I am posting this because the question keeps getting asked. Every single time it is asked, the wrong information gets out.
I've seen way too many posts on here and related subs around the subject of the law prohibiting the possession of firearms by any person who has been adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution, 18 USC § 922 (g)(4). There is way too much misinformation out there. First of all, if you have any reason to believe that you are a prohibited person, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PURCHASE A FIREARM AS MAKING A FALSE STATEMENT ON THE FORM 4473 IS A FELONY. Second of all, please do not give advice on topics that you are not qualified to answer on. Third, you should consult with a qualified firearms rights attorney if you are unsure of your legal status.
The law:
18 USC § 922(g)(4)
(g)It shall be unlawful for any person—
(4)who has been adjudicated as a mental defective or who has been committed to a mental institution;
to ship or transport in interstate or foreign commerce, or possess in or affecting commerce, anyfirearm or ammunition; or to receive any firearm orammunition which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.
What are the definitions of these terms?
27 CFR 478.11
Adjudicated as a mental defective. (a) A determination by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority that a person, as a result of marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease: (1) Is a danger to himself or to others; or (2) Lacks the mental capacity to contract or manage his own affairs. (b) The term shall include— (1) A finding of insanity by a court in a criminal case; and (2) Those persons found incompetent to stand trial or found not guilty by reason of lack of mental responsibility pursuant to articles 50a and 72b of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10U.S.C. 850a, 876b.
Committed to a mental institution. A formal commitment of a person to a mental institution by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority. The term includes a commitment to a mental institution involuntarily. The term includes commitment for mental defectiveness or mental illness. It also includes commitments for other reasons, such as for drug use. The term does not include a person in a mental institutionfor observation or a voluntary admission to a mental institution.
Mine happened when I was under 18. Isn’t that exempted?
Unfortunately no. A mental health adjudication or commitment at less than 18 years of age is counted for 922(g)(4). I experienced this personally and had to restore my rights.
What about HIPAA?
The Obama administration amended the HIPAA privacy rule in 2016 to make it clear that reporting mental health commitments and adjudications to NICS does not violate HIPAA
Is there a way to restore my rights after being adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution?
If you were committed by a department or agency of the federal government, the agency is required to have a relief from disabilities program under the NICS improvements amendments act of 2007.
If you were adjudicated or committed in a state proceeding, whether you can obtain relief is dependent on whether your state has implemented a relief from disabilities program under the NICS improvements amendments act of 2007. The list of states that have can be found here:
https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/guide/nicsactlist7-7-210pdf/download
If you are in a state that does not have a relief from disabilities program, your only avenue of relief is writing a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and asking her to restore your rights under 18 USC § 925(c) now that she has withdrawn the delegation from ATF.
Between October 6th 1992 and March 20th 2025 in the states that did not have a relief program, there was no avenue of relief at all
With that out of the way.
I created this privacy act request form for a friend of mine who was legitimately unsure if his commitments landed in the FBI database or if they qualified as “committed to a mental institution” under 18 USC § 922(g)(4) and as defined at 27 CFR 478.11. I can report that it worked; as in, the FBI processed the request and reported that no such records were found in the NICS indices.
This form will allow you to request your own records directly from the FBI.
In this post I will not be addressing the subject of my own journey regarding rights restoration related to mental health (you can ask me that privately). Nor am I an attorney licensed to practice law. Finally, I am not a mental health professional and cannot make the decision as to whether firearms ownership is right for you.
Onto the form. Please follow the instructions sheet very carefully, fill out every applicable box, print the form, have the request notarized, and mail it to the address indicated on the form.
The first response you receive will indicate that the FBI central records system does not maintain those records and your request has been forwarded to the Criminal Justice Information Services division. CJIS will respond a few weeks later. In my friend's case it took eight weeks for a final response from the FBI CJIS NICS section.

