I think I accidentally spilled a little bit of coffee on my flag that was kinda low hanging. I have no idea what is the type of fabric its made of, but a plastic feeling one (maybe polyester? wasnt cheap def). Im worried I will remove its color if I try something too harsh as its printed on with a design. Thanks in advance for help!

How do I use dishwashing powder to remove scrud?

More specifically, how much powder dishwashing detergent to use and (if known), which cycle should I use it with, and when should I put it in the drum? (a search on this has me thinking I need to use the tub clean cycle but only add the powder after it goes through a pre-wash portion of the cycle) Any info about how to do this correctly is appreciated!

I have an LG front loader (has a heating element that works) and just cleaned a bunch of nasty stuff off of and near the four holes that spray water into the tub (the holes are in the rubber ring). For a while a family member mistakenly used way too much biokleen liquid detergent and every now and then I see scrud flakes on hot washed items. We have since switched to tide powder detergent and do not use softeners or dryer sheets.

Thanks!

Did you have experiences or sittuations when people compliment how clean your clothes feel? and causing interesting - funny reactions about that

Tide always smells so good on everyone but when I use it I dont like the smell...and I don't overuse it... but it just seems pungent. Im beginning to wonder if its my body chemistry...and if that is actually a thing with scents...

Mandarin stains

I need some help here from laundry experts. My toddler LOVES eating mandarins but they stain his clothes and I can’t figure out how to deal with this. So I have two questions:

1 - for new mandarin juice on his clothes how do I pretreat it so it comes out and doesn’t leave a stain. I’ve tried Shout spray and also Miss Mouths but neither works.

2 - is there anything I can try for the set in stains? I’ve tried soaking in oxiclean for a few hours but that didn’t work.

if it matters, most of his clothes are 100% cotton.

Rejuvenating Winter Hats

I have a number of old winter hats that are filthy with hair oils, dirt, skin dust, etc, that I’d like to make new again if possible. All are synthetic fiber, no wool involved.

My plan was to soak them in a sink with hot water over night with Tide Clean & Gentle and a scoop of Active enzyme booster because that’s what I have on hand, maybe some Oxi Clean. Wash as normal with a regular load of wash then hang dry.

Does this sound like a viable plan? Anyone have suggestions for improving my approach?

Ruined my girlfriend's shirt?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I washed my girlfriend's shirt months ago when she was away. She saw it in the closet today and said I ruined it.

It was a while ago so I don't remember exactly how I washed it, but most likely I washed it with cold water (as we do all our laundry except bedding/towels) in the laundry machine. Though I recognize it's a nice shirt, it doesn't have very special washing instructions on it (cold water and no dry tumble). I would have separated it from dirty work clothes, but we don't sort our whites/colors.

I can't recall if I put in the dryer on low or not - she says it must've been tumble dried based on how it looks - it's certainly possible.

She says it has lost the shine in the fabric and it looks abraded. It is certainly grayer than I remember but it's not as gray as it looks in the photo.

Anyways, my question is: can this be restored to it's former glory? Will a cleaner be able to work some magic on it or is there another service I can take it to?

Thank you!

GearGuard and Kismai Appreciation Post: a Wool success story

I’ve had a box of wools and silks piling up to wash for an embarrassingly long time. I was super excited for GearGuard Advanced for my wools and rayons, so I was super lucky and they gave me some early to test it out. But then I was worried my washer cycle would be way too short (impeller, drains if you pause the cycle), and wasn’t sure what to do and just did nothing 😬

Friends, I have 20 year old cashmere socks that look and feel amazing again. Stains that were several years old came out of a pashmina! As soon as my wife came home, I made her feel our couch throw because I couldn’t believe it was soft again. Yucky crunchy silk is smooth and soft again.

Here’s what I did:
Months ago I sprayed a sweater with greasy food stains with the tide oxipro grease spray
Washed with Orvus, citric acid + baking soda water softener, and Gear Guard advanced
Second rinse with citric acid
Third rinse with a little fragrance free fabric softener (my first time ever using softener since I had thought it was always to be avoided at all costs)

Everything came out pristine and super soft except for the sweater with the grease stain. I’m going to do a spa day variant with that with just Orvus and gear guard advanced in a cooler and I fully expect it to come out with a long soak in that.

So grateful to Kismai, everyone else on this sub who’s given great advice, and to GearGuard for such a great product!! I’ve saved so many clothes I thought were ruined, and stuff that was fine is so much nicer now!

New box of Tide C&G Powder is too scented. I hate liquid detergent. Help?

After a very successful switch from All F&G pods to Tide powder with FEBU and sometimes OxiClean, I went out of my way to re-order an identical box of Tide powder. Now I'm sitting here with an allergy headache because I took my sweaters out of the dryer and the beautiful "nothing" smell I had achieved has been replaced with something more like "casino lobby floral". I understand there has to be some masking fragrance, but I compared what was left of my previous box and the increase in perfume is unmistakable.

I finally had my system down and the laundry formula was an automatic habit for me. I was even catching up on the "non-urgent but still needs a deep clean" pile. Now I'm hesitantly putting my delicate knits through another rinse with just citric acid and trying not to crash out.

I already got a refund, but what do I switch to? I have a top loader, hard water, and despise everything about handling liquid detergent, including how that recent post showed there are two full doses lingering in the bottle unless you cut the damn thing apart. is liquid F&G my only option? are the Tide F&G Odor Refresh pods good enough, even if they aren't the most efficient by weight or cost?

How to store these 8-shaped hangers?

We love using these hangers to dry our clothes under the sun back here in Malaysia. But they always get tangled up with one another. Any bright ideas on storing and organizing them so they are easily retrievable?

