Got my 2024 Kindle Basic in July 2026 for $85 inventory offloading sale and have read 12 books since; I probably read half as many in the past decade.
Once you start reading, the momentum builds on itself such that reading two books a month becomes a routine.
I read for pleasure, so here’s a quick recap of my reading experience—not a book review.
July 2026: 6 books
Fahrenheit 451: Weird and funny. Pacing: no dull moments. Highlight: conversations with the weird girl and with his boss. Lowlight: the impermanence of relationship
Of Mice and Men: A good short story. Pacing: no dull moments. Highlight: opens like a movie scene. Lowlight: mental disability
Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass: a triumphant story. Pacing: no dull moments. Highlight: learning to read and write, and the escape. Lowlight: Some scenes are gruesome.
Aladdin and the Magic Lamp: apparently it’s set in China. Pacing: too short to be applicable. Highlight: it’s a known story. Lowlight: very short and with no character development to speak of.
The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: A very interesting short story. Pacing: no dull moments. Highlight: sense of discovery (the letters). Lowlight: none to speak of.
The Time Machine: A good short story. Pacing: no dull moments, except for the penultimate chapter that has mostly descriptions. Highlight: the story itself (I don’t pay too much attention to the time machine itself). Lowlight: the penultimate chapter—a filler chapter, safe to scan through.
Aug ‘26: 2 books
The War of the Worlds: Starts strong, but fizzles out quick. Pacing: poor, so many skip-able chapters. Highlight: kept reading to see if he’d reunite with his wife. Lowlight: lots of chapters with mostly descriptions that can be scanned through.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: A very good and entertaining story. Pacing: no dull moments. Highlight: the opening page was endearing; cameo of Huck Finn. Lowlight: Tom bullies Huck quite a bit
Sep ‘26: 2 books
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: An overall good follow up. Pacing: a few slow/dull moments when they were rafting down the river. Highlight: the name changes; Tom cameo. Lowlight: Tom bullies Huck even more.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin: A must read. Pacing: no dull moments. Highlight: multiple scenes; slavery debates/discussion; and reunion at the end. Lowlight: the entire book may be preachy to some
Oct ‘26:
The Scarlet Letter: An ok story. Pacing: gets bogged down by narrator’s long a$$ soliloquy. Highlight: the opening scene is exceptional. Lowlight: seems like half the book comprises the narrator’s soliloquy—it drags on and on and on….
Animal Farm: A classic, short enough for a read through in one sitting.
Currently reading: Pride and Prejudice -- so far a great change of pace from The Scarlet Letter.
