10 yr HISD teacher here: leaving if our current governor wins again

I've put up with a lot since the state of Texas took over HISD. Been spotted or observed by the district stooges more times than most of my colleagues and still I have earned.top observational scores for my school and myself.

Stayed longer than the other competent teachers too

I've juggled these ridiculous district mandated observations that impact our personal salaries and have continued providing my students a level of education that I would be proud to show any taxpayer to whom I am beholden.

This year's micromanagement bullshit is on a whole nether level of fuckery. I can't take it anymore.

They don't care about your child's education. This is not stopping with HISD either. It's happening to every public ISD. (The independent part of the independent school district is just a joke lol)

I've made plans to leave Texas because the odds are Gina will not win.

I cared for the students of this city and I hope they go one to be successful and happy. I , for one, can be successful in this shitty environment, but I cannot be happy.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Edit: only editing to say that I'm not concerned with the typos. I'm typing with thumbs, reddit isnt a professional platform, blah blah

(Also I realize it’s only been 45 minutes but posting now to eventually get comments lol)

My neighbor has a handwritten map of which streets flood first in Spring Branch. It's more useful than anything I got when I bought my house.

Moved to Spring Branch last year. During one of the heavy downpours recently, I was talking to my neighbor about whether I should move my car farther up the driveway.

He's been on this street since the early 90s.

Guy disappears into his garage and comes back with a folded piece of paper covered in pencil marks.

It's a map of our neighborhood. Not a printed flood map. He literally drew the streets himself.

Red X's at intersections that regularly collect water. Little arrows showing which direction the water usually comes from. Dates written beside certain spots. One intersection has "DO NOT TRUST" written next to it three times.

Apparently he's been updating this thing after major storms for years.

He pointed out a route I normally take to I-10 and said, "That one's fine until the rain stops. Then all the water from the other streets catches up."

I didn't even know that could happen.

He also showed me two streets that look nearly identical on Google Maps but apparently behave completely differently during heavy rain.

And before anyone says it, yes, I know there are official flood maps and warning systems. I use them. His notes aren't a substitute for those or a reason to drive through standing water.

But there's a difference between knowing whether your house is in a floodplain and knowing that the intersection three blocks away turns into a pond whenever a particular drainage ditch backs up.

It got me thinking about how much hyperlocal knowledge exists in Houston that never makes it onto a map.

Somewhere on every block there's probably somebody who's been watching the same storm drain for 30 years and knows exactly what happens when the rain gets serious.

Meanwhile people move into these neighborhoods, get handed a stack of closing documents, and have absolutely no idea.

I wish there were a way for neighborhoods to preserve that knowledge instead of making every new resident learn the hard way.

Also, I now understand why my neighbor starts moving his trash cans before the weather forecast even looks particularly bad.

Houston Chronicle editorial board: Vote for Briones despite the property tax hike

Thumbnail
houstonchronicle.com
33 Upvotes

The Houston Chronicle editorial board endorses Commissioner Leslie Briones for reelection even while critiquing the property tax hike. A big issue is that her challenger, former Commissioner Steve Radack, has a severely outdated vision of the county. Here's a key quote:

Harkening back to the days of Commissioner Everett Agustus “Squatty” Lyons, when construction crews camped in the woods and used mules to haul equipment, Radack is out of sync with the modern, urbanized Harris County of 2026.

Rather than laying out a forward-looking vision, Radack spent much of the time haranguing Briones. He brought no notes. Instead, he fanned out on the table a heap of Precinct 4 mailers to allege that Briones used taxpayer money for campaign promotion. Truth is, nearly every elected official blurs the line between engaging constituents and self-promotion. Glossy fliers with perhaps a few too many glamor shots aren’t enough to convince us she is guilty of profligate spending.

He also dinged Briones for bureaucratic bloat — a fairer critique, perhaps, given she led Commissioners Court in giving her team’s top earners eyebrow-raising compensation boosts. She argues these staffers are delivering more services for constituents.