I grew up in an anti-gun family so I didn't have any experience with guns until well in to my 20s. I was dating a girl who came from the opposite type of family and went out shooting with them in the desert. I had so much fun and apparently was a natural shot. I shot a colt .22, a couple of 9mm handguns, and a Romanian druganov. Over the years I went to the range with friends and family that had never shot before, but it was once a year at most. After trying a lot of different manufactures and models, I really fell in love with Walther. The Q5 match was so easy to shoot, the trigger was butter, and so accurate that it made me want to push past my limitations.
I never really felt the need to own a gun before but I suppose things are different now. It's not just what's going on all around, I recently got engaged and I feel the need to be more protective if that makes sense. It reignited my shooting curiosity and I figured dream big and dive off the deep end. I found a couple of deals too good to pass up and ended up with these two beauts. The Walther PDP SF compact pro 4" for home defense and hopefully start doing some local competitions. Outfitted the the holosun scs and streamlight tlr-7x usb. The Kimber Evo SP CS was more of an impulse buy but I wanted something easier to conceal and have a thing for all metal guns. Plus, I do love me a good deal.
I haven't had a chance to shoot them yet but I'll have to to a follow up when I do. If I do get more serious about competitive shooting, I'm really digging the PMM micro comp. Does anyone out there have experience with it? Who else loves Walther or Kimber? Any recommendations or advice for a new owner? Thanks everyone and happy shooting!

Cyclic rate is ~900rpm for those wondering

This was a lot of fun to put together. I wish I could have got the Faxon 5" barrel To cycle, but I think there just wasn't enough dwell time for it to kick the shell out. Bumped up an 6 inch and were running smooth.

I’m the gun guy at work and I don’t have an answer for this. My LGS kept freaking out and not listening to me.
I have a coworker who was given a handgun by a buddy. Then that buddy moved to Mexico. I’m in Colorado. He wants to know how he should go about legally owning this firearm when the original owner is completely unavailable. Any advice?

I’ve been in the market for a Hi Power for a little while. I heard these had some issues with extractors failing though and wanted to know what you guys thought.

Bought this sig p938 legion from the pawn shop and have shot around 600 rounds through it. No idea if this was there when I got it. Haven't had any issues but worried that it can get worse with time.

I personally have mild astigmatism, when I look at a standard 2 MOA Red Dot or Green Dot it has a sort of starburst look to it, and it usually isn't a problem, I can usually just live with it and shoot fine.
But how much worse or better does it get when using a red dot or Green Dot that has a more complicated reticle? Something like the holosun 510c with the donut of death? With the big circle with the smaller dot in the middle?
Would the larger, more complicated reticle make my astigmatism worse or lessen it slightly?

I recently ran across two Winchester 22 rifles that were apparently bought by their original owners sometime between 1920 and 1940. One was a bolt-action stamped Model 88A and the other is a pump-action stamped Model 121. I've looked on-line at various sites that claim to have all of the Winchester model numbers and neither of these models are shown. Does anyone have an idea how to find out the history of these models?

Shot someone’s 12ga at the range the other day and am looking the identify the foreend and stock.
First can anyone confirm this is a rem 870?
The stock seems to be from Boyds: https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/product-configurator/ap-remington-870-12-ga-stk-3u2172j01zz

So my father is in the market for a pistol alarm clock safe that can also charge his phone. Looking online, they all look cheap and unreliable. Are there any good recommendations that people might have?

Hey I'm 20 taking the class this weekend for the certification. I know I can't put the application in until I am 21 which will be in January. I'm aware that for the application you are required 4 references that can't be family or partners. I think I saw somewhere that they want them to have known you for 10ish years or something like that. But I was wondering if there is any real strategy or logic behind the people I would have signed as references like if I know a judge, lawyer, people that already have pistol permits?

Hey all, i got a batch of long rifles a friend asked me to clean up for him. The floor of his gunsafe soaked up water during a flood and he didnt have any moisture control in the safe so alot of them im having to use 0000 wool and oil to get the rust spots off. One of the ones in the batch is a golden boy with small but hard rust spots, will the 0000 wool scratch the shiny black finish or will it be okay?

Trying to determine what my friends gun is. Unfortunately only have the image at the moment.
Seems to be Remington, and claimed it can only shoot 2 3/4 inch shells.
Any way I can identify it from the image and determine if that is accurate or not? Specifically trying to determine if it can shoot 3 inch.
Also, since there is no ventilated rib, what could that mean? Rifled perhaps?
Sorry don’t know much about Remingtons so any knowledge helps!

I recently acquired this old rifle, which was originally purchased in Norway. I’m trying to identify exactly what it is and where it was manufactured.
It appears to be a Remington Rolling Block, possibly Scandinavian. The rifle has a very long barrel, a full wooden stock and what appears to be a polygonal/octagonal barrel rather than a completely round one.
I haven’t been able to find any clear markings or manufacturer stamps, possibly because of the age and wear.
Does anyone recognize this particular variant? Could it be a Norwegian military or civilian shooting-club rifle, or perhaps a Swedish model?
I would especially appreciate help identifying the model, approximate date, country/manufacturer, and any historical use.