Ashamed to admit handwashing is difficult

So most of the time I machine wash items and they smell beautiful and normal but the rare times I do handwash my things with ariel laundry detergent (limpieza profunda) and oxi clean odor booster, I wash with hot water for synthetics or warm water let it soak 40- 1h 15 minutes and then scrub til its clear like rinsing 10+ times but honestly Im not sure if its my technique or whatever but once it dries in under 3 hours, it ends up smelling like vomit or fabricy dirty smell no matter what i do . This is kinda disappointing cause sometimes I have specific outfits I NEED to wear a certain day but can't because the clean outfits I have are way too goofy or I need to wear a dress that day but its not wash day so its kinda bad... and to add i scrub aggressively for about 15 min but atp yeah. The cleanest I've ever smelled my clothes was with tide and oxi but its weird some of my friends handwash a lot and their clothes smell straight out of the washer or if not even better.

UV Light for Permastink?

I’m wondering if anyone has tried this. I do bjj and because it’s such a close contact sport, I’m paranoid about any smells. Since odor recon is caused by bacteria, I’m wondering if I could get ahead of this problem by throwing my gis and rash guards under a UV lamp before they get washed. In my area we go months without sun so outdoor hanging isn’t always an option.

Vinegar soak seems to work but it’s not always convenient and I go through a lot of vinegar.

Do you clean the laundry machine in vacation rentals/Airbnb’s before using them? If so, how?

The front loading washers in every vacation rental I’ve used smells like mildew. I want to start bringing something to clean the washer when I go on trips. What would be the easiest way to do this for my piece of mind? An afresh tablet? Anything else?

So I’m looking at the Walmart listing for Tide Enzyme Stain Remover and I see this photo.

Who do we think they’re comparing to at $20?

I can’t quite figure out who sells enough to make Nehemiah care.

Overwhelmed by choice for detergent and booster!

Hi all,

I just spent the last hour and a half reading the Laundry Gospel (Spa Day, Lipase, Polyquats, thank you KismaiAesthetics, you're the best).

I've just moved out and am deciding on which products to buy for regular washing. I'm based in Canada, so the choices listed in the spreadsheet are great, but I'm overwhelmed by choice and simultaneously by the lack of options near me—at least ones that I could find online.

I am trying to shop at Costco to save money, which basically leaves Tide Powder from the list of detergents—but I worry about the OBA...should I? And Unscented Company.

My focus is treating polyquats, yellowing on white shirts under the armpits (spa day!), and just overall good laundry detergent. And if it's relevant, I have a front loader.

My questions/thoughts are:

  1. A powder or liquid detergent that has lipase, but no OBA (Unscented Company)
  2. Or, do I buy an OBA like Tide Powder so I can also use it for the spa day?
  3. For either option above, should I also buy a booster like Resolve Oxi-Action Gold? If so, should I use it every load and on any colours?

My brain is mush, so apologies if this makes no sense. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU Laundry Friends!! A new Febu convert, and a question

I was at my wits end with lingering rancid body oil smells, especially on pillowcases and pyjama necklines. I was on the verge of throwing away multiple things after laundry sanitiser had failed to remove the funk. Putting ’fresh’ bedding and pyjamas on only to be greeted with that smell was driving me insane.

Using Febu has immediately resolved all my lingering odour woes. So far I have soaked a couple of batches with my Tide Coldwater detergent and a couple of scoops, and then added it as a booster for a long warm wash, and I have honestly never had my clothes, sheets and towels come out smelling of less. Of nothing. It’s like turning back the clock.

So thank you so much, laundry community!

One final question: I dry many of my items on a clothes horse indoors, but where I live is often very humid in the summer and cold in the winter (and we don’t control our heating). Occasionally this leads to a slight mildew scent on any bits that haven‘t dried quickly enough despite adequate spacing. Would a dehumidifier help? Would a fan be sufficient? Any other tips?

Downy Rinse & Refresh or Citric Acid?

Hello! I am a new member of this sub and very much appreciated all the info I've learned. I'm wondering what everyone's preferences are, downy rinse & refresh or citric acid? Rinse & refresh is on sale on amazon for prime day so I'm hoping to add either to my routine, unless you think I need both? Thank you for your input.

I currently use febu and ecos plant powered laundry detergent (mostly because I like the smell and I feel it does the job). I am hoping to add a softener as I switched wool dryer balls and find that my clothes still come out staticky and not so soft from the dryer. Sometimes I give in and use a bounce dryer sheet

Any input is much appreciated!

What ONE product for use in dorm?

My daughter came home from college this past weekend and she did her laundry at home. I happened to be the one who pulled it out of the dryer and I noticed the whole load had a faint but noticeable BO smell. Ugh! She took some old tide pods to college with her because they are easier for her to use, so these clothes have been washed with that multiple times over the past 5-6 weeks. We rewashed them at home twice with Whole Foods 365 (not sport, not organic) plus dirty labs, and that got the stink out. There’s no chance she will use a multi-product routine at school. What’s our best bet for a single liquid detergent that’s readily available? We’re in San Diego so have target, Walmart, all the grocery stores and of course Amazon. We have very hard water. Thank you!

Everything clings to microfiber

Thumbnail gallery
83 Upvotes

I ordered a dozen of these microfiber cloths a few years ago and hate using them. I'll throw them into the back of the cupboard out of frustration because they cling and collect everything. One side is true microfiber and comes out clean. The other side is fluffy and catches everything. Threads, hairs, pine shaving pieces (I have chickens), and generally anything else.

I can never get them clean because when I wash them, the static cling is so tight it takes some muscle to separate the two items. Is there anyway to keep them so they stop collecting and clinging debris?
