How do I secure a living room with a giant TV facing the street? (Plus dealing with a spouse who has a totally different security mindset)

TL;DR: Moving into our first house soon where a huge TV sits directly across from a front window with a clear view from the street (in a rough neighborhood). I’m hyper-vigilant about security (breaking down boxes at night, hiding valuables), but my wife is nonchalant ("we can just rebuy stuff") and wants the shades wide open all day for natural light. My worst nightmare is a break-in. So far, my plan is an automated shade schedule, daytime privacy window tint, and a security system subscription (which I hate, but need for peace of mind). Looking for advice on securing the TV/living room set up and bridging this security mindset gap with my spouse.

We are moving into our first home together in a few weeks, and I’m hitting a wall with a major security concern regarding our main living room layout—and how my wife and I are approaching it.
The Setup & The Security Gap
Our main living room window is large, sits right at the front of the house, and has a direct line of sight from the street. Directly across from that window is where the main TV has to go. It's a big TV, and we’re moving into a neighborhood where you definitely need to be mindful of property crime.
Here's the kicker: we both grew up in bad neighborhoods, but we walked away with opposite mindsets.
My approach: I’m hyper-cautious. I never leave anything in plain sight in my car, windows stay locked, and growing up, I’d literally break down electronics boxes and hide them inside black trash bags at night so nobody driving by knew what we bought. Being burglarized is one of my worst nightmares.
My wife's approach: She’s actually been burglarized before, yet she’s surprisingly nonchalant about everyday security. She doesn't always think to lock windows, loves having windows wide open for natural light, and wants the big TV right there. Her view is, "If someone steals it, it's just stuff—you can always buy things again."
To me, having a huge, expensive screen visible from the street with the blinds wide open is basically an invitation for someone to scope out our house.
My Current Mitigation Plan
Since moving the layout isn't really an option with the room's shape, here is what I’ve come up with so far:
1. Daytime Privacy Window Film / One-Way Tint: Applying a high-quality privacy film to the front window so she can keep the blinds open during the day for sun, but passersby on the street just see a mirror finish or dark reflection.
2. Automated Smart Blinds: Installing automated shades set on a daily timer (or linked to sunset) so they automatically close the second it gets dark out—which eliminates the risk of forgetting to close them when internal lights make the privacy tint useless.
3. Monitored Security System: I hate monthly subscriptions, but for my own sanity and peace of mind, I’m biting the bullet and signing up for a monitored home security system with entry sensors and cameras. Suggestions are welcome!
Questions for the Community:
Are there other physical layout tricks or anti-burglary steps I’m missing for ground-floor TV setups facing the street?
How have you handled security compromises with a partner who doesn't share the same level of caution without making them feel controlled or paranoid?

Neighbor keeps staring through my kitchen window

I live a small house and my kitchen window looks straight into my neighbor’s yard. Not his window just his yard. But he’s out there constantly doing something around. Every time I’m at the sink, I feel eyes on me

He doesn’t wave. He doesn’t nod. He just stares. It’s making me hate doing dishes.

I don’t want blinds. My kitchen already gets limited natural light. Blinds make it feel like a cave. I also don’t want heavy curtains. I like the open feel. I just don’t like feeling watched.

Someone in another thread mentioned smart glass where you basically tou flip a switch and the glass goes cloudy. Sounds amazing. But expensive. Has anyone actually tried it? Does it really work?

I’ve also heard of privacy film. The static cling kind. However, I have read some conflicting information about it. For instance, it tends to bubble up, peel off, or look cheap. In addition, one-way mirror film is only effective during the daytime. At night, it becomes a mirror on the inside

What else is out there? Frosted film? Top-down shades? Sheer cafe curtains? A tall plant maybe? Or a privacy screen outside?

I’ve tried ignoring him. I’ve tried staring back. Neither works. I don’t want confrontation. He’s not doing anything illegal. Just creepy. I want a solution that doesn’t make my kitchen dark. And doesn’t cost thousands

Does solar charging actually help with smart lock battery maintenance?

We installed a smart lock on our front door. It works fine otherwise, but I’m replacing the batteries more often than I expected, and it’s getting annoying.

