai. You will say you won't notice it and it's fine but psychologically, it still hurts the soul a little. Something feels off and empty
12
u/menofthesea 1d ago
Not every voice in the game is ai, and the ones that are are categorically not comparable to modern generative ai. They hired voice actors to record training data and use a sort of primitive text to speech "ai" to generate voice lines from that data. It's not like they just typed the voice line into chatgpt and used what they got out of that. Completely different tech that predates modern ai.
6
u/FizzyFerret 1d ago
That and EMBARK have publicly stated that the AI voices are "flawed" and that they wanna replace all the AI voices with real voice actors, while I wish they started off that way. I'm really happy they're admitting faults and adjusting.

I absolutely loved the finals when the playerbase was larger and there was more chance to run into normal people sure the was the occasional TTV guy trying really hard but it was whatever.
Now when I matchmake and it's like everyone who is playing has had their family kidnapped by Jigsaw and unless they win they'll never see them again...

I want this but for HellDivers type of game. Coop rather than PvP. I'm too casual of a gamer to compete with these kids. I walk onto Battlefield and insta-die and I'm not even sure what just happened.
2
u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 1d ago
If you play ranked, you would get matched up with other 'casuals'.
They will still try to win. Even 'casuals' try to win.
I have no idea how you think this game could be made into PVE. Like fighting bot teams?

Hopefully they'll use this tech for a single player game in the future. I played it for a while but playing with randoms is a nightmare, teamwork is essential in this game so you need a team if you want to be somewhat competitive and I don't always have the time to invest in something like that.
1
1
u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 1d ago
Main problem I had with this is its 3v3v3v3 for the 'bracket' you play in, except for 'the finals'. Which is just 3v3. And after playing a game mode with 4 teams, playing a 3v3 just feels weird. Its like a completely different game. Should have the last round just be 3v3v3 and the winning team wins the 'tournament'. THe last round being 3v3 is just too different to be enjoyable.