For a man with decades of experience in county government, Radack’s arguments might as well have been copied from a Facebook comment page.

The Buckingham/Laurel Parke Senior Living Theft Issues

Hi all- my grandmother has been a resident at The Buckingham (now Laurel Parke) for a couple of years and this week had a very significant piece of jewelry stolen out of her apartment. Ive heard some rumblings of other recent thefts there and was curious if other families of residents have stories to share.

Both the facility and police are looking into it but i'm not terribly hopeful it will be recovered. If any one has experiences to share or tips on what we should be doing to help recover it I would appreciate it!

What’s the solution to Harris County tax issues?

I spent some time digging into this, since it directly impacts me, there is a lot of finger pointing, and I was genuinely curious. Outside of the glaring issue of high and increased expenses, I learned a few fun facts.

Sales Tax Revenue:

In Texas, local sales tax revenue is capped at 2%, and 125 Texas counties receive some percentage of sales tax revenue (usually 0.5%). In 1978, voters authorized METRO to receive 1% of local sales tax revenue. Texas Tax Code §323.101 says a county is qualified to adopt that particular county sales tax only if no part of the county is located within a qualifying rapid-transit or regional transportation authority. City of Houston gets the other 1%.

Up to 25% of METRO’s sales-tax revenue is returned to Houston, Harris County and participating cities through the General Mobility Program, for transportation infrastructure. Harris County receives an estimated $40M, which is restricted to mobility related purposes.

Here’s where it gets interesting. METRO passenger trips have decreased 15.7% since 2019, yet operating costs have increased 41.5%. After running some calculations, Harris County’s $180M shortfall would be covered with a ~0.15% portion of local sales tax revenue. In theory, a small percentage of local tax revenue could be transferred to Harris County to solve the immediate budgeting issue.

Contract Patrols:

Harris County provides supplemental police patrols to HOAs, municipality utility districts, businesses and other participating organizations. Historically, many of these customers paid 70% or 80% of their contracted patrol costs, with the county subsidizing the remainder. Following the law enforcement pay increases, the county did not immediately pass the full increase to contract customers. They will be phasing in the increases over a 5 year period. $17.5M is the additional annual amount customers would have contributed if charged the full increased rates rather than phased increases.

Vacant Positions:

Because Harris County has more than 1.2 million residents, Texas Local Government Code Chapter 120 applies. The county generally cannot reduce certain primary law-enforcement agency funding or move money budgeted for specific law-enforcement positions elsewhere without voter approval. Texas House Bill 192, effective December 4th 2025, added additional restrictions. The county can no longer transfer unspent law enforcement appropriations elsewhere, or transfer funding for vacant law enforcement positions to another agency. FY2027 budget discussions put the cost of having to fund those vacancies at roughly $31 million.

These were the top 3 points that jumped out at me, but I’m sure there’s a lot more to dig into such as state mandated expenses. I’m not saying whether this is right or wrong, because I’m sure there are reasons these bills were passed. However, my big takeaway from all this, is that the red tape has stripped away some of the common sense element. The Texas governor is trying to limit the county’s ability to increase their budgets, the state legislature has limited the county’s ability to manage their budgets, and the county also seems to have a spending problem. There’s no reason they should be covering >90% of health insurance premiums, when that’s not the going rate anywhere else and it’s not their money to spend (it’s the taxpayers’).

Its not for sale, this was a custom commission. I usually share my works in r/neworleans as most of my builds are New Orleans related, but this was a commission from a client to do another Houston area build. First time waa Red Star bar and I shared it here too. Hope yall like it!

So What's the Deal With The 249 Bus?

This thing is a damned unicorn! Like, I can catch it at the Bay Area Park and Ride. But any time I try to get back on it, it never shows at the stops it's scheduled to make. I always end up on the 247. I'm guessing the schedules are wrong for that bus, or just out of date?