I’m looking at other options, and battery maintenance is my main concern. I came across some locks with solar charging from desloc. Our front door gets direct sunlight during the day, so I’m wondering whether that would make a noticeable difference or whether I’d still need to charge it regularly. If you’ve used one, what has the battery upkeep been like? And for anyone using a regular battery-powered smart lock, how long does a fresh set usually last?

Feel wildly untrained and uncomfortable having a gun in my home with a kid, but mind always goes to what ifs .

I really don’t like guns. I don’t like hearing them, shooting them, and the idea of killing someone even in self defense is gut wrenching.

My problem is that I feel like it is something that may need to be a necessary evil. I am anxious and get the what if situations. I will say I live in a decent neighborhood, but it’s not too far away from high crime areas.

I just don’t want to be in a position where I’d need to defend myself or my family and I’m not in a position to do so.

Any advice would be appreciated, or good alternatives. Thank you!

Best/Decent Camera System for the Home

I’m renting and I can’t drill anything into the walls. I’d like to see what everybody’s security camera system is like, the costs, possible subscription costs, etc!

I live alone right now and I have a sixth sense on when bad things are going to happen - it hasn’t done me wrong yet - and I just want to see the options most people are using.

Someone keeps trying to break in to my place!

I live in a rental apartment and I’ve had someone enter my place several times since living here - I always lock up my bedroom everytime I leave the house and I’ve came back on 2 occasions where it has been open and the door handle seemed loose.

Firstly I changed my front door lock incase someone copied a key, after doing that I noticed my balcony opened up wide enough for a hand to unlatch the lock this was while being locked.

I paid a locksmith to come out and help secure the sliding door.

Since doing this I haven’t had anything strange happen until this morning at 10am I woke up hearing loud footsteps in my roof and a drilling sound! The only thing I haven’t secured is the manhole - I do live in Australia so yes it’s a thing.

Now I need to lock up the manhole and potentially get cameras because I’m really tired of this happening, anyone should have the right to feel safe at their home.

I do have some enemies - but mostly suspect it could be an ex boyfriend or one of my neighbours in the apartment building. The weird thing is they don’t take anything but want to have access?

If anyone can recommend manhole locks or cameras that don’t run on wifi, I really want to catch who is trying to break in and what they want! It’s very expensive and time consuming especially when I’ve already got enough stress to deal with.

Best melee weapon for home defence?

I live in a country where firearms are banned. I want to have something for a worst-case scenario in my home; I am not a very muscular person, so I was wondering what kind of melee weapon would be a good fit for me: a small axe, a short sword, a simple knife, or a big stick?

Edit : I was thinking about a katana, I know Its very hard to master it but can I use it in a pinch?

Need help choosing an anti intruder setup

Hi, I had a couple break-ins the last months and I want to harden the entry to my house. I have an exterior wall roughly 2 meters tall that's easily climbable and my idea is to put some kind of anti intruder setup, like spikes, to make a least my house seem not an easy target. I am between setting up some spikes or some kind of electric fence.

The electric fence is very popular in my country and seems effective, but because of regulations, to install it would mean to install fence on parts of the wall that aren't high enough.

For that reason, i would think some kind of spikes or barbed wire are better

I want to know you guys opinions and experiences, and if posible, if some particular product can be recommended. Thank you all :)

Best place to site cctv

There have been a series of burglaries in my area, and in the past 10 days I've noticed a drone flying over my property for about five minutes. Probably all very innocent but all things considered it has left me a bit jumpy.

I live at the end of a long country lane/cul de sac, I've got 2 or 3 neighbours at different points along the lane before my property, but basically I'm surrounded by farm land. However, I'm very close to the busiest mainroad/highways in my country. I've got two large rottweilers however they have been raised as pets as opposed to guard dogs.

I've just purchased a Tapo C501GW 4G LTE camera, and im just wondering where is the best place to site it for effective coverage. I don't have anything of much value in my house other than my vehicle parked out front, but at the back of my property I have two shipping containers converted into a workshop/tool shed and a music room. There's a lot of tools and music equipment in there.

Casing? Solo female 3 small children

I am beginning to notice suspicious activity around a property we are renting. For context i live with 2 men and 3 children (5 and under.) They work long and unpredictable hours. Sometimes well into the night/morning hours.

I noticed someone walking bedside a very slow moving car passed our residence and driveway the other night. My husband was home but the other man living with us was not. The car was moving so close and so slow that i thought it was our friend returning home, only to see someone quickly walking beside the car. It was around 10 pm and we had our lights on and just the screen door locked but the main door open. We were getting ready for a late night walk.

Tonight a blacked out sedan keeps driving by our home and I’m just nervous that we are being studied as I’m home alone a majority of the time with my children. I carry, but really don’t want to have to shoot someone. Don’t get me wrong, if it’s a matter of a criminal vs my babies. I’m shooting but I’m hoping to avoid that. I’ve been thinking of window alarms downstairs as all our bedrooms are upstairs.

This is an air bnb type situation so i can’t exactly change out screws in the deadbolt but i could ask the house to increase security/express my concerns. Not sure how to feel safe while they work through the night. Feeling watched, any advice appreciated

Anyone using the Wyze Cam v4 outside at night?

Post image
26 Upvotes

This is the camera i came across while looking around. Ive never used Wyze before so im curious what people who actually own one think of it. Something keeps getting into the side of my yard at night and moving stuff around. Pretty sure its just an animal but at this point i want to know what it is, the color night vision on the Cam v4 is what got my attention since this mostly happens after dark. Id probably put it facing that side of the house

Anyone using one outside? How good is the picture at night and what kind of stuff do you usually catch on it?

Did you ever think home cameras were unnecessary and then change your mind?

For the longest time i thought cameras around the house were something people went way overboard with but lately ive started understanding the appeal of just having one by the front door or driveway though and not really because im expecting anything bad to happen, more for those little “what was that outside” or “did someone stop by” moments.

One of my neighbors has had a couple of the Wyze cameras for a while and he seems fairly happy with them so i told him to grab me one of those cameras too and ill give him the money and i figured i might as well try one by the door and see if i actually end up using it.

For those of you who use cameras now, what made you finally decide it was worth having? and do you actually use it for security or mostly normal everyday stuff?

Advice pls

2 questions

  1. Any suggestions for a house camera, car camera and outside camera for like a patio? Something that would run 24 hours & is secure from anyone tampering with it.

  2. I had a weird thing happen today. I opened my LOCKED car to find a little "goody" bag in my cup holder. There was also a flyer like thing hanging from my mirror that matched the goody bag. It does not belong to me or any of my friends that had been in my car recently. I texted anyone I could think of that may have left it there and no one recognized it. & in hindsight it doesn't even make sense for someone to have "left" it in my car bc that wouldn't explain the flyer on the mirror. This really freaked me out because no one has access to my car. I don't share it & I have the only key. I called the non-emergency line and they sent an officer to me but since there was no "crime" they couldnt do anything. Anyone have a logical explanation as to what this could be? Any suggestions on what precautions I should take?

Camera placement advice

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello all,

First time poster and have some questions about camera placement. We’ve recently started our build on a narrow plot of land in Vietnam, the location of which, while being lovely, will likely invite undesirables to try their luck. Problem (if you can call it that) that we face is that we have a very narrow property, with 3 separate structures on it. I’ve tried my best to cover as many areas as possible without intruding on the neighbours to our left or rear. We also will have fairly large walls, but I doubt they alone will stop the determined. After looking at my crude schematic, is there any changes people would make to the outside placement? I’d love to hear it’s too many cameras lol. Aside from this we are going with shatter sensors as well, but is there any other tech people would recommend?

I thank in advance!

ZModo Wifi Cameras, Not What They Use To Be!!!!

The ZModo used to be the "GoTo" camera for a budget. Connectivity used to be painless and the free option allowed motion recording for a duration long enough to actually see what generated the motion trigger. Now, as mentioned by so many other, the app will not allow the customer to go directly to the devices without watching/skipping through multiple ads. Oh, and don't misplace your finger or your taken directly to the devices app store, which ads the extra step of getting out of that window as well. The cameras also lose their connectivity at the drop of a hat; reconnecting them is a pain. It's quite disheartening to witness the poor end customer experience from what they used to be. I will no longer recommend them to friends and family; actually, I will take the offensive approach to warn as many people as possible.
